Montenegro U20 routed the USA in Jinzhong: 52 goals to confirm the main round
The Montenegrin women's junior U20 handball national team achieved one of the most convincing victories of the current part of the 2026 Women's Junior World Championship, defeating the United States national team 52:23 in Group F. The match was played on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at the City Gymnasium in Jinzhong, a city in the Chinese province of Shanxi, and the official match report of the International Handball Federation states that Montenegro already led 26:12 at half-time. The final margin of 29 goals clearly shows how much the European side dominated in rhythm, finishing and the quick transition from defence to attack. According to the IHF report from the second competition day, with this victory Montenegro practically secured passage to the main round, while the American national team was left without realistic chances of continuing the fight for a higher ranking. The result is especially striking because Montenegro scored 52 goals from 62 shots, which according to the official match statistics means an exceptional 84 percent overall shooting efficiency.
Early separation and control of the match from the first quarter
The IHF official schedule and match report confirm that the encounter began at 11:45 local time in Jinzhong, or 03:45 GMT, and the opening part of the match already showed that the American defence would struggle to stop the Montenegrin attack. Montenegro quickly imposed a high tempo, spread the play toward the wings and used the opponents' mistakes for easy goals from fast breaks. In its report, the IHF highlighted that the European national team gained a secure lead early and then did not allow the USA to return to the match. The 26:12 advantage at half-time was not only the result of individual quality, but also of collective discipline in the attacking phase, because a large number of players took part in the scoring. In the second half the rhythm did not drop: Montenegro again scored 26 goals, while the American side remained on 11 goals after the break.
Such a course of the match is particularly important in the tournament context because in the group stage, alongside points, goal difference is often also counted, and it can shape the schedule and psychological position ahead of the main round. According to official IHF data, Montenegro recorded two victories in its first two appearances in Group F: against Iceland 34:24 in the opener and against the USA 52:23 in the second round. Thus its overall tally after two matches reached 86 goals scored and 47 conceded. Although the final group ranking must be confirmed after the third round, the victory against the USA gave the team an exceptionally strong starting position. It is especially important that Montenegro settled the match without relying on one player, but through a wide distribution of responsibilities.
An attack almost without misses
The official IHF statistics show that the difference in finishing was one of the key reasons for such a convincing outcome. The USA scored 23 goals from 55 shots, with 42 percent efficiency, while Montenegro scored 52 times from 62 attempts. In handball, such a percentage over an entire match is exceptionally high, especially in a world championship match for the under-20 age category, where due to high intensity and the developmental phase of the players a larger number of technical errors often appears. Montenegro, according to the IHF match report, was especially dangerous from close range, where it scored 28 goals, and from fast breaks, from which it registered 14 goals. These data explain why the American national team did not manage to slow the match down or shift it into a slower, positional rhythm.
The Montenegrin attack functioned in several zones. According to the official figures, the national team scored seven goals from the pivot position, five from the wings, seven from outside shots from nine metres and three from seven-metre throws. Such a distribution made the USA's defensive adjustments more difficult because the pressure could not be directed toward only one attacking axis. The IHF also emphasised the role of fast attacks in its report, noting that Montenegro had already scored nine times from fast breaks by the 45th minute, while the official statistics ultimately recorded a total of 14 such goals. In practice this meant that every lost ball by the American side carried a high price. Montenegro turned those situations into easy finishes, which further raised confidence and widened the gap.
Savić, Ramusović and a long list of scorers
The IHF match report shows that Montenegro had a very broad attacking picture, with a number of players finishing moves with a high success rate. Nina Ramusović was perfect with eight goals from eight shots, and Ivana Savić, whom the IHF had also singled out after the opener against Iceland, again played a very efficient match and scored seven goals from seven attempts. Bojana Peličić and Anđela Guberinić each added six goals from seven shots, while Anđelina Orbović also scored six times. Such a distribution of goals testifies to the depth of the squad, but also to the fact that the coaching staff could rotate without losing attacking efficiency. In matches with such a margin, rotation is not only a question of rest, but also of developing confidence among players who will be needed in the later stages of the competition.
Alongside them, Anika Jovanović scored four goals, Marina Dobrković also four, while Sanja Andrijašević, Ksenija Kuzman and Maja Ceklić each added three. Martina Knežević and Natalija Lekić also entered the scorers' list once each, which further confirmed that the Montenegrin national team did not depend on one line of play. The IHF named goalkeeper Vanja Živković player of the match, stating that she had 15 saves and a 56 percent save efficiency. That recognition describes well the balance of Montenegro's performance: although the headline of the match logically belonged to the attack with 52 goals, defensive security and goalkeeping interventions enabled a large number of transition situations. When a team simultaneously defends at a high level and finishes attacks with such great precision, the margin in junior handball can very quickly become double-digit and then continue to grow.
The USA paid the price for turnovers and a difficult schedule
The American national team arrived in Jinzhong with a clear developmental goal, and the IHF stated in a separate text about the USA programme that the junior side is appearing at the Women's Junior World Championship for the third consecutive time. The same source recalls that the United States finished 31st in the 2022 edition and 30th in 2024, which shows that this is a programme still being built in competition with far more experienced handball environments. In Group F the American side received three European opponents: Czechia, Montenegro and Iceland. Already after the first round, the IHF assessed that the draw for the USA was particularly demanding, and the defeat to Czechia 21:44 additionally underlined the difference in experience and squad depth. Against Montenegro, that challenge was repeated in an even more pronounced form.
According to the IHF report, the American national team lost 29 balls, which opened a large number of transition attacks for Montenegro. Maggie Doherty Dahllof, who against Czechia was the standout American player with 13 goals from 22 shots, was held to four goals against Montenegro. That was one of the tactically important details of the match because the USA lost the player who had carried the largest share of attacking responsibility in the first appearance. Ahead of the tournament, the IHF announced that a large part of the American roster plays in European clubs, but also that the team still has to build automatisms and chemistry in a short period of preparation. In that light, the defeat to Montenegro can also be read as a lesson about the speed of decision-making, physical stability and the quality of recovery runs at the level of the best junior national teams.
Group F has already taken clear shape
With this victory, Montenegro remained perfect after two rounds, and the IHF announced in a separate report that Montenegro and Czechia from Group F had secured passage to the main round. Czechia defeated Iceland 33:23 on the same day, after convincingly beating the USA 44:21 in the opener. This means that their head-to-head duel in the third round will decide first place in the group and the points carried into the continuation of the competition. According to the IHF schedule, Montenegro and Czechia play on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at the City Gymnasium in Jinzhong, starting at 14:00 local time. In the same time block of Group F, Iceland and the USA meet earlier, at 11:45 local time, in a match that will decide the better position before going to the President's Cup.
The competition format gives the third round additional weight. According to the IHF rules published before the draw, 32 national teams are arranged in eight groups of four teams, and the two best from each group enter the main round. The remaining two national teams from each group continue the competition in the President's Cup. In the main round, the result against the other qualified team from the same group can have a direct impact on the later standings, so the duel between Montenegro and Czechia is not only a matter of prestige. Montenegro enters it with a better goal difference after two rounds, but also with confirmation that its attack can produce a high number of goals against different defensive profiles. Czechia, on the other hand, arrives with two equally convincing victories and with a very strong goalkeeping performance against Iceland.
The broader significance of the victory for the Montenegrin generation
Montenegro celebrated 34:24 against Iceland in the tournament opener, and the IHF then highlighted strong defence, rotation depth and the attacking contribution of Ivana Savić, Martina Knežević, Ksenija Gašević and Sanja Andrijašević. The second appearance against the USA followed that pattern, but raised it to an even higher level of efficiency. The team scored 86 goals in two matches, which is an indicator of high rhythm and confidence, but also of the ability to create a large number of quality shots. In younger national-team categories such production often reflects generational depth: it is not enough to have one top-level player; it is necessary to build a system in which the ball quickly reaches the best position. That is exactly what Montenegro demonstrated in Jinzhong.
The 52:23 victory does not in itself guarantee success in the final stages, because the main round will bring higher-quality opponents and less space for easy goals. But it clearly shows the current level of the Montenegrin U20 national team and confirms that the team can punish every series of opponents' mistakes. After the match, the IHF stated that Montenegro had practically secured a place in the next stage, and a later report on other matches of the day confirmed its progress together with Czechia. For the coaching staff, the most important task before the end of the group will be to maintain the balance between attacking efficiency and defensive discipline that opened space for fast breaks. If it maintains such a pattern against Czechia as well, Montenegro will be able to enter the main round not only with points but also with clear confirmation that it is one of the most dangerous attacking teams of the tournament so far.
