SC Austria Lustenau - WSG Tirol: western duel with important points at stake
SC Austria Lustenau and WSG Tirol meet on Friday, 28 August 2026 at 19:30 at the SUN MINIMEAL Arena in Lustenau, in the 5th round of the Austrian Bundesliga. Although the season has only just begun, the first results are already creating very different contexts for the two teams. Returning side SC Austria Lustenau are in the upper half of the table after three rounds, while WSG Tirol are still searching for their first league victory.
Lustenau collected four points from their first three rounds with a goal difference of 4:4. Markus Mader's team opened the season with a 1:1 home draw against SV Oberbank Ried, then lost 2:1 away to Grazer AK 1902, before claiming their first full haul at the SUN MINIMEAL Arena with a 2:1 victory over RZ Pellets WAC.
WSG Tirol have one point and a goal difference of 2:7. Philipp Semlic's team began with a 1:1 draw against SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz, then lost 3:1 away to SCR Altach, before suffering a 0:3 home defeat to FC Red Bull Salzburg in the third round.
That gives the match a very clear opening storyline: the hosts are trying to confirm that they can establish themselves among the top-flight clubs, while the visitors need points to prevent the lower part of the table from beginning to drift away too early. It is worth securing tickets in good time, especially because the match is played in a compact stadium with a capacity of just over five thousand spectators.
League table situation and form before the fifth round
According to the standings after three completed rounds, SC Austria Lustenau are fifth with four points, while WSG Tirol are eleventh with one point. Only a few positions separate them, but the results so far show a significantly different dynamic.
- SC Austria Lustenau: 3 matches, 1 win, 1 draw, 1 defeat, goal difference 4:4, 4 points.
- WSG Tirol: 3 matches, 0 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats, goal difference 2:7, 1 point.
- Lustenau have collected four points from two home league appearances: 1:1 against SV Oberbank Ried and 2:1 against RZ Pellets WAC.
- After opening with a 1:1 draw against Sturm Graz, WSG lost 3:1 to SCR Altach and 0:3 to FC Red Bull Salzburg.
- Before the head-to-head meeting, Lustenau visit Sturm Graz on 22 August, while WSG's match against FK Austria Wien has been moved to 2 September.
That final point is not insignificant. After the victory over WAC, Lustenau will have another competitive test before facing WSG. The Tyroleans, on the other hand, have no league match between the defeat to Salzburg and the trip to Lustenau. Semlic therefore gets additional time to work on the problems that were clearly visible in the first three rounds.
For the hosts, the away match at Sturm Graz is also an important test. The result of that game may change their position in the table before Friday in Lustenau, so the current fifth place should be viewed as the situation as of 20 August rather than the final position from which the team will welcome WSG.
SC Austria Lustenau: Verinac has delivered what was missing
The best moment of Lustenau's start to the season came against WAC. After the draw with Ried and the defeat in Graz, Markus Mader's team won their second home league test 2:1, with Antonio Verinac scoring both goals.
He scored the first in the 24th minute after a move in which Dominik Weixelbraun found him, and eight minutes later he was in the right place after Seydou Diarra's shot hit the frame of the goal. It was a match in which Lustenau did not merely defend their lead. Fabian Gmeiner hit the frame of the goal, Dion Kacuri threatened with a volley, Lord Afrifa on the counterattack, and Verinac also had a chance to complete a hat-trick.
That is an important improvement after the match away to Grazer AK 1902. In Graz, Lustenau equalised through Dion Kacuri in the 51st minute, but the hosts won 2:1. Markus Mader stressed at the time that his team had not been dangerous enough going forward. Against WAC, the response was far more convincing.
Home players worth watching
Antonio Verinac immediately established himself as an important option in the final third. The striker, who joined Lustenau on loan from FC St. Gallen, showed with two goals against WAC how much he can offer when the team manages to play the ball in behind the opposition's defensive line.
Dominik Weixelbraun has already scored against Ried, and against WAC he was involved in creating the first goal. His movement between the wide and central areas gives Mader the option of attacking quickly as soon as Lustenau win the ball.
Dion Kacuri provides progression from midfield. His goal against GAK came with a shot from outside the penalty area, and against WAC he was again among the players who most frequently drove moves forward.
Lord Afrifa and Seydou Diarra give the hosts pace. Their attacks into space could be particularly important against WSG if the visitors push higher and leave space behind the last line.
Markus Mader made three changes to the starting line-up against WAC compared with the previous round. Emmanuel Chukwu, Albin Gashi and Antonio Verinac came into the starting eleven in place of Matthias Maak, Sacha Delaye and Precious Benjamin. The result was one of Lustenau's best performances at the start of their return season in the top flight.
WSG Tirol: the result against Salzburg also hides missed chances
Looking only at WSG's last two results leaves a difficult impression: 1:3 in Altach and 0:3 against Salzburg. However, the most recent match in particular provides a somewhat more complex picture.
WSG created a series of very good situations against Salzburg during the first half. Murat Satin and David Kubatta threatened early on, Lukas Hinterseer hit the post, Michael Olakigbe failed to make the most of a situation in front of goal, and before the break Hinterseer also had a penalty that he failed to convert. Marc Striednig was unable to finish the continuation of that move either.
Salzburg, on the other hand, punished mistakes and took the lead with goals in the 15th and 17th minutes, before adding a third in the second half.
That suggests WSG's main problem ahead of the trip to Lustenau: the team can get into finishing positions, but so far they have not been efficient enough. They have scored only two goals in three league matches. Michael Olakigbe scored the equaliser for 1:1 against Sturm Graz, while Husein Balić put WSG ahead against Altach.
Olakigbe, Hinterseer and Balić carry the greatest threat
Michael Olakigbe has already scored against Sturm, and against Altach and Salzburg he got into dangerous situations. His pace could cause problems if Lustenau lose the ball with a larger number of players ahead of it.
Lukas Hinterseer brings experience and penalty-area play. Against Salzburg he was centimetres away from scoring when he hit the frame of the goal, but then failed to convert a penalty. It is important for WSG to find him in better positions and prevent him from becoming isolated between the home centre-backs.
Husein Balić showed against Altach his individual ability to create a goal. In the 13th minute he drove through into a finishing position and put WSG ahead. Thomas Goiginger also increases the number of options between the lines, and against Salzburg he started for the first time alongside Marc Striednig.
Philipp Semlic has been working with a significantly changed squad in recent weeks. Before the match against Salzburg, the club stated that Thomas Sabitzer was unavailable because of a muscle injury, while Quincy Butler is out with a cruciate ligament injury. Since the match in Lustenau is played almost two weeks after that announcement, the players' final status for 28 August still needs to be confirmed.
At Lustenau, the situation in the most recent announcement before the match against WAC was more favourable: Mader's coaching staff had the entire squad available at that time. Here too, the actual situation for WSG will become clearer only after the away match against Sturm Graz.
Head-to-head meetings: WSG have known how to win in Lustenau
These clubs did not meet in the league during Lustenau's spell outside the top division, so the most recent league head-to-head meetings come from the 2023/24 season.
- 17 September 2023: SC Austria Lustenau - WSG Tirol 2:3.
- 11 February 2024: WSG Tirol - SC Austria Lustenau 0:2.
- 30 March 2024: SC Austria Lustenau - WSG Tirol 1:2.
- 27 April 2024: WSG Tirol - SC Austria Lustenau 0:0.
WSG therefore won both away league matches against Lustenau that season, but today's teams have changed significantly. A more useful detail than the results themselves may be the fact that these clashes were often very close and important in the battle for points.
In September 2023, WSG led 2:0 in Lustenau, the hosts came back to 2:2, and Lukas Sulzbacher scored for 3:2. In March 2024, the Tyroleans again won away, this time 2:1. Between those two matches, however, Lustenau won 2:0 in Innsbruck.
For that reason, there is little sense in attributing a simple home advantage to this fixture. Current form, changed squads and the new SUN MINIMEAL Arena are more important factors than the results from 2023 and 2024.
How the match could unfold
Against WAC, Lustenau showed a model they could try to repeat. The team were aggressive when space opened up, and Weixelbraun, Afrifa, Diarra and Verinac were able to move the attack very quickly from midfield towards the penalty area.
WSG will have to pay particular attention to the moment after losing the ball. They conceded seven goals in the first three rounds, and Salzburg punished them for the first two goals within only a few minutes. If the full-backs and midfield push too high, Lustenau have enough pace to attack the vacated space.
On the other hand, the hosts cannot ignore what WSG did before half-time against Salzburg. Hinterseer, Olakigbe, Satin and Goiginger created chances against a strong opponent, and the 0:3 result did not tell the full story of the first half. If WSG improve their finishing, Lustenau cannot count on those misses being repeated.
The battle in midfield could be particularly interesting. Kacuri and Gashi can drive Lustenau forward, while WSG, with Satin, Striednig and other available midfielders, will try to create enough quality passes for Hinterseer and the quicker attackers.
The first goal could therefore strongly influence the character of the match. Against WAC, Lustenau showed that they are comfortable in a situation where they can defend a lead while simultaneously threatening through quick attacks. WSG took the lead against Altach but were unable to control the match until the end.
SUN MINIMEAL Arena: a small stadium where the crowd is very close to the pitch
The match is played at the SUN MINIMEAL Arena at Schützengartenstraße 21 in Lustenau. The stadium reopened in 2025 after reconstruction and represents a completely different environment from the temporary home Austria used during the works.
- Capacity: 5,138 spectators.
- Seats: 2,695.
- Standing places: 2,443.
- Pitch: natural grass measuring 105 x 68 metres with pitch heating.
- Approximately 800 bicycle parking spaces are available next to the main entrance.
The compact stands mean that the crowd is not far from the action on the pitch. The first home league match against Ried drew 4,178 spectators, while 3,907 people watched the victory over WAC. For a club that has just returned to the top division, that gives a clear picture of how strongly home matches attract the local crowd.
WSG will not be without support either. The club from Wattens has already announced organised travel for supporters to the match in Lustenau, so a visible away section can also be expected.
If you want to be in the stands, do not leave buying tickets until the last moment. The capacity of the SUN MINIMEAL Arena is considerably smaller than that of the league's large stadiums, while a Friday evening and a regionally interesting opponent make this fixture attractive to both sets of supporters.
Getting to the stadium and parking
The SUN MINIMEAL Arena is located in the central part of Lustenau and can be reached by public transport, car or bicycle. For visitors arriving from outside Vorarlberg, the simplest railway starting point is Lustenau Bahnhof, from where local bus connections run towards the sports complex.
- The stadium address is Schützengartenstraße 21, 6890 Lustenau.
- Bus lines 160 and 161 connect the Dornbirn and Lustenau areas and stop at GH Engel, from where the stadium is only a few minutes' walk away.
- Line 166 connects Lustenau Bahnhof and Sportpark.
- The main car park is located in Rheinvorland and is accessed via Reichshofstraße between house numbers 14 and 22.
- There is no regular parking for visitors' cars in front of the main entrance during matches, so it is better to use the designated parking areas and complete the final part of the journey on foot.
For arrivals from the direction of Bregenz, there are connections to Lustenau Bahnhof, from where the journey can continue by local bus. From the direction of Dornbirn, bus lines towards Lustenau offer an alternative to travelling by car. Passengers should check the timetable for the exact match date before departure because individual departure times may change.
For Lustenau's previous two home league matches starting at 17:00, the stadium opened at 15:30. A specific gate-opening time for the match against WSG Tirol, which starts at 19:30, had not yet been stated in the information reviewed up to 20 August. It is therefore not advisable to automatically assume the same opening time, but it certainly makes sense to arrive sufficiently early because of entrance checks and access to the stadium.
Lustenau is located in Vorarlberg, in the area along the Rhine, and for visiting supporters its relatively compact urban structure simplifies the final part of the journey to the stadium. If public transport is used, the Bahnhof and local bus connections are more practical than searching for parking immediately next to the stands.
Five things worth watching from the first whistle
- Antonio Verinac against WSG's defensive line: after two goals against WAC, the hosts will try to bring him into finishing positions again.
- WSG's finishing: chances were there against Salzburg, but they were not converted into a goal.
- Michael Olakigbe in open space: his pace is one of the visiting team's most direct threats.
- Lustenau's transition after winning the ball: Afrifa, Diarra and Weixelbraun can quickly change the direction of the match.
- WSG's reaction if they concede first: seven goals conceded in three rounds show where Semlic has the most work to do.
For Lustenau, a victory would be another important step in confirming a good return to the top flight. For WSG, the first full haul of the season would carry even greater weight because it would reduce the pressure created by two consecutive defeats and their current eleventh place.
The match also comes at an interesting point in the schedule. Lustenau will have a demanding test against Sturm Graz a few days earlier, while WSG will be able to direct all their training sessions after Salzburg towards the trip to the SUN MINIMEAL Arena. That could influence both the selection of the starting line-up and the intensity with which the two teams begin the match.
For a supporter planning a trip to Lustenau, this is one of those early-season clashes in which the points already have clear significance, even though plenty of football remains before the end of the championship. It is worth securing tickets in good time and planning the arrival so as to avoid congestion immediately before kick-off.
