Mjällby AIF - FC Red Bull Salzburg: Strandvallen ahead of the biggest European test of the season
Mjällby AIF welcomes FC Red Bull Salzburg in the first leg of the final Europa League qualifying tie. The match will be played at Strandvallen in Hällevik, in the municipality of Sölvesborg, and the home club's current announcement lists kick-off at 18:00 local time. This is an important practical note for travellers because a different time had appeared in earlier schedules.
For Mjällby, this is a continuation of a historic European season and an opportunity for a quick response after elimination by ŠK Slovan Bratislava. Salzburg arrives with a different rhythm: it advanced past Pafos after a dramatic second leg and then defeated WSG Tirol 3-0 in the domestic league.
The stakes are very clear. The winner of the two-legged tie enters the league phase of the Europa League, while the loser continues the season in the league phase of the Conference League. The return leg is scheduled for 27 August in Salzburg. Because of the limited space at Strandvallen and the importance of the match, it is worth securing tickets in good time.
Mjällby seeks stability after a turbulent August
Karlo Marius Aksum's team enters the match after a challenging period in terms of results. Mjällby lost both matches against Slovan in the previous European round, 1-2 at home and 0-2 in Bratislava. The 1-4 aggregate result ended the path towards the Champions League, but the club was immediately redirected to this tie with Salzburg.
In the first match against Slovan, Mjällby's only goal was scored by Elliot Stroud from the penalty spot. Stroud moved to Hull City AFC a few days later. In the meantime, Abdoulie Manneh went on loan to Cercle Brugge KSV, while on 16 August 19-year-old attacker Villum Dalsgaard arrived from FC Nordsjælland. Aksum is therefore changing part of the attacking structure in the middle of the most important part of the summer.
After the matches of round 17, Mjällby is 11th in the domestic standings with 20 points from 16 appearances. The latest league match nevertheless provided a major boost: league leaders IK Sirius were beaten 4-3 at Strandvallen. That result does not erase the problems from previous weeks, but it shows that the team can still create chances against opponents in good form.
- Mjällby AIF 4-3 IK Sirius - victory against the leading team in the domestic championship.
- ŠK Slovan Bratislava 2-0 Mjällby AIF - elimination 4-1 on aggregate.
- Mjällby AIF 0-1 IF Elfsborg - home league defeat between European commitments.
- Mjällby AIF 1-2 ŠK Slovan Bratislava - defeat in the first match of the previous European round.
- Lincoln Red Imps FC 0-0 Mjällby AIF - earlier goalless European draw.
The main issue for the home side will be controlling space after losing the ball. Mjällby can be dangerous when the wide players push high, but against Salzburg every mistake in midfield opens space for a quick attack.
Players on whom Mjällby is building its plan
Captain Jesper Gustavsson remains a key figure in midfield alongside Viktor Gustafson. In the latest European second leg, Aksum started with Robin Wallinder in goal, three centre-backs Abdullah Iqbal, Ludvig Svanberg and Tom Pettersson, with Villiam Granath and Ian Hoffman in wide roles. Ahead of them were Jeppe Kjær, Jacob Bergström and Áki Samuelsen.
That line-up confirms a structure with three players in the back line and wide players who can turn defence into attack down the flanks. Against Salzburg, Samuelsen's ability to receive the ball between the lines and Bergström's play with his back to goal will be particularly important. If the home side cannot retain the first or second ball, the visitors will get too much space for transitions.
FotMob lists Timo Stavitski as unavailable ahead of the match because of a back injury. That further narrows the options on the flanks following Stroud's departure.
Salzburg arrives unbeaten and with more attacking options
Salzburg opened the season under Danny Röhl unbeaten in its first three league matches. After a 1-0 victory against Hartberg and a 1-1 draw away to Wolfsberger AC, the team won 3-0 away at WSG Tirol on 16 August. After three rounds, it has seven points and sits third in the Austrian league.
Even more important is the way Salzburg progressed past Pafos. In the second leg in Cyprus, the visitors trailed 0-2 at half-time before Haris Tabaković scored three times between the 54th and 70th minutes. It finished 3-3, enough for a 4-3 aggregate victory and progression. Salzburg therefore arrives with proof that it can change a match in a very short period.
Tabaković is the most obvious finishing threat, but he is not the only one. Karim Konaté scored the winner against Hartberg and opened the scoring against WSG Tirol. Frans Krätzig scored two minutes after him in Innsbruck, while Sota Kitano made it 3-0. Yorbe Vertessen, Edmund Baidoo, Damir Redzic and Abubakr Barry give Röhl's team additional speed and depth.
- WSG Tirol 0-3 FC Red Bull Salzburg - Konaté, Krätzig and Kitano the scorers.
- Pafos FC 3-3 FC Red Bull Salzburg - Tabaković hat-trick and progression 4-3 on aggregate.
- Wolfsberger AC 1-1 FC Red Bull Salzburg - first dropped league points of the season.
- FC Red Bull Salzburg 1-0 Pafos FC - advantage from the first leg of the previous round.
- FC Red Bull Salzburg 1-0 TSV Hartberg - Konaté decided the league opener late on.
Salzburg played in a 4-2-3-1 formation against WSG Tirol. Barry and Maurits Kjærgaard held the centre, while Baidoo, Konaté and Redzic played behind the most advanced Vertessen. Röhl has enough depth for rotation: only five players from the starting line-up in Cyprus started again in Innsbruck.
Absences and Salzburg squad status
Salzburg's report after the match against Pafos stated that Johannes Moser was unavailable because of an adductor problem, Enrique Aguilar because of a forearm injury, and Soumaïla Diabaté and Gaoussou Diakité because of thigh injuries. Anrie Chase, Stefan Lainer and Justin Omoregie were already taking part in portions of team training at the time, but were still not ready to play in Cyprus.
In the victory against WSG Tirol, Leandro Morgalla had to leave the pitch as early as the 22nd minute because of a knee problem. His status for Strandvallen therefore needs to be monitored until the final squad is announced.
Tactical battle: Mjällby's width against Salzburg's pressing
The most interesting part of the match could be Mjällby's first pass after winning the ball. Aksum's team uses three centre-backs as the starting platform and stretches the pitch through high wide players. If Salzburg closes the passing lane towards the central midfielders, the home side will more often have to play longer towards Bergström.
Mjällby must then quickly win the second ball and involve Samuelsen and Kjær. Too many short passes near their own penalty area carry risk because Salzburg has players who can immediately attack the open space. On the other hand, constantly bypassing midfield could gift the visitors too much possession.
Salzburg will look for quick switches and runs from deeper positions. Krätzig was important against WSG Tirol both as a provider and a scorer, while Barry can win the ball high up the pitch and immediately move it towards the back line. Mjällby therefore cannot allow both flanks to remain high at the same time without cover.
Set pieces are one of the home side's opportunities. Mjällby has height through Pettersson, Svanberg and Bergström, so every free kick or corner can take the match into an area where the difference in speed matters less. Salzburg has enough physically strong players to respond, but at the start of the season it has nevertheless allowed opponents chances even in matches it controlled.
Strandvallen: a small stadium that changes the feel of the match
Strandvallen is a stadium of a completely different profile from the large arenas Salzburg is used to. Mjällby AIF lists a capacity of 6,000 spectators for home matches, and the ground is located by Campingvägen in Hällevik, on the coast of southern Sweden. The stands are close to the pitch, the area around the stadium is compact, and larger numbers of visitors quickly put pressure on local roads and parking areas.
For European matches, the available number of places may be lower than the nominal capacity because of seating configuration and safety requirements. As a result, the crowd is also concentrated in a relatively small space. Places in the stands sell out quickly.
Hällevik is a small coastal village, while Sölvesborg is the main transport hub for arrivals by train and bus. During the 2026 season, Blekingetrafiken increased bus connections between Sölvesborgs resecentrum and Strandvallen around home match times. Travellers arriving by train are advised to plan a transfer in Sölvesborg and check the current timetable for the day of the match.
- Arena: Strandvallen, Campingvägen 44, Hällevik area in the municipality of Sölvesborg.
- Nominal capacity for home matches: 6,000 spectators.
- Public transport: additional bus connections from Sölvesborgs resecentrum are introduced for some home matches.
- Car: the club uses parking areas along Campingvägen; temporary signs and steward instructions should be followed.
- Arrival: for recent home matches the club recommended arriving at least 45 minutes before kick-off.
For the European match against Slovan on 4 August, all entrances opened 90 minutes before kick-off. For the match against Salzburg, the exact entrance-opening schedule still needs to be confirmed through the current information for matchday, so it is not advisable to automatically assume the same arrangements. Visitors should allow time for a security check and use the entrance indicated on their ticket.
What to expect in the stands and around the stadium
Over the past year, Mjällby has gone from a national title to its first European matches at its own stadium. Because of Hällevik's size, every such evening has a strong local character, but Salzburg also attracts travellers from outside Sweden.
For the home supporters, the opening phase will be crucial. Salzburg has shown in its last two appearances how quickly it can change a result: three Tabaković goals between the 54th and 70th minutes in Cyprus and two quick goals against WSG Tirol. If Mjällby withstands the first wave of pressure and turns the match into a series of duels, set pieces and second balls, Strandvallen can become a very uncomfortable stage for the visitors.
Salzburg will try to quiet the stands through control of the ball, force Mjällby to run towards its own goal and isolate the home side's wide players in defensive situations. Röhl's team has more fresh options from the bench and plays the return leg at home, so it does not necessarily need to force an open match from the first minute.
Ticket sales for this match are ongoing. For visitors travelling from outside the Sölvesborg area, the most important things are to coordinate their arrival with the current kick-off time listed by the home club as 18:00, leave enough time for the final part of the journey towards Hällevik and not rely on arriving immediately before kick-off.
