Gordon arrives at Barcelona with Rashford's recommendations, and his purchase opens a new question in the Catalan attack
Anthony Gordon, the new FC Barcelona forward, revealed that before joining the Catalan club he spoke with Marcus Rashford and heard from him highly positive impressions about the dressing room, the atmosphere in the team and everyday life in Barcelona. Gordon and Rashford are currently together in the England national team, which is preparing for the 2026 World Cup, and their conversations carry additional weight because both are naturally linked to the position on the left side of the attack. Gordon, in an interview with talkSPORT that was carried by international sports media, said that Rashford spoke to him about the quality of relationships among the players, team spirit and practical details of life in the city. According to him, the messages he received only strengthened the impression he had already gained from conversations with people from Barcelona. The new player of the Catalan club also emphasized that he is looking forward to joining his new teammates and that he does not see the transfer as the end of the road, but as the beginning of the next phase of his career.
According to FC Barcelona's official announcement of May 29, 2026, the club reached an agreement with Newcastle United on Gordon's transfer, and the English winger signed a contract until 2031. Newcastle confirmed in its own announcement that Gordon had gone to Barcelona for a significant but undisclosed fee, stating that he played 152 matches for the club and scored 39 goals after arriving from Everton in January 2023. The clubs did not officially disclose the amount of the deal, but ESPN reported that it was an initial 70 million euros, with the possibility that the total value of the transfer with bonuses could exceed 80 million euros. Such a financial framework makes Gordon one of Barcelona's most important deals ahead of the 2026/27 season, but it also intensifies the debate about how the club will allocate minutes and resources in attack.
Rashford spoke to him about the dressing room, the city and the way of life
Gordon's statements are particularly interesting because they come from a player who is entering Barcelona through the advice of a national-team teammate, but also a potential rival for a place in the club and national-team attack. Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, and according to the Catalan club's official announcement his loan agreement runs until June 30, 2026, and includes a purchase option. Gordon said that Rashford told him that relationships in the dressing room are good, that the team has a strong collective spirit and that it is possible to live and work well in Barcelona. He added that Rashford also gave him concrete advice about the city, including general information about life and possible accommodation. Such a conversation shows that Rashford, despite his own uncertain situation, did not act closed toward the arrival of a new English forward.
According to the statements from the talkSPORT interview, Gordon described Rashford as a thoughtful and approachable person who wanted to help him during the transition period. For a player going to La Liga for the first time, that is not an insignificant detail, because adaptation in Barcelona includes not only the football system, but also the language, the city, the rhythm of the club and different media pressure. In recent years, Barcelona has been building its attack around speed, width and high intensity, and Gordon fits that profile as a player who can attack space, enter the finishing phase and work without the ball. According to FC Barcelona's official presentation, the club sees him as one of the most talented and hardest-working wingers in European football, while noting that he can also play more centrally in attack. It is precisely that versatility that should help him in competition in which established names already exist.
A transfer that changes the hierarchy on the left side of the attack
Gordon's arrival cannot be viewed separately from the question of Rashford's future. On July 23, 2025, Barcelona officially announced an agreement with Manchester United on Rashford's loan until June 30, 2026, with an option to buy the English forward. At the beginning of April 2026, ESPN reported that Barcelona had a deadline of June 15 to activate the option worth 30 million euros, which means that the key decision is approaching at a time when both Rashford and Gordon are in the middle of preparations with the national team. According to the available information, by June 7, 2026, Barcelona had not officially confirmed that it had activated that option. For that reason, Rashford's status remains open: formally he is a Barcelona loan player until the end of June, but his long-term belonging to the club depends on an agreement between Barcelona and Manchester United.
Gordon's arrival also increases competition in the position where Rashford often sought space during the season. Both players can play from the left side, move inside and attack the last line, and both are candidates in the England national team for minutes in a similar area. That does not automatically mean that there is no longer room for Rashford at Barcelona, but it changes the negotiating context. If the club now already has Gordon signed long-term, the sporting management must assess whether it is sustainable to invest additionally in Rashford, especially with the existing competition in attack. According to LaLiga's documentation on the squad cost limit, clubs in the Spanish championship must include salaries, bonuses, transfer costs, commissions and amortization in sporting expenses, so every new decision on contracts has a regulatory dimension as well, not only a sporting one.
Barcelona sees him as a player for the present and the future
Barcelona's official presentation emphasized Gordon's path from Everton to Newcastle and the fact that he established himself in the Premier League as a high-intensity player. Barcelona highlighted that he made his debut for Everton's first team in a European match at the age of 16, that he later matured in the Premier League and that at Newcastle he made a step forward toward Champions League level. The club also stated that in one of his seasons with Newcastle he had a double-digit contribution in goals and assists and that he was named player of the season, which shows why Barcelona considered him an important investment. Newcastle, meanwhile, in its official farewell recalled that Gordon became a significant part of the team in three and a half years and that the departure was completed for an undisclosed fee that the club described as substantial. In that way, the transfer was presented as a deal with sporting and economic weight for both sides.
For Barcelona, it is also important that Gordon arrives at an age at which he should be entering his playing peak. He was born on February 24, 2001, and at the time of the transfer he is 25 years old, with enough experience from the Premier League and the Champions League, but also room for further development. Hansi Flick can get in him a winger who does not wait for play only by the touchline, but can attack depth, press the opposing defence and offer an alternative in matches in which Barcelona must speed up the flow of the ball toward the finishing phase. Given that the club officially states that Gordon can also play in the centre of the attack, his arrival can have broader tactical significance than the battle for the left wing alone. This is particularly important in a long season in which rotations, injuries and adjustments to different opponents are expected.
The national team as a shared framework and a test of form
Gordon's statements about Rashford were made during a period when both are in the focus of the England national team. According to England Football's official report, England beat New Zealand 1:0 in Tampa on June 6, 2026, in a warm-up match for the World Cup, and the only goal was scored by Harry Kane. Rashford started the match wearing number 11, while Gordon was among the substitutes with number 18 and came on in the second half, when head coach Thomas Tuchel changed the entire team. The official report states that Gordon was involved late in the match in moves with Jude Bellingham and Ivan Toney and that he had a shot saved by the New Zealand goalkeeper. According to the English association, the match served as part of preparations in difficult conditions in Florida, more as a check of form and distribution of minutes than as a match of competitive rhythm.
According to the official schedule, England will also play Costa Rica in Orlando before the start of the World Cup, and their first match in Group L awaits them on June 17 against Croatia in Arlington. Ghana and Panama are also in the same group, which means that Gordon and Rashford will have to balance cooperation and the fight for the same minutes in the national team. In his statements after the transfer, Gordon said that he does not attach too much importance to shirt numbers and that several players in the England team have the quality to be in the starting lineup. His priority, as he said, remains proving himself on the pitch and finding rhythm after a period in which he did not play continuously. That part of the preparation is also important for Barcelona, because after the World Cup the club expects a player ready for quick integration into a new environment.
Rashford's decision is still not closed
Rashford's case remains the most sensitive part of this story. The official agreement between Barcelona and Manchester United from July 2025 clearly stated a loan until June 30, 2026, and a purchase option, but it did not publicly disclose all financial and procedural details. ESPN reported that the deadline for activating the option is June 15 and that its value is 30 million euros, but by June 7 there had been no official announcement that Barcelona had used that option. If the club decides on a permanent transfer, Rashford would remain part of an attack that now also includes Gordon, so the question of minutes and roles would open already during preparations. If the option is not activated, Manchester United and Barcelona would have to look for another solution, whether through new negotiations, a new loan or the player's return to the English club.
For Rashford, the situation is not simple because of the national-team context either. While preparing for the World Cup, his club future remains a topic that directly overlaps with the arrival of his national-team teammate at the club where he spent the season. Still, his behaviour toward Gordon, at least according to what Barcelona's new player publicly said, suggests a professional relationship and a willingness to help. For Barcelona, such a dynamic can be useful if both of them end up in the same dressing room long-term, but only on the condition that the sporting hierarchy is clearly established. Otherwise, the club could end up with a surplus of similar profiles in attack, which would open new questions about rotation, wages and player registration.
An ambition that goes beyond the transfer itself
In his first statements after the transfer, Gordon emphasized that moving to Barcelona is the fulfilment of a long-standing goal, but also that he is not satisfied merely by the fact that he will wear the shirt of one of Europe's biggest clubs. According to the interview carried by Goal.com, Gordon said that he wants to win trophies and that he considers his arrival at Barcelona the beginning of a new level of his career. Such a tone is important for a player whose transfer is measured in large sums and from whom quick adaptation will be expected. Barcelona is not bringing Gordon in as a development project without pressure, but as a reinforcement who should immediately raise competition and give the team new energy on the wing. That is why his ability to accept tactical demands, linguistic and cultural adaptation and comparisons with other forwards will be just as important as statistics.
At this moment, only two things are clear: Gordon is officially a Barcelona player, and Rashford's permanent future at the Catalan club has not yet been confirmed. Their conversation in the England camp shows that football moves often take place through informal player contacts as well, not only through negotiations between clubs, agents and financial documents. By bringing in Gordon, Barcelona has gained a new attacking solution, but at the same time it has increased the need for precise decisions about the squad for the 2026/27 season. Rashford, who has already got to know the club, the city and the demands of Barcelona's dressing room, now awaits an outcome that could also determine the next phase of his career. Until an official decision is made, Gordon's words remain the clearest public signal that Rashford, regardless of his own uncertainty, gave his new teammate a positive image of the club he is joining with great ambitions.
