Ararat-Armenia and Universitatea Craiova for a place in the league phase
Ararat-Armenia and Universitatea Craiova meet in Yerevan in the second leg of the Europa League play-off, the final qualifying obstacle before the league phase. The first match is played on 20 August in Craiova, while the decision comes on 27 August in the capital of Armenia. For both teams, the stakes are very concrete: the winner of the two-legged tie continues the season in the Europa League, while the loser is guaranteed a place in the league phase of the Conference League.
This means that neither team's European season will end in Yerevan, but the difference between the two possible destinations is large enough to give the return leg the weight of a genuine qualifying final. Ararat-Armenia is trying to confirm its strong start to the season and its status as Armenian champion, while Universitatea Craiova wants to play in the main phase of a European competition for the second year in a row and, in doing so, take a step beyond the minimum guaranteed qualification.

Ararat-Armenia enters the season with a winning rhythm
The team coached by Portuguese manager Tulipa opened the domestic championship with three victories. Ararat-Armenia defeated Gandzasar 4-3, Urartu 2-1 and Van 2-0, and after three appearances had a maximum nine points and a goal difference of +4. Such a start is also important because of the rhythm: the host of the return leg has already played a series of high-intensity competitive matches during the summer.
The path through European qualifying also shows that Ararat-Armenia is not a team that is easy to control in Yerevan. Against Riga FC, it won the first home match 2-0, and then defeated Shamrock Rovers by the same score on its own ground. In the next round, it beat Celje 2-1 in Yerevan, although it lost the return leg 2-0 and was eliminated from that competition.
Ararat-Armenia's last five results before the first match against Craiova show four victories and one defeat:

The home victory against Celje is particularly interesting. Ararat-Armenia fell behind, but Artur Serobyan equalised in the 38th minute, and França completed the turnaround in the 70th minute. That match demonstrated two things Universitatea Craiova should keep in mind: the Armenian champion does not have to dominate from the start to remain in the game and has enough attacking options to change the course of the match from the bench.
Sandro Lima, França and Serobyan carry the attacking threat
During qualifying, Tulipa most often used a 4-3-3 formation, particularly in home matches. In some away games he also opted for a different structure, but in Yerevan his team showed a willingness to use three players in the front line to press the opposing defence and quickly attack space after winning the ball.
Sandro Lima is one of the most experienced players in the squad. In six matches in the previous qualifying competition, he scored three goals. França scored two in the same period, while Artur Serobyan, Zidane Banjaqui and Zhirayr Shaghoyan were also among the scorers. This gives Ararat-Armenia several different sources of finishing rather than relying on only one striker.
In midfield, captain Karen Muradyan is an important figure, while Tulipa can choose between players such as Alwyn Tera, Juan Balanta, Bernardo Dias and Banjaqui. In defence, Bruno Wilson, Junior Bueno, Hugo Oliveira, Edgar Grigoryan and Alexandros Malis have all received significant playing time during the European matches.
Against Celje, Ararat-Armenia's starting 11 included João Bravim in goal, a defensive line featuring Hugo Oliveira, Junior Bueno, Bruno Wilson and Edgar Grigoryan, while Serobyan and Sandro Lima were among the main attacking options. França came off the bench and scored the winning goal. That depth in particular could become important if the return leg reaches the final 20 or 30 minutes with a scoreline that leaves qualification open.
Universitatea Craiova arrives with a different rhythm of results
Universitatea Craiova under Filipe Coelho did not have such a clean start to the domestic season. After five league matches, it had two victories, one draw and two defeats, with 10 goals scored and seven conceded. Its final league appearance before the tie with Ararat-Armenia ended 1-1 away at Oțelul Galați.
Craiova's form in the five matches before the first play-off game looked like this:

- KuPS - Universitatea Craiova 1-1
- Universitatea Craiova - FC Argeș 0-1
- Universitatea Craiova - KuPS 2-1

The most important result in that sequence is the 2-1 win against KuPS. Craiova conceded an early goal but came back through Steven Nsimba from the penalty spot and Carlos Mora in the second half. The victory completed a 3-2 aggregate win in the tie and took the team into the play-off.
At the same time, that match showed both the team's strength and weakness. Craiova has enough quality to recover after a poor start, but it will not want to allow itself to fall behind early again in the return leg in Yerevan. If Ararat-Armenia is given room for a high press and the crowd immediately senses that the match is moving in the home side's direction, the visitors' task can become considerably more uncomfortable.
Baiaram, Nsimba, Bancu and Mora can change the match
Ștefan Baiaram remains one of Craiova's most important attacking players. He was among the scorers in the previous European qualifiers, and his ability to attack space from the left gives Coelho a player who can create an overload without lengthy possession. Alongside him, Steven Nsimba has already shown his importance with his goal against KuPS, while Carlos Mora scored the winner in the same match.
Nicușor Bancu brings experience and production from a somewhat deeper position. In four matches in an earlier stage of European qualifying, he scored two goals. Adrian Rus was also among the scorers, while in midfield Coelho has players such as Alexandru Cicâldău, Anzor Mekvabishvili, Tudor Băluță and Vladimir Screciu.
Coelho has often used a system with three centre-backs and wide wing-backs. Such a setup could be particularly interesting in Yerevan. If Bancu and the player on the opposite side are positioned high enough, Craiova can force Ararat-Armenia's wingers to track back deep towards their own penalty area. But there is another side to that idea: losing the ball with the wide players positioned high opens space precisely for Serobyan, Shaghoyan and the other quick home options.
That is why one of the main tactical battles should be on the flanks. Ararat-Armenia, in a 4-3-3 setup, wants width and the possibility of breaking forward quickly. Craiova, through a system with three players in the back line, tries to gain an extra player in the build-up and push its wide players forward. The team that better protects the space after losing the ball will probably have a major advantage.
The result of the first match will dictate the entire plan for the return leg
Because this guide is being prepared before the first match in Craiova, there is no meaningful way to claim in advance what kind of result Ararat-Armenia will be defending or chasing in Yerevan. It is precisely the situation after the first match that will determine how much Tulipa and Coelho are willing to risk.
If Ararat-Armenia brings a positive result back to Armenia, a more controlled opening and waiting for space behind the visitors' wide players could suit the home side. If it has to overturn a deficit, the home 4-3-3 structure and proven strong form in Yerevan allow for a considerably more aggressive approach.
The same applies to Craiova. An advantage from the first match could increase the importance of the experience of players such as Bancu, Cicâldău and Crețu, while the need for a goal would increase the responsibility on Baiaram, Nsimba and Mora.
Before the first match, these two clubs have no recorded competitive meeting. The return leg in Yerevan will therefore be their second encounter in only a week, but the coaches will already have 90 minutes of very fresh information about where they can attack their opponent.
Absences and line-ups: leave the final check for matchday
For Craiova, ahead of the first match Transfermarkt listed Alexandru Iamandache among the unavailable players, with a note regarding a knee injury and ineligibility to play, Pavlo Isenko because of a meniscus problem, and Ronaldo Webster with an unspecified issue. Because there is still another week until the return leg, the status of each player may change.
For Ararat-Armenia, there is not enough reliably confirmed public information about absences for the return leg to responsibly list specific players in advance. It is more important to monitor the line-up in the first match and any problems that arise during it.

For visitors, the most important practical information is to check the location before setting off. The initial event information listed TCA Stadium at Acharyan St 33/1, but the current competition schedule for the Ararat-Armenia - Universitatea Craiova return leg lists Republican Stadium after Vazgen Sargsyan.
This is an important difference because it is a different location in Yerevan. Republican Stadium after Vazgen Sargsyan is located at 65 Vardanants Street. According to StadiumDB data, the stadium has a capacity of 14,403 and is considerably larger than the ground where Ararat-Armenia plays some of its home matches.
Ararat-Armenia has already played European matches there this season, including the 2-1 victory against Celje. For travelling supporters, this means they should not rely only on a previously saved location or the initial event confirmation.
Practical information for arrival:
- For navigation, use Republican Stadium after Vazgen Sargsyan, 65 Vardanants Street, Yerevan.
- The stadium is in the wider central area of Yerevan and can be reached on foot from the central parts of the city.
- Zoravar Andranik is a useful metro station for access to this part of the city, followed by a walk towards the stadium.
- If you are arriving by car or taxi, expect traffic immediately around the stadium to be slower before and after the match.
- The exact opening time of the entrances has not been published reliably enough in advance, so it is worth checking closer to matchday.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly when a qualifying tie decides progression to the league phase, so it is worth securing tickets in good time and leaving enough flexibility in the travel plan for a possible change in the traffic regime around the stadium.
What to expect from the atmosphere in Yerevan
Ararat-Armenia may not have decades of European history behind it, but this summer's results clearly show that home ground suits the team. Riga FC and Shamrock Rovers were beaten 2-0, and Celje 2-1. Three such matches give the crowd a very simple reason to believe another step can be made in Yerevan.
Republican Stadium after Vazgen Sargsyan also changes the feel of the event compared with the club's considerably smaller everyday home ground. A capacity of more than 14,000 gives the qualifying return leg room for louder noise and a larger crowd, especially if the result of the first match leaves both teams realistically fighting for qualification.
For Craiova, this will not be a completely new experience. The team has played a series of European away matches over recent seasons and has already travelled to Belarus, Bulgaria and Finland this summer through different qualifying rounds. Nevertheless, the match in Yerevan comes right on the boundary between two European league phases, and the psychological pressure will therefore be different.
The home side will want to use the energy from the stands without unnecessarily opening space. Craiova will try to survive the first waves of pressure and turn the match into a tactically controlled contest as quickly as possible. If the score remains level deep into the second half, experience and the quality of the substitutes could become more important than the starting formations.
Yerevan as a base for travelling supporters
Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, and the stadium is located close enough to the central urban areas that attending the match does not require staying on the outskirts solely because of football. Republic Square, Vernissage and the central streets can be combined with the journey towards the stadium without a long intercity transfer.
For supporters arriving by plane, the main entry point is Zvartnots International Airport. For the match evening itself, it is more practical to plan the journey from accommodation in the city rather than arriving directly from the airport, especially because traffic around the stadium may increase before kick-off.
August in Yerevan can be very hot. A temperature of 34 degrees was recorded during Ararat-Armenia's home match against Celje in early August. That does not mean conditions will be the same for the return leg, but it shows why it is worth checking the weather forecast immediately before arrival and adjusting the departure time for the stadium accordingly.
Ticket sales for this match are under way, and when planning the trip the most important thing is to use the current stadium location and check the organisational information again immediately before the match.
The numbers that best describe the tie
Ararat-Armenia enters the match as the reigning Armenian champion and with a perfect record from the first three rounds of the new domestic season. Tulipa's team has also already shown that it can play open matches but also protect an advantage at home.
Universitatea Craiova has more variable results, but the progression against KuPS showed an ability to react under pressure. Nsimba and Mora were the scorers in the match that directly guaranteed at least a place in the Conference League league phase, and now the team has an opportunity to raise its European season to a higher level.

Ararat-Armenia, however, has already proved in the summer of 2026 that it can punish quality opponents in Yerevan. That is why the result of the first match could be more important than any initial assessment of the favourite: the team that brings an advantage to Armenia will be able to choose the rhythm, while the opponent will sooner or later have to open up space.
