Bayer 04 Leverkusen - 1. FC Union Berlin: an early test of ambitions in the new season
Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FC Union Berlin meet at the BayArena in Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 Bundesliga, in a match that comes very early in the season but can already show how ready the two teams are after the summer changes. An important practical note for travellers: the current schedules list this match for Saturday, 5 September, with kick-off at 15:30. This differs from the previously stated time of 4 September at 15:00, so anyone travelling should plan according to the newer date and time.
For Bayer 04, this is the first league appearance in front of their own supporters in the new season. Union travel to Leverkusen after opening the league season at home against Eintracht Frankfurt, while Bayer 04 begin the season away at SV Elversberg. At the time this guide was prepared, the results from Matchday 1 did not yet exist, so there is no point in inventing a current league table. Last season provides the starting context: Bayer 04 finished sixth with 59 points, while Union were eleventh with 39.
Tickets for this match are in demand among supporters, especially because it is the first league weekend at the BayArena in the new season.
Bayer 04 enter the season with a new coach and plenty of attacking options
Carles Martínez took over Bayer 04 during the summer and received a contract until 2028. In pre-season, it was immediately clear that he wants a team that controls the ball, builds attacks patiently and has enough pace to finish moves after creating space. That fits a squad featuring Patrik Schick, Nathan Tella, Christian Kofane, Ernest Poku, Afonso Moreira and Victor Boniface in attack, as well as Robert Andrich, Aleix García, Exequiel Palacios, Malik Tillman and Ibrahim Maza in midfield.
The pre-season results were very good. Bayer 04 beat SF Baumberg 7:0, Kickers Offenbach 3:1, KRC Genk 4:0, Rot-Weiss Essen 3:0 and Sevilla FC 2:1. The only defeat in that run came away at Nottingham Forest, 1:2, before the pre-season schedule was completed with a 2:1 victory away at Newcastle United. The first competitive appearance produced an even more convincing result: a 4:0 away win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the cup.
In that victory, Patrik Schick opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, while Lucas Vázquez, Nathan Tella and Christian Kofane scored after the break. It is a good illustration of Leverkusen's depth because the goals did not come from just one source.
Players worth watching
Patrik Schick remains the natural reference point in the penalty area. Against Union's compact defence, his first touch, ability to play with his back to goal and movement when attacking crosses will be particularly important.
Nathan Tella brings pace and directness, and he has already scored in the first competitive match of the season. Christian Kofane also opened his season with a goal. Ibrahim Maza provides additional creativity between the lines, while Lucas Vázquez can be important on the right side thanks to his experience and crossing quality.
In defence, the options include Facundo Medina, Jarell Quansah, Loïc Badé, Edmond Tapsoba, Arthur and Miguel Gutiérrez. Tapsoba was given the captaincy role ahead of the start of the competitive season, further underlining his importance in organising the back line.
Union Berlin begin a new chapter under Mauro Lustrinelli
Union also entered the season with a new coach. Mauro Lustrinelli leads a team that still has a strong core of experienced players. Frederik Rønnow remains an important figure in goal, while defensive options include Marvin Friedrich, Leopold Querfeld, Tom Rothe, Derrick Köhn, Josip Juranovic, Christopher Trimmel, Stanley Nsoki and Zeno Van den Bosch.
The midfield combines Rani Khedira, András Schäfer, Aljoscha Kemlein, Woo-yeong Jeong and Janik Haberer, while Michel Aebischer also arrived shortly before the start of the competitive season. The Swiss midfielder arrives with more than 300 competitive appearances at club and international level. His tactical discipline should help Union remain stable without the ball and provide greater composure with the first pass after regaining possession.
In attack, Andrej Ilić is important because of his aerial ability and presence in the penalty area. The club extended his contract in August, and according to club figures he was directly involved in 25 goals in his first 50 competitive appearances for Union, with 13 goals and 12 assists. Other options include Ilyas Ansah, Livan Burcu, Marin Ljubicic, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Oliver Burke.
The final major test before the competitive season ended in a 2:4 defeat against Ipswich Town. Zeno Van den Bosch put Union ahead, Josip Juranović later reduced the deficit to 2:3, but the English side still finished the match with a fourth goal. Ilyas Ansah was among Union's most direct players and frequently tried to attack the defence with the ball at his feet.
At the time this guide was prepared, Union's first competitive match of the season, an away cup tie against Eintracht Braunschweig, had not yet been played. It is therefore fairer to assess their form through pre-season rather than assigning them in advance a result that has yet to happen.
Tactical duel: Leverkusen's possession against Union's compactness
The most logical scenario is a match in which Bayer 04 have more of the ball. Leverkusen under Martínez are already showing a desire to begin attacks in a controlled manner, with enough players in midfield to retain possession and then accelerate when a gap appears. Against Union, that will probably mean plenty of patience around the penalty area and attempts to create overloads on the flanks.
Union have the profiles for a more compact block and quicker transitions forward. In the final test against Ipswich, they defended for long periods in clearly defined lines and tried to break forward through Ansah, Burcu and the striker. Against Leverkusen, the first two or three passes after winning the ball could be decisive. If Union escape the pressure, they can attack the space left behind Bayer's advanced players.
Set pieces will be particularly interesting. Ilić, Friedrich, Querfeld and Van den Bosch give Union height, while Trimmel and Juranovic have experience delivering crosses. Leverkusen will therefore have to avoid unnecessary fouls in wide areas. At the other end, Schick, Tapsoba, Quansah and Badé represent a threat whenever Bayer 04 win a corner or free kick.
Three tactical questions that could decide the match
- Can Union close the space between their midfield and defensive lines, where Leverkusen have technically strong players?
- Will Bayer 04 switch the point of attack quickly enough before Union's block can reorganise?
- Can Union find Ilić or Ansah after winning the ball before Leverkusen activate their counter-press?
- Who will control the second balls better after long passes and set pieces?
Head-to-head meetings warn Leverkusen that nothing is automatic
The last two league meetings from the previous season presented different pictures of this matchup. In October 2025, Bayer 04 won 2:0 at the BayArena, with goals from Ernest Poku and Christian Kofane. Leverkusen controlled possession for long periods on that occasion and patiently broke down the visitors' deep block.
In February 2026, the story was reversed. Union won 1:0 in Berlin and ended Leverkusen's seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Another important reminder came in April 2025, when the match in Leverkusen finished 0:0 despite the home side's major territorial dominance.
The lesson is clear: dominating possession against Union is not the same as dominating the scoreline. If Bayer 04 fail to turn early pressure into clear chances, the visitors can take the match into a rhythm that suits them better.
Absences and team status
For Bayer 04, it was confirmed in early August that Kennet Eichhorn was temporarily unavailable due to a health problem requiring treatment. Since there is no reliable newer confirmation of the exact date of his return, there should be no speculation about whether he will be ready for Union.
For Union, Andrik Markgraf is out for a longer period following a knee injury and surgery in July. The status of the other players may change before matchday, so travelling supporters should check the latest club information immediately before departure.
BayArena: a compact stadium and practical information
The BayArena has a capacity of up to 30,210 spectators. The stadium is compact and the distance between the stands and the pitch is relatively small, allowing sound to remain well contained inside the stadium. For a match that opens the league season in Leverkusen, that means a very lively atmosphere even during the warm-up.
The stadium opens two hours before kick-off. If the 15:30 kick-off time applies, entry begins at around 13:30. This is useful for visitors who want to avoid the biggest queues at security checks and have enough time to find their section.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly for attractive early-season fixtures, so it is worth securing tickets in good time.
Getting to the BayArena
- The stadium address is Bismarckstr. 122-124, Leverkusen.
- Leverkusen Mitte station is approximately a 20-minute walk from the stadium.
- For those arriving by car, the Kurtekotten car park is recommended, with shuttle buses operating from there to the BayArena.
- Parking at Kurtekotten is available from two hours before kick-off, and the shuttle buses begin operating towards the stadium at that time.
- After the match, shuttle transport back to the car park is scheduled to operate for up to two hours after the end of the match.
Traffic around the BayArena is specially regulated on matchdays because of the residential neighbourhoods in the immediate vicinity. Driving directly to the stadium is therefore not the best strategy. Public transport or a combination of parking at Kurtekotten and using the shuttle bus is usually the simpler solution.
For travellers arriving by train, Leverkusen Mitte is a practical starting point. Leverkusen lies between Köln and Düsseldorf and is well connected by regional rail services. Before departure, however, the status of the lines should be checked because of possible engineering works or temporary timetable changes.
What to expect on matchday
The best plan is to arrive in Leverkusen early rather than immediately before kick-off. The two hours between the stadium opening and the first whistle provide enough time for security checks, finding the entrance and reaching the stand without rushing.
From a sporting perspective, this is a match with more unknowns than the league table might suggest. Both teams have new coaches. Leverkusen have changed part of their squad, Union have added experience in midfield, and Matchday 1 of the league still has to provide the first real indicators of form. It is therefore more important to watch the style of play than the early league positions.
At the time this guide was prepared, Bayer 04 had made a very convincing competitive start after the 4:0 win in Wiesbaden and six victories from seven pre-season matches. Union showed both good transitional moments and defensive problems in their final test against Ipswich. If Leverkusen impose the tempo early, the home side will try to turn possession into sustained pressure. If Union survive the opening phase and remain close on the scoreboard, the match could become tougher and more uncomfortable for the hosts.
It is worth securing tickets in good time and leaving enough room in the travel plan for congestion around the stadium. For a supporter who wants an early snapshot of the new Bundesliga season, this is a match in which two new coaching projects are tested simultaneously, along with Leverkusen's ambition to return to the upper part of the table and Union's ability to impose their own rhythm against a technically stronger opponent.
