Straka opened the Austrian Alpine Open with a round of 67, Zhou took the lead in Kitzbühel

Sepp Straka began his appearance at the Austrian Alpine Open in Kitzbühel with a round of 67 strokes, three under par, which after the first day left him among the players who can build an attack toward the top of the leaderboard. The Austrian golfer, one of the tournament’s main assets and the biggest name in the field, played a steady first 18 holes on the Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith course, but the opening score was not enough for a direct connection with the leaders. According to the tournament organizers’ report, Straka was in 25th place after the first round, while the top of the standings was taken over by China’s Zhou Yanhan with an excellent 62 strokes, eight under par. The tournament, played from May 28 to 31, 2026, is part of the DP World Tour calendar, and Straka’s Austrian appearance attracted special attention because it marks his return to the national open in front of the home crowd. In such an environment, a score of minus three can be viewed as a solid start, but also as a round that leaves the need for a more aggressive continuation if he wants to remain in contention for the title.

Zhou finished the day on top, Straka remained five strokes behind

The first day in Kitzbühel was marked by Zhou Yanhan, who, according to the official Austrian Alpine Open announcement, concluded his round of 62 strokes with an eagle on the final hole. Such a finish gave him a one-stroke lead over Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia, who opened the tournament with 63 strokes, seven under par. A group of players at six under par settled in behind the leading duo, which means that already after the first day the top of the leaderboard is very tightly packed and that the continuation of the tournament will be played under strong competitive pressure. Straka’s 67 strokes left him five strokes behind Zhou, but in the format of a four-round tournament such a deficit is not decisive if he manages in the following days to improve his accuracy from the tee and his efficiency on the greens. Ahead of the tournament, the DP World Tour emphasized that the course in Kitzbühel is a new host on the schedule of Europe’s highest series, so adaptation to its characteristics may prove just as important as the players’ form itself.

Straka’s performance also had a pronounced symbolic dimension. In its tournament preview, the DP World Tour stated that it was his first appearance on Austrian soil since 2018, when he played at the Shot Clock Masters, a former version of the Austrian tournament. In the meantime, Straka has grown into a globally recognizable name, became the first Austrian with a victory on the PGA Tour and gained the status of one of the most important Austrian golfers of the modern era. For that reason, his arrival at the tenth hole on Thursday morning, according to the organizers, gathered a large number of spectators, and the tournament itself gained additional sporting and media weight. Despite expectations, the first round showed that the home favorite will have to play very precisely in order to approach the pace set by Zhou.

Wind made conditions more difficult on the par-70 course

After the opening round, the organizers pointed out that the wind in the afternoon hours additionally complicated conditions on the par-70 course at Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith. That detail is especially important because the alpine location, altitude and changeable weather conditions can affect shot length, club selection and distance control when attacking the green. Bernd Wiesberger, one of the most experienced Austrian players in the field, after his round told the organizers that the day was demanding because the wind made judgment more difficult, while the ball at approximately 800 meters above sea level flies somewhat farther than in usual conditions. Such context further explains why even a result of three strokes under par for Straka should not be viewed as a weak start, but as a stable opening on a course that does not allow many mistakes. Still, leader Zhou showed that even in such circumstances it is possible to achieve a very low score.

Ahead of the tournament, according to the DP World Tour announcement, Straka himself stressed that accuracy from the opening shot would be especially important. He described the course as narrow from the tee, with thick rough and small greens, which means that an inaccurate shot can quickly put a player into a defensive position. Such course architecture favors those who can combine length control, good ball position after the first shot and reliable short-game play. In the first round, Straka avoided a major scoring drop, but did not find enough low numbers to immediately threaten the top. In the continuation of the tournament, especially if conditions calm down, he will need rounds with more birdies and fewer neutral parts of his game.

Austrian players in the focus of the home tournament

The Austrian Alpine Open 2026 has special significance for Austrian golf because it brings together several home players with different competitive profiles. According to the organizers’ report, the best-placed Austrian representative after the first round was Maximilian Steinlechner, who played 65 strokes, five under par, and took ninth place. Bernd Wiesberger opened the tournament with 66 strokes, four under par, which placed him in 17th position and one stroke behind Steinlechner. Straka, with 67 strokes, was in 25th place, while Matthias Schwab with 68 and Alexander Kopp with 69 strokes also remained within the framework of the fight to make the cut after the second day. Such a layout shows that the Austrian group is not relying only on the best-known name, but has several players capable of maintaining the competitive interest of the home crowd.

Wiesberger’s performance is additionally interesting because the DP World Tour, in its tournament preview, recalled that he is a player with nine victories on that series, including a triumph earlier this season at the China Open. After the round, he told the organizers that he was satisfied with his mental and playing stability, but that there was still room for improvement. Steinlechner’s round of 65 strokes is especially significant because he is a home player from Tyrol, which gives him an additional connection with the tournament and the crowd. Straka, although globally the best-known Austrian golfer in the field, was not the best home representative after the first day, but his position and experience leave enough room for a move upward. In golf, especially in tournaments with changeable conditions, one very good round can completely change the standings.

The return of the DP World Tour to Kitzbühel brought a new stage

The DP World Tour states that Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith became the 465th course to host a competition in that series. This is a significant fact for the club and the region because the Austrian Alpine Open 2026 is being played on a new stage compared with the previous edition of the tournament. The organizers point out that the course opened in 1989, and that in 2003 it hosted the Kitzbühel Golf Alpin Open on the European Challenge Tour, then an important stop for players who were building a path toward a higher level of professional golf. The return of a major international tournament to Kitzbühel is therefore presented not only as a sporting event, but also as part of a broader ambition to further position Tyrol as a golf destination. The tournament’s official materials also state that infrastructural investments were carried out on the course, including new tee positions and bunker zones, in order to meet the requirements of the DP World Tour.

Kitzbühel is best known to the wider sports public for winter sports, but organizers and tourism stakeholders emphasize that the region is also trying to present itself more strongly in the summer season. Viktoria Veider-Walser of Kitzbühel Tourism, according to the DP World Tour announcement, emphasized that golf is a strategic strength of summer positioning and that investments in golf and cycling infrastructure aim to raise the overall quality of the offer. Such context is important for understanding why the Austrian Alpine Open has significance beyond the result itself. For the DP World Tour, it is a tournament within the European part of the schedule, while for local organizers and the region it represents an opportunity for international visibility. A successful appearance by Austrian players, especially Straka, could further increase audience interest during the remaining days.

Straka’s status increased expectations

Straka arrived in Kitzbühel as a player with great international experience and clear performance expectations. In the player profile, the DP World Tour states that in 2022 he became the first Austrian with a victory on the PGA Tour, when he won the Honda Classic, and then added new victories in the United States of America. Ahead of the Austrian Alpine Open, the official DP World Tour website highlighted that Straka was the highest-ranked player in the field and the main focus of interest. The player himself said before the start of the week that winning the national open on home soil would be a special experience, especially because as a child he followed the Austrian tournament and watched professionals live. Such a personal connection increases the emotional value of the appearance, but at the same time brings pressure that in golf can have concrete competitive weight.

The first round did not bring an explosive start, but it also did not distance Straka from the tournament. A score of 67 strokes on a par-70 course means that he played below the expected number of strokes for the course, and a five-stroke deficit after the first day is still recoverable. The key will be whether he can find a series of holes on which he will convert good opportunities into birdies and at the same time avoid costly mistakes on the narrow parts of the course. Zhou’s result of 62 strokes set a high bar, but golf tournaments often change their dynamics after the second day, especially when the cut approaches and when pressure begins to affect the decisions of the leading players. For Straka, the second round will be an opportunity to stay within reach, and not merely to safely make it into the weekend.

Hole-in-one and a packed leaderboard marked the first day

Along with Zhou’s lead and the Austrian performances, the first day also brought one of the tournament’s most attractive moments. According to the organizers’ report, Brazilian Frederico Biondi Figueiredo hit a hole-in-one on the seventh hole, a par 3, from a distance of 132 meters. Such shots often become the visual highlight of the day, but in competitive terms the arrangement at the top of the leaderboard still carries the greatest weight. Zhou gained an advantage at eight under par, Gouveia remained very close, and a large group at six under par guarantees that the pressure on the leader will remain strong from the very start of the second round. For players like Straka, who opened solidly but not spectacularly, that means there is not much room for waiting. The tournament rhythm was already set low on Thursday, so every title contender will have to respond with a more aggressive score.

The Austrian Alpine Open continues with the second round on Friday, May 29, 2026, when the fight to make the cut will merge with the fight for positions near the top. Straka enters the continuation with a clear task: maintain control of his game, use the advantage of experience and reduce the gap to the leaders before the weekend. The home tournament brings a special stage, but also additional visibility for every stroke, especially for a player whose return to Austria was announced as one of the main sporting moments of the week. Zhou is deservedly at the center of the scoring story after the first day, but Straka’s result of minus three leaves enough room for the story of the Austrian favorite to continue developing. In Kitzbühel, the second day will show whether the opening round was only a cautious beginning or a sign of a fight in which the home favorite will have to chase from the very start.
