Stellini hits back at De Bruyne after criticism of Conte's Napoli

Cristian Stellini, Antonio Conte's long-time associate and his assistant at Napoli, reacted sharply to Kevin De Bruyne's public comments about the period under the Italian coach. The Belgian midfielder, who arrived at the club in the summer of 2025 after ten seasons at Manchester City, said that Conte's style of play did not suit him and that he was pleased with the change on the bench. In a conversation reported by Italian media, Stellini said that in such circumstances one should reconsider the point of signing big, experienced stars if the impression of the play matters more to them than the results of the season. According to him, footballers with major careers behind them should serve younger players as examples of enthusiasm, professionalism and respect for the environment in which they work. The statement opened a new chapter in the debate about what Napoli expects from De Bruyne, but also about how Conte's two-year spell at the club should be evaluated.

Stellini's response came after De Bruyne, according to the Spanish newspaper AS, which reported the Belgian midfielder's interview with Nieuwsblad, described the problems he had in Conte's system. The Belgian said that Conte's footballing vision was very different from his own, that he never fully played in the position that suited him best, and that despite this he always gave everything. He particularly criticised the more defensive approach, mentioning playing in a 5-4-1 system and an output of one goal per match as insufficient for a team of such quality. De Bruyne admitted that the way the game is played matters to him, but also that he wants to enjoy football again. According to the same source, he also said that he would discuss the future with the club because, according to available information, he has one more year left on his contract.

A clash of two footballing philosophies

At the centre of the controversy is not only the personal relationship between the player and the former coaching staff, but also the clash of two footballing ideas. De Bruyne built his career as a midfielder who is at his best when he has freedom in the half-spaces, when play takes place high in the opponent's half and when the team builds its rhythm through possession, quick passing exchanges and attacking initiative. Conte, on the other hand, has often based his career on a solid structure, clear tasks without the ball and results-oriented discipline, with an emphasis on collective balance. Such an approach proved successful at Napoli in the first season, but in the second it raised the question of how to fit players of different profiles into the same team, especially those who are used to being the creative centre of the game.

De Bruyne's words can therefore also be read as criticism of a tactical framework in which he did not feel completely natural. But Stellini, according to MilanNews, which cites Corriere dello Sport, framed the problem differently: he did not question De Bruyne's career, but stressed that a player of such stature is expected to make a broader contribution than technical output alone. The message was clear: a player who arrives with the reputation of a European star brings not only passes, shots and experience from big matches, but also the duty to raise standards in the dressing room through his everyday behaviour. Stellini said that De Bruyne had conveyed neither joy nor enthusiasm to him about playing for Napoli and wished him that, in the rest of his career, he would find experiences closer to what he wants. Such wording further sharpened the debate because it moved the criticism from the tactical level to the question of attitude towards the club.

Stellini cited Modrić as an example

The most striking part of Stellini's comments was the comparison of De Bruyne with Luka Modrić at Milan. According to Italian reports, Stellini said that he was particularly impressed by how Modrić integrated into the Milan team, took on leadership and showed enthusiasm even in a system that was not necessarily lavishly attacking. In this way, Conte's former assistant wanted to emphasise the difference between individual dissatisfaction and professional adaptation to circumstances. In his interpretation, experience is not measured only by the number of trophies won or the size of previous clubs, but also by the ability to understand what the team needs at a given moment. Stellini also pointed out that professionalism includes the ability to make the working environment better, not to publicly judge the coach, management or style of play afterwards.

The comparison with Modrić carries particular weight because both De Bruyne and the Croatian midfielder arrived in Italian football as players with exceptional international reputations and long experience in the biggest matches. Still, their contexts are different, so such a comparison is not simple. De Bruyne came to Napoli into a team defending its champion status while at the same time trying to expand its attacking potential after a major transfer window. Modrić had a different role at Milan, but he served Stellini as an example of a veteran who, in his view, adapted to the demands of the environment without publicly shifting responsibility. It is precisely in that contrast that the broader question now being debated by the Italian public can be seen: how much should a club adapt to a great player, and how much must a great player adapt to the club.

De Bruyne's arrival had been announced as a major move by Napoli

Official Napoli announced in June 2025 that Kevin De Bruyne had signed for the club and would join them on 1 July of the same year, after ten seasons at Manchester City. At the time, the club highlighted his rich career, his Premier League, Champions League and other major trophy wins, as well as the fact that he had been one of the most important players of City's era under Pep Guardiola. At his official presentation in Dimaro, De Bruyne said that he had chosen Napoli because he was attracted by a competitive project, that he still had the motivation and quality to play at a high level, and that he was ready to adapt to Serie A. He also stressed that he was joining a team with quality, great ambitions and strong fan passion. The statements at the time sounded like the beginning of a project in which the experienced Belgian would be one of the leaders of a new phase.

That is exactly why the current disagreements carry additional weight. De Bruyne was not brought in as a temporary solution, but as a player who could provide quality immediately and help the team remain competitive in Italy and Europe. His reputation as a world-class playmaker raised expectations, but at the same time it also created the question of how he would fit into Conte's system, which is traditionally not built around the complete creative freedom of one midfielder. During the season there were matches in which De Bruyne showed his class, including the final round of Serie A against Udinese, when, according to Napoli's official report, he assisted Rasmus Højlund for the winning goal. But the broader picture evidently remained insufficiently convincing for the player himself, as can be seen from his later statements about the style of play and the need for talks with the club.

Conte's tenure brought a title, but also a tense ending

Antonio Conte arrived at Napoli in June 2024, and the club then officially announced that he had signed a contract until 30 June 2027. President Aurelio De Laurentiis presented him as a coach who could open a new chapter after the need to rebuild the team, while Conte announced complete dedication to the growth of the squad and the club. The result of the first season was very strong: according to Napoli's announcement, Conte was named Serie A coach of the year for the 2024/25 season, and the team under his leadership won its fourth Italian league title, recorded 24 victories and had the best defence in the league. That success remained the main argument of those defending Conte's work, regardless of later disagreements over style.

The second season did not end with the defence of the title, but Napoli remained near the top. According to the official Lega Serie A table, Inter finished the 2025/26 season as champions with 87 points, while Napoli were second with 76 points, ahead of Roma and Como. Such a finish secured Napoli a place in the Champions League, which is an important sporting and financial result for the club. In the final round, on 24 May 2026, Napoli defeated Udinese 1-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, and in its official report the club highlighted that De Bruyne sent a long assist to Højlund in the 24th minute. Captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo then thanked Conte for their work together and their achievements, showing that part of the dressing room publicly emphasised the value of the coach's tenure.

Still, Conte's departure did not pass without tension. According to reports by Italian and international sports media after the end of the season, the relationship between the coach and the club had for some time been burdened by differing views on the team's future. In such an atmosphere, De Bruyne's statements gained additional importance because they came after the coaching staff had already left the bench. Stellini's response is therefore not only a defence of Conte's style, but also an attempt to preserve the interpretation according to which results, work ethic and respect for the club were above individual tactical wishes. In footballing terms, the debate is taking place on the boundary between legitimate player criticism and the question of whether such criticism should be public.

What the public controversy means for Napoli

For Napoli, this controversy comes at a sensitive moment. The club finished the season as runner-up in Serie A and secured the Champions League, but it is entering a new period in which it must define the coach, the style of play and the status of the players who carry the greatest reputation and the greatest expectations. According to available information, De Bruyne has left open the possibility of talks about the future, and it has not been officially confirmed how the club will resolve his role in the long term. If he stays, the new coaching staff will have to decide whether to adapt the game more to his creative qualities or to demand greater tactical discipline from him within the collective. If it is judged that the visions do not match, Napoli will have to face serious sporting and financial questions.

The debate also has a symbolic dimension. Conte's era brought a league title and a return to stability after a turbulent period, but it also showed how difficult it is in modern football to reconcile the imperative of results, the aesthetics of the game and the status of great individuals. De Bruyne, according to his own words, wanted different football and more enjoyment in the game. Stellini, on the other hand, argues that at a club such as Napoli, a great player is also expected to set an example for others, especially when the season ends with an important sporting objective achieved. Neither side disputes that this is a footballer of exceptional class, but they differ in their assessment of what was most important for the team.

A debate that goes beyond one dressing room

The controversy between Stellini and De Bruyne goes beyond one player-coach relationship because it opens a broader question about the role of experienced stars in clubs that want to win and develop a recognisable style at the same time. Big names can immediately raise quality, attract attention and bring experience from the highest levels of competition, but they can also create tactical tensions if their habits are not in line with the coach's model of play. In Napoli's case, additional pressure came from the fact that the team had won the title a year earlier and was expected to remain in the fight at the top. When the results objective is partly achieved, but dissatisfaction with the way the game is played appears at the same time, the public gets a debate in which there is no simple answer.

For De Bruyne, the next moves will be important because they will show whether he wants to continue at Napoli under new conditions or seek a different environment. For the club, meanwhile, it will be crucial not to allow the debate about last season to overshadow decisions about the future. Stellini's comments made it clear that Conte's circle does not accept the thesis according to which the season was exclusively a missed opportunity because of the style of play. De Bruyne's words show just as clearly that a player of such a profile does not want to be merely a functional part of a system in which he does not recognise his own role. Between those two positions, Napoli must find an answer that will not be only tactical, but also managerial: what kind of football it wants to play and what kind of leaders it wants to have in the dressing room.
