SC Telstar - AFC Ajax: guide to the clash in Velsen-Zuid

SC Telstar and AFC Ajax enter the fourth round of the Eredivisie in an unusual situation: both clubs have played only two league matches. Telstar's third-round clash against FC Twente was moved to September, and the same applies to Ajax's match against Willem II. Ajax have four points and a goal difference of 4-2, while Telstar have three points with 3-4.

According to the table updated on 23 August, Ajax are fourth and Telstar thirteenth. For the visitors, this is an opportunity to continue their pursuit of the top before the clash with PSV in the next round. For Telstar, every point against one of the strongest teams in the league is important in a season in which they want to confirm their status in the top flight.

An additional layer to the match is provided by Ajax's European schedule. Míchel Sánchez's team play the return leg against FC Sion three days before the trip to Velsen-Zuid. The second round brought a different picture. Sparta Rotterdam won 3-1 at the BUKO Stadion. Telstar allowed 16 shots, nine of them on target, while they had seven attempts themselves and only one shot on target. Abdelnour Soualhia scored the home side's only goal.

Telstar's form so far:

• Telstar - Sparta Rotterdam 1-3: goal by Abdelnour Soualhia.

That friendly is not an indicator of the standard starting lineup, but it is important because of match rhythm. Since the league clash with FC Twente was postponed, Brugge received additional time to work with the first-team players and minutes for players who featured less in the opening two rounds.

Telstar players worth watching

Patrick Brouwer immediately made his mark with a goal and an assist in Nijmegen. Rui Mendes, a summer signing who played for FC Emmen and FC Groningen before arriving, also scored in the first round. Jelani Seedorf started at the top of the attack in the first two league matches.

Experience in the back line is provided by Marvin Peersman, who arrived after 103 appearances for FC Groningen over three seasons. Alongside him, Jeff Hardeveld, Abdelnour Soualhia and Gerald Alders started in the opening two rounds. Telstar began both matches in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Against Ajax, it will be particularly important how long that structure can remain compact. Telstar showed against N.E.C. that they can defend deep and survive a large volume of attacks, but Sparta demonstrated how quickly the risk increases when the opponent regularly gets into positions for clear shots.

Ajax under Míchel: squad depth and an ongoing search for balance

Míchel Sánchez took over Ajax this summer after five seasons at Girona FC. In the first two league rounds, his team used a 4-2-3-1. In Zwolle, Ajax beat PEC Zwolle 2-0, with both goals coming after the 75th minute. Jorthy Mokio opened the scoring, and Julian Brandt completed it in stoppage time.

A week later, Ajax led sc Heerenveen 2-0 at home, but the match ended 2-2. The first goal was an own goal by goalkeeper Bernt Klaverboer after an attempt by Aaron Bouwman, and Abdellah Ouazane scored the second. Heerenveen came back through Jacob Trenskow. Ajax had 23 shots, but only four on target.

The squad also changed during August. Mika Godts moved to Paris Saint-Germain, Ko Itakura returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Don-Angelo Konadu was loaned to Lommel SK. Young defender Jofre Torrents joined the squad and has already travelled to the European match in Switzerland.

Player status ahead of match week

Ajax's latest public information regarding availability comes from preparations for the first match against FC Sion. Daley Blind and Maher Carrizo were not in the squad at that time. Dies Janse returned after getting minutes for Jong Ajax, and Josip Šutalo also travelled with the team. This is not the final list for Telstar because Ajax have another match before that away game.

• The nearest railway station is Driehuis, about 750 metres on foot from the stadium.
• The IJmuiden - Heerenduinweg bus stop is about 200 metres away.
• Parking in front of the main entrance is not available. Designated public spaces opposite the stadium can be used, as well as alternatives at Pontplein, Dudokplein and Zwembad Heerenduinen. P1, P2 and P3 on the northern side are reserved for users with the appropriate passes, staff and media.
• Cash is not accepted inside the stadium; payment is by card.

For the match against Ajax, the ticket sales announcement has not yet specified the exact time when the gates will open. For the first home league match against Sparta Rotterdam, the stadium opened 90 minutes before kick-off, but that schedule should not automatically be applied to Ajax. Visitors should check the latest matchday notice before setting off.

It is worth securing tickets in good time, but it is equally important to plan transport early. According to Telstar's information, the car park opposite the stadium often fills up well before kick-off, so the train to Driehuis, the bus or a bicycle are practical alternatives.
