Portugal retained its perfect record in Group B3 with a five-goal win against Latvia

Portugal convincingly defeated Latvia 5:0 on 5 June 2026 in the fifth round of the league phase of the UEFA Women's European Qualifiers for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027. According to UEFA's official results list, the match was played in Group B3 of League B, in a round in which Finland simultaneously celebrated a 4:0 win in Slovakia. This meant that the Portuguese national team remained on a maximum 15 points after five matches and confirmed that it enters the closing stage of the group from the best position. Latvia, on the other hand, remained without points and suffered its heaviest defeat so far in the qualifying group. The 5:0 result confirms the major difference in form, attacking efficiency and competitive stability between the two national teams ahead of the final round of the league phase.

According to UEFA's match data, the fixture was scheduled at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota in Estoril, which gave the Portuguese side its final home appearance in this part of the qualifiers. UEFA listed Austrian Olivia Tschon as the main referee, assisted by Amina Gutschi from Austria and Noemi Hegedus-Barath from Hungary, while the fourth official was Sara Telek from Austria. UEFA's official results confirmed the final score of 5:0, but in the publicly available data used in preparing the report, all details of the goalscoring chronology had not been published in one official place. Therefore, the sporting significance of the match lies primarily in the result, the group standings and the qualifying consequences that arise from it. The Portuguese victory further emphasized the continuity of the national team led by Francisco Neto, while leaving Latvia only to fight to finish its campaign with as good an impression as possible.

Portugal controlled the group from the first round

According to UEFA's overview of all results in the qualifiers, Portugal opened the competition with a 2:0 win against Finland, and then defeated Slovakia 4:0. In the third round, Portugal beat Latvia 3:0 away, and in the fourth it celebrated a 2:1 victory in Slovakia. The fifth win, achieved against Latvia by 5:0, continued a run in which Portugal scored 16 goals in five matches and conceded only one. Such a ratio shows that the Portuguese national team did not build its advantage only on individual attacking quality, but also on defensive stability, which in qualifiers is often just as important as goal difference. In a group in which battles are also being fought for the play-offs, promotion and avoiding relegation, the ability to routinely collect points against lower-ranked opponents can be decisive.

Portugal's performance is especially important because UEFA's qualifying system does not reward all group winners in the same way as classic qualifiers in a single tier. According to UEFA's explanation of the format, direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup through the end of the league phase is achieved by the winners of the League A groups. National teams from League B, including Portugal, are fighting through the league for the best possible position in the play-offs, but also for promotion to a higher tier of European national-team football. This means that Portugal's victory against Latvia has sporting value on two levels: it brings an advantage in Group B3 and strengthens its position in the wider European ranking before the autumn play-off matches. In the context of a national team that has built international continuity in recent years, such a convincing win also carries additional psychological weight.

Latvia remained without points and confirmed a difficult qualifying cycle

Latvia suffered a defeat in Estoril that further deepened its weak qualifying record in Group B3. According to UEFA's results, the Latvian national team began the competition with a 2:3 defeat against Slovakia, then lost to Finland 1:3, and afterwards to Portugal 0:3. In the fourth round, Latvia was defeated by Finland 0:1, which was a narrow match in terms of the scoreline, but without any points progress. The 0:5 defeat to Portugal in the fifth round left it on zero, with three goals scored and 15 conceded in five matches. After the fifth round, UEFA stated that Latvia had been relegated from League B, which means that its final appearance against Slovakia can no longer change its status in the fight for survival.

For Latvia, the qualifying cycle showed how demanding competition in League B is, where national teams with different levels of experience, professionalization and squad depth are found. Although the result against Finland in the fourth round suggests that Latvia can close down a match and remain in a competitive rhythm for a long time, the fixtures against Portugal showed the difference in speed of play, finishing and the ability to create pressure through a larger part of the match. In two head-to-head matches with Portugal, Latvia conceded a total of eight goals and did not score any. Such a ratio does not speak only about one match, but about the broader challenge awaiting Latvian women's football after the end of this cycle. The final match against Slovakia will therefore have, for Latvia, primarily the value of assessing the squad and trying to finish the competition with a more positive impression.

Group B3 enters the closing stage with clear balances of power

After the fifth round, according to UEFA's Group B3 standings, Portugal has 15 points, Finland 12, Slovakia 3 and Latvia 0. UEFA confirmed that Portugal and Finland had already secured a place in the play-offs and were safe from relegation. Slovakia can no longer achieve promotion, while Latvia has been confirmed as relegated. In the final round, on 9 June 2026, Finland hosts Portugal, and Latvia plays against Slovakia. That schedule means that the top of the group still has competitive value because Portugal and Finland meet directly in a match that decides first place, while the other match will determine the final relationship between the third and fourth national teams, although the key consequences for Latvia are already known.

In terms of goal difference, Portugal enters the closing stage with a very strong advantage. Portugal's 16:1 in five matches gives the national team significant results capital, while Finland, after its victory in Slovakia, has 12 points and a goal record that is also convincing enough for a safe place in the play-offs. The first head-to-head match between Portugal and Finland, played in March, ended in a 2:0 Portuguese victory, so the return match will also have a psychological dimension. According to UEFA's summary of the fifth round, it was precisely the victories of Portugal over Latvia and Finland in Slovakia that set up the final showdown between the two most successful national teams in the group. Because of its maximum record, Portugal can travel to Finland with greater security in terms of results, but in qualifiers of this type the final position and overall impression can influence the draw and expectations in the play-offs.

What the victory means in the qualifying system for the 2027 World Cup

UEFA applied a league system linked to the tiers of League A, League B and League C for the qualifiers for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027. According to UEFA's explanation, European national teams have 11 direct places at the final tournament in Brazil, with the possibility that one more European national team secures a place through FIFA's intercontinental play-offs. The four winners of the League A groups will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the remaining national teams will fight through two rounds of play-offs. UEFA states that 32 national teams will enter the play-offs, namely 12 each from League A and League B and eight from League C. In that system, convincing victories do not bring Portugal automatic qualification for Brazil, but they do bring stable status and strengthen its prospects for a more favorable continuation of the qualifiers.

The play-off schedule further increases the importance of the form that Portugal is already showing in the league phase. According to UEFA, the first round of the play-offs will be played from 7 to 13 October 2026, the second from 25 November to 5 December 2026, and the intercontinental play-offs are scheduled for February 2027. The World Cup final tournament in Brazil will be played from 24 June to 25 July 2027. For national teams from League B, the path is therefore more complex than for the winners of the League A groups, but with its fifth consecutive triumph Portugal showed that it is using the group to build rhythm and confidence. Such an approach can be important in the knockout phase, where one weaker performance can erase a large part of the impression created earlier.

Attacking form and squad depth as Portugal's main assets

Five goals against Latvia continue Portugal's attacking pattern from these qualifiers. According to data from the Portuguese Football Federation before the fifth round, the national team had four wins, 11 goals scored and one goal conceded in its first four qualifying appearances, and after the 5:0 victory that picture improved further. Portugal has not failed to score in five matches, and in four of the five fixtures it scored at least two goals. This is an important indicator of continuity because in qualifiers against different profiles of opponents it is not enough to have one dominant match, but to maintain the level of play through several national-team windows. The victory over Latvia fits especially well into that pattern because it was achieved against an opponent that came with the clear task of reducing space and trying to avoid an early deficit.

The depth of Portugal's squad is also an important topic ahead of the decisive months. UEFA's list of registered players for the match against Latvia included experienced internationals such as Dolores Silva, Carole Costa and Jéssica Silva, but also younger players who have been receiving more and more space in recent cycles. Such a combination of experience and freshness is important for a team that must maintain competitive intensity even after the end of the league phase. In matches against opponents from the lower part of the group, dominance from the favorites is often expected, but it must be confirmed through a concrete result. Portugal did that very convincingly against Latvia and thereby avoided any uncertainty before the trip to Finland.

The final round brings a test against Finland

Portugal's next challenge comes on 9 June 2026, when, according to UEFA's schedule, Finland hosts Portugal in the final round of Group B3. That match has a different profile from the fixture against Latvia because Finland has also secured a place in the play-offs and has enough quality to make it difficult for Portugal to complete a perfect run. Finland beat Slovakia 4:0 in the fifth round, which kept it three points behind Portugal and preserved the possibility of joining the fight for the top of the group with a victory, depending on the regulations and additional ranking criteria. Portugal's 2:0 victory from the first round gives Neto's national team a good foundation, but the away match against a direct competitor will be the most demanding test of the closing stage. That is exactly why the result against Latvia has additional value: Portugal does not travel to Finland after a narrow victory, but after the most emphatic home confirmation of its form in the group.

For Latvia, the final round against Slovakia is an opportunity to try to avoid a qualifying cycle without points. UEFA has already stated that Latvia has been relegated from League B, but the match against Slovakia remains important for confidence and for the evaluation of the national team before the new cycle. Slovakia has three points and can no longer achieve promotion, but it will defend third place against Latvia and try to finish the competition with a victory. Such matches, although they do not decide the top of the group, are often important for national teams that are building continuity and seeking stability. In that sense, the closing stage of Group B3 has two different layers: the fight between Portugal and Finland for first place and Latvia's attempt to find at least a partial response in terms of results after a heavy defeat.

With a 5:0 victory against Latvia, Portugal confirmed its status as the most stable national team in Group B3 in the qualifying campaign so far. The result brought a fifth win in five appearances, strengthened its place in the play-offs and increased the pressure on Finland ahead of the direct meeting in the final round. Latvia, according to UEFA's Group standings, remained without points and with relegation confirmed, but it still has a match in which it can seek a competitive response. For Portugal, the most important question now will be whether it can turn its maximum group record into an advantage when the qualifiers enter the more demanding play-off phase. In a system in which the road to Brazil 2027 continues even after the June matches, the convincing win over Latvia is above all confirmation of form, but not the end of the job.
