Manchester United monitoring Pierre Kalulu, Juventus wants to keep one of its most reliable defenders

Manchester United is once again being linked with reinforcements in the back line, and among the names mentioned more and more often is Pierre Kalulu, the French defender of Juventus. According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, emissaries of the English club have watched Kalulu live several times in recent months, while British outlet CaughtOffside reported that several Premier League clubs have been making inquiries about the player. The available reports do not yet state that an official offer has been submitted, so Manchester United's interest can currently be described as a phase of serious market monitoring. Kalulu is interesting because he can play as a centre-back, but also cover the right side of the defence, making him the kind of profile that clubs at the top of English football often look for in transfer windows. Juventus, according to Italian media, does not consider him a player it wants to sell, but estimates of a possible offer of around 40 million euros raise the question of where the line lies between the sporting plan and financial logic.

Why Kalulu has become interesting to the Premier League

Kalulu has built the status of a reliable and tactically useful defender in Turin, and precisely that combination is the reason why his name appears in transfer reports. Unlike classic centre-backs who are tied exclusively to the central part of the defence, Kalulu can play in several structures: as a right-sided centre-back in a back three, as a central defender in a pair, but also as a player who closes down the flank in certain phases. Such a profile is especially valuable in teams that want to defend space high up the pitch, move quickly out of pressure and change formation during a match without substitutions. According to Juventus' official profile, in the 2025/26 Serie A season he recorded 37 appearances, 3282 minutes, two goals and four assists, which shows that he was not just a rotational member of the squad. Those figures further explain why he is linked with interest from clubs that need depth, but also a player who can immediately step into a serious competitive role.

For Manchester United, such a player could be important for several reasons. Premier League clubs are increasingly looking for defenders who can carry the ball, cover wide zones and participate in build-up play, rather than merely react in their own penalty area. Kalulu is not the most physically dominant centre-back on the market, but he has speed, mobility and experience of playing in demanding Serie A matches. His age is also an advantage: he was born on 5 June 2000, which means he is entering the stage of his career in which defenders are expected to combine experience with further development. According to Transfermarkt, his market value in spring 2026 was estimated at 32 million euros, while media reports about a possible transfer mention a higher price because of his contract situation and role at Juventus. Such a difference between market valuation and potential transfer fee is common with players whom a club does not actively want to sell.

Juventus bought him from Milan and tied him down until 2029

Kalulu arrived at Juventus from Milan first on loan, and then the Turin club activated the purchase option in June 2025. Juventus stated in an official financial announcement that a fee of 14.3 million euros had been agreed for the permanent acquisition of his registration rights, payable over three financial years, with additional costs of up to 0.3 million euros. In the same document, the club also listed possible bonuses of up to a maximum of three million euros, depending on the achievement of certain sporting objectives. Juventus announced on the same day that Kalulu had signed a contract until 30 June 2029, thereby removing the immediate danger of entering the final years of his deal. This is an important detail in any transfer story because a club that has a player under a long-term contract can negotiate from a much stronger position.

From Milan's side, the transfer was also officially confirmed, with the club announcing that Kalulu had left San Siro and joined Juventus on a permanent basis. Such a development was logical after he quickly gained an important role in Turin and showed that he could cover several different needs in defence. For Juventus, the deal was favourable because, for a relatively moderate fee, it acquired a player who already knew Serie A and did not require a long adaptation period. That is precisely why a potential offer of around 40 million euros, if it really appears, would represent a significant capital gain compared with the amount invested in his purchase. But from a sporting point of view, such a calculation is not simple because Juventus would have to find a replacement for a player who has meanwhile become one of the most regular members of the defence.

Italian media write about a new contract

According to Tuttosport, Juventus is already working to further secure Kalulu in its long-term plans. The Italian newspaper reported that the club is considering a contract extension and a salary increase, with the possibility mentioned of approaching an annual amount of around four million euros. The same reports emphasise that Kalulu is already under contract until 2029, so Juventus is not under pressure to reach an urgent agreement, but wants to act before interest from the Premier League grows into more concrete negotiations. Such a strategy is common among clubs that want to protect a player's value: a new contract sends a message to the market that a sale is not a priority, while at the same time confirming the player's importance to the squad. If the negotiations are successful, the price for potential buyers could rise further.

For Kalulu, a new contract would have both a sporting and a status dimension. At Juventus, he has grown from a loan player into a first-team player, and media interest from England strengthens his negotiating position. Still, the reports so far do not suggest that the player has publicly asked to leave or that Juventus is actively looking for a buyer. Quite the opposite, Italian sources stress that the club sees him as part of the defensive core, especially because of his reliability and ability to cover several positions. Such a situation often leads to two scenarios: either the club extends the contract and closes the topic, or the interested club must offer an amount that changes the plans. At this moment, the available information points more toward the first scenario, but the summer transfer window can quickly change the dynamics.

San Siro as a scouting stage

Italian reports mention that Manchester United scouts watched Kalulu in several matches, including Juventus' match against Milan at San Siro. The official Lega Serie A report confirms that the match between Milan and Juventus in the 34th round of the 2025/26 season was played on 26 April 2026 at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, which carried additional symbolism for Kalulu because he had worn the Milan shirt there before arriving in Turin. Such matches are especially useful for scouts because they show how a player behaves in an emotionally demanding environment, against an opponent that knows him well and in a high-pressure context. For clubs considering an investment of several tens of millions of euros, analysing only statistics is not enough; decisions under pressure, reactions after mistakes and communication with the rest of the defence are equally important. That is why repeated scouting, if the reports are accurate, suggests that Manchester United's interest is neither accidental nor superficial.

San Siro is also important in this story because of Kalulu's past. At Milan, he went through a period of establishment, but also a phase in which he did not always have the continuity a young defender needs. Juventus offered him a new structure and room for greater responsibility, and in return he brought a profile that gives the Turin club tactical flexibility. The return to his former club's stadium was therefore not just an ordinary league match, but also an opportunity to see how much the player had matured after changing surroundings. For English clubs, such details can be decisive because the Premier League requires quick adaptation to the intensity, pressure and rhythm of matches. Kalulu's career so far shows that he knows how to adapt to new roles, which is one of his greatest market advantages.

Juventus' financial logic and the price of 40 million euros

Juventus' financial situation adds another layer to the whole story, but it does not automatically mean that the club will sell important players. According to Juventus' official financial reports, the club recorded a loss of 58.1 million euros for the year ended 30 June 2025, which was a significant improvement compared with the loss of 199.2 million euros a year earlier. The same financial announcement stated that revenues increased thanks to the return to UEFA competitions and participation in FIFA competitions, but also that net financial debt, after the effect of the IFRS 16 standard, stood at 280.2 million euros on 30 June 2025. Such figures explain why every major offer at Juventus must be considered on several levels. The club must balance sporting ambitions, contract amortisation, salaries and the possibility of making a profit in the player market.

If an offer of around 40 million euros for Kalulu really arrived, Juventus would find itself facing a classic dilemma of modern football. On the one hand, such an amount would be several times higher than the fixed fee paid to Milan and could help finance other deals. On the other hand, the sale of a regular defender would create a sporting gap that is not easy to fill, especially because players with a similar combination of speed, experience and tactical flexibility are rare on the market. CaughtOffside reported that the price of 40 million euros is mentioned in the context of interest from English clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa. However, such figures should be viewed as media estimates until they are confirmed by clubs or official documents. In transfer negotiations, initial estimates often serve to test the market, and the final price depends on the player's will, the sporting plan and the seller's financial moment.

What Kalulu would bring to Manchester United

From Manchester United's perspective, Kalulu could bring several elements that are particularly important in a long season. His ability to play in several defensive positions would give the coach greater flexibility when choosing a system, while at the same time reducing the need for separate reinforcements in each position. In matches in which United want to build attacks with three players in the first line of build-up, Kalulu can be the right-sided centre-back who spreads toward the flank. In matches with different requirements, he can play in a pair at centre-back or close down the space behind an attacking full-back. Such adaptability is especially valuable in the Premier League, where the schedule changes quickly and where injuries or suspensions often force coaches into improvisation.

But the transfer would not be without risk. Kalulu is established in Italian football, where defensive play and tactical discipline are often valued differently than in England. The Premier League brings more transitional duels, a greater number of recovery sprints and a different refereeing standard in contact situations. A player arriving from Serie A must adapt to the speed of attacks, but also to the fact that mistakes in carrying the ball out in England are often punished very quickly. On the other hand, precisely his mobility and experience of playing on the flank can ease that transition. For that reason, Kalulu is not just a name on a wish list, but a profile that fits into the broader trend of searching for defenders capable of playing in several zones of the pitch.

Juventus currently retains control of the situation

The most important element of the whole story remains Juventus' contractual control. Kalulu has a valid contract until 30 June 2029, and Italian media write that the club is considering an additional extension and salary increase. This means that Manchester United, if it decides to move from the monitoring phase into the negotiation phase, will not be negotiating with a club that is forced to sell. Juventus can wait, raise the price or completely reject talks if it assesses that a sale would weaken the team. On the other hand, English clubs have the financial strength that can place even players with long contracts at the centre of serious negotiations. That is precisely why the development of the situation will depend on whether Manchester United's interest remains at the level of scouting reports or turns into a concrete offer.

For now, it is most accurate to say that Kalulu is one of the defenders around whom a summer market story is forming, but not a player whose departure from Juventus is inevitable. Italian sources emphasise Juventus' intention to keep him, while English reports point out that his price and profile fit the needs of Premier League clubs. In such a balance of power, every next step will be important: a potential new contract in Turin would significantly reduce the room for a transfer, while an official offer of around 40 million euros would open a serious discussion within the club. Kalulu has meanwhile grown from a player who arrived on loan into a footballer around whom sporting and financial interests intersect. That is why his future will be one of the topics worth following in the period when clubs begin to make their plans for the new season more concrete.
