UFC Fight Night in Shanghai: an evening that could reshape the top of the bantamweight division
UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs Song brings elite MMA back to the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, and the main event carries considerably more weight than an ordinary Fight Night main event. Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong are among the leading names in the bantamweight division, so the result in Shanghai could directly affect their position in the race for future fights at the very top of the division.
On the current UFC event page, Nurmagomedov is listed as the third-ranked bantamweight contender and Song as the sixth-ranked contender. Local interest is further increased by the fact that Song is competing in China, while the co-main event brings another important fight for Chinese MMA: Yan Xiaonan against Denise Gomes in the strawweight division.
The program is not limited to Saturday. The ticket is valid for two days, with Friday reserved for the Road to UFC Season 5 semifinals. That portion begins at 17:00 local time. UFC Fight Night follows on Saturday, when the first fight is scheduled for 15:00 and the main portion of the program for 18:00.

Umar Nurmagomedov against Song Yadong - a clash of styles at the top of the bantamweight division
The main event is interesting above all because both fighters can win in several ways, but they reach their best positions through different routes. Nurmagomedov is extremely difficult to deal with once he begins combining movement, kicks, level changes and takedowns. Song is more naturally oriented toward striking, with explosive boxing and the ability to punish an opponent as soon as he gets room for a clean exchange.
Nurmagomedov has a professional MMA record of 20-1. His only defeat came against Merab Dvalishvili in a UFC bantamweight title fight in January 2025. He then defeated Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo by unanimous decision, which kept him immediately near the top of the division.
His UFC numbers explain well how he controls fights. He averages 4.03 takedowns per 15 minutes, has a takedown defense rate of 79 percent and absorbs only 1.86 significant strikes per minute. That does not mean every exchange will end on the ground. The threat of a takedown itself is one of the reasons his strikes become more dangerous - the opponent has to watch the distance, kicks and level changes at the same time.
Song enters with a professional record of 23-9-1. The UFC describes him as a boxer, while the statistics show 4.34 significant strikes landed per minute and 74 percent takedown defense. He has nine professional wins by knockout and four by submission, so it would not be accurate to reduce him to just a striker.
His form over his last several appearances is particularly important. After defeating Henry Cejudo by technical decision in 2025, Song lost a unanimous decision to Sean O'Malley at the beginning of 2026. In May he returned with a victory over Deiveson Figueiredo, whom he finished with a guillotine in the second round. That result is important ahead of Nurmagomedov because it shows that Song can punish a mistake in a grappling situation, not only with clean strikes.
What to watch in the main event
The most important detail could be the space between the center of the octagon and the fence. If Song stays in the center, he can use his hand speed, short combinations and counterattacks after Nurmagomedov's entries. If Nurmagomedov forces him to retreat toward the fence, he gains far more opportunities to connect the clinch, takedowns and control.
- Distance management: Song will try to maintain space for boxing, while Nurmagomedov can change the distance with kicks and the threat of a takedown.
- Takedown defense: Song's 74 percent takedown defense will face a serious test if Nurmagomedov begins linking several attempts together in the same sequence.
- Pace: a five-round fight rewards discipline. Spending energy too quickly while defending wrestling can completely change the final two rounds.
- Work against the fence: spectators should watch hip position and hand fighting. This often reveals who is controlling the grappling before the takedown is even completed.
- Submission threats: Nurmagomedov has seven professional wins by submission, while Song finished his most recent appearance with a guillotine.
For Song, it is especially important that takedown defense does not become his only task. If he waits too much for Nurmagomedov's entry, he can lose his own attacking initiative. On the other hand, Nurmagomedov cannot charge straight forward without risk against a fighter who has Song's speed and power in short boxing combinations.
Yan Xiaonan and Denise Gomes bring an important co-main event
The co-main event between Yan Xiaonan and Denise Gomes carries its own significance within the women's strawweight division. On the event page, Yan is listed as the fourth-ranked contender and Gomes as the thirteenth. The difference in their positions in the rankings means Yan is defending her place in the upper part of the division, while Gomes gets an opportunity to make a major leap against a former title challenger.
Yan has a professional record of 19-5 and eight wins by knockout. UFC statistics list her at 4.69 significant strikes per minute, with most of her offense coming from the standing position. Her style often relies on movement, striking volume and the ability to quickly exit an exchange before her opponent can answer with a full combination.
Gomes enters the fight with a record of 12-3 and seven wins by knockout. The most recent appearance recorded on her UFC profile ended in a victory over Tecia Pennington in November 2025. Against Yan, simply looking for one powerful strike will not be enough. She will have to find a way to close the distance against an opponent with extensive experience fighting ranked rivals.
For spectators in the arena, it will be interesting to compare this matchup with the main event. Nurmagomedov and Song offer constant tension between wrestling and striking, while Yan and Gomes could spend more time in fast striking sequences and in a battle for control of the center of the octagon.
The fight card has a strong Asia-Pacific character
The currently announced program includes a range of fighters from China, Japan, Mongolia and other parts of the Asia-Pacific scene, alongside established UFC names from other countries. That gives Shanghai a different character from a standard Fight Night in North America.

Ce Liu against Junior Tafa brings a completely different dynamic. Liu comes from an elite kickboxing environment, and the UFC announced his arrival in the organization precisely through the matchup with Tafa at light heavyweight. For spectators, it is a good example of a fight in which it is worth watching how well a striking reputation can translate to MMA, where every aggressive entry has to account for takedowns, the clinch and work against the fence.
Aoriqileng against Kai Asakura is another matchup with strong regional interest. Such pairings work particularly well in front of an audience already familiar with fighters from the Asian MMA scene, so the crowd's reaction is often noticeable long before the main program begins.

Among the confirmed semifinal matchups are BoHyun Park against Farida Abdueva and Machi Fukuda against Meng Bo in the women's strawweight division, Jiniushiyue against Takeru Uchida and Joseph Larcinese against Takaya Suzuki at flyweight, Kasib Murdoch against Rabindra Dhant and Chungreng Koren against Ryo Tajima at bantamweight, and Ahejiang Ailinuer against George Mangos and Dagiisuren Chagnaadorj against YoungJae Song at featherweight.
For a visitor attending both days, the change in perspective is particularly interesting. On Friday, spectators watch fighters trying to earn entry onto the larger UFC stage. A day later, in the same complex, Nurmagomedov, Song, Yan and other fighters who already have experience competing under major pressure step into action.
What the UFC looks like from inside the arena

With Nurmagomedov, it is worth observing what he does immediately before a takedown attempt. If he lands several kicks or punches from the same initial movement, Song has to react before knowing whether a strike or an entry toward the legs is coming. With Song, watch how quickly he returns to offense after defending. A successful takedown defense is worth much more if it is immediately followed by a combination that forces the opponent to think twice about entering again.

For a major sporting event, the metro is a particularly practical option. Oriental Sports Center station is connected to lines 6, 8 and 11 of the Shanghai Metro, allowing visitors to reach the complex from multiple parts of the city without relying on road traffic around the arena.
That is also useful for travelers coming to Shanghai only for the UFC weekend. Instead of choosing accommodation solely according to its distance from the arena, it is more practical to check its connection with one of those three lines and the time required for transfers. Shanghai has a very extensive public transportation network, and the station next to the sports complex eliminates the need for a long final transfer across the city.
The complex was designed for major international sporting competitions and includes several sports facilities. For the UFC, the key venue is the indoor arena, where the configuration for a combat sports event creates a different feeling from standard indoor sports: the focal point of the entire space becomes the illuminated octagon, while fighter entrances and production take place around it.
Planning your arrival without unnecessary rushing
Saturday's program begins at 15:00 local time, while the start of the main portion is scheduled for 18:00. Visitors who want to watch the entire card should plan to arrive before the first fight rather than according to the start time of the main event.
For a UFC event, the reason is not only a possible queue at the entrance. Arriving earlier leaves time to find the section and seat and become familiar with the arena layout before the fights begin. The fight card then proceeds continuously, with production breaks between individual matchups, so it is much easier to settle in before the start than to enter while the program is already underway.
The same logic applies on Friday. Road to UFC begins at 17:00, and the tournament format means every fight has an immediate competitive consequence - victory leads toward the final, while defeat ends the fighter's journey through the season.

Why this is an important evening for the bantamweight division
After his only professional defeat, Nurmagomedov returned with two consecutive victories. Song responded to his loss against O'Malley with a submission victory over Figueiredo. Both therefore arrive in Shanghai with a clear argument for another major step forward, but a defeat would move them away from the immediate discussion about the very top of the bantamweight division once again.
For Nurmagomedov, the question is whether he can once again confirm that he belongs among the leading contenders after the experience of fighting for the title. For Song, the opportunity is particularly valuable because a victory over a former title challenger in front of a crowd in China would be a result that is difficult to ignore when the top of the division is next arranged.
The co-main event follows similar logic on a different ladder. Yan Xiaonan is trying to maintain her status as one of the leading strawweight fighters, while Denise Gomes gets the opportunity to dramatically change her own position with a victory over the fourth-ranked opponent.
For that reason, the final fights of the evening should not be viewed merely as attractive pairings. Every result changes the next round of possible opponents, while the differences in styles create concrete tactical questions that can be followed minute by minute.
