TSV Hartberg - Sturm Graz: guide to the Styrian derby at the Profertil Arena

TSV Hartberg and Sturm Graz meet on 8 August 2026 in the second round of the Austrian Bundesliga, in Hartberg's first home league appearance of the new season. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30 at the Profertil Arena Hartberg, at Otto-Gerlitz-Platz 2. The match comes only a week after different but equally frustrating league openers: Hartberg lost 1:0 in Salzburg through Karim Konaté's goal in the 89th minute, while Sturm drew 1:1 against WSG Tirol in Innsbruck after surrendering the lead.

After Saturday's part of the first round, Sturm have one point, while Hartberg remain without a point. The hosts want to avoid a second defeat, while last season's runners-up do not want a second draw at the start.

Tickets for this match are in high demand among supporters. Hartberg filled all 5,085 seats for their previous home meeting with Sturm Graz in November 2025, and this fixture also combines a local rivalry, a short journey for the visiting supporters and Hartberg's first home league outing of the season.

What they showed in the first round

Against Salzburg, Hartberg spent a long time doing exactly what they will also need against Sturm: they closed the centre, defended the penalty area in large numbers and tried to attack the space behind a high defensive line. Salzburg had 73.1 percent possession, 36 attempts and 19 corners, but only seven shots were on target. Ármin Pécsi saved six, and Hartberg held the score at 0:0 until the 89th minute, when Konaté headed in Dominik Schmid's cross.

Five attempts in total and only one shot on target leave far too little room for error. Against Sturm, Markus Schopp's team must remain compact, but they also need to involve their wingers and forwards more quickly after winning the ball.

Szymon Włodarczyk put Sturm ahead in the 29th minute after a move in which Jon Gorenc Stanković found Emran Soglo with a long pass, before Soglo sent a low ball across the face of an empty goal. Michael Olakigbe equalised in the 42nd minute, exploiting space to enter the penalty area and shoot into the far corner. Sturm applied pressure after the break but could not find a second goal, so Hartberg can take confidence from the fact that a disciplined line and pressure on the passer can slow the visitors' runs behind the defence.

Sturm arrive amid a congested schedule

Fabio Ingolitsch's team arrive in Hartberg between two European matches against Fenerbahçe. The first match is scheduled for 5 August in Istanbul, with the return leg taking place on 11 August in Graz. This does not necessarily mean that Sturm will field a reserve side, but it increases the likelihood of rotation and careful management of playing time.

Before the league draw, Sturm had recorded three consecutive competitive victories without conceding a goal. Simon Seidl and Emran Soglo scored in the return leg in Edinburgh, while Soglo then also assisted Włodarczyk against WSG. That run demonstrates how much Sturm can gain from the left side, where Soglo combines width, pace and runs into finishing positions.

Ingolitsch used a back three in the first round, with highly active wing-backs. In possession, the structure expanded into a 3-4-3, while without the ball it contracted into a more compact block.

Sturm's most important squad limitation is already known: forward Amady Camara is unavailable for several weeks because of a muscular injury. His absence further increases the importance of Włodarczyk, Seedy Jatta and the other attacking options during a period in which matches are being played every three or four days.

Hartberg seek a greater attacking threat under Schopp

Markus Schopp returned to Hartberg in May 2026 and is once again leading a team he knows well. The summer squad has changed in several positions. The new names include goalkeeper Ármin Pécsi, Magnus Dalpiaz, Florian Gerstl, Agustín Urrutia, Angelo Gattermayer and Oliver Lukic, while Nikolaus Feldhofer and Matthias Postl have been promoted from the club's system.

In Salzburg, Pazourek and Gattermayer came on at half-time, followed later by Urrutia, Feldhofer and Drew. These players give Schopp the option of increasing the team's pace and directness during the match.

Gattermayer and Drew provide more direct play, Pazourek offers penetration from wide areas, while Urrutia gives the team a presence in attack. A home match demands more than merely surviving without the ball.

Lukas Fridrikas will not be part of that plan. The creative forward is recovering from cruciate ligament surgery, and the club has described his absence as long-term. This deprives Hartberg of the player who scored from the penalty spot in the most recent meeting between the teams. Without him, a greater share of the responsibility for connecting midfield and attack falls to Kainz, Hoffmann, Gattermayer, Drew and Urrutia.

What Hartberg must do better

• Break forward more quickly after winning the ball instead of immediately falling back under a new wave of pressure.
• Reduce the number of unnecessary defensive set pieces from which Sturm can send their centre-backs into the penalty area.
• Force Soglo to defend more than he attacks by using the space behind his starting position.
• Retain the first long ball more effectively so that the midfield has time to join the attack.
• Take advantage of any changes in Sturm's line-up following their European away match in Istanbul.

The head-to-head record makes Sturm Graz the favourites

Since the 1974/75 season, the clubs have played 22 league matches against each other. Sturm have 13 wins, Hartberg have four, and five matches ended without a winner. The overall goal difference is 36:24 in Sturm's favour.

The most recent meeting was played on 10 May 2026 at the Profertil Arena. Sturm won 4:2 in front of 4,955 spectators. Albert Vallci scored in the second minute, Hartberg equalised through Luca Pazourek, and a Benjamin Markuš own goal and an Otar Kiteishvili strike gave the visitors a 3:1 lead after 25 minutes. Lukas Fridrikas reduced the deficit from the penalty spot before Luca Weinhandl set the final score.

However, the previous meeting in Graz ended 0:0. Hartberg thereby demonstrated that they can slow Sturm down if they remain compact and avoid conceding an early goal. The start of the match is crucial: in May, Sturm scored three times in the opening 25 minutes in Hartberg, leaving the hosts to spend the rest of the evening trying to repair the damage.

The historical record and squad depth place Sturm in the role of favourites, but the visitors' congested schedule and Hartberg's low block could make the match uncomfortable. Seats in the stands disappear quickly for regional encounters of this kind.

Tactical details that could decide the match

The first duel will be Hartberg's right side against Soglo. If the hosts allow Sturm's left-sided player to receive the ball without pressure, the visitors can repeat the move from the first round: a long pass behind the midfield line, Soglo moving into space and a low ball towards the forward. Hartberg must therefore close down the passer while simultaneously ensuring that the full-back is not left alone in a two-against-one situation.

The second detail is the battle for the second ball. Sturm often send a forward towards the defensive line, while Seidl, Hödl and Fosso attack the rebounds. Three stands are covered, and the stadium underwent extensive renovation in 2025: a new south stand was built, the main stand was expanded, the east stand was refurbished and a new spectator area was opened behind the south end.

Because of the small capacity, the stands are close to the pitch, allowing noise to spread quickly onto the playing surface. This is particularly noticeable when Sturm visit, as their supporters have a relatively short journey from Graz. A divided and loud atmosphere is expected, with blue-and-white home sections and strong away support.

Supporters should plan to arrive early, and because of the expected traffic, the club has recommended approaching the stadium in good time.

• The stadium is a few minutes' walk from the listed parking areas, but because of congestion, visitors should allow for a slower approach to the town and the entrances.

Hartberg is a small town in eastern Styria, and the stadium is close to the centre. Visitors arriving from outside Austria should check evening return connections via Graz or Vienna in advance.

What supporters can expect on the pitch

Sturm will probably try to take control of possession, push their wide players forward and keep Hartberg deep. Their greatest advantage is the larger number of players capable of deciding the match with a single action. Włodarczyk attacks the space inside the six-yard box, Seidl looks for shots after arriving from deeper positions, and Soglo can create an overload along the touchline.

Hartberg will look for a different scenario: a compact block, winning second balls and quickly breaking into the spaces behind Sturm's flanks. Pécsi already showed in Salzburg that he can keep the team in the match, but the hosts cannot expect the goalkeeper to spend the entire evening correcting the consequences of the opposition's dominance again.

The first goal could completely transform the match. If Sturm take an early lead, they can control the tempo and force Hartberg to open up more space. If the hosts withstand the initial pressure or score first, the visitors will have to accelerate during a week in which they travel to a demanding league away match between two European fixtures.

It is worth securing tickets in good time and entering the stadium sufficiently early.
