Week of events in the Municipality of Dobrinj: theatre, yoga, concerts, a fishermen's festival and a memorial chess tournament
From 4 to 9 August 2026, the area of the Municipality of Dobrinj on the island of Krk will offer a diverse summer programme spread across Klimno, Soline, Šilo, Čižići and Kras. Over six days, there will be a children's play, two morning yoga sessions, several musical evenings, a traditional fishermen's festival and a memorial chess tournament. The programme connects the coastal villages of Soline Bay with the settlements in the interior of the Dobrinj area, allowing visitors to experience different settings in the north-eastern part of the island within a short period. According to announcements by the organisers and the island's events calendar, most cultural and entertainment programmes begin in the evening, while recreational and sporting activities are scheduled for the morning or afternoon.
As of 3 August 2026, some public announcements do not match in every detail. The original programme for the concert in Šilo on 5 August listed Joso Butorac and pianist Mladen Žmak, while the current Krk Events listing names Trio Crikvenica for the same time slot. For the fishermen's festival in Čižići, the initial announcement gives a start time of 8 p.m., while the updated calendar says 9 p.m. The tournament in Kras is described as the fourth, but the official chess records confirm that the 2026 edition is the fifth. Visitors are therefore advised to check the organiser's latest announcement.
„The Fox and the Stork“ opens the week at the cistern in Klimno
The programme begins on Tuesday, 4 August, at 9 p.m. at the cistern in Klimno, where Teatar Naranča will perform the children's play „The Fox and the Stork“. According to the listing in the Krk Events calendar, it is a thirty-minute performance intended for children aged three and above. The story is based on the well-known Aesop's fable about a fox who amuses herself at the expense of others and a stork who teaches her a lesson about behaviour, consideration and the consequences of one's own actions. The performance thus transforms a simple and recognisable plot into stage content adapted to the youngest audience, as well as to families wishing to spend a summer evening enjoying an open-air cultural programme.
The play was written by Vlatka Rubil, directed by Majkl Mikolić, with costumes by Valentina Ferlin-Živić. The set was designed by Rubil and Ferlin-Živić, while the various casts include Mathilde Vukosavljević, Vlatka Rubil or Matilda Nikić, and Gabriel Perić or Majkl Mikolić. Klimno is known for the Church of St Clement and its links with seafaring and shipbuilding, while the village's central area gives the performance an intimate character.
Morning yoga in Soline on two dates
On Wednesday, 5 August, and Sunday, 9 August, yoga with Dolores Prodan and the DOLIYOGA team is scheduled in Soline from 8 a.m. This programme has been held in Soline Bay for many years and has become a regular part of the summer recreational offer. According to an article published by the Bodulija portal at the beginning of the season, this year's cycle began on 28 June, and due to participants' interest, an additional Wednesday session was introduced alongside the Sunday session. The organisers stated that the exercises are adapted to beginners and more advanced participants, with particular emphasis on respecting one's own physical capabilities during high summer temperatures.
In the publicly available presentation of the programme, Dolores Prodan states that she has experience teaching hatha and vinyasa yoga, and the classes include warming up, breathing exercises, standing, seated and lying positions, and final relaxation. Participants are advised to bring a mat or a larger towel, water and light clothing, while arriving a few minutes before the start makes it easier to find a place and begin the practice calmly. The morning time was chosen to avoid the hottest part of the day, but the organisers nevertheless warn that everyone should exercise in accordance with their own health condition. As the programme takes place outdoors, any weather-related changes may be announced immediately before the session.
Soline Bay includes Soline, Čižići, Klimno and Meline, and the development of the settlements is linked to the former saltworks, shipbuilding and sand extraction, according to the local tourist board. Yoga by the coast is part of an offer that connects a summer stay with recreation and a natural setting. The two dates make participation possible both on a weekday and at the weekend.
Change to the announcement for the concert in Šilo on 5 August
For Wednesday, 5 August, at 9 p.m. in Šilo, a concert by Joso Butorac with piano accompaniment by Mladen Žmak was originally announced. The duo is known for a bel canto programme of Croatian and foreign songs, and in an earlier announcement of their joint performance, the Krk Island Tourist Board specifically highlighted the combination of Butorac's vocals and Žmak's piano accompaniment. Their collaboration has lasted for years, and they have performed at concerts in Croatia and abroad. Such a programme would suit a more intimate summer concert, particularly in a coastal village with a long musical and tourist tradition.
However, the current Krk Events page for 5 August in Šilo lists a concert by Trio Crikvenica from 9 to 10 p.m. The description presents the group as a distinctive trio from Crikvenica that has performed in the same line-up for more than thirty years, bringing audiences a repertoire focused on song, socialising and a cheerful atmosphere. As the date, place and time match, this is most likely a subsequent change of performers, although the reason for the change has not been made public. Visitors planning to attend primarily because of a particular performer should therefore check the latest calendar of the Municipality of Dobrinj Tourist Board or Krk Events on the day of the concert itself.
Šilo holds an important place in the history of the island's maritime transport. The tourist board states that on 12 April 1959, „Bodulka“, the first ferry in that part of the Adriatic, set sail from there on the Šilo – Crikvenica route. The performance by musicians from Crikvenica therefore also provides a symbolic connection between the two shores of Kvarner Bay.
Klapa Tramuntana in Soline combines tradition and contemporary arrangements
On Thursday, 6 August, at 9 p.m., Klapa Tramuntana from Kraljevica will perform in Soline. According to the official event announcement, the concert is expected to last until 10.30 p.m. The klapa's repertoire includes traditional songs from Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia, as well as popular compositions performed in klapa arrangements with instrumental accompaniment. The organisers point out that the arrangements have been designed to emphasise the vocal strength and emotional expression of the ensemble while maintaining a connection with the original tradition of multipart singing.
The programme fits into the summer calendar of the Dobrinj area, where evenings of klapa singing are regularly held alongside folk festivals and fishermen's festivals. The audience can expect an alternation of traditional chants and well-known popular melodies in the calmer setting of the bay, which places the emphasis on the voices and contact with the performers. The exact venue within the village should be checked in the local announcement.
Andrina Frleta brings a solo musical evening to Šilo
Friday, 7 August, is reserved for a concert by Andrina Frleta in Šilo, beginning at 9 p.m. Krk Events states that she is a singer from the Kvarner region who has performed at numerous festivals and events throughout Croatia and has won several awards during her career. Her performances combine the coastal musical idiom, festival songs and a repertoire adapted to concert evenings. The available event announcement does not specify who will accompany her or provide a detailed song list, so the programme's content can only be described in general terms.
Frleta also participated in regional musical programmes during 2026, including the Melodies of Istria and Kvarner Festival. Her performance takes place one day after the klapa evening in Soline and continues the series of programmes featuring performers connected with Kvarner. According to the current announcement, the concert lasts from 9 to 10 p.m.
Fishermen's festival in Čižići with the group Aurora
Saturday, 8 August, brings a traditional fishermen's festival in Čižići with a performance by the group Aurora. The originally submitted schedule gives a start time of 8 p.m., while the updated Krk Events page lists the programme from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. The event is planned for the parking area by the small harbour, with food and drinks available. Fishermen's festivals in the coastal villages of the Dobrinj area are part of a summer tradition combining gastronomy, music and evening socialising outdoors.
The organisers do not publish a detailed menu in the announcement, so it is not possible to confirm in advance which fish and other dishes will be served. Nevertheless, the event description clearly places it among traditional festivals with catering and music for a broad audience. The group Aurora is responsible for the evening's entertainment, and the programme is planned to last significantly longer than the week's other concerts. Due to the possible discrepancy in the starting time, arriving between 8 and 9 p.m. is a practical solution for visitors wishing to avoid missing the introductory part, after first checking the latest announcement.
Čižići is located in Soline Bay, and the small harbour and seafront area provide a natural stage for this type of event. The festival is the longest evening gathering in the programme because it continues into the early morning hours. Visitors arriving by car should expect increased demand for parking spaces in the immediate vicinity.
Fifth Dario Duda Memorial Tournament in Kras
The week ends on Sunday, 9 August, with the Dario Duda Memorial Chess Tournament in Kras. According to the programme submitted for publication, it begins at 3 p.m., while the official Chess-Results records confirm that the tournament will be held that day at the Kras Community Centre. Although the initial announcement described it as the fourth edition, the current tournament page lists it as the fifth memorial. The Fourth Dario Duda Memorial Tournament was held on 10 August 2025, confirming the continuity and correct numbering of this year's competition.
The organisers are the Municipality of Dobrinj and the Municipality of Dobrinj Tourist Board, the tournament director is Dean Duda, and the chief arbiter is Bojan Birk. The competition is played over seven rounds using the Swiss system, with a time control of ten minutes plus an increment of five seconds per move. The tournament is not rated, and the list published on 3 August included 38 players from several Croatian clubs, among them an international master, FIDE masters, a national master, experienced senior players and younger competitors. Such a range of participants shows that the memorial goes beyond an exclusively local character and brings together chess players of different ages and levels of experience.
Kras belongs to the inland area of the Dobrinj region, so the tournament complements the cultural and entertainment programme with a sporting event away from the coast. Under the Swiss system, registered players compete in several rounds, with pairings determined according to results. The final number of participants will be known after registrations are confirmed.
