Manchester United signs Andrey Santos: Brazilian midfielder arrives from Chelsea in a deal worth around £50 million
Manchester United confirmed the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on 13 July 2026, giving Michael Carrick his first major signing since taking permanent charge of the team in May. The Old Trafford club announced that the 22-year-old had signed a contract until June 2031, with an option to extend it for another season, while his arrival remains subject to the customary registration process. The financial details were not officially disclosed, but Sky Sports reports that United will pay a guaranteed £48 million and a further £2 million in bonuses. According to the same source, Chelsea also included a ten-per-cent sell-on clause in the deal.
Santos arrives in Manchester at a time when United are thoroughly reshaping the structure of their midfield for the 2026/27 season. Carrick's team secured a return to the Champions League, but at the same time lost the experienced Casemiro, while injuries and the fluctuating availability of other midfielders further highlighted the need for new solutions. The arrival of the young Brazil international is therefore viewed not only as an investment in the future, but also as a move that should immediately increase the energy, mobility and quality of play in the middle of the pitch. United see him as a player capable of linking the ball-winning phase with the construction of attacks, but also as a footballer who has yet to reach his full developmental potential.
Contract until 2031 and an important role in Carrick's project
In their official announcement, Manchester United emphasised Santos's technical qualities, his work in both directions and his leadership attributes. Director of football Jason Wilcox described him as a midfielder who can influence the game in both the defensive and attacking phases and confirmed that the Brazilian had been one of the key targets for a position the club wanted to strengthen early in pre-season. Such wording shows that the transfer was not conceived as a short-term addition to the squad, but as part of a broader plan to build the team under Carrick.
Santos himself said through the club's channels that he regarded joining Manchester United as a dream come true. He particularly highlighted the opportunity to work with Carrick, a former top-class midfielder whom he believes can help him in the next phase of his career. The Brazilian also mentioned the club's ambition, the quality of the dressing room and his desire to fight for the biggest trophies alongside his new teammates. According to the published information, he will wear the number 17 shirt at Old Trafford.
Carrick signed a permanent contract with United on 22 May 2026, having managed the team in an interim role since January. His connection with the club runs much deeper than his current coaching tenure: as a player, he made 464 appearances, won five English league titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup and other trophies, before also working on the first-team coaching staff. For a young midfielder such as Santos, that cooperation could have particular value because Carrick knows from his own experience the demands of the position, the pace of the Premier League and the pressure that comes with playing for one of the most closely followed clubs in the world.
Why United decided to invest around £50 million
Santos's profile fits the direction in which Manchester United want to develop their midfield. He is a player who has primarily been used as a central or defensive midfielder during his career so far, but his characteristics are not limited to protecting the space in front of the defence. He is capable of aggressively attacking second balls, tracking opposing midfielders, carrying the ball forward and appearing in finishing positions. That combination allows him to play as a so-called number six, but also as a slightly more advanced midfielder who contributes to pressing and makes runs into the penalty area.
Chelsea's official website described his game, even when he first arrived from Vasco da Game, as a combination of defensive instinct and an attacking threat from deeper positions. That profile developed further during his time in France and his first full season in Chelsea's team. In the victory over Tottenham in May 2026, for example, he scored his first Premier League goal, made five successful tackles, won six of eight duels and completed all 38 of his passes. Chelsea also reported that he had become only the second club midfielder since Opta began tracking data in the 2003/04 season to record a 100-per-cent passing accuracy throughout an entire league match while attempting at least 30 passes.
Such figures do not mean that Santos is already a completely developed player. On the contrary, the size of the transfer fee also reflects an assessment of his future development. He is 22 years old, has experience in Brazil, England and France, as well as his first appearances for Brazil's senior national team, but he has not yet spent several consecutive seasons as a regular first-team player at one of Europe's biggest clubs. United are accepting part of that developmental risk, but at the same time they are acquiring a player whose physical, technical and tactical qualities have already been tested in the Premier League.
From Vasco da Game through loan spells to his first full season at Chelsea
Andrey Nascimento dos Santos was born on 3 May 2004 in Rio de Janeiro and developed as a footballer in the Vasco da Game academy system. He established himself in the Brazilian club's senior team as a teenager and attracted interest from numerous European clubs. Chelsea signed him in January 2023, after which he temporarily returned to Vasco so that he could continue playing and resolve the administrative requirements necessary for his move to England.
His first attempt to adapt to the Premier League did not go as expected. During the 2023/24 season, he was loaned to Nottingham Forest, but he did not receive consistent playing time there, so Chelsea recalled him in early 2024 and sent him to Strasbourg. His spell in France's Ligue 1 became the key stage of his development. According to data from the Brazilian Football Confederation, he played 34 matches and scored 11 goals for Strasbourg in the 2024/25 season, an exceptionally high return for a midfielder of his age. He was also entrusted with leadership responsibilities within the team, while his period in France helped him improve his decision-making, positioning and off-the-ball play.
After returning to London, he earned a place in Chelsea's rotation. Sky Sports reports that he made 43 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, while he played 47 times in total for Chelsea's first team. He featured in 27 Premier League matches that season and scored one goal, while the competition's official statistics record a total of 28 league appearances in England. He was part of the Chelsea squad that won the 2025 Club World Cup, which gave him experience of a major international tournament and of working within a team featuring extremely strong competition for places.
Why he did not have a guaranteed place at Chelsea
Santos's departure from Stamford Bridge does not mean that Chelsea did not consider him a promising player. On the contrary, the fact that the London club retained a percentage of a future sale indicates their assessment that his value could continue to rise in the years ahead. However, the path to a permanent place in the starting line-up was complicated. Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández already occupied key roles in midfield, while Chelsea also have other young midfielders on whom they have spent significant sums in recent years.
Before the transfer was completed, The Guardian reported that Santos was open to leaving in order to receive more regular playing time. Sky Sports additionally stated that his position was made more difficult by the fact that Chelsea will not play in European competitions during the 2026/27 season, reducing the number of matches and the scope for extensive rotation. In those circumstances, United can offer him a clearer development pathway and a more realistic opportunity for an important role, while Chelsea receive a significant fee and retain a financial interest in his future progress.
For the London club, the deal also has accounting value. Santos arrived from Brazil as a teenager and is now leaving for a fee that could reach £50 million after all bonuses are activated. Although the clubs did not disclose the precise accounting structure of the transaction, it is a sale that gives Chelsea additional room to reshape their squad. United, on the other hand, are paying the market price for a player who is already familiar with English football but still has significant potential for growth and possible resale value.
How Santos could transform United's midfield
From a tactical perspective, Santos gives Carrick several options. He can play as the deepest midfielder in a three-man midfield, as one of two central players in a 4-2-3-1 formation or as a dynamic number eight who supports the attack through pressing and runs from deeper positions. His ability to win the ball should help the team in moments when they lose possession, while his security in passing could be important against opponents who press high when United attempt to play out from defence.
His arrival is also important because of the generational transition. Casemiro's experience and trophy-filled career brought authority to the centre of United's team for years, but the club are now looking for a younger and more mobile foundation. Santos alone will not solve every problem in midfield, nor can he be expected to assume all responsibility immediately. Nevertheless, his age, profile and the length of his contract give Carrick the opportunity to gradually shape a recognisable style of play around him.
The key will be adapting to a different level of expectations. At Chelsea, he was one of numerous young players in a large squad, whereas in Manchester every one of his performances will be analysed from the outset and compared with the transfer fee. Particular attention will be paid to whether he can maintain discipline in positional play, make quick decisions under pressure and remain effective during the demanding schedule of the Premier League and Champions League. His previous experience in three different football environments should help him, but only a consistent run of appearances will provide the true answer.
The first major signing of a new era at Old Trafford
The transfer of Andrey Santos therefore carries significance that goes beyond the arrival of another young player. It is the first major move through which Manchester United have clearly demonstrated the profile they want in Carrick's team: a technically secure, physically active midfielder with room for development, capable of addressing present needs while also becoming an important part of the long-term project. Completing the deal early will allow him to join pre-season training and become familiar with Carrick's demands, his teammates and his new surroundings as quickly as possible.
For Santos, leaving Chelsea is an opportunity to turn a period of occasional appearances into a stable role at the highest level. For United, it is an investment of around £50 million in a player whose value will be measured not only by goals and assists, but also by his ability to bring balance, intensity and control to the team. Should he receive the consistent playing time he lacked in London, the Brazilian midfielder could become one of the central figures in the new United side. However, the high transfer fee, long contract and status as the first major signing also mean that his adaptation period will be short and expectations will be extremely high from the very beginning.
