Rapid Vienna vs Sturm Graz: guide to an early clash between top teams
Rapid Vienna and Sturm Graz meet at Allianz Stadion in the 5th round of the Austrian Bundesliga, and the early table already gives the match additional weight. As of August 23, Rapid are top after three league appearances, with three wins and a goal difference of 11:1. Sturm have played one match more, remain unbeaten and have collected eight points, one fewer than Rapid and LASK. Rapid's 4th-round match against Salzburg was postponed because of European commitments, so the number of matches played is not the same.
Rapid sent their loudest message in their most recent league appearance. GAK were beaten 8:0 at Allianz Stadion, Tonni Adamsen scored four goals, Ercan Kara two, while Nenad Cvetković and Yusuf Demir also found the net. It was Rapid's eighth consecutive winning appearance in all competitions at the start of the season, before the run ended with a 2:2 draw away to Heart of Midlothian in the European play-offs.
Sturm arrive with a different rhythm. The team coached by Fabio Ingolitsch have two wins and two draws from their first four league rounds. A 1:1 draw against WSG Tirol was followed by a 2:0 win away at Hartberg, a 1:0 win against SCR Altach and a 1:1 draw against Austria Lustenau. The latest draw also revealed a problem: Sturm conceded early and only equalised in the second half, with Seedy Jatta scoring from the penalty spot.
Tickets for this match are already on general sale, and interest is further increased by the fact that two teams unbeaten in the league are meeting.
What is at stake for both sides
Although the season has only just begun, a direct clash between top competitors can quickly change the tone of the first part of the championship. Rapid have a maximum nine points after three rounds, with 11 goals scored and only one conceded. A win against Sturm would be important confirmation that the strong start is not merely the consequence of one exceptional day against GAK.
Sturm entered the season as the reigning runners-up. They have not yet lost in the league, but two draws mean there is not much room for another setback if they want to stay with the leaders. The draw against Austria Lustenau prevented a temporary jump into first place, so the trip to Hütteldorf comes as the first opportunity to take points directly from one of their rivals at the top.
Early league picture:
- Rapid Vienna: three matches, three wins, nine points and a goal difference of 11:1.
- Sturm Graz: four matches, two wins, two draws and eight points.
- Rapid beat GAK 8:0 in their most recent league appearance.
- Sturm drew 1:1 against Austria Lustenau in their most recent league appearance.
The schedule could also be important. Rapid's match against Salzburg has been moved to September 2, but the team still have the return leg against Heart of Midlothian before facing Sturm. After completing their qualifying campaign for the highest European club tier, Sturm do not have the same midweek pressure immediately before the away match. Coach Johannes Hoff Thorup will therefore have to manage minutes and recovery carefully.
Rapid's attacking depth
The 8:0 result against GAK attracts attention, but more important is how many different solutions Rapid showed. Kara scored twice in the opening phase, Adamsen four times, while Demir and Petter Nosa Dahl provided additional creativity around the central striker. Captain Matthias Seidl connects midfield with the final third, while Romeo Amané provides balance behind the attacking line.
Tonni Adamsen is currently the league's leading scorer with four goals. Against GAK, Ercan Kara showed how severely Rapid can punish an opponent when they find space in the penalty area early. Alongside Yusuf Demir, Petter Nosa Dahl and Nikolaus Wurmbrand, the home side have several different profiles capable of changing the tempo.
Against Sturm, it will be more difficult to repeat the same attacking wave. The visitors have conceded only two goals in four league rounds. Rapid will therefore probably need more patient build-up play, quicker switches of play and good off-the-ball movement around Ercan Kara and Tonni Adamsen.
The European return leg a few days before the league match remains a major unknown. If it is physically demanding, bench depth could become just as important as the starting line-up.
Sturm have more ways to finish attacks
Sturm have not been as efficient as Rapid in their first four rounds, but they have shown attacking depth. Nelson Weiper scored both goals as a substitute in the 2:0 win away at Hartberg. Seedy Jatta then scored the only goal against Altach and equalised against Austria Lustenau. Szymon Włodarczyk scored in the season opener against WSG Tirol.
Against Lustenau, Ingolitsch started with Seedy Jatta and Szymon Włodarczyk instead of Axel Kayombo and Nelson Weiper. That is an important signal for Rapid: Sturm are not tied to one attacking partnership and can change the physical profile and depth of their attack during a match.
Simon Seidl also deserves attention. According to current FotMob data, he leads the league in big chances created with five. That could be particularly important in a match in which Sturm may not enjoy long periods of possession but will look for quick solutions after winning the ball.
Sturm have also gone through demanding European qualifiers this summer. After two defeats to Fenerbahçe, 0:3 on aggregate, they secured continuation of their European season in the second continental tier. The team therefore already have experience of high-intensity matches against opponents who quickly punish lost possession.
Player availability is not yet final
Injury lists a week before the match are not final line-ups. In its current preview of this fixture, FotMob listed Dominic Vincze, Martin Ndzie, Daniel Nunoo, Claudy Mbuyi and Andrija Radulović among Rapid's injured or unavailable players. For Sturm, Otar Kiteishvili, Leon Grgić and Filip Rózga were listed.
There is also a more recent concrete update for Sturm: goalkeeper Daniil Chudjakow missed the match against Austria Lustenau because of a back problem, so Ammar Helac made his debut in goal. His status for Vienna should be monitored until the final training sessions.
The most important question among those names concerns the status of Otar Kiteishvili. If he is not fit, Sturm lose a player who can receive the ball between the lines and link the attack. If he returns, Rapid's midfield will have to close the space in front of the centre-backs much more carefully.
The latest head-to-head meetings are completely split
Last season offered a clear pattern: Rapid won the first two league meetings 2:1, while Sturm responded with two 2:0 victories in the spring part of the season. For that reason, there is no simple story of a clear favourite. Both teams have very recent proof that they can impose their plan.
Last four league meetings:
- Sturm Graz - Rapid Vienna 1:2, regular season 2025/2026.
- Rapid Vienna - Sturm Graz 2:1, regular season 2025/2026.
- Rapid Vienna - Sturm Graz 0:2, championship group in April 2026.
- Sturm Graz - Rapid Vienna 2:0, final round of the championship group in May 2026.
In the most recent head-to-head meeting, Sturm won 2:0 in Graz with goals from Gizo Mamageishvili and Stefan Hierländer. Rapid had more possession and shots but did not score. That is a useful warning for the home side: against Sturm, territorial control means little without precision in the final third and good protection after losing the ball.
Tactical battle in Hütteldorf
Rapid's ideal scenario is to raise the tempo early, win the ball back quickly after losing it and look for Adamsen, Demir or Dahl between and alongside Sturm's lines. Against GAK, such a start practically decided the match in its opening phase. Against Sturm, the home side will get less time and space.
The visitors can accept periods without the ball if they close the centre and force Rapid into slower attacks down the flanks. Jatta, Weiper and Włodarczyk offer different types of finishing, so Sturm have a good tool for transitions and for changing the match from the bench.
Set pieces will also be important. Rapid got a goal from centre-back Nenad Cvetković against GAK, while Sturm have enough physical strength to make every corner or free kick a serious test. In a clash between teams that know each other well, one set piece can be more valuable than long periods of possession.
Allianz Stadion and the atmosphere
Allianz Stadion is located at Gerhard-Hanappi-Platz 1 in the western part of Vienna, on the site of the former Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadion. It opened in 2016, and the club's current website lists a capacity of 26,000 spectators. Rapid had 16,795 spectators against Altach and 17,651 against GAK in their first two home league appearances this season.
The clash with Sturm has an even stronger profile. The visitors are the runners-up, both teams are unbeaten in the league, and the last four head-to-head meetings ended with two wins for each side. A very loud stadium can therefore be expected, especially if the score remains open until the closing stages.
It is worth securing tickets in good time. General sale opened on August 19, and the stadium entrances open at 15:30 on matchday, an hour and a half before kick-off.
How to get there and what to plan before the match
For visitors from other parts of Vienna or from outside the city, public transport is the simplest option. The club recommends arriving early because traffic around the stadium can be slower for major matches and parking is limited.
Practical information:
- U-Bahn line U4 runs to the Hütteldorf terminus, from where the stadium can be reached on foot.
- S-Bahn, regional and intercity trains also stop at Hütteldorf station.
- Tram line 49 stops at Deutschordenstraße near the stadium.
- Park & Ride Hütteldorf also operates on matchdays, but the number of spaces is limited and early arrival is recommended.
- The SK Rapid garage next to the stadium is already full, while bicycle parking spaces are available beside the stadium.
For the match starting at 17:00, the entrances open at 15:30. That leaves enough time for security checks and finding the correct section without rushing. If arriving by car, combining the Park & Ride option with continuing on the U4 line reduces the risk of searching for a space immediately next to the stadium.
Ticket sales for this match are ongoing. For a supporter travelling to Vienna, the most important thing is to plan an earlier arrival and expect heavier traffic in Hütteldorf.
Details that could decide the match
Rapid enter the clash with the best possible league start, leading scorer Tonni Adamsen and an 8:0 home win in their most recent league appearance. Sturm arrive unbeaten, more rested in the week before the match and with two consecutive victories over Rapid from the end of last season.
For the home side, the key will be how much energy remains after the European return leg and whether they can impose the tempo early. For Sturm, it will be important to survive the opening pressure, close the space in front of the penalty area and exploit their attacking depth in the second part of the match.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly for top-of-the-table clashes like this, and for visitors the most practical option is to arrive earlier and use public transport.
