Željezničar signs Amar Ibrišimović from Schalke: young Bosnia and Herzegovina international arrives on loan
FK Željezničar has officially presented 19-year-old Amar Ibrišimović, a central defender who will spend the 2026/2027 season on loan at the Sarajevo club. The young Bosnia and Herzegovina international arrives at Grbavica from Germany's Schalke, whose development system is known as Knappenschmiede. Željezničar announced that Ibrišimović will strengthen the competition in the centre of defence, while publicly available player profiles state that he can also be used as a defensive midfielder. The financial details of the agreement, as well as any potential option to purchase his contract, have not been disclosed. The loan is an important step for the player towards regular senior football, while for Željezničar it is an opportunity to enter a demanding season with a young defender who already has experience at two respected German academies.
The arrival was confirmed on 1 August 2026, one week before the start of the new season of the WWin League of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the schedule of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željezničar will host BSK at Grbavica in the opening round on 8 or 9 August. After his presentation, Ibrišimović said that he understands the expectations associated with wearing the Sarajevo club's shirt and that he is looking forward to his first appearance in front of its supporters. He particularly emphasised his fighting spirit, saying that the supporters can expect "a true warrior on the pitch" from him. His message fits the profile of a centre-back whose adaptation will be assessed not only through duels and aerial play, but also through his responsibility in organising the last line of defence.
From Tuzla via Sarajevo and Wolfsburg to Schalke
Amar Ibrišimović was born on 17 April 2007 in Tuzla and took his first developmental steps in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to Schalke's official announcement from May 2025, he began his football journey in 2018 at the FK Sarajevo academy, after which he was a member of the Colibri School of Sport and Tuzla City. He moved to Germany in 2023, when he joined Wolfsburg's U-17 team. At the Bundesliga club's academy, he played at U-17 and U-19 level, while Željezničar states that he was already training with Wolfsburg's first team at the age of 16. Such early involvement in senior training is no guarantee of later success, but it shows that the coaches recognised the young defender's physical and technical potential.
Schalke brought him in during the summer of 2025 for its U-19 team, and the club's announcement quoted then youth-team coach Norbert Elgert as describing him as a centre-back of suitable height, with good footballing qualities and character. Schalke's official information states that Ibrišimović is 1.97 metres tall, giving him pronounced physical attributes for playing in the centre of defence. During the 2025/2026 season, he played for Schalke's youth and reserve teams, namely the U-23 side. On the German club's current profile, he is listed as a defender for the U-23 team, and his arrival at Željezničar represents a temporary departure from a developmental environment into a league where points, pressure for results and the expectations of the public are felt from week to week. It is precisely the continuity of senior minutes that could be the greatest value of this loan for his further development.
What Ibrišimović can bring to Željezničar's defence
Ibrišimović's primary role is that of a central defender, but the possibility of playing in front of the defensive line gives the coach an additional tactical option. His height should be an advantage when defending set pieces, contesting aerial duels and protecting space inside his own penalty area. At the same time, the experience gained in German academies implies familiarity with systems that demand composure in possession from centre-backs, timely creation of passing angles and participation in the opening phase of attacks. The club gains a player who can increase competition among the centre-backs, while Schalke can monitor his progress in an environment where he will compete for senior minutes. Loans involving young players often succeed when the role is clearly defined, when the coaching staff have confidence in the player and when he is given enough time to adapt to a different style of competition. In Ibrišimović's case, an additional advantage is his familiarity with the language, football culture and atmosphere at stadiums in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The player himself highlighted that he knows Željezničar's history and that he has already played at Grbavica in the national-team shirt, so his period of adaptation away from the pitch could be shorter than that of most footballers arriving from abroad.
The youth national team as an important part of his development
During his presentation, Željezničar stated that Ibrišimović is a current Bosnia and Herzegovina youth international with eight appearances for the U-21 team. When his appearances in other younger national-team categories are included, he has collected a total of 19 caps. This continuity shows that for several years he has been among the players monitored by the national association as part of the future senior-team pool. Appearances for the youth national team provide a different kind of experience from club football, because players have to adapt quickly to new teammates, shorter preparation periods and opponents from different footballing schools. This is particularly demanding for a defender, since the automatisms of the last line are normally built through long-term work together.
Regular appearances in the WWin League could also have a direct impact on his status in the under-21 national team. Senior football brings more duels, greater tactical risk and more immediate responsibility for the result, experiences that are difficult to acquire fully in youth competition. On the other hand, the mere fact that he is arriving from Schalke does not guarantee him a place in Željezničar's starting line-up. He will have to earn it in training and matches, just like every other member of the team. This is an important part of the developmental picture: the loan only makes sense if the young player convinces the coaching staff through quality, discipline and consistency that he can assume real responsibility.
A new coach and a broader reconstruction of the team
Ibrišimović arrives during a period of change at Grbavica. In mid-July, Željezničar appointed David Muslera Rodriguez as the new head coach, while the club highlighted that the 40-year-old Spanish coach holds a UEFA Pro licence. According to his club biography, Muslera Rodriguez worked in the youth categories of Atlético Madrid, Leganés and Getafe, while he gained senior coaching experience in Lithuania. Such a professional background could be important for Ibrišimović because the new coach is well acquainted with the transition between academy football and the demands of the first team. Nevertheless, the final hierarchy in defence will be determined by training sessions, friendly matches and an assessment of which centre-back combination best suits the coach's playing philosophy.
Željezničar enters the new season after finishing the 2025/2026 championship in sixth place. The association's official table shows that the club collected 42 points from 36 rounds, with 34 goals scored and 37 conceded. These figures do not reduce the entire previous season solely to defensive performance, but they help explain why stability in the last line, control of matches and greater consistency in results are important objectives in the new cycle. Ibrišimović has not been brought in as the only solution to these tasks, but as one of the players expected to strengthen the squad's depth. His youth increases the room for improvement, but it also means that the coaching staff will have to manage expectations and workload carefully.
Grbavica as a test of maturity
Playing for Željezničar carries specific pressure because of the size of the club, its tradition and the intense relationship between the supporters and the team. Upon his arrival, Ibrišimović said that he was aware of the weight of the crest he would wear, showing that he understands his loan will not be viewed solely as a development project. The supporters will primarily expect reliability, determination and results, particularly in matches at Grbavica. For a young centre-back, this means that every risk assessment, lost duel or positional error will be more visible than in youth football. At the same time, strong support from the stands can accelerate a sense of belonging and help the player build confidence if he starts the season well.
The first opportunity for an official appearance will come very quickly, as the league match against BSK is scheduled for 8 or 9 August. It has not currently been officially confirmed whether Ibrišimović will immediately be included in the starting line-up, nor has the club published a detailed plan for his playing time. His readiness will depend on how quickly he adapts to the requirements of the new coaching staff and the automatisms of the defensive line. Since he was presented immediately before the start of the championship, every training session ahead of the opening round will carry additional importance. If he earns continuity, Željezničar could gain a physically strong and technically educated defender, while Schalke would receive a clearer picture of how ready its young player is for the next level.
The loan of Amar Ibrišimović is therefore more than a brief transfer story. It connects the interests of three parties: Željezničar is seeking quality and competition in defence, Schalke wants the player to develop through senior challenges, and the 19-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international needs minutes and responsibility that will turn his potential into measurable performance. His journey from Tuzla, via Sarajevo and Wolfsburg, to Schalke already demonstrates a willingness to embrace change and work within different systems. The next step will be to prove himself in a league where he knows the language and the environment, but where he will for the first time be directly exposed to the daily pressure of achieving results for a major club. The answer to how ready he is for that role will begin to take shape as early as the opening rounds of the new season at Grbavica.
