Derby d'Italia comes to Perth as the highlight of Italian football week

Juventus and Inter meet at Optus Stadium in Burswood on Saturday, 8 August 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 local time in Perth, while the gates open at 17:30. The match is part of the Calcio Italiano programme, which brings AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Palermo to Western Australia between 5 and 11 August.

This is an international pre-season match, not a contest for league points. Nevertheless, the choice of opponents removes much of the usual relaxed atmosphere associated with friendly matches. Juventus defeated Inter 4-3 in Turin in September 2025. Lloyd Kelly, Kenan Yıldız, Khéphren Thuram and Vasilije Adžić scored for the home side. Inter responded with a 3-2 victory in February 2026. Juventus played much of that match with ten men following Pierre Kalulu's dismissal, equalised through Manuel Locatelli in the 83rd minute, but Piotr Zieliński decided the contest in the 90th minute.

A pre-season result does not change the standings, but it provides coaches with important answers. Cristian Chivu can assess whether Inter can maintain championship standards, while Luciano Spalletti receives a serious test of Juventus' defensive structure and ability to play out of pressure. Pre-season form and a schedule affecting the line-ups

Juventus completed their first three summer tests without defeat and without conceding a goal. The match against Basel ended 0-0, Standard Liège were defeated 1-0 and Nice 2-0. Inter opened their preparations with a 2-1 victory against Karlsruher SC. Chivu used a 3-5-2 structure and distributed minutes between experienced first-team players and younger footballers. Andy Diouf scored both goals in stoppage time after the German side had led since the beginning of the second half.

Inter have a more demanding schedule before facing Juventus. The team play Manchester City in Hong Kong on 1 August and AC Milan in Perth on 5 August. The match against Juventus will be their third tour fixture in eight days. Rotations, shared minutes and caution with players who joined preparations later should therefore be expected.

Inter's squad in Australia and the players to watch

For the international tour, Inter announced a group including Alessandro Bastoni, Yann Bisseck, Benjamin Pavard, Carlos Augusto, Federico Dimarco, Nicolò Barella, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Piotr Zieliński, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Petar Sučić, Andy Diouf, Davide Frattesi, Francesco Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny.

The announced list did not include Lautaro Martínez or Marcus Thuram. Chivu explained in Hong Kong that some players were still being awaited after their break following the Club World Cup. The public should therefore expect the starting line-up and the playing time of the best-known names to depend on their physical condition and when they joined the squad.

John Stones signed for Inter after the initial travelling squad was announced and joined the team in Hong Kong. Chivu described him as a reinforcement who brings quality, personality and experience. His possible appearance in Perth will depend on the coaching staff's assessment during the tour.

Inter's wide positions will attract particular attention on the pitch. Dimarco provides width, early deliveries towards the forwards and a shot from outside the penalty area. Barella accelerates the movement of play and attacks space after passing, while Çalhanoğlu can dictate the tempo from a deeper position. Juventus seek better connections between midfield and attack

During preparations, Juventus have shown a structure with three centre-backs, four players across the middle zone and two footballers behind the central striker. The arrangement can change depending on player availability, but the basic idea is clear: the wide players provide width, Locatelli organises the initial phases of attacks and the players between the lines search for space behind Inter's midfielders.

Kenan Yıldız can change the course of a match when he receives the ball on the left and moves towards the centre. Khéphren Thuram provides ball-carrying ability and physical strength, Andrea Cambiaso can play along the touchline or move into central areas, while Locatelli determines the speed at which the team escapes pressure.

Against Inter's formation, Juventus must find an answer to five players positioned across the full width of the pitch. If the wide players drop too deep, the team loses an outlet in transition. If they advance too high without cover, Dimarco and Luis Henrique gain space behind them. The behaviour of the central midfielders will therefore be more important than the name of the formation itself.

Spalletti can also use the match to compare different attacking solutions. Arkadiusz Milik led the attack against Nice, while Fabio Miretti and Edon Zhegrova played behind him. The wider squad also includes Yıldız, Jonathan David and Francisco Conceição, meaning the line-up can change during the match.

The tactical duel will change with numerous substitutions

The biggest difference between a championship match and a pre-season fixture will be the number of substitutions. Coaches can replace entire lines, so the style of the encounter may change completely after the break. The opening stages may bring cautious positioning and workload management, while the closing period could produce more open football with younger players attempting to earn a larger role.

Inter will probably build play through their centre-backs and look for a free midfielder before moving the ball towards the flank. Bastoni can bypass the first line of pressure with progressive passing, after which Dimarco can attack space high on the left. Juventus' response may involve directing play towards one side and making a rapid transition towards the players behind the striker.

It will be important for Juventus to avoid fouls around the penalty area. Çalhanoğlu, Dimarco and Zieliński provide a threat from free kicks and long range. Inter must control the forward runs of Juventus' midfielders from deeper positions. Locatelli and Khéphren Thuram have already scored in the most recent head-to-head matches, showing that the danger does not come only from the central striker.

Optus Stadium, supporters' zones and the atmosphere in Burswood

Optus Stadium has approximately 60,000 seats and is located in Burswood, east of central Perth, beside the Swan River. It is a multi-purpose stadium with oval-shaped stands arranged around the football pitch. Some seats are farther from the playing surface than at compact European stadiums, but the capacity creates a powerful sound effect when the active supporters' zones become involved.

The published seating map separates the active Juventus and Inter supporters into opposite sections of the lower tier. Most of the remainder of the stadium consists of reserved seating, alongside separate hospitality areas and an alcohol-free section. Visitors should check the section, aisle and gate shown on their tickets because the nearest entrance is not always the one that appears closest to the seat on the map.

A mixture of local supporters' groups, the Italian diaspora and visitors from other Australian cities and abroad is expected in Perth. Inter's first appearance in Australia gives their section of the stands additional symbolic significance. Juventus already have organised supporters' clubs and academies in Australia, so black-and-white support will also be visible. It is worth securing tickets in good time, particularly for sections closer to the active supporters' zones.

How to get to the stadium

Public transport is included with the ticket for three hours before and three hours after the match. Passengers must have their ticket with them; anyone collecting it only at the stadium must pay the standard public transport fare for the journey there. It is advisable to save the digital ticket in the phone's wallet before departure so that it is available during transport and at the entrance.

For Juventus - Inter, trains between Perth Station and Perth Stadium will run approximately every four minutes until 18:56. Before the match, direct Mandurah and Yanchep services will operate, while Armadale and Thornlie-Cockburn line trains will stop at Perth Stadium Station. A high frequency of trains has been announced after the match from approximately 21:18.

Buses for stadium events will arrive between 17:00 and 18:50. The Red CAT from central Perth extends its route to Matagarup Bridge, followed by a walk across the bridge. This route is practical for visitors staying in the city centre before the match.

Arriving before the crowds

The gates opening at 17:30 leave ninety minutes before kick-off. Supporters visiting Optus Stadium for the first time should reasonably aim to reach the Burswood area before 18:00. This leaves enough time to locate the entrance, pass through security checks, verify the section and move around the stadium's large concourse ring.

The ticket should be saved on the phone in advance, and the section, aisle and gate details should be checked. Visitors arriving from central Perth should expect crowds at stations and on Matagarup Bridge, even with additional transport services. After the match, passenger movement will be directed towards the railway and bus stations and across the bridge, so it is useful to choose the return route before kick-off.

For travellers staying in Perth for several days, the match can be combined with other events during Italian football week. Training schedules, public events and any changes to the timetable should be checked shortly before arrival. Seats in the stands offer the greatest value when transport, entry and the return journey have been arranged before the evening crowds begin.
