Iga Świątek defeated Magda Linette and secured a place in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros

Iga Świątek continued her Roland-Garros campaign without losing a set and, in the Polish third-round duel, defeated Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4. According to the tournament’s official website, the match was played on May 29, 2026, on Court Philippe-Chatrier, and lasted one hour and 25 minutes. With that, the tournament’s third seed secured a place in the round of 16, where she will face Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk, the fifteenth seed in Paris. The score does not show complete dominance in every game, but it clearly shows what matters most for Świątek on the Paris clay: the ability to remain calm in key moments, put pressure on her opponent’s serve, and close out both sets without the need for a tie-break.

The Polish encounter carried additional weight because it was a duel between players who know each other well and who had already met earlier this season in an important context. Ahead of the Paris match, the WTA recalled that Świątek and Linette had split their previous two head-to-head meetings: Świątek won convincingly in Beijing in 2023, while Linette came from behind in Miami in March 2026 to win 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. For that reason, the Paris encounter was not merely a formal step toward the second week of the Grand Slam, but also a test of how ready the four-time Roland-Garros champion was to respond to an opponent who had recently found a way to disrupt her rhythm.

Third round, but the stake was a place among the last sixteen

The official Roland-Garros match record states that the Linette – Świątek encounter was a third-round match in the women’s singles tournament. In the Grand Slam structure, that means a duel for a place in the round of 16, that is, among the last sixteen players. This is an important distinction because the 6-4, 6-4 result does not represent a victory in the round of 16 itself, but rather advancement to that stage of the competition. According to the schedule published by the WTA, the third round of the women’s singles was played on May 29 and 30, while the round of 16 was scheduled for May 31 and June 1.

Świątek arrived in Paris as the third seed and as one of the players with the strongest tournament pedigree on clay. In its tournament guide, the WTA noted that the draw included four former Roland-Garros champions, among them Świątek, who had won the Paris title four times. Although in Paris in 2026 she was seeded behind Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, her status at Roland-Garros still stems from a long series of major results on the same surface. That is precisely why each of her matches in Paris carries a special context: the result alone is not observed, but also the impression, movement, quality of serve, and control of baseline exchanges.

How Świątek broke Linette’s resistance

Both sets ended by the same margin, 6-4, which points to a match in which Linette was not without chances, but did not manage to maintain pressure for long enough. According to the statistics published by Sofascore, Świątek won 56 points, and Linette 43, confirming a difference that was greater than the final margin in games. The same source states that Świątek converted five break points, while Linette converted three, so the match had more turns on serve than might be concluded at first glance from the final score. The performance on second serve was especially important: Linette won a significantly smaller share of points on her second serve, while Świątek used precisely those points to create space for attack.

Linette managed in certain phases to extend rallies and force the favorite to play one extra shot, but Świątek had enough solutions in the rhythm and depth of her strokes. Her advantage was not based only on power, but on taking the initiative more quickly after shorter balls. When Linette opened the court, Świątek often managed to neutralize the pressure and return the point to a pattern that suited her better: a deep ball, a change of direction, and an attack on a less well-positioned opponent. Such a mechanism is especially effective on clay, where every mistake in the length or height of the ball quickly becomes an opportunity for a player who moves as aggressively as Świątek.

It was not a match without problems for the favorite. Linette showed why she had knocked out Jelena Ostapenko, a former Roland-Garros champion, in the previous round, and why her arrival in the third round could not be considered accidental. The WTA reported that Linette defeated Ostapenko 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, securing another Polish encounter in Paris. That victory gave her confidence, but against Świątek it was necessary to maintain a high level with almost no empty stretches. In both sets, the deciding factor was that Świątek had more stability in the closing stages and a clearer plan for points on return.

Świątek is looking for rhythm in Paris after a changeable start to the tournament

Świątek’s path to the third round was clean in terms of results, but not without warnings. The WTA reported that in the first round she defeated Australian wild card Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2, in exactly one hour. In the second round she beat Sara Bejlek 6-2, 6-3, but the WTA emphasized in its report that the match was not entirely straightforward: Świątek lost serve twice in the first set, and her first serve was landing at a very low percentage. According to the official Roland-Garros report after the victory over Bejlek, she herself spoke about the need to adapt to unpredictable balls and about remaining sufficiently patient in important moments.

For that reason, the victory over Linette has additional value. There was no large scoreboard gap in it, but Świątek came through a match in which concentration was required in long games and in which she needed the ability to return immediately to pressure after losing serve. This is especially important for her because the second week of Roland-Garros is usually played in a different rhythm: opponents are of higher quality, tactical preparation is more detailed, and every drop in serve or in the depth of a shot is punished much more quickly. According to the official score, Świątek finished her third consecutive match in two sets, which in the Grand Slam context is also important because of energy expenditure.

In her case, Paris is not just another clay-court tournament. In its tournament preview, the WTA recalled that Świątek already had ten WTA titles on clay, including four at Roland-Garros, and that ahead of this year’s edition she had an extremely positive win-loss record on that surface. Such a record creates expectations, but also additional pressure. Every victory without losing a set therefore simultaneously preserves energy and sends the message that her game is once again aligning with the pattern that has brought her the biggest results in Paris.

Linette left the tournament after her best Paris impression in the recent rounds

For Magda Linette, defeat does not erase the good impression from the first part of the tournament. Her victory against Ostapenko was one of the results that changed the look of that section of the draw, especially because the Latvian had throughout her career been an extremely awkward tactical challenge for Świątek. Linette thereby reached the third round and once again showed that in matches against higher-ranked opponents she can find brave, direct play. However, against Świątek she had to combine aggression with very precise risk control, and against a player with such speed and such quality on return, that is an exceptionally demanding task.

The statistical framework suggests that Linette had periods of quality resistance, but also that she was not able often enough to hold her own service games. According to Sofascore, Świątek won a large number of points on Linette’s second serve and thus created a constant threat. In practice, this means that Linette had to play under pressure even in games in which her serve would normally be expected to allow her an easier entry into the rally. When the first serve was absent, Świątek had the opportunity to attack immediately and open the court, and such situations on Chatrier quickly change the psychological balance of a match.

Still, Linette confirmed that her Paris result cannot be reduced only to the draw. Knocking out Ostapenko and then playing two competitive sets against the four-time tournament champion shows a level that can be important for the rest of the season. Her challenge remains consistency: against the best players, it is not enough to win several big points; games must be closed as soon as the opportunity appears. In this encounter, precisely that difference separated equal resistance from the possibility of the match going to a third set.

Next comes Marta Kostyuk, one of the most dangerous players on clay this season

With the victory against Linette, Świątek set up a duel with Marta Kostyuk, which carries a different kind of danger. The official Roland-Garros website states that Kostyuk defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-4, 6-3 in the third round on Court Simonne-Mathieu, in a match that lasted one hour and 39 minutes. Reuters, in a report carried by Channel NewsAsia, stated that the Ukrainian player extended her unbeaten run on clay in 2026 with that victory. In the same report, Kostyuk spoke about once again finding enjoyment in constructing points, changing rhythm, and moving around the court.

Kostyuk is the fifteenth seed, but her current form gives that match a weight greater than the number next to her name in the draw. Reuters reported that against Golubic she had to work through a demanding first set, in which the Swiss player saved set points and forced her into long exchanges, but that in the second set Kostyuk took control earlier. This is the profile of an opponent who can be uncomfortable for Świątek: strong enough to attack, mobile enough to withstand long points, and confident enough not to give up the initiative even against a player with a major Paris reputation.

In such a context, the victory over Linette was a necessary but not final answer to questions about Świątek’s form. Against Kostyuk, she will have to further stabilize her serve and reduce the periods in which she allows her opponent back into games. At the same time, her three matches so far confirm that even without a completely perfect performance she can move through the draw efficiently and without unnecessarily extending matches. At a Grand Slam tournament, that often becomes a decisive advantage, especially when entering a stage in which the gaps between matches are short and the physical and mental demands increase day by day.

The wider context of the women’s draw

The women’s tournament at Roland-Garros 2026 entered the second week with several important storylines. In its tournament guide, the WTA stated that the singles draw had 128 players, with no first-round byes for seeds, which means that even the highest-ranked players must win seven matches from the start to claim the title. The same guide stated that the tournament distributes equal prize money in the men’s and women’s competitions, and that reaching the fourth round brings 285,000 euros and 240 points. This gives Świątek’s victory an additional competitive framework because advancing to the round of 16 is not only a sporting step toward the title, but also a significant result in the rankings and in the season plan.

The third section of the draw, in which Świątek is located, according to the WTA preview included Elina Svitolina, Belinda Bencic, Marta Kostyuk, and Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko’s elimination by Linette removed one specific danger for Świątek, but it did not open an easy path. On the contrary, Kostyuk in her current form represents a challenge that demands a high level from the first game. For Świątek, the encounter with Linette was therefore also important as tactical preparation: she had to play against an opponent who knows her patterns, who did not retreat from exchanges, and who recently proved that she can surprise even in matches in which she is not the favorite.

Roland-Garros is often reduced to the ability to adapt from day to day. The surface changes with temperature and humidity, the ball bounces differently depending on conditions, and the big stadium further amplifies fluctuations in rhythm. Against Linette, Świątek did what mattered most: she avoided a third set, confirmed her passage into the round of 16, and kept control of her own tournament path. Ahead of the duel with Kostyuk, her Paris campaign remains tidy in terms of results, but the next obstacle should provide a clearer answer about how close she is to the level that has already brought her, at Roland-Garros, the status of one of the most successful players of her generation.
