Wolfsburg and Paderborn goalless in the first act of the Bundesliga relegation play-off

VfL Wolfsburg and SC Paderborn 07 played out a 0:0 draw in the first match of the relegation play-off for a place in the Bundesliga in the 2026/27 season, leaving the decision on top-flight status completely open until the return leg in Paderborn. The match was played on 21 May 2026 at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, in front of 27,800 spectators, and official competition data and specialized statistical services confirm that the home side had clear territorial superiority, but without any concrete effect on the scoreboard. According to Kicker data, Wolfsburg had 63 percent possession, 17 shots at goal and expected goals worth 1.49, while Paderborn remained on two shots and 0.10 expected goals. Such a ratio says enough about the direction of the match, but not about its efficiency: the home team pressed for most of the encounter, but the visiting defence was organized, patient and calm enough to withstand the most dangerous waves of attacks.

From the start, the match carried the weight of an encounter in which not only the result was being decided, but also the whole of the following season. Wolfsburg entered the play-off as the sixteenth-placed team in the Bundesliga, after a season in which they avoided direct relegation only in the closing stages, while Paderborn arrived as the third-placed club in the 2. Bundesliga and with the chance to secure a new return to the highest tier of German football. According to the Bundesliga’s official preview, the winner of the two-legged tie will play in the Bundesliga in 2026/27, while the loser will spend the next season in the second tier. Precisely because of such stakes, it was no surprise that both teams, in certain phases, played more cautiously than their league profile would suggest. Wolfsburg had to attack in front of their fans, but they could not afford to open up too much space. Paderborn, on the other hand, knew that a draw away from home could be very valuable capital ahead of the return leg.

Wolfsburg had the ball, Paderborn controlled the space

According to the official Bundesliga live report, Wolfsburg failed to break through Paderborn’s disciplined block despite greater possession and a significantly higher number of attacks. The home team built their play patiently, often trying to stretch the pitch and look for runs behind the last line, but in the final third they too often ran into a dense arrangement of visiting players. Paderborn did not have the ball at their feet very much, but their plan was not based on long spells of possession. The visitors closed the central corridors, maintained compactness between the lines and tried to avoid situations in which Wolfsburg could combine quickly around the penalty area. Such an approach was not attractive in an attacking sense, but it was effective in the key task: preventing the home side from turning their territorial advantage into a goal.

Kicker’s data further underline the difference between control of the game and real danger. Wolfsburg had 85 percent accurate passes and four corner kicks, while Paderborn remained on one corner and 76 percent passing accuracy. Still, the home side’s statistical superiority did not turn into a result because Paderborn managed to slow the rhythm at moments when Wolfsburg were looking to apply pressure in waves. Particularly important was the concentration of the visiting defence after losing the ball, because Wolfsburg tried on several occasions to immediately attack the space behind the first pressing line. Paderborn showed the maturity of a team that understands the specificity of a two-legged tie: in the first match it is not necessary to solve everything, but it is crucial not to allow the opponent to gain a clear advantage. In that sense, 0:0 was more than mere survival for the visitors.

The best chances did not change the course of the match

In their reports after the match, German media emphasized that Wolfsburg had greater pressure, but that Paderborn showed at several moments why they cannot be reduced merely to a defensive team. According to the agency report carried by Welt, one of the important situations occurred already in the early phase, when a defensive intervention by Jeanüel Belocian and the reaction of goalkeeper Kamil Grabara prevented the visitors from scoring. Such a start was a warning to the home side that Paderborn, although focused on a solid structure, could be dangerous as soon as space opened for a quicker transition. Wolfsburg then took more control, but the encounter did not turn into a one-way siege of the goal. Every home attack had to pass through well-positioned visiting lines, which reduced the quality of the final shot.

In the second half, Wolfsburg increased the pressure and increasingly got into situations from which a more concrete finish was expected. According to Welt’s report, Adam Daghim had two good chances, but Paderborn goalkeeper Dennis Seimen reacted successfully and kept his net untouched. Seimen’s performance was one of the important elements of the visitors’ result, not only because of the shots he saved, but also because of his calmness in managing the space behind the defence. Wolfsburg searched in the closing stages for a goal that would have given them a psychological and scoreline advantage, but they did not find enough precision. Paderborn withstood even those phases in which the home side played with more risk, and every visiting intervention in the penalty area further steered the match toward a goalless result.

A red card in stoppage time the only major blemish for Paderborn

Paderborn leave Wolfsburg with a result that gives them real hope ahead of the return leg, but also with one serious personnel problem. According to the official Bundesliga match record and Kicker data, Jonah Sticker received a second yellow card, and therefore a red card, in the fourth minute of stoppage time. This means he will not be available for the return match, which is a significant absence for a team whose first match was largely based on defensive discipline. The dismissal did not change the result in Wolfsburg because it happened very late, but it could change preparations for the second encounter. Paderborn’s coach will have to find a solution that will not disrupt the balance of the team, especially considering that the pressure of the home return leg will bring a different kind of responsibility.

For Wolfsburg, meanwhile, the goalless finish opened the question of efficiency in matches in which they have the initiative. The home side did not concede a goal and thus avoided the most unpleasant scenario before the return leg, but they did not make use of home advantage. In the play-offs, such a result can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, Wolfsburg travel to Paderborn without a deficit and any victory takes them to survival in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, the missed opportunity to create an advantage at home increases the pressure on a team that had already been under the burden of a relegation battle throughout the league campaign. Psychologically, Paderborn confirmed with the draw that they can cope with a top-flight side, while Wolfsburg must find a way to turn dominance into a goal.

The return leg in Paderborn decides the season

According to the official Bundesliga schedule and VfL Wolfsburg’s preview, the return leg will be played on Monday, 25 May 2026, in Paderborn, starting at 20:30. Official data state that the home side will be SC Paderborn 07, and the match is scheduled at the Home Deluxe Arena. Since the first match brought no goal, the calculation is simple: the winner of the return leg will secure a place in the Bundesliga for the 2026/27 season. If even after the second match there is no overall winner, the decision will be sought according to the competition rules for the relegation play-offs. Because of the level outcome of the first encounter, the return leg carries the character of a final in which most previous calculations are erased. Paderborn will have the advantage of home ground, but Wolfsburg still possess top-flight quality and experience of playing against stronger opponents.

Paderborn’s position is also special because of the club context. In its preview of the two-legged tie, the Bundesliga recalled that the club from East Westphalia secured the play-offs with a victory away at Darmstadt, alongside simultaneous results that enabled them to take third place in the 2. Bundesliga. For a club that has previously known how to enter the highest tier, this is a new opportunity to return to the biggest domestic stage. At the same time, Wolfsburg entered this phase after a season that was extremely stressful for a club of their ambitions. According to Wolfsburg’s official preview, the first match was scheduled at the Volkswagen Arena, and the return leg on Whit Monday in Paderborn, both times in the evening slot. Such a schedule further strengthened the feeling of a separate, closing football story after the league season.

The relegation two-legged tie as a mirror of the German competition system

The relegation play-offs between the sixteenth-placed team in the Bundesliga and the third-placed team in the 2. Bundesliga are one of the most tense elements of the German competition system. They bring together a club trying to preserve top-flight status and a club that has come within reach of promotion through the second-division season. In such a format, the first match often serves as a tactical measuring-up, especially when the difference in quality and financial strength is not enough by itself to decide the duel. Wolfsburg showed in the first encounter why they are a Bundesliga side, because they had the ball, more shots and greater pressure. Paderborn, however, showed why they deserved the fight for promotion: with organization, concentration and readiness to play 90 minutes in a demanding defensive rhythm.

The 0:0 result is, in that sense, a fair reflection of a match in which different needs collided. Wolfsburg needed a victory in order to reduce uncertainty and make use of home ground. Paderborn needed to stay alive in the two-legged tie and create a scenario in which they would have the opportunity to decide on entry into the Bundesliga in front of their own fans. Both teams partially achieved their goal, but neither got what would allow them calm preparation for the return leg. The home side can point out that they did not concede a goal and that statistically they were better. The visitors can emphasize that they withstood the pressure and that the decision moves to their ground. Precisely for that reason, the second match will carry additional emotional and tactical weight.

Defence in the foreground, attack under scrutiny

A brief description of the match as a goalless encounter with an emphasis on defence fully corresponds to what the available reports and statistics showed. Paderborn’s defensive performance was the foundation of the result, but Wolfsburg’s defence also had important moments in which it had to stop the visitors’ breaks. In encounters with stakes like these, goals are often remembered, but this time interventions, blocks, closing down space and goalkeeping reactions remained in the foreground. For Paderborn, this is confirmation that even against a top-flight side they can defend in an organized way without completely renouncing ambition. For Wolfsburg, it is a reminder that greater possession, more shots and better statistical indicators do not bring a result if the final action is not of sufficient quality.

Ahead of the return leg, both teams have clear tasks. Paderborn must repeat the level of discipline, but in front of their home crowd they will probably also have to show more going forward, especially if they want to avoid a scenario in which Wolfsburg keep the ball for a long time and wait for one mistake. Wolfsburg must find more variety in attack, because the first match showed that the sheer amount of pressure will not be enough. Coaching decisions, reactions from the bench and rhythm management will be decisive, especially if the match in Paderborn enters the closing stages without goals. After the first 90 minutes there is no advantage on the scoreboard, but there is a clear message: the defences passed the first test, and the attacks will have to provide the answer in the return leg that decides the Bundesliga.
