Ernest Poku leaves Bayer 04 for Bešiktaš: loan can turn into a permanent transfer
Ernest Poku is leaving Bayer 04 Leverkusen after one season in Germany and will continue his career at Bešiktaš. Bayer 04 confirmed on 27 August 2026 that the 22-year-old Dutch winger has been loaned to the Istanbul club for one year, with a mechanism under which Bešiktaš must permanently sign the player if certain conditions are met. The Turkish club announced on the same day that a transfer agreement had been reached with a conditional purchase clause. The financial details of the deal, as well as the criteria that would trigger the mandatory purchase, were not disclosed in the official announcements. Poku is therefore leaving Leverkusen temporarily, but his departure could become permanent before the expiry of his contract with Bayer 04, which, according to the German club, runs until 30 June 2030. The transfer comes at a time when Bešiktaš is seeking to further strengthen its attacking options for the new season in the Turkish Süper Lig and European competitions.
One-year loan with the possibility of a mandatory purchase
Bayer 04 states in its official announcement that Poku is joining Bešiktaš on a one-year loan. The key part of the agreement is a provision under which, if predefined criteria are met, the Istanbul club will be obliged to complete a permanent transfer. In its confirmation, Bešiktaš used the wording of a transfer with a conditional purchase option, while Bayer 04 specified that meeting the criteria would activate a mandatory purchase. The clubs have not disclosed which sporting, contractual or other circumstances must be fulfilled for that obligation to take effect, so no reliable conclusions can be drawn about the specific conditions. Neither the loan fee nor any potential future transfer fee has been officially confirmed. Therefore, the only certainty is that Poku is a Bešiktaš player on loan for the 2026/27 season, while his final ownership status will depend on the agreed criteria.
Such a transfer structure immediately gives Bešiktaš a new attacking option while also leaving open a path toward a permanent move. Since Poku is under contract with Leverkusen until the summer of 2030, any permanent transfer will depend on the separate mechanism agreed between the clubs. The official announcements currently provide no basis for assessing how likely it is that the agreed criteria will be met.
Bešiktaš had already announced Poku's arrival a day earlier
On 26 August, Bešiktaš announced that Poku had arrived in Istanbul for medical examinations and the completion of transfer talks after an agreement in principle had been reached with the player and Bayer 04. According to the club's announcement, he was welcomed at the airport by board representatives and supporters, giving the transfer a visible public dimension before its final confirmation. Board member Mehmet Sarımermer told Bešiktaş Dijital at the time that Poku was a player wanted by sporting director Önder Özen and coach Vincenzo Italiano. Sarımermer described him as a young player with European experience who fits into the coaching staff's plans. In a brief statement to the club channel, Poku said he was ready to get started and was looking forward to playing in front of the supporters. A day later, Bešiktaš officially confirmed the completion of the deal.
That sequence of events shows that the transfer was not suddenly concluded on the day of the announcement, but had entered its final stage at least a day earlier, when Poku travelled to Istanbul. A medical examination is a standard part of completing a professional football transfer, but the player's arrival itself did not yet mean that the deal had been formally finalised. Final confirmation came on 27 August, when both sides publicly announced the agreement. This brought to an end the brief transitional phase between the agreement in principle and his official status as a new Bešiktaš player. For Poku, it is also his second major international club move in only a year, following his transfer from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar to the German Bundesliga.
He joined Leverkusen from AZ Alkmaar with a contract until 2030
Bayer 04 signed Poku from AZ Alkmaar in August 2025. The German club announced at the time that the Netherlands U21 international had signed a contract until 30 June 2030 and described him as an exceptionally quick and direct wide player. Poku was born on 28 January 2004 in Hamburg, but grew up in the Netherlands and developed as a footballer within the Dutch system. According to Bayer's player profile, before joining AZ's academy he played for amateur clubs SV Robinhood and FC Amsterdam. Within the AZ Alkmaar system, he progressed from the second team to the Eredivisie and European competition, while Leverkusen was his first club engagement outside the Netherlands.
When Bayer 04 signed him, sporting director Simon Rolfes highlighted his speed, dribbling and ability to play in several attacking positions as qualities that could expand the team's tactical options. The club also presented him as a two-footed player, meaning a footballer capable of using both feet, which is important for changes of direction and cutting inside from the wing. Poku arrived in Leverkusen as an interesting development prospect who already had experience in the Dutch top flight and European matches. His profile corresponds to that of a modern winger who can attack space, accelerate transitions and create numerical advantages in one-on-one situations. Those very characteristics were again emphasised when his move to Istanbul was announced.
Five goals and five assists in the Bundesliga
In the 2025/26 season, Poku made 29 Bundesliga appearances, scored five goals and added five assists, according to data from the Bundesliga's official website. He was therefore directly involved in ten of Bayer 04's league goals during his first season in Germany. The Bundesliga also states that he has made 21 appearances for the Netherlands U21 national team, confirming that he arrived in Leverkusen with an already established status in the younger national-team categories. His league playing time, however, was not distributed evenly throughout the season. According to the Bundesliga's official overview, he did not start any of Bayer 04's final eight league matches, which is important context when assessing the decision to change clubs.
At the same time, Poku gained experience in the UEFA Champions League, and Rolfes specifically highlighted his performances in the Bundesliga and Europe's leading club competition in his farewell statement. Bayer 04's sporting director said that Poku had established himself as a quick attacker in Germany and Europe and that his performances had made an impression. Rolfes believes that, with his footballing profile, the player has everything required to establish himself in a strong Bešiktaš squad. That assessment shows that Bayer is not presenting his departure as giving up on the player, but rather as the continuation of his career in an environment where his main qualities could play a larger role. For the 22-year-old, the issue of consistent playing time is particularly important, as he is at a stage of his career when development potential needs to be converted into stable senior minutes.
Speed is the main characteristic of Poku's profile
Poku's most recognisable quality remains his speed. Bayer 04 described him upon his arrival as a player who combines acceleration, dribbling and directness, while the Bundesliga's official website recorded very high speeds from him in individual matches last season. Such a profile can be particularly valuable to a team that wants to move quickly from defence to attack, stretch the opposition's back line and create space for central forwards. Poku can operate wide near the touchline, but his dynamism also allows him to move into central areas, depending on the system and tasks assigned by the coach. Speed alone, however, is not enough for a permanent role at a major club, so at Bešiktaš it will be important to see how effectively he combines finishing, decision-making and movement without the ball.
For Bešiktaš, his arrival provides an additional option in the attacking rotation, particularly in the wide positions. Given that the Turkish club was also involved in European qualifying at the time of the transfer, squad depth has practical value during a period with a congested fixture schedule. UEFA had scheduled the Europa League play-off second leg between Kauno Žalgiris and Bešiktaš for 27 August, after the Istanbul side had won the first match 3-0. Poku's transfer was confirmed on the very day of that return leg, although the available official information does not indicate that he would be able to play in that match. His importance should therefore primarily be viewed in the context of the remainder of the season rather than a single European fixture immediately after signing.
Bešiktaš wants to take a step forward after finishing fourth
Bešiktaš finished the 2025/26 Turkish Süper Lig season in fourth place. According to the final table of the Turkish Football Federation, the club collected 60 points from 34 matches with 17 wins, nine draws and eight defeats, and a goal difference of 59:40. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor finished ahead of them. Fourth place meant that Bešiktaš remained outside the fight for the very top of the table, so the summer strengthening of the squad should also be viewed as an attempt to reduce the gap to the leading rivals. The arrival of a young winger with Bundesliga and Champions League experience fits that context, although a single transfer alone does not determine a team's competitiveness over an entire season.
At the same time, Bešiktaš enters the 2026/27 season with European commitments. UEFA data show that the club progressed through the Europa League qualifying rounds during the summer and reached the play-offs for the league phase. It won the first match against Kauno Žalgiris 3-0, with the return leg scheduled for 27 August. This means Poku is joining a club that must distribute its resources between the domestic league and the European programme, provided it qualifies for the next stage of the competition. In such a schedule, players capable of covering several roles across the attacking line can have increased value, particularly during the autumn part of the season.
Poku arrives as a player specifically wanted by the coaching staff
An important detail from Bešiktaš's announcement before the transfer was completed is the statement by board member Mehmet Sarımermer that Poku was wanted by both sporting director Önder Özen and coach Vincenzo Italiano. This suggests that the move is not merely a market opportunity, but a transfer that had the backing of the sporting department and coaching staff. For a young player, such a circumstance can be significant because it increases the likelihood that his role has already been considered within the tactical plan. Naturally, his actual playing time will depend on form, competition, fitness and the team's results, rather than simply on his status upon arrival. Nevertheless, the fact that club officials publicly emphasised the coach's desire for the player gives the transfer a clearer sporting framework.
Poku will now have to adapt to a new league, a different football environment and the pressure associated with one of Turkey's best-known clubs. Although he has already made the transition from the Eredivisie to the Bundesliga and played at European level, the Süper Lig brings a different rhythm, style of opponents and atmosphere. Bešiktaš expects an immediate contribution, but Poku is still a player of developmental age, so the assessment of his success will also depend on how consistently he can turn his physical advantages into performances over a longer period. Five league goals and five assists in his first Bundesliga season give him a concrete foundation, but in Istanbul he will have to prove that he can repeat or improve upon that output. Consistency will be one of the key elements of this new phase of his career.
Leverkusen leaves the door open only until the conditions are met
For Bayer 04, the transfer has a dual dimension. Poku formally remains a player of the German club during the loan because his long-term contract has not expired, but the agreed purchase obligation can end that relationship if certain criteria are met. This means that his status cannot be described as a conventional loan after which he automatically returns to Leverkusen. Equally, it would be incorrect to claim in advance that the permanent transfer has already been completed, because the official announcements clearly link the purchase to future conditions. Until the clubs disclose more details or those criteria are fulfilled, the financial and legal outcome of the deal remains open.
Bayer 04 also did not disclose details about why it decided to allow the player to leave after only one season. What has been publicly confirmed is Rolfes's positive assessment of Poku's qualities and his expectation that he can establish himself at Bešiktaš. Such a message softens the impression that the transfer is the result of dissatisfaction with his development, but it does not provide a complete answer regarding the sporting reasons behind the decision. The fact that Poku did not start the closing league matches of the previous season nevertheless shows that his position in Leverkusen's starting eleven was not guaranteed. A loan to a club that specifically wanted him could therefore represent an opportunity for a larger role and greater continuity.
A new stage of his career after only one year in Germany
In a relatively short period, Poku has moved through three different football environments: the development system of AZ Alkmaar, the Bundesliga with Bayer 04 and now the Turkish Süper Lig with Bešiktaš. Such a path brings experience for a 22-year-old winger, but also requires rapid adaptation. For Poku himself, the decisive question will be whether he can turn his speed and potential into regular playing time, consistent output and an important role in a team with high domestic and European expectations. If the conditions agreed between the clubs are met, the one-year loan will not end with a return to Leverkusen, but with a permanent stay in Istanbul. Until then, only what both clubs have announced is confirmed: Ernest Poku will spend the 2026/27 season at Bešiktaš, with the possibility that the transfer will become permanent under previously agreed conditions.
