Panama did its attacking job and defeated the Dominican Republic in a preparatory match

Panama won an effective and eventful football match against the Dominican Republic 4:2 at Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez in Panama City. The match was recorded in international services on 04 June 2026 at 00:45 UTC, while according to local time in Panama it was played on the evening of 03 June, in the time slot that the Panamanian Football Federation announced as the national team's farewell home appearance before the final part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup. According to Diario AS's live report, the goals for Panama were scored by Tomás Rodríguez in the 16th minute, Víctor Griffith in the 44th, Cecilio Waterman in the 57th and Kadir Barría in the 89th minute. For the Dominican Republic, Mariano Díaz in the 47th and Erick Japa in the 67th minute were accurate. The final 4:2 confirms the basic impression of the match: Panama did its attacking job, but after the break allowed the opponent to return to the scoreline context twice.

Panama took control early, and settled the finish in the 89th minute

According to the match report, Panama took the lead in the 16th minute when Tomás Rodríguez finished the home national team's attack with a shot from the center of the penalty area. That early goal gave the match the expected rhythm because Thomas Christiansen's team could play with more confidence, while the Dominican Republic had to open its lines earlier and search for a response. Panama increased its advantage before the break in the 44th minute, when Víctor Griffith scored for 2:0 and enabled the host to go to the dressing room with a result that looked very stable. In the first half, the impression was especially important that Panama did not force possession exclusively, but in the final third found solutions quickly enough and turned attacks into concrete situations. Such an approach suited the character of a friendly match, but also the national team's need in the final phase of preparations to check the depth of the squad, reactions after lost balls and efficiency in front of goal.

The Dominican Republic did not fall apart after two goals conceded, which was visible immediately at the start of the second half. According to the same live record, Mariano Díaz reduced the score to 2:1 already in the 47th minute, assisted by Juanca Pineda, thereby returning the match to a competitive frame. Panama responded in the 57th minute through Cecilio Waterman, who was assisted by Andrés Andrade, so the host again had a two-goal advantage. Still, Erick Japa reduced it to 3:2 in the 67th minute and extended the period of uncertainty, especially because numerous changes followed in the second half and the tempo of the match became more open. Panama's victory was secured by Kadir Barría in the 89th minute, after an assist from Éric Davis, with which the home national team rounded off a very productive attacking evening.

A preparatory match with a clear World Cup background

In its announcement, the Panamanian Football Federation presented this match as the national team's final appearance on home soil before the trip to North America and the continuation of preparations for the World Cup. The FPF stated that the match against the Dominican Republic was also conceived as a farewell in front of the home crowd, before departure to St. Louis for a friendly match with Bosnia and Herzegovina and then onward to Canada, where Panama has its final base before the start of the tournament. In that context, the 4:2 result carries more weight than an ordinary friendly outcome, because it comes at a moment when the coaching staff is trying to balance the needs for freshness, competitive rhythm and tactical automatisms. A national team preparing for the World Cup usually does not seek only a victory in such matches, but also confirmation that individual players can take on roles in different phases of the match. In precisely that sense, Panama received several useful answers, above all through the efficiency of four different scorers.

According to the FPF announcement from 26 May 2026, Thomas Christiansen published a list of 26 players for the World Cup, with additionally indicated reserves who remain with the national team. That information explains why the match against the Dominican Republic also had internal selection importance: minutes in such matches serve to check the form, health condition and compatibility of players who are fighting for a clearer role in the system. Kadir Barría, who is listed among the reserves in the FPF list, got an opportunity in the closing stage and scored the fourth goal, so his performance will certainly be part of the professional analysis. Cecilio Waterman also made use of his entry from the bench, which is important for a national team that must have more attacking solutions if it finds itself in a situation of chasing the result at the World Cup. In such a schedule of matches, squad depth is not only a formality, but one of the key prerequisites for maintaining intensity.

The Dominican Republic punished the drop in concentration after the break

For the Dominican Republic, the 4:2 defeat does not bring a positive result, but it does bring several elements that may be useful in the continuation of the national-team cycle. According to Diario AS's report, the team scored both goals in the second half, first through Mariano Díaz in the 47th minute, and then through Erick Japa in the 67th minute. Such a distribution of goals shows that the visiting national team did not remain passive after falling behind 2:0, but through changes and a more direct attacking approach managed to find space behind the Panamanian defense. In friendly matches, the result does not always reveal everything, but two goals against a national team preparing to appear at the World Cup represent a signal that the Dominican Republic has individual quality in attack. At the same time, four goals conceded show that defensive reactions and control of the space in front of its own goal remained problematic, especially at moments when Panama accelerated the play down the flanks or attacked with players arriving from the second line.

The Dominican Republic arrived in Panama City in the role of an opponent that does not have the same World Cup pressure as the host, but precisely because of that it could play more freely. In such circumstances, visiting national teams often look for a test against a stronger opponent in order to check their ability to play out of pressure and the organization of transition. Mariano Díaz showed with his goal immediately after the break how important the first attack of the second half can be, because one moment of concentration changed the emotional tone of the match. Erick Japa, with the second goal, further strengthened the impression that Panama did not have a completely calm evening in defense. For the home national team's coaching staff, this is a useful warning: the attacking output was very good, but reactions after substitutions and the protection of space in front of the penalty area require additional refinement.

Christiansen gained depth in attack, but also material for defensive analysis

The most important sporting conclusion for Panama concerns attacking variety. Four goals, four different scorers and the decisive contribution of players who came off the bench give the coaching staff an argument that the team, in the closing stage of preparations, does not depend on only one attacking profile. Tomás Rodríguez opened the match and confirmed that he can be useful in the finishing phase of moves, Víctor Griffith increased the pressure on the competition in midfield with his goal before the break, Cecilio Waterman delivered an impact after coming on, and Kadir Barría closed the match at a moment when it still had scoreline tension. According to FPF data, immediately before this match Panama went through a demanding test against Brazil at the Maracanã, where it lost 6:2, so the return to winning in front of the home crowd also had psychological value. In a preparatory period, it is not unimportant how a team reacts after a heavy defeat, especially when a tournament is approaching in which every detail will be under greater pressure.

On the other hand, the two goals conceded against the Dominican Republic warn that the victory must not hide the weaker phases of the match. Panama made numerous changes after the break, which is expected in a friendly match, but precisely then it becomes visible how stable the automatisms are outside the starting lineup. The goal conceded in the 47th minute is especially indicative because it happened immediately after the restart, in a period in which concentration must be at its highest. The second goal conceded, in the 67th minute, came after Panama had again built a two-goal advantage, which means that the host did not manage to fully close the match earlier. Christiansen can therefore be satisfied with the attacking rhythm and the reaction in the closing stage, but the defensive part of the game remains a topic that will have to be analyzed in detail before much more demanding opponents.

Rommel Fernández as the emotional point of farewell

Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez had a more important role in this match than an ordinary location for playing. In the match announcement, the FPF emphasized that this was the official home farewell match before the journey toward the final preparations, and the stadium was presented as the place where the national team wants to thank the public for its support during the cycle. Such matches often carry a dual character: on one hand they serve the coach for tactical checks, and on the other they create an emotional frame before a major tournament. With the 4:2 victory, Panama gave the crowd an open and attacking match, but at the same time showed that there is still room for corrections in the preparatory period. For visitors who are staying in Panama City because of sporting events and follow the football program around the stadium, accommodation offers in Panama City may also be useful.

Before the match, the FPF stated that Panama had not lost to the Dominican Republic in senior competition in the previous six mutual meetings, with five wins and one draw. The 4:2 victory continued that positive run and added to it a new match in a completely different context from earlier encounters. The last previous meeting, according to the FPF, was played in June 2021 in the qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar, when Panama won 3:0 at Rod Carew Stadium. This time the match did not have a qualifying stake, but it had a clear preparatory function and emotional value. Precisely because of that, the victory does not enter only the statistics of mutual meetings, but also the broader narrative of Panama's departure for the 2026 World Cup.

A schedule that quickly leads Panama toward much tougher tests

The official calendar of the Panamanian Football Federation states that after the duel with the Dominican Republic, Panama awaits a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 06 June 2026 in St. Louis. That match should be the final test before the beginning of the competitive part of the summer, after which follows entry into Group L of the World Cup. According to the FPF calendar, Panama plays against Ghana on 17 June at the stadium in Toronto, against Croatia on 23 June also in Toronto, and against England on 27 June at the New York/New Jersey stadium. This is a schedule that significantly raises the level of difficulty compared with the Dominican Republic, because Panama awaits opponents of different styles, physical profiles and competitive experiences. For that reason, every preparatory match, including this 4:2 victory, must be viewed as part of a broader process, and not as a standalone confirmation of readiness.

In that sense, Panama can draw clear benefit from this match: the forwards and attacking midfielders found goals, the team still kept its winning direction after conceding two goals, and the closing stage belonged to a player who is seeking additional space in the national-team hierarchy. Still, it is equally clear that against stronger opponents such lapses in concentration can be much more costly. The Dominican Republic twice punished open space, but against national teams such as Ghana, Croatia and England such situations can turn into even greater pressure. The victory before leaving Panama City is therefore useful, but not a final confirmation. Panama did its attacking job, fulfilled the result objective in front of the home crowd and gained material that can help the coaching staff in the final fine-tuning of the team.
