Górnik Zabrze - AS Monaco: the final obstacle on the way to the league phase
Górnik Zabrze and AS Monaco meet in Zabrze in the first leg of the final qualifying round of the Conference League. According to the latest information, the match at Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla is scheduled for August 20 at 20:00. This is a change from the previously announced kick-off time of 19:00, so fans planning their journey should take the updated starting time into account.
The stakes are very simple: the winner of the tie will play in the league phase of the Conference League. The return leg is on August 27 at Stade Louis-II, which gives Górnik the opportunity to build an advantage in front of their own supporters before travelling to Monaco.
This will be the first meeting between Górnik and AS Monaco. There are no previous results on which to build an H2H analysis, but several of the two teams' recent matches provide a fairly clear framework of what can be expected.
Górnik enter the match already deep into their competitive rhythm. AS Monaco are only just finishing their preparations for the new season. That difference between a team already playing high-intensity competitive matches and a team still looking for its ideal combinations could be one of the key stories of the first evening in Zabrze.

How Górnik reached the tie with Monaco
Górnik opened their European season against Fenerbahçe. They lost 1:0 in Istanbul and drew 1:1 in Zabrze. The result was not enough to progress, but the home match showed that Michal Gašparík's team can remain competitive against opponents with a greater international reputation.
That was followed by a tie against Ferencváros. Górnik lost the first match 1:0, while in the return leg in Zabrze they took the lead through a Kacper Urbański penalty late in the first half. The hosts were in a position to force extra time for a long period, but in the 82nd minute Michal Sáček unfortunately put the ball into his own net. It finished 1:1.
That result dropped Górnik into the final qualifying round of the Conference League, but the performance against Ferencváros gave Gašparík plenty of material for preparing for Monaco. Górnik created chances, attacked down the flanks and kept their opponents under pressure for long periods of the match. The problem was converting good situations into goals.
The start of the domestic league campaign was also positive. Górnik opened the season with a 2:1 victory against Śląsk Wrocław and then beat Radomiak Radom 3:1 away from home. The match against Korona Kielce was postponed because of European commitments.

It is particularly interesting that Górnik received a tangible contribution from their new attacking players against Radomiak. Peter Federico scored two goals and Kacper Urbański scored one. Both were subsequently selected in the team of the round.
Kacper Urbański and Peter Federico bring a new dimension
Kacper Urbański has quickly become one of the players through whom Górnik can build their attacks. He joined the club this summer and, before the match against Monaco, had already scored against Radomiak and Ferencváros. Both goals came from penalties, but his influence is not limited to taking spot kicks.
Against Ferencváros, he played in midfield alongside players such as Paulo Bernardo and Marvin Dietz, with enough freedom to join the attack in the final third. That structure allows Górnik not to depend exclusively on a traditional centre-forward.
Peter Federico is the second player who very quickly showed why he was brought in. The Dominican Republic international, who came through Real Madrid's youth ranks, joined Górnik during the summer and scored twice against Radomiak. His speed and ability to attack the space behind the defensive line are particularly interesting against Monaco, who had problems during pre-season when opponents moved quickly from defence to attack.
Erik Prekop remains an important reference point at the top of the attack. Against Ferencváros he had several dangerous opportunities before Urbański scored to make it 1:0. Maksym Khlan can provide penetration from the flank, while captain Erik Janža is important both because of his experience and his runs from the left side.
Against Ferencváros, Gašparík did not build the team around a single star. Schulze was in goal, Sáček, Janicki, Josema and Janža formed the defence, while Dietz, Paulo Bernardo, Urbański, Peter Federico, Khlan and Prekop played important roles in midfield and attack. Retaining a similar core against Monaco would not be a surprise.
AS Monaco arrive with plenty of quality, but also open questions
AS Monaco possess individual quality that Górnik can hardly match player for player. Filipe Luís used a broad group of players during pre-season, including Lukáš Hrádecký, Eric Dier, Thilo Kehrer, Mohammed Salisu, Vanderson, Denis Zakaria, Lamine Camara, Aleksandr Golovin, Takumi Minamino, Ansu Fati, Folarin Balogun, Mika Biereth and Matthis Abline.
However, the preparations were not without fluctuations.
Monaco beat Getafe 1:0 using a starting 4-4-2 formation. A few days later they played a much more open match at Anfield. Liverpool took a 2:0 lead, but Golovin, Biereth and Paris Brunner turned the score around for a 3:2 Monaco victory.
Brunner stood out in particular. His winning goal against Liverpool was his fifth of the pre-season period. That gives Filipe Luís another attacking option alongside the more familiar names.
The final rehearsal before Zabrze was less successful. Coventry City beat Monaco 2:0. After the match, Filipe Luís spoke in particular about problems in transition, the opponents' long balls and the ball circulation being too slow when his team tried to attack open space.
Those are details that Górnik will almost certainly try to exploit.

Denis Zakaria joined the preparations later after international duty. He was in the starting line-up against Coventry, and Filipe Luís said after the match that he expected him to be available for Górnik.
Paul Pogba's situation is considerably more uncertain. The midfielder again had problems with his thigh during pre-season, while media reports in recent days have also mentioned talks about his future at the club. For that reason, it is not reasonable at this point to treat him as a certain participant in the match in Zabrze.
Ansu Fati, Golovin and the attackers Górnik must keep under control
Ansu Fati is coming off a season in which he played 30 matches for Monaco and scored 12 goals. After his loan, the club activated the option for him to remain until 2030. When he finds space near the penalty area, his ability to shoot quickly and attack the space between the full-back and centre-back can change a match without long periods of dominance.
Aleksandr Golovin remains one of the team's most creative players. At Anfield, he won and converted the penalty himself with which Monaco began their comeback after falling 2:0 behind.
Mika Biereth also scored against Liverpool, while Matthis Abline arrived this summer as a reinforcement providing depth across the attack. Against Getafe, he immediately earned a place in the starting line-up alongside Biereth.
For Górnik, the problem is therefore not simply how to stop one striker. Monaco can change both their formation and player profiles during the match. Against Sporting, Filipe Luís started in a 4-2-3-1, while against Getafe he used a 4-4-2. He also used a large number of young players during pre-season, so the line-up for Zabrze is not easy to predict.
Where the match could be decided tactically
The most interesting space could be behind Monaco's wide players. Coventry showed how dangerous quick transitions after winning the ball can be against Filipe Luís's team. Monaco also had problems with Liverpool's transitions in the first half at Anfield.
Peter Federico therefore represents a very logical threat. If Górnik can win the ball in midfield and find him quickly before Monaco get organised, the hosts can create situations in which the French defence has to run back towards its own goal.
Another possibility is set pieces. Górnik have players capable of attacking crosses, and a major European match in front of full stands often brings phases in which the home side cannot keep the ball for long periods. Free kicks, corners and other situations in which play temporarily stops then gain additional value.
Monaco, on the other hand, will try to impose the technical quality of their midfield. If Golovin, Zakaria and the other midfielders are given enough time to receive the ball between the lines, Górnik will find it difficult to remain in a low block for all 90 minutes. It will be important to see how well the home side can compress the pitch and force Monaco to attack through the wide areas rather than through the centre.
Filipe Luís has already shown that he has no problem changing the structure. That is why the reactions after the first substitutions will be almost as important as the starting line-ups.
Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla can be a serious home advantage
The stadium in Zabrze has 28,236 seats arranged across two fully covered tiers of stands. The pitch measures 105 x 68 metres.
An even more important figure for this match is the attendance at the previous European evenings. The return leg against Fenerbahçe was watched by 28,499 spectators, while 23,348 people were in the stands against Ferencváros.
That is not merely decoration. Monaco arrive in Zabrze after their pre-season period and immediately enter a knockout match in front of a crowd that has already shown it can almost completely fill the stadium.
Even Filipe Luís, after the match against Coventry, singled out the fact that playing away at Górnik is difficult. His team therefore has to be ready for the opening 15 to 20 minutes, when the hosts will try to raise the intensity with the support of the stands.
Tickets for this match are in high demand among fans. For visitors arriving from other cities or countries, it is sensible to plan to reach Zabrze with enough time to spare.
Getting to the stadium and parking
The stadium is located at Roosevelta 81 in Zabrze. Its location is convenient for arriving by car because the A1 and A4 motorway routes intersect in the wider area, while Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa, an important road connecting much of the Upper Silesian urban area, also runs close to the stadium.

For the previous European match against Ferencváros, the fan zone opened three hours before kick-off. The schedule for Monaco should be checked shortly before the match because the same opening time should not yet automatically be assumed for the new fixture.

Zabrze as a base for visiting supporters
Zabrze is located in the densely connected urban area of Upper Silesia, between the larger transport hubs of the western and central parts of the conurbation. Visitors therefore do not necessarily have to organise their trip as an isolated visit to a single city. Gliwice and Katowice are part of the same wider urban system, while road connections also make it possible to arrive from the direction of the international airports in Katowice, Kraków and Ostrava.
For a supporter coming only for the match, the simplest strategy is to leave enough time between arriving in the Zabrze area and heading towards the stadium. Particularly for an evening European match, the combination of regular city traffic and a large number of spectators can slow down the final part of the journey.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly when Górnik play European matches of this kind, and previous attendance figures show how strong the interest is.
What Górnik must do before the return leg in Monaco
For the hosts, it would be very dangerous to treat the first match as a fixture in which they must create a large advantage at all costs. Monaco have enough speed and individual quality to punish excessive attacking risks.
A much more realistic objective will be to remain compact, force Monaco into mistakes when building attacks and exploit the moments when space opens up for Federico, Khlan or Urbański.
Against Fenerbahçe and Ferencváros, Górnik have already shown that at their own stadium they can play on equal terms for stretches of matches against opponents with greater international experience. What they must now improve is efficiency. Against Ferencváros, the chances they created were not converted into enough goals, and against a team such as Monaco that kind of inefficiency can prove very costly.
Monaco will try to reduce the emotional factor of the match, slow down the hosts' initial surge and use possession to bring their technically strongest players into favourable situations. Górnik will want exactly the opposite: intensity, duels, quick transitions and a match in which the stands remain an active factor.
The return leg at Stade Louis-II comes only one week later. Every goal and every mistake in Zabrze will therefore have a direct impact on the continuation of the tie.
