The RAAEWG (ENFSI) working group held a meeting at the end of August 2024 in Vilnius, Lithuania, with the aim of discussing new methods and techniques in traffic accident investigations, particularly in the area of digital technologies within vehicles. One of the most important aspects of the meeting was the analysis of data from “black boxes” (EDR - Event Data Recorder) installed in modern vehicles. EDR systems record crucial information such as speed, brake status, and gas pedal position immediately before a collision, making them an indispensable tool in accident investigations.
Use of data from motorcycles
Particular attention was given to the possibility of collecting and analyzing data from EDR devices in motorcycles, focusing on models such as Kawasaki Ninja and Yamaha. These devices record key data such as rear wheel speed, clutch position, and movement speed, especially in cases of sudden stops or motorcycle falls. For models like the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, data recorded immediately before the incident, such as engine RPM and wheel speed, provide investigators with valuable information for reconstructing the event.
Adjustment of forensic standards
As part of the meeting, the update of existing manuals and standards was also discussed to adapt them to new technologies, including the ISO 21043 standard, which sets global guidelines for forensic procedures. Expert Sanja Krajinović from the Center gave a presentation on the application of this standard in daily work and the challenges of its implementation.
Digital forensics and smart devices
In addition to vehicles, the investigation of the possibility of using data from smartphones like the Apple iPhone, which record information about vehicle movement thanks to built-in sensors and GPS systems, was highlighted. These data open up new possibilities in analyzing vehicle speed and location, which can be useful in accident reconstruction processes.
The meeting also elected a new leadership for the group, with Berislav Barišić-Jaman being re-confirmed as a member of the board, further emphasizing the importance of Croatian experts in the international forensic community.
Next steps
The working group continued its work on updating its manuals and recommendations to align with the latest advancements in traffic forensics. The next meeting is planned for early 2025, where the results of research and innovations applied to new types of vehicles and digital devices will be presented.
