FC Köln and TSG Hoffenheim open the new Bundesliga season in Köln
FC Köln and TSG Hoffenheim meet on 29 August 2026 at 15:30 at RheinEnergieSTADION in the first round of the 2026/27 Bundesliga. It is a meeting between two teams entering the new season from very different starting points. Hoffenheim finished the previous campaign in fifth place with 61 points and secured European football, while Köln were 14th with 32 points and ended the season above the relegation play-off and relegation zone.
There is no current table yet - everyone starts from zero. Last season's 29-point difference nevertheless shows the starting position: Köln want to show immediate improvement, while Hoffenheim are trying to confirm a campaign in which they achieved the second-best points total in their Bundesliga history.
- Competition: Bundesliga, 1st round of the 2026/27 season

Köln seek more control under René Wagner
René Wagner has remained FC Köln coach and signed a contract until 2028. His team showed several clear patterns during pre-season. In the 2:0 victory against Real Sociedad San Sebastian, Luca Waldschmidt and Marius Bülter were the scorers, while in the final tests against SC Paderborn, Köln had good first halves in both matches but eventually lost 2:3 and 3:4. After those matches, Wagner particularly highlighted periods of approximately 15 to 20 minutes in which his team lost control and moved away from the agreed principles.
That is an important detail ahead of Hoffenheim. Köln will probably look for enough possession to control the tempo, but without excessive risk in their build-up play. Paderborn showed how quickly a match can move in another direction when Köln lose their structure.
In attack, attention will be drawn to Saïd El Mala, Ragnar Ache, Luca Waldschmidt, Marius Bülter and Linton Maina. El Mala scored the only goal in Köln's 1:0 victory in Sinsheim in October 2025, while Ragnar Ache scored in the 2:2 return draw in Köln. Those are two very concrete threats to the Hoffenheim defence.
The latest clear club information from the end of pre-season listed Sebastian Sebulonsen as the only player outside Wagner's squad because of a thigh muscle injury. The club announced on 9 August that he would be out until further notice, and on 14 August Wagner said that, apart from Sebulonsen, the other players were available to him for the final pre-season matches. His status for Hoffenheim is therefore worth checking again closer to the match.
Hoffenheim arrive as a team from the upper part of last season's table
After finishing fifth with 61 points, Christian Ilzer received a long-term contract extension. That is an important sign of continuity. Hoffenheim are not entering the season with a new coach and a completely new idea, but with a project that already delivered European qualification in 2025/26.
Oliver Baumann remains captain. Wouter Burger and Andrej Kramarić have been named his deputies, which clearly shows where the experience in this team lies. Baumann provides security in goal, Burger is important in midfield, while Kramarić continues to be a player who can change the rhythm of a match between the lines and around the penalty area.
In their last major public test, Hoffenheim lost 0:3 to Tottenham Hotspur on 15 August. Adam Hložek hit the frame of the goal, and the match was open. The following day, the two teams played another closed-door test with different line-ups, which ended 2:2.
In the match in London, Ilzer started with Oliver Baumann, Vladimír Coufal, Ozan Kabak, Albian Hajdari and Bernardo in the back line, while Wouter Burger, Leon Avdullahu and Nathan De Cat were in midfield. In front of them were Adam Hložek, Adam Daghim and Tim Lemperle. That does not guarantee the same line-up in Köln, but it provides a good framework for what Wagner's team will have to defend against: a physically strong central unit, quick forward openings and several players who can attack the space behind the defensive line.
Tim Lemperle adds further context because he is a former Köln player and already played against his former club last season. Tactically, what matters more is that he can occupy the centre-backs and open space for Hložek or players arriving from deeper positions.
The head-to-head record is not as one-sided as last season's table suggests
The Bundesliga records 33 league meetings between Köln and Hoffenheim. Köln have 10 victories, Hoffenheim 14, and two of the last three league meetings between them ended in draws. Particularly important is the fact that Köln did not lose either of last season's two matches against a team that eventually finished as many as nine places higher in the table.
- 3 October 2025: TSG Hoffenheim - 1. FC Köln 0:1
- 2025/26 season, return match in Köln: 1. FC Köln - TSG Hoffenheim 2:2
- 11 February 2024: TSG Hoffenheim - 1. FC Köln 1:1
- 16 September 2023: 1. FC Köln - TSG Hoffenheim 1:3
Hoffenheim have the better overall Bundesliga record, but Köln have caused them problems in recent meetings. In the 1:0 victory in Sinsheim, Hoffenheim had more attempts, but El Mala's goal remained the only one. The return match in Köln ended 2:2.
Where the match could be decided
The first important area will be behind Köln's wide players. Hoffenheim have enough pace and technical quality to punish a poor recovery after losing the ball. If the home side push their full-backs high and lose the ball in midfield at the same time, Hložek, Daghim or Lemperle could get situations in which they attack the defence facing the goal.
The second theme is Köln's ability to beat the visitors' first press without a series of risky passes. Wagner's team wanted possession and control during pre-season, but the two defeats to Paderborn warned just how costly short periods of lost concentration can be. Against Hoffenheim, the reaction after losing the ball will be especially important.
The third duel is on the wings. El Mala has already shown against Hoffenheim that one individual run can decide a match, while Maina contributed with his acceleration to the move for Ache's goal in Paderborn. Köln therefore do not have to dominate possession to create danger.
Hoffenheim, on the other hand, have more experience from high-intensity matches in the previous season. Kramarić does not necessarily have to start to be important. In last season's match in Sinsheim, he came off the bench when Ilzer was looking for a turnaround. Such an option increases the number of scenarios the visitors can use if the match enters the final third with a tight scoreline.
RheinEnergieSTADION: 50,000 places and clear sector rules
RheinEnergieSTADION is located at Aachener Straße 999 in Köln and has a capacity of 50,000 spectators for domestic competitions - 41,825 seated and 8,175 standing places. The configuration is different for international matches, but for a Bundesliga match the domestic capacity is relevant.
The sector division is also important at this stadium. The club states that during home matches spectators cannot move freely between stands through the internal concourse and that ticket entrances must be used according to the corresponding stand. It is therefore useful to check the sector in advance and approach the stadium from the appropriate side, instead of assuming that it will be possible to walk around the entire venue from the inside.
The atmosphere in Köln is not only a matter of capacity. The club speaks of very high demand for home tickets and tens of thousands of members on the waiting list for season tickets. The opening round and an opponent that finished fifth last season further increase interest.
How to get to the stadium and what to know before travelling
For visitors from outside Köln, public transport is a practical starting point, but there is an important special circumstance on 29 August. KVB is carrying out works on lines 1, 7 and 9 from 29 June to 2 September 2026. The RheinEnergieSTADION stop is on line 1, but because of the works it is necessary to check the current traffic arrangements immediately before departure.
During August, for events at the stadium, KVB specifically warned that line 1 from the part of the city east of the Rhine did not have the usual direct connection to the stadium because of the works. Alternatives included connections via the S-Bahn S12 line and changing at Müngersdorf Technologiepark or Weiden West, depending on the direction of travel. Since the works also continue on 29 August, passengers crossing the Rhine should not plan their route according to old habits.
- Public transport: the RheinEnergieSTADION stop is on city line 1, with current changes because of construction works.
- VRS transport: with a ticket for a home match, a separate digital transport document is used for included public transport within the VRS area.
- Parking: the club lists approximately 7,500 parking spaces around the stadium; the car parks open four hours before kick-off for this match and close three hours after the end.
- Bicycles: approximately 3,000 bicycle parking spaces are available around the stadium.
- Entrance: because of the sector division, visitors should arrive at the entrance for the stand stated on the ticket and leave enough time for checks.
For drivers, the listed options include P1 at Militärringstraße/Wendelinstr., P2 at Aachener Straße 1003, P3 at Brauweiler Weg, as well as P6, P7 and P8 at Salzburger Weg. The club recommends arriving early because large attendances regularly create traffic congestion around the stadium. For someone arriving from another city, P+R and continuing by public transport may be simpler than trying to reach the immediate stadium area by car.
Payments at the stadium are cashless. The club lists girocard, debit and credit cards, as well as Apple Pay. It is also sensible to save the digital ticket on the device or in the wallet in advance so that access does not depend on a mobile connection at the moment when a large number of people are approaching the entrances.
Köln as hosts of the first major Saturday test
Line 1 connects the stadium area with important central stops such as Neumarkt and Heumarkt, with current changes because of construction works. The stadium is west of the central part of the city, so public transport is more practical than relying on a longer walk from the centre.
From a football perspective, the home supporters enter the season with realistic reason for caution, but also with concrete positive references against this opponent. Köln took four points out of a possible six from Hoffenheim last season. Hoffenheim, however, arrive as a team that proved a higher level of consistency over 34 rounds and finished the season with 29 more points.
For that reason, the first goal could have a particularly strong influence on the course of the match. If Köln take the lead, the stadium will further increase the pressure on the visitors, while the home side will be able to play from a more compact position similar to the one that suited them in the 1:0 victory in Sinsheim. If Hoffenheim take the lead first, Wagner's team will have to open up more space and Ilzer's quick attackers will then get conditions that suit them better.
Hoffenheim want to confirm that last season's fifth place was not an isolated peak, while Köln want to show that 14th place is not their long-term level. For a supporter going to the stadium, the practical message is simple - arrive early enough, check the public transport changes and have the ticket ready before arriving at the sector.
