Rodri postponed talks about his future at Manchester City: the focus is on Spain and the World Cup

Rodri Hernández has stated that he does not want to open the question of his club future while Spain's preparations for the 2026 World Cup are underway, even though his name is being linked more and more often with Real Madrid. The Manchester City midfielder, according to the English club's official data, has a contract until June 2027, which means he is entering the final year of his current deal. Precisely because of that, speculation about the continuation of his career is gaining additional weight, especially in a period in which major clubs usually try to avoid a situation in which an important player enters the final year of his contract without a clear plan. Rodri, however, adopted a calm tone ahead of the tournament and stressed that his current priority is the national team. According to Cadena SER's report from the Spanish national team's camp in Las Rozas, he said that he is focused on the World Cup and that everything else will be discussed after the tournament.

The Spanish captain does not want to fuel transfer speculation

At the Spanish national team's media day, Rodri, according to Cadena SER, spoke about the atmosphere in the squad, the players' condition and his own approach to the tournament, which will be played from June 11 to July 19 in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada. He could not avoid the question of Real Madrid, but he tried to keep it within the framework of usual football speculation. He said it is normal for players' names to be linked with different clubs, especially when they are approaching the final phase of their contracts, but added that his responsibility is now tied to Spain. In translation of his message, the Spanish midfielder stressed that he is calm, that he knows where he stands and that everything related to his future will have to wait until the end of the World Cup. By doing so, he did not deny that talks or interest exist, but neither did he give a signal that leaving Manchester City is already a decided option.

Such a cautious appearance fits the moment in which both the player and the club find themselves. Rodri has been one of Manchester City's most important players since arriving from Atlético Madrid in 2019, and City's official announcement from July 2022 confirms that he then extended his contract until the summer of 2027. For a club that has in recent years built its team around possession, control of rhythm and stability in midfield, his possible departure would be a strategic issue, not just a classic transfer story. On the other hand, the fact that he is approaching the final year of his contract naturally increases public interest and pressure on all sides. In such circumstances, every statement about the future can easily acquire a meaning the player may not have intended to give.

Real Madrid is being mentioned, but there is no decision

The linking of Rodri with Real Madrid is not new, but at the beginning of June it gained additional space because it coincided with the national team gathering and the final phase of preparations for the World Cup. The AFP agency, whose report was carried by The Guardian, stated that Rodri is being mentioned as a potential target in the context of Real Madrid and recalled that the Spanish international had previously left open the possibility of returning to domestic football at some point in his career. The same source points out that Rodri came to City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, which gives the whole story an additional Spanish and Madrid dimension, but does not change the fact that he is currently a Manchester City player. In texts following Real Madrid's possible interest, it is particularly emphasized that this is a world-class player in a position where top-level solutions are not common. That is also why significant attention is being created around his status, even though no official confirmation of transfer negotiations has been published.

For now, Rodri does not want to position himself as an actor in a transfer saga. His message to the public is more like an attempt to calm the subject than to open the door to a departure. He stressed that at this moment he is the captain of the national team and that he is expected to think about the tournament, not about his club future. Such an attitude is important for Spain because this is a player who carries tactical and symbolic weight: he is expected to stabilize the midfield, direct the tempo and be one of the leaders of Luis de la Fuente's team. While the competition is ongoing, any discussion about transfers could become a distraction, especially in a group in which Spain wants to confirm its status as one of the favorites.

A contract until 2027 also puts pressure on Manchester City

On July 12, 2022, Manchester City officially announced that Rodri had signed a contract extension tying him to the club until June 2027. In the same announcement, the club recalled that the midfielder arrived in the summer of 2019 and that in his first three seasons he had developed into a key player in Pep Guardiola's team. City at the time highlighted his professionalism, tactical intelligence and importance in the playing system, and those assessments were later further strengthened through the club's greatest successes. In the meantime, Rodri has become one of the symbols of City's control of midfield, a player who is not necessarily always the most visible in the final phase of moves, but who often determines how the team attacks, defends and plays out of pressure. That is why his future in Manchester is viewed as a question of continuity for the entire project.

Entering the final year of a contract in modern football usually opens up three scenarios: extending the cooperation, selling for a significant transfer fee, or risking that the player later leaves for a much smaller fee, or without compensation when the contract expires. In Rodri's case, the situation is more sensitive because this is not a rotational player, but a footballer whose profile is not easy to replace. Manchester City, according to available information, has not announced a new decision about his contract, nor has an agreement on an extension been confirmed. That is why the period after the World Cup will be important not only for Rodri, but also for City's planning for the following seasons. The club will have to assess whether, and under what conditions, it wants to tie down long-term a player who has meanwhile become one of the most recognizable names in European football.

Rodri arrives at the tournament after years of great success and injuries

Rodri's status in world football has risen strongly in recent years. After the awarding of the 2024 Ballon d'Or, the Premier League announced that the Spanish midfielder had been named the best footballer in the world after a season in which he had played a key role in the successes of Manchester City and the Spanish national team. In addition to the individual recognition, his reputation was also strengthened by his role in City's Champions League triumph in 2023, when he was one of the central players of a team that reached the highest European level. In the national team, according to FIFA and RFEF announcements, he is part of the core of the squad that, after winning Euro 2024, entered a new major cycle with high ambitions. That is why his statements about calmness and focus are particularly important: it is not just one player speaking about his contract, but one of the pillars of the Spanish project ahead of the biggest tournament.

At the same time, his previous knee injury and recovery periods remain part of the wider picture. The Guardian, citing AFP, recalled that after a serious injury sustained in 2024, Rodri faced problems with continuity of appearances. The player himself, in a conversation reported by Cadena SER, said that he comes to the World Cup fresher than in some earlier periods, with fewer matches in his legs and a great desire to lead the team. Such an assessment is important for the Spanish staff because a tournament lasting more than a month requires not only quality, but also physical endurance. Rodri, if healthy and ready, remains one of the key players in the balance between defense and attack.

Spain in a group with Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay

According to FIFA's schedule and the preview of Group H, Spain will play in the first part of the World Cup against Cabo Verde, or the Cape Verde Islands, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. It is a group with a clear favorite, but also with different styles of opponents that can open up very different tactical demands. Cabo Verde will appear as a debutant on the world stage, and such teams often bring energy, compactness and motivation that cannot be measured only by the market value of players. Saudi Arabia has experience of playing at major tournaments and a national team that in recent years has regularly been part of the Asian football elite. Uruguay, a two-time world champion and traditionally one of the toughest South American national teams, represents Spain's biggest test in the fight for the top of the group.

For the 2026 edition, FIFA has confirmed a new format with 48 national teams, 12 groups of four teams and progression to the round of 32 for the two best teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams. This changes the dynamics of the tournament because the group is no longer just a battle for the first two places, but also for the best possible position in the knockout phase. For Spain, which according to FIFA's presentation of the group arrives as the reigning European champion and 2010 world champion, the goal will be to enter the knockout phase with a clear playing identity and as little strain as possible on its key players. In that sense, Rodri's control of rhythm can be decisive, especially against opponents who will try to disrupt Spanish possession and force the team into more direct play than it wants.

De la Fuente has a strong midfield and decisions that will not be simple

Luis de la Fuente, according to FIFA, selected 26 players for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States, and among the prominent names are Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Marc Cucurella. The RFEF in its announcements emphasized the strength of the collective and the importance of the captains in the team, with Rodri being mentioned as one of the current leaders of the national team. Cadena SER reported from the national team camp that there is also a tactical battle for positions in midfield, including competition with Martín Zubimendi, while Pedri and Fabián Ruiz are mentioned as players with a clear role in the middle. This does not mean that Rodri's status has been called into question, but that Spain has a depth most national teams do not have. Precisely that depth can be important in tournament rhythm, in which form, injuries and the profile of opponents change quickly.

In that environment, Rodri is more than a classic defensive midfielder. He is a player who connects the phases of play, directs the ball toward the flanks, closes the space behind the attacking midfielders and helps the defense avoid being separated from the rest of the team. When he is in his best condition, Spain can keep the opponent far from its goal for longer, while at the same time creating pressure after losing the ball. If De la Fuente decides to combine Rodri with technically strong midfielders such as Pedri or Fabián, Spain can retain its recognizable possession, but with more verticality than in some previous cycles. That is why the player's calm about his own future is important on the pitch as well: the national team needs a focused leader, not a player burdened by daily transfer headlines.

The message is clear: first the national team, then club talks

Rodri's statement does not close the question of his future, but it moves it into a time frame that suits him and the national team better. According to available information, Manchester City still has contractual protection until 2027, Real Madrid is being mentioned in media reports, and the Spanish midfielder does not want to conduct negotiations publicly while preparations for the World Cup are ongoing. Such an approach can be interpreted as an attempt to control the situation: he does not promise to stay, he does not announce a departure and he does not allow the topic to completely take over the national team camp. In a football environment in which every sentence is turned into a headline, such restraint is often the most practical choice.

For Manchester City, the coming months will be a period of important decisions, and for Real Madrid and other interested clubs a time to assess whether a realistic opening for a transfer can be created. For Spain, however, what happens before July 19 is most important: Group H, the physical condition of key players and the possibility of turning the European title into a world candidacy. Rodri has publicly set his priority exactly that way. Everything else remains for the period after the tournament, when the pressure of the national team will end and when concrete talks can open about whether he will continue his career in Manchester, return to Spanish football or choose a third path that for now has not been officially confirmed.
