Alonso confirms Mudryk's return to Chelsea, but warns that full reintegration will take time

Mykhailo Mudryk is available to Chelsea again after the conclusion of the anti-doping proceedings that kept the Ukrainian winger from playing an official match for almost 20 months. The London club's manager, Xabi Alonso, confirmed that the 25-year-old will join the squad during the next stage of the preseason tour in Hong Kong, where the coaching staff will begin assessing his physical condition, rhythm and ability to return to daily work with the first team. Alonso welcomed the resolution of the case and stressed that Chelsea want to help the player feel part of the group again, but at the same time refused to create an expectation that Mudryk would immediately return to the starting lineup or receive a predetermined amount of playing time. His return will therefore not be merely a matter of administrative availability, but also a lengthy sporting process following a period in which he was unable to train and compete in the usual club environment. Chelsea have gained an additional attacking option ahead of the new season, but Alonso made it clear that every subsequent decision will depend on his progress in training.
FA concluded the proceedings with WADA's consent
The Football Association announced on July 31, 2026, that the disciplinary proceedings against Mudryk and his appeal had been resolved through an agreement reached with the consent of the World Anti-Doping Agency. According to the FA's official statement, Mudryk accepted that he had committed anti-doping rule violations and agreed to a period of ineligibility corresponding to the time he had already spent out of competition. He was therefore not declared innocent, nor was the original analysis retroactively annulled, but his sanction ended on the date of the agreement and, as of July 30, he is no longer considered ineligible to compete. This legal nuance is important for understanding the entire case because the end of the ban is not based on a claim that the sample did not contain a prohibited substance, but on a new technical context and other circumstances taken into account by the parties. The FA explicitly confirmed that the player may return to competition with immediate effect.
The case began after an out-of-competition doping test conducted on October 22, 2024, when a low concentration of meldonium was found in Mudryk's sample. The FA informed him of the finding on December 4 of the same year and immediately imposed a provisional suspension, while formal charges for breaches of anti-doping regulations were brought on May 23, 2025. An Independent Regulatory Commission heard the case from January 7 to 9, 2026, and concluded that the rule violations had been proven, after which it imposed a four-year period of ineligibility. Mudryk subsequently filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, meaning that the decision did not represent the final stage of the proceedings. The agreement between the player, the FA and WADA ultimately closed the appeal proceedings before the CAS issued its final ruling.
Why the new technical standard changed the player's position
The key element in the resolution was the adoption of a new WADA technical document on minimum reporting levels for certain substances in laboratories. The FA explained that the changes contained in document TD2027MRL are not retroactive, but that under the new rules the concentration of meldonium found in Mudryk's sample would not now be reported as an adverse analytical finding. Consequently, if the same sample were collected under the new regulatory framework, there would be no anti-doping rule violation. WADA states that the purpose of the technical document is to standardize the way accredited laboratories report findings for certain substances that otherwise do not have a conventionally established threshold. The document is formally due to enter into force on January 1, 2027, but its scientific basis was one of the reasons why the parties agreed to a negotiated settlement.
Meldonium nevertheless remains on the list of prohibited substances and has not become permitted for athletes. It is a metabolic modulator that WADA added to the list of prohibited substances in 2016, while the principle of strict liability still means that an athlete is responsible for substances found in their body. The change relates to the laboratory reporting level for very low concentrations, not to the removal of meldonium from the anti-doping list. This is precisely why the FA's statement simultaneously presents two apparently contradictory facts: Mudryk accepted the rule violation, but under the new technical standard the same result would remain below the reporting level. The agreement was concluded under the provisions of the World Anti-Doping Code that allow cases to be resolved by agreement in special circumstances.
Alonso wants Mudryk in the squad, but without shortcuts
After Chelsea's friendly match against Tottenham in Sydney, Alonso said that the club was, above all, pleased for the player himself. He stressed that people outside Mudryk's immediate circle could hardly fully understand what he had been through during such a long period without matches and without working collectively with his teammates. According to the coach, Chelsea want to bring him back into the group and provide him with the support of the club, the coaching staff and the dressing room. Alonso acknowledged that the club had not expected such quick and favorable news at this stage of the preparations, which is why the reintegration plan must be developed as the process unfolds. The first phase will not be focused on determining his role in the starting lineup, but on returning to the basic structure of professional football: group training sessions, tactical tasks, physical workloads and competitive rhythm.
The Spanish coach described Mudryk as a special player whom he had followed since his time at Shakhtar Donetsk. He particularly highlighted his speed, strength in one-on-one situations and ability to create an opportunity through an individual run where a team move appears to have reached a dead end. Those qualities explain why Chelsea do not want to close the door on his return in advance, despite his long absence and the changes that have taken place in the squad in the meantime. Nevertheless, Alonso warned that Mudryk would need time and that only after his first collective training sessions would it be possible to assess whether he was progressing faster or more slowly than expected. The message was unequivocal: the club want to include him, but he will have to earn his status in the squad again through work.
Hong Kong as the starting point of the return
Mudryk is expected to join Chelsea in Hong Kong, the next stop on the tour after two matches in Sydney. According to the club's official schedule, Chelsea will play Juventus at Kai Tak Stadium on August 5, followed by warm-up matches in Jakarta and Malaysia and a final fixture against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on August 15. It has not been confirmed whether Mudryk will be ready to play as early as Hong Kong, and Alonso has not announced a date for his return to the pitch. Considering that he has gone almost 20 months without an official appearance, it is more realistic to expect the medical and conditioning staff to assess his current state first and then gradually increase his workload. Availability under the rules does not automatically mean readiness for a high-intensity match.
Such an approach is particularly important because individual work, even when organized to a high standard, cannot fully replace daily training with the team. The winger must once again coordinate his accelerations, changes of direction and duels with the tactical demands of a new coach, while also rebuilding automatic patterns in pressing, defensive positioning and combinations with teammates. Alonso took charge of Chelsea on July 1, 2026, on a four-year contract, meaning Mudryk is entering a system he has not yet experienced under competitive conditions. The coach must therefore simultaneously assess his individual level and find a place for him within a playing model that is still being established. Hong Kong will be the beginning of the process, not final confirmation that he has returned to his former level.
His last match ended with a goal in Germany
Mudryk made his last official appearance for Chelsea on November 28, 2024, in a 2-0 victory against Heidenheim in the UEFA Conference League. According to the UEFA match report, he played the entire match and scored the London side's second goal in the 86th minute after Christopher Nkunku had opened the scoring. Three days later, he was an unused substitute in the Premier League victory against Aston Villa, but after that he no longer appeared on an official team sheet. His return therefore comes after a break during which he missed an entire competitive season, a change of head coach and the development of new hierarchies in the dressing room. Even for a player without health problems, such an interruption represents a major challenge in a league where decisions are often made in a fraction of a second.
The Ukrainian joined Chelsea from Shakhtar in January 2023 and signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract. At the time, the club presented him as an exceptionally quick and technically gifted winger, particularly dangerous when running directly at an opponent and cutting inside from the left onto his stronger right foot. Before the suspension, he made 73 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions and scored ten goals, with flashes of elite quality accompanied by periods of inconsistent performances. His speed and dribbling ability were never in question, but he was expected to produce more consistently in the final third and develop a better connection with the rest of the attack. Now, in addition to regaining his physical form, he will have to rebuild the continuity that he had not managed to fully establish even before the interruption.
The return changes the competition, but guarantees no role
Mudryk's renewed availability gives Alonso an additional option in the wide positions and increases Chelsea's tactical flexibility. A player capable of stretching the pitch, attacking the space behind a defense and taking responsibility in isolation can be valuable against opponents who leave space near the touchline or maintain a high defensive line. At the same time, almost two years without competitive rhythm mean that he cannot be viewed as a conventional new signing who has completed a full preseason cycle. Alonso has not promised him a place in the starting eleven, has not established a target number of minutes and has not ruled out the possibility that his return could take considerably longer than a few weeks. His words point to an individualized plan in which each phase will depend on the player's reaction to the increasing workload.
It is also important for Chelsea that the decision came while the transfer window remains open and while the final squad for the 2026/27 season is still being shaped. Mudryk has a long-term contract, but the recent period has created sporting uncertainty that legal eligibility alone cannot remove. The club must first determine where he stands in relation to the other attackers, whether he can meet Alonso's demands without an increased risk of injury and how much time he needs to regain his confidence. Only after that will it be possible to discuss his playing time, role or any other potential solutions for the season realistically. For now, the only firm decision is that he will once again be included in first-team work.
De Zerbi welcomed the resolution of the case
The positive outcome was also welcomed by Roberto De Zerbi, the Tottenham coach who worked with Mudryk at Shakhtar. The Italian described him as a good person and a very high-quality footballer and expressed hope that he would once again demonstrate his abilities in the new season after a difficult period. De Zerbi played an important role in his development in Ukraine, where Mudryk grew from an exceptionally talented young player into one of Europe's most sought-after wingers. His reaction further confirms that the return is being viewed not only through the legal conclusion of the case, but also through the human cost of a long absence from professional football. Nevertheless, the final answer to the question of how close Mudryk can come to his former level will be provided by the pitch, not by statements of support.
He now faces two separate but interconnected tasks. The first is to return his body to the level required for training sessions and matches in the highest tier of English football, and the second is to regain trust through daily work and performances. Chelsea will allow him to return to the team environment, but the competition and the new coach's demands will not be softened because of the circumstances that preceded his return. Alonso has opened the door, emphasized the qualities that once drew the attention of the biggest clubs to Mudryk and promised institutional support. At the same time, he has set a boundary for expectations: the return to the list of available players happened immediately, but a return to the pitch and to an important role still has to be earned.
