Olympique Lyonnais - Fenerbahçe: a second leg in which one move can change the entire season
Olympique Lyonnais and Fenerbahçe enter the second leg of the Champions League play-off without an aggregate advantage after a 1-1 draw in Istanbul. Lyon took the lead through Loïs Openda, Fenerbahçe responded with a Mason Greenwood goal immediately after the break, and both teams hit the woodwork before the end. So Lyon brings no advantage home, only a clear message - the next 90 minutes, and more if necessary, will decide who advances to the league phase.
For the hosts, the stakes are a return to the biggest club stage after their last appearance in the 2019/20 season. For Fenerbahçe, qualification would end an even longer wait to return to the main stage of the competition. The result of the first match has effectively erased all calculations.
Tickets for this match have been in high demand among supporters. Groupama Stadium will be the place where the entire tie is decided, and Lyon's home advantage gives them familiar surroundings, but no margin for error on the scoreboard.
What the first match revealed about the balance of power
Lyon showed in Istanbul that they can withstand away pressure while creating enough danger to prevent Fenerbahçe from relying solely on territorial dominance. Openda took advantage of Corentin Tolisso's cross in the 40th minute and put the visitors ahead. Fenerbahçe responded as early as the 47th minute, when Greenwood moved inside from the right and scored to make it 1-1.
Both teams finished with 12 shots and five attempts on target. Lyon had a slightly higher expected goals figure, while Fenerbahçe had slightly more possession and more touches in the opposition penalty area. Openda hit the post after the equaliser, while Dorgeles Nene struck the woodwork at the other end.
That is important context for the second leg. Lyon did not have to defend deep all evening to earn a 1-1 draw, while Fenerbahçe showed that they can create pressure through individual quality. The first goal in Lyon could therefore significantly change the rhythm.
The road to the decisive evening
Lyon had to get past Sparta Praha to reach the play-off. After a 2-1 away defeat, Paulo Fonseca's team responded with a 3-0 victory at Groupama Stadium. The current team has already entered a home second leg under scoreboard pressure once this summer and responded with a convincing performance.
Fenerbahçe began qualifying earlier. Against Górnik Zabrze, they recorded a 1-0 home victory and a 1-1 draw in Poland, then defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 in Istanbul and 1-0 away. Before the first match against Lyon, they suffered a 2-1 home league defeat to Gençlerbirliği.
- Lyon: 2-1 defeat away to Sparta Praha, followed by a 3-0 victory in the second leg.
- Fenerbahçe: 2-1 on aggregate against Górnik Zabrze.
- Fenerbahçe: 3-0 on aggregate against Sturm Graz.
- First match Fenerbahçe - Lyon: 1-1, goals by Greenwood and Openda.
- The second leg is played at Groupama Stadium, so neither team has an aggregate advantage.
Openda, Tolisso and Morton give Lyon a clear attacking axis
Loïs Openda already showed in the first match why the Fenerbahçe defence will pay particular attention to the space behind the last line. His goal in Istanbul came after a well-timed run in front of the defender, while his later shot against the post showed that he remains a threat even when the attack is not fully developed.
Corentin Tolisso is important because he connects midfield with the penalty area. His cross for Openda's goal was an example of a situation Lyon can look for again: gaining space on the right, delivering a quality ball behind the defensive line and having a striker attack the zone between the centre-back and full-back.
Tyler Morton helps Lyon play through pressure and find vertical passes. At home, that will be important because Fonseca's team will not want simply to wait for transitions. Ernes Nuamah and Malick Fofana can also stretch the pitch and attack one-on-one, especially if Fenerbahçe push their wide defenders forward.
Greenwood is the biggest warning, but Fenerbahçe have multiple sources of danger
Mason Greenwood decided the first match with an individual move. He received the ball on the right, moved inside and found the opposite top corner. Lyon therefore cannot defend only the space in behind. If Greenwood is given room to move inside onto his left foot, he can finish an attack even without a major chance having been created beforehand.
Fenerbahçe have Ederson, N'Golo Kanté, Marco Asensio and Nathan Aké in their squad. In attack, they have Greenwood, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Anderson Talisca and Dorgeles Nene, while Romelu Lukaku came off the bench in the first match after previously missing the league defeat to Gençlerbirliği.
İsmail Kartal therefore has several ways to attack. Talisca scored against Sturm in the previous round, Asensio can create an overload between the lines and from set pieces, while Greenwood has shown that he does not need much space to get a shot away. Kanté and Matteo Guendouzi provide energy in midfield, so Lyon cannot assume that possession alone will eliminate the visitors' threat in transition.
Where the second leg could be decided
The most important tactical question for Lyon will be how high to press without opening up space for Greenwood and the other quick players. Fenerbahçe, on the other hand, must find a balance between attacking quality and protecting the space behind their wide defenders.
- Lyon will look for Openda's speed in behind the defence and Tolisso's runs from deep.
- Fenerbahçe must prevent Morton from switching the point of attack calmly.
- Greenwood's movement from the right toward the centre remains one of the most dangerous situations.
- Set pieces could be important because both teams have quality takers.
- An early goal could completely change the level of risk in the match.
The final lists of absentees for the second leg have not yet been announced. Endrick missed Lyon's second leg against Sparta Praha, while Lukaku was fit enough to come off the bench in Istanbul. Players' fitness should therefore be monitored closer to the match rather than relying on earlier assessments.
Head-to-head meetings: Lyon have a historically strong run
Lyon beat Fenerbahçe four times in a row in the early 2000s: 1-0 in Istanbul in 2001, 3-1 in Lyon later that year, then 3-1 in Istanbul in 2004 and 4-2 in Lyon. More recent meetings have been much tighter. It was 0-0 in Istanbul in January 2025, while the first match of the current play-off ended 1-1.
- Fenerbahçe 0-1 Lyon - 2001.
- Lyon 3-1 Fenerbahçe - 2001.
- Fenerbahçe 1-3 Lyon - 2004.
- Lyon 4-2 Fenerbahçe - 2004.
- Fenerbahçe 0-0 Lyon - 2025.
- Fenerbahçe 1-1 Lyon - first match of the current play-off.
History gives Lyon a favourable statistical picture, but the Fenerbahçe of 2026 have a completely different squad. Names such as Greenwood, Asensio, Kanté, Aké and Ederson say enough about the level of experience arriving in Décines-Charpieu.
Groupama Stadium and getting to the match
Groupama Stadium is located in Décines-Charpieu, east of central Lyon, at 10 Avenue Simone Veil. The stadium opened in January 2016 and holds approximately 59,000 spectators for football matches. Lyon already beat Sparta 3-0 at this ground in the previous round after losing away.
Seats in the stands are disappearing quickly. Supporters planning to attend should also organise transport in advance, because traffic arrangements around the stadium on matchdays differ from everyday conditions.
How to get there and what to plan in advance
OL Vallée organises a special transport scheme on matchdays. For a large number of visitors, the simplest option is public transport, especially from the direction of the main Part-Dieu railway station and the Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie transport hub.
- Direct shuttle tram services usually depart from Part-Dieu Villette Sud and Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie.
- Regular T7 services stop at Décines OL Vallée, immediately next to the complex, while T3 stops at Décines Grand Large, around 800 metres from the stadium.
- When arriving by car, a parking space should be reserved in advance because car parks are often full before the event begins.
- The Meyzieu les Panettes and Eurexpo park-and-ride locations are connected by special transport when that arrangement is activated.
- The exact transport timetable and gate opening times for this match should be checked closer to matchday because they are published separately for each event.
The general rule for stadium car parks is that barriers open around two and a half hours before the start of the event, while special shuttle services usually begin operating around two hours and 15 minutes before the match. This is not the same as a confirmed stadium gate opening time, so that detail should not be assumed in advance.
The stadium is not in Lyon's historic centre, but in Décines-Charpieu. The tram connection makes it possible to spend most of the day in the city and then travel toward the stadium by public transport without having to drive through the heaviest traffic around the complex.
Atmosphere and the final things worth monitoring
Fenerbahçe had strong support in Istanbul during the first match, and Lyon now get their home setting. Groupama Stadium is a modern venue with stands close to the pitch, so the pressure from the crowd is particularly noticeable when the home side string together several attacks or win the ball high up the pitch.
For Lyon, it is important that the match does not become emotionally chaotic. Fenerbahçe have enough experienced players to exploit an open pitch, so the hosts will try to combine the energy of the stands with control of the tempo, especially after losing possession.
It is worth securing tickets in good time. A second leg like this has no reserve match behind it: the winner of the tie advances, while the loser misses out on a place in the league phase.
Players' fitness, starting line-ups and details of the transport arrangements can still change before the match. Lyon also have a league commitment in Toulouse in the meantime, so Fonseca will have to judge how much he can rotate the team without losing competitive rhythm before Fenerbahçe.
The most important indicator remains the first match. Lyon showed that they can attack through Openda and the wide players, but also that Greenwood cannot be given room to shoot after moving inside. Fenerbahçe showed the depth of their squad, but did not impose enough dominance to take an advantage to Lyon.
For a supporter in the stadium, the scenario is simple: the score is open, both teams have enough attacking quality to score from a single situation and there is no safe way to simply "manage" the match. That is exactly why the tempo could increase as the closing stages approach, especially if the score remains level.
