Cluj 2026: guide to accommodation, hotels, apartments, locations, parking and prices

Cluj, or Cluj-Napoca in everyday use, is one of the most important urban centres of Transylvania and a practical base for a city break, business trip, student commitments, medical visits, festivals and sporting events. Since the name Cluj can also refer to the wider county, when booking it is important to check whether the description of the property says Cluj-Napoca, a nearby settlement or a more distant location. According to information from Cluj Tourism, the county has a strong cultural, educational and tourist identity, and the city is used in practice as a starting point for urban attractions and trips around Transylvania. For travellers, it is therefore crucial to align the location, transport, parking and the real reason for arrival. Accommodation offers in Cluj should be compared according to overall practicality, not only according to the overnight price.

What to know before booking

Cluj-Napoca is not a coastal destination, so when choosing accommodation, the distance from the sea is not assessed, but rather proximity to the centre, the airport, university and hospital zones, parks, halls and festival locations. In the centre, the advantage is walking access to squares, restaurants, museums and public transport, but the disadvantage can be more expensive or limited parking. In more peripheral and residential areas, it is more often possible to find a quieter apartment or a property with its own parking, but then you should count on public transport, a taxi or a car. Accommodation prices are not uniform and change according to the season, days of the week, major events, cancellation conditions and whether breakfast, parking or late check-in are included. According to currently available information, before confirming a booking, you should check the final price with taxes, payment conditions, house rules and the exact location on the map.

The centre, Piața Unirii and the old city circle

The area around Piața Unirii, St. Michael's Church, Piața Muzeului and the pedestrian streets is the most practical choice for a first stay, a shorter city break and travellers who want to depend on a car as little as possible. According to Cluj Tourism data, St. Michael's Church is located in the central zone on Union Square and is considered one of the important Gothic buildings in Transylvania. The advantage of the centre is that many attractions can be visited on foot, with a large choice of restaurants, cafés, cultural venues and public transport lines. The disadvantage is that older properties may have a different room layout, weaker sound insulation or limited access by car. For guests arriving by car, it is especially important to check whether there is a reserved parking space or whether one has to rely on a public garage and street zones.

Central Park, Cetățuia, Cluj Arena and BT Arena

The area around Simion Bărnuțiu Park, the Someșul Mic River, Cluj Arena and BT Arena is good for visitors to concerts, sporting events and larger events, but also for guests who want to be close to green spaces. Cluj Tourism states that Central Park is an important city promenade and host to a series of events, including festivals and city activities. Accommodation in this area can make it easier to reach the hall or stadium, and the centre is often accessible on foot or by a short ride. On days of major events, there may be more crowds, road closures and pressure on public garages, so it is advisable to check traffic notices immediately before travelling. For a concert, match or festival, accommodation close to the venue can reduce transport costs and the time needed to return late in the evening.

Mărăști, Gheorgheni and the eastern part of the city

Mărăști and Gheorgheni can be practical for travellers for whom faster access to the airport, business zones or shopping facilities is important. This part of the city is not always the first choice for classic sightseeing of the historic core, but it can be a good compromise when accommodation in the centre is too expensive or when parking is more important than an address near the main squares. The advantage of the eastern part is better connectivity towards Avram Iancu International Airport and the possibility of finding newer hotels or apartments with easier car access. The disadvantage is that for an evening out in the old part of the city, one most often has to rely on public transport, a taxi or driving. Before booking, it is useful to check the distance from the nearest stop, because two addresses in the same neighbourhood can be very different in terms of practicality.

Zorilor, Gruia, Grigorescu and quieter alternatives

Zorilor and the surrounding neighbourhoods may suit business travellers, students, families and people arriving because of university or medical obligations. Apartments with a kitchen and washing machine there can be practical for a stay of several days, especially when the traveller does not want to tie every meal to a restaurant. Gruia and the area towards Cetățuia are interesting because of the views and relative proximity to the centre, but some streets are uphill and are not ideal for everyone who wants to tour the city on foot. Grigorescu can be pleasant for families and guests who want a quieter pace and walks along the river, while more peripheral parts often require greater reliance on a car or taxi. A lower price outside the centre makes sense only if the difference is not spent on daily transport and parking.

Hotels: when they are the most practical choice

Hotels in Cluj are most often the most practical for shorter stays, business trips, late arrivals and guests for whom reception, breakfast and predictable service are important. Larger hotels can offer conference facilities, luggage storage, clearer check-in and check-out rules and the possibility of issuing invoices. This is useful for travellers arriving by plane, who have meetings or do not want to arrange key collection with a private host. The disadvantage of hotels can be a higher price during periods of high demand, a parking surcharge or less room space compared with an apartment. Before booking, you should check whether parking is guaranteed or offered only subject to availability, because this difference can significantly change the arrival plan.

Apartments and private accommodation: more space, but more checks

Apartments and private accommodation can be a good choice for families, couples staying several days, digital workers and guests who want a kitchen, washing machine or separate living area. In Cluj, apartments are located both in historic buildings in the centre and in newer residential blocks, so the experience can be very different. The advantage of apartments is flexibility, especially for a longer stay, but you should check the check-in method, the possibility of late arrival, floor, elevator, heating or cooling, pet rules and parking availability. Descriptions such as “close to the centre” can mean a ten-minute walk or a significantly longer drive in traffic. The total cost does not depend only on the overnight price, but also on cleaning fees, deposit, city charges, cancellation conditions and transport.

Accommodation near the main event locations

For events at Cluj Arena, BT Arena and Central Park, it is most practical to look for accommodation in the western and central part of the city, but you should count on crowds and higher demand. According to currently available information from the organisers, UNTOLD has been announced from 6 to 9 August 2026 in Cluj-Napoca. Electric Castle, according to the organisers' announcement, has been announced from 16 to 19 July 2026 at Bánffy Castle in Cluj County, outside the city centre itself. For such dates, accommodation should be considered together with transport, because for a festival outside the city it is sometimes more practical to be close to an organised departure point than in the very strict centre. The event schedule, tickets, camping rules, shuttle lines and opening hours should be checked with the organisers immediately before arrival, because details may change.

Parking and arriving by car

Parking is one of the key criteria when choosing accommodation in Cluj, especially for guests arriving by car or planning trips around Transylvania. According to the Cluj Tourism list, public parking locations include Park & Ride on Traian Vuia Street, parking areas near the city hall, Piața Unirii, Piața Cipariu, Mărăști, Mihai Viteazu, Cluj Arena and BT Arena. According to data from the Cluj-Napoca city administration available at the time of preparing the article, for closed parking lots with barriers, payment is made at machines, and SMS is not a valid payment method for these locations. The same city source states that street parking can be paid by SMS, for example 30 minutes in zone I at a price of 4 lei, one hour in zone I for 8 lei, or one hour in zone II for 3 lei, according to the price list available at the time of preparing the article. Since parking zones, prices and rules may change, before arrival you should check the official city website or the signs at the location itself.

Park & Ride near the airport and public transport

For travellers arriving by car but not wanting to drive through the centre, Park & Ride Traian Vuia can be an important option. The city administration announced that the Park & Ride at Traian Vuia 149-151, next to Avram Iancu International Airport, has opened with more than 800 parking spaces, a bus terminal and public transport stops. According to the same announcement, the parking ticket allows the use of public transport on lines from the airport area towards the city, and tariffs such as 2 lei up to six hours, 15 lei for one day and 135 lei for seven days are listed, according to data available at the time of writing. Avram Iancu International Airport states that public lines A1E, 5 and 8 connect the airport with the central zone, with an approximate journey time of 26 minutes, while travel by car from the centre to the airport is stated at around 30 minutes. Before departure, you should check the current CTP timetable and possible traffic changes, especially on festival days, match days or during road works.

Accommodation prices: how to read them without making a wrong comparison

The lowest displayed price does not necessarily have to be the most favourable total option. A hotel with breakfast, reception and secure parking can be more rational than a cheaper apartment if you arrive late, travel on business or stay only one night. On the other hand, an apartment with a kitchen can reduce costs for a family or a longer stay, even when the basic overnight price is similar to a hotel room. During periods of larger events, prices can change faster than usual, and cancellation conditions can be stricter. According to available information at the time of writing, before confirmation you should check the final amount, the inclusion of taxes and fees, the cancellation policy, payment method, parking, heating or air conditioning and rules for additional guests.

Recommendations by type of trip

For couples visiting for the first time, the centre or the area between the old part of the city and Central Park usually suits best, because it allows evening walks and simple sightseeing. For families, a larger apartment in a quieter zone may be more practical, but only if it is close to public transport, shops and secure parking. Business travellers often prefer hotels with good transport connections, reception, breakfast and the possibility of issuing invoices. Festival visitors should choose according to the actual entrance location, return transport and the possibility of late arrival. Travellers with pets should explicitly check the property's rules, possible surcharge and access to green areas, because a label stating that pets are allowed does not always mean that there are no additional conditions.

Seasonality and when to book

Cluj has pronounced peaks in demand during major festivals, conferences, university periods and sporting events, and summer is especially sensitive because of the festival calendar. According to a VisitCluj announcement, in 2025 Cluj-Napoca recorded a record number of foreign tourists, 132,396, which is about 26 percent of the total number of tourists, and among the most represented markets listed were Germany, Hungary, Italy, the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands and Israel. This data does not mean that every period is equally busy, but it shows that the city attracts international guests and that quality locations can fill up quickly during peak periods. For a short stay during an ordinary week, it is often enough to compare options several weeks in advance, while for major events it is useful to plan much earlier. Before the final decision, you should check the event calendar, cancellation conditions and the possibility of changing dates.

Practical check before booking

Before confirming accommodation, it is useful to make a short check that can prevent most problems on arrival. First, you should open the map and compare the distance from the accommodation to the main reason for arrival: the centre, airport, hall, park, faculty, hospital or business address. Then you should check parking, because the phrase “parking nearby” is not the same as a privately reserved space. The third step is reading the latest reviews, especially comments about noise, cleanliness, heating, air conditioning, internet, elevator and communication with the host. Finally, you should check the arrival and departure rules, because a late flight, night bus or event that ends after midnight can be a problem if the property does not have self check-in or reception.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to choose the centre or a quieter neighbourhood for a first stay?
For a first stay, the centre is usually the simplest because more things can be visited on foot. A quieter neighbourhood may be better if you arrive by car, stay longer or value more space more than proximity to the squares.

Should accommodation with parking be booked in Cluj?
If you arrive by car, parking should be checked before booking. In the centre, guests often rely on public garages or street zones, while more peripheral accommodation more often offers private parking.

Which part of the city is practical for events at Cluj Arena and BT Arena?
The most practical locations are around Central Park, the western part of the centre, Gruia and the areas along the river. On event days, traffic changes and the return by public transport or taxi should be checked.

Is it better to choose a hotel or an apartment?
A hotel is better for a shorter and business stay, late arrival and reception service. An apartment is more practical for families, longer stays and guests who need a kitchen, washing machine or more space.

When is it best to book accommodation for festival dates?
For major events, it is best to book as soon as the dates and arrival plan are known. Before paying, you should check the cancellation conditions, because prices and availability can change quickly.
