Barcelona weighs Rashford's future, Liverpool seeks a new beginning after Arne Slot's departure

The summer transfer window has not yet officially opened its most important deals, but two major questions are already setting the tone of the football market: will Marcus Rashford stay at Barcelona and who will take over Liverpool after Arne Slot's departure. In both cases, these are decisions that go beyond the usual personnel changes, because they touch on the clubs' sporting direction, financial discipline and attitude toward players or coaches who marked the season that has just ended. According to available information, Barcelona wants to retain flexibility in negotiations with Manchester United, although Rashford's loan has been agreed until June 30, 2026, with a buy option. Liverpool, meanwhile, according to the club's official announcement, confirmed that Arne Slot is leaving his position as head coach with immediate effect, after an internal assessment of a season in which the club failed to defend the English league title, but still secured qualification for the Champions League.

The original information mentions a buyout clause for Rashford worth around £26 million, or approximately €30 million, but Barcelona has not yet officially confirmed that it will activate it. According to Goal.com, the Catalan club has opened talks with Manchester United, but is not inclined to pay the full amount of the buy option and is considering different agreement models, including a lower fee or a new loan with an obligation to buy. Such a scenario fits into the broader context of Barcelona's operations, as the club has in recent years carefully managed squad costs and player registrations, especially when it comes to large salaries and transfers in the attacking line. On the other hand, Manchester United, according to earlier ESPN information, does not consider the situation urgent because it expects it could find other interested clubs for Rashford if Barcelona does not reach an agreement.

Rashford's loan delivered a sporting impact, but the decision on the buyout remains open

FC Barcelona announced on July 23, 2025, that it had agreed with Manchester United on the loan of Marcus Rashford until June 30, 2026, with an option to buy the English forward. The club stressed at the time that Rashford was arriving as a player who could cover several attacking positions, while the footballer himself spoke about his ambition to help the team win trophies. According to the player's official profile on Barcelona's website, Rashford recorded 49 appearances, 14 goals and 11 assists for the club in the 2025/26 season, making him an important part of Hansi Flick's rotation. Barcelona describes him as a right-footed forward who can play in several positions in the final third, take on opponents in dribbles and finish moves, which was important in a season in which the team sought additional depth alongside Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski.

Rashford's spell at Barcelona gained additional weight after the club won the Spanish league title for the 2025/26 season. According to FC Barcelona's official website, the team confirmed its 29th league title on May 10, 2026, with a 2:0 victory against Real Madrid, and the same club announcement states that Rashford and Ferran Torres scored the goals in that match. That meant Rashford, together with several other players, secured his first Spanish league title, which is a sporting argument in favour of his staying. Still, the trophy and a concrete contribution on the pitch do not automatically mean Barcelona will accept the terms of the existing loan agreement without negotiations. In today's market environment, clubs often distinguish between a player's sporting usefulness and the financial sustainability of a transfer, especially when it involves a player with a large contract at his parent club.

In Barcelona's case, the key question is not only whether Rashford can help the team, but also at what price. If the buy option is indeed set at around £26 million, as English and international media report, it is an amount that is relatively moderate in modern football for an experienced forward with Premier League and international experience. But the overall package also includes salary, commissions, registration space and the question of how many minutes Rashford would have in the long term in competition with other attacking options. Barcelona is also monitoring other players on the market, which does not necessarily mean giving up on Rashford, but it shows that the club does not want to enter negotiations without an alternative. Such an approach increases pressure on Manchester United, but the English club can still count on interest from other markets if it decides it does not want to sell the player below its expectations.

Manchester United does not have to rush, but Rashford's role in the plans remains unclear

Manchester United formally still controls Rashford's future, because the loan to Barcelona ends on June 30, 2026, if there is no permanent transfer or new agreement. According to ESPN, the English club had previously been relaxed about how the situation was developing and believed that, in the event Barcelona backed away from the buyout, it could find other buyers for Rashford. Such a position is not unusual, because Rashford has a recognisable international profile, experience of playing in the Champions League and the ability to cover the left wing and central attacking areas. But his future in Manchester also depends on the club's sporting plans, the role that a new or existing coaching staff would assign to him and whether he can fit into the squad's financial framework for the 2026/27 season.

For Rashford, staying at Barcelona could represent a continuation of his sporting recovery after a period of changes at Manchester United and a loan to Aston Villa in the second half of the 2024/25 season. Barcelona's official profile recalls that he made 17 appearances, scored four goals and provided five assists at Aston Villa under Unai Emery before arriving in Catalonia. That transitional phase is important for understanding his status: Rashford is no longer only a symbol of United's academy, but a player whose career is developing away from Old Trafford. If Barcelona manages to negotiate terms that suit it, it could get a player who already knows the system, the dressing room and the demands of the Spanish champions. If the negotiations diverge, Rashford will return to a situation in which his quality is not in question, but his long-term destination is once again open.

Liverpool confirmed the end of Slot's tenure after two years

The other major story comes from Anfield, where Liverpool officially confirmed that Arne Slot is leaving the role of head coach. The club's announcement states that the Dutchman took over the team in June 2024, won the 20th league title in his first season, was named LMA Manager of the Year and led the team to the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League round of 16. Liverpool also highlighted that Slot secured a second consecutive qualification for the Champions League in the 2025/26 season and took the team to the quarter-finals of that competition. Despite this, the club's ownership structure stated in the announcement that it had concluded a change of direction was needed so the team could continue to develop.

The official tone of Liverpool's announcement was extremely grateful toward Slot, but the message was clear: the club believes the team's current trajectory requires a different approach. According to the Premier League table for the 2025/26 season, Liverpool finished the league in fifth place with 60 points, behind Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa. Compared with the title from the previous season, that drop was reason enough for a serious review, especially after major investment in the squad and the expectation that the club would remain in the fight for the top. The Guardian reported that the season included 19 defeats in all competitions and that concerns had emerged within the club about the style of play, intensity and the direction in which the team was moving. Liverpool avoided harsh wording in its official announcement, but stressed that the decision was not taken lightly and that it did not diminish Slot's contribution.

Slot's tenure therefore remains complex to assess. On the one hand, he won the league title in the season immediately after the Jürgen Klopp era, which in itself is a major achievement because he took over the team at a moment of emotional and sporting transition. On the other hand, the second season showed how quickly perceptions of success change in elite football, especially at a club that expects constant competition for domestic and European trophies. Liverpool specifically emphasised in the statement that Slot leaves with a league title and that his family will always be welcome at Anfield. Such wording preserves his legacy, but at the same time confirms that the results and style of play at the end of his tenure were insufficient for the cooperation to continue.

Iraola emerges as a logical candidate for a more aggressive Liverpool

Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth manager, is most often mentioned as the leading candidate to succeed Arne Slot. The Guardian reported that Liverpool is considering a shift toward a more aggressive and direct style of play and that such a vision increases the chances of the Basque coach arriving. At Bournemouth, Iraola built a reputation as a coach who demands high intensity, pressing and a bolder push forward, which in the English context is often associated with the kind of energy Liverpool had during the best phases of the Klopp era. An important element of the story is also his relationship with Richard Hughes, Liverpool's current sporting director, who previously worked at Bournemouth and knows Iraola's work well. That connection does not guarantee an agreement, but it can make it easier to assess the coach and his demands.

AFC Bournemouth announced in April 2026 that Iraola would leave at the end of the season, making him more available to clubs looking for a new manager. According to reports from England, he left Bournemouth after three years of work, during a period in which the club stabilised itself in the Premier League and reached a historically high level of results. The Premier League table shows that Bournemouth finished the 2025/26 season sixth with 57 points, immediately behind Liverpool, which further explains why Iraola is interesting to bigger clubs. For Liverpool, his arrival would represent an attempt to restore intensity and a clearer structure to a team which, according to media analyses, looked slower and more predictable at the end of the season than expected. Still, moving from Bournemouth to Liverpool carries an entirely different level of pressure, because at Anfield it is not only progress that is valued, but also winning trophies.

Iraola's coaching profile was shaped before his arrival in England. As a former Athletic Bilbao defender, he built a reputation as an intelligent and disciplined player, and his coaching path took him through AEK Larnaca, Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano to Bournemouth. Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano were particularly important for the development of his approach, because with teams on smaller budgets he sought active football against stronger opponents. In the Premier League, that approach gained additional visibility, especially because Bournemouth was not a club expected to fight for European places. If he takes over Liverpool, Iraola would have to show that his method can be transferred to a dressing room with bigger stars, a broader squad and constant public scrutiny.

Two decisions show how much the market has connected sport and finance

Rashford's case and Liverpool's search for a coach are different stories, but they are connected by the same logic of modern football. Clubs no longer make decisions only based on impressions from the pitch, but simultaneously assess salaries, contractual possibilities, the age of players or coaches, market alternatives and long-term compatibility with the project. Barcelona can value Rashford's contribution to the league title while still trying to lower the price or find a more favourable payment structure. Liverpool can respect Slot's league title and professionalism, but still conclude that a different type of coach is needed for the next phase. In both cases, the decisions will only be measured later, when it becomes clear whether the clubs chose continuity, a clean break or a controlled compromise.

For Barcelona, the next window is important because it must decide whether it wants to turn Rashford from a loan solution into a long-term part of the team. If an agreement is reached, the English forward will gain stability at a club where he has already won a title and left a concrete statistical mark. If there is no agreement, Manchester United will once again have to resolve the question of a player who has a significant reputation, but whose path has moved away from Old Trafford. For Liverpool, meanwhile, the search for Arne Slot's successor marks the beginning of a new cycle after an exceptionally short period in which a league title and a coaching departure happened within just two seasons. While Barcelona and Manchester United prepare for negotiations, and Liverpool searches for a new dressing-room leader, the market is already showing that the summer of 2026 will be marked by decisions that are as financial as they are sporting.
