Lošinj Island, located on the Adriatic, is now known as one of the most desirable tourist destinations, but the path to this status took decades. 140 years ago, on January 21, 1885, the island became home to the first recorded tourist, Dr. Conrad Clara, who arrived with his son Walter seeking the beneficial effects of the local climate. That historic moment marked the beginning of an incredible story of transforming a small island into an internationally recognized destination for health and natural beauty.

Lošinj: the island of vitality

Over the years, Lošinj has established itself as the island of vitality, thanks to its unique microclimate, rich vegetation, and innovative approach to sustainable tourism. At the end of the 19th century, Professor Ambroz Haračić, a meteorologist and naturalist from Lošinj, emphasized the importance of preserving the island's nature and climatic advantages. His collaboration with Dr. Clara led to the establishment of the Tourist Society in 1886, laying the foundation for the further development of tourism on Lošinj.

First steps in tourism

The Tourist Society and the Society for Beautifying and Reforesting Mali Lošinj, founded the same year, invested great effort in arranging the environment and infrastructure. In the first years, more than 80,000 pines were planted, creating a dense forest on Čikata, known for its promenades and natural beauty. By 1887, the first hotels were opened, among which the most famous was the "Vindobona" hotel. Its 13 luxurious rooms set the standards for future tourist facilities.

Climate spas and infrastructure development

At the end of the 19th century, thanks to the research results of Professor Haračić and Dr. Clara, Veli and Mali Lošinj were declared climate spas. This decision attracted numerous visitors from all over Europe, who came during the winter, then the popular season for health tourism. The spa season lasted from October to May, and visitors paid accommodation fees to enjoy the benefits of Lošinj's climate.

Adaptation to modern tourism

Today, Lošinj boasts over 23,000 accommodation capacities, ranging from luxury hotels and boutique accommodations to campsites and private apartments. It is particularly distinguished by the "Green Destinations" recognition, which confirms its commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources. Tourists are attracted not only by natural beauties but also by rich cultural heritage, excellent gastronomy, and diverse sports and recreational facilities.

140 years of history and the future of tourism

The 140th anniversary of tourism is celebrated through a series of events in 2025. In February, a documentary about Professor Ambroz Haračić will be presented, while March will bring a conference on sustainable tourism. May will be marked by the creation of the largest croissant in the square in Mali Lošinj, the promotion of the monograph "150 years of the Puhački Orchestra Josip Kašman," and numerous musical and stage events.

Connection between past and future

Lošinj has developed into a destination that connects history and modernity. From a spa for European aristocracy to a green destination promoting sustainability, the island is an example of successful transformation. Each year brings new challenges but also opportunities to preserve what makes Lošinj unique – its natural beauties, rich history, and tradition of hospitality.
