Arsenal close to signing Christos Tzolis, but key agreement with Club Brugge has not yet been reached
Arsenal have taken an important step in their attempt to sign Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, but the transfer of the Greek winger had still not been officially completed on 16 July 2026. According to a report by FootballTransfers, citing transfer journalist Nicola Schira, the 24-year-old footballer has accepted the personal terms of a five-year contract with the London club. The same source states that his annual salary would amount to approximately three million euros, but Arsenal and Club Brugge still need to reach a final agreement on the transfer fee and the other terms of the deal. Neither club has announced that the transfer has been agreed, and Tzolis is not included on Arsenal's official list of incoming transfers for the 2026/27 season. The current situation can therefore be described as an advanced stage of negotiations rather than a completed deal.
According to several media reports, the Belgian club are asking approximately 40 million euros for Tzolis, reflecting his exceptional statistical season, age, international status and long-term contract. Club Brugge extended their agreement with the Greek attacker until the summer of 2029 in July 2025, so they are under no immediate pressure to sell him. That contractual position gives the Belgian champions strong negotiating leverage and means that Arsenal, should they wish to complete the deal quickly, will probably not be able to count on a significant reduction in the initial asking price. According to the available information, personal terms are no longer the main obstacle, but the most important part of the negotiations remains: an agreement between the clubs on the fixed transfer fee, bonuses, payment schedule and any additional clauses.
Trossard's departure opened up space on the left side of the attack
Arsenal's interest in Tzolis gained additional significance following the confirmed departure of Leandro Trossard to Beşiktaş. The London club announced on 15 July that the Belgian international had completed a permanent transfer to the Istanbul club, bringing his three-and-a-half-year spell in north London to an end. According to a Reuters report, Beşiktaş announced that the deal was worth 18 million euros, payable in six equal instalments over three years, while Trossard signed a three-season contract with an option for an additional year. In their official farewell statement, Arsenal said that the 31-year-old had made 174 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 36 goals and recording 34 assists.
Trossard's departure does not mean that Arsenal have no other options on the left side of the attack, but it removes one of the most experienced and tactically adaptable players from Mikel Arteta's rotation. The Belgian could play on both wings, behind the striker and as a false nine, and he frequently demonstrated his importance by coming off the bench and making a direct contribution during decisive stages of matches. Reuters states that in the 2025/26 league season, in which Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, he scored six goals and provided six assists in 31 league appearances. Tzolis would therefore join a team that are not merely seeking a positional replacement, but also a player capable of immediately creating goals, chances and competition across the attacking line.
According to reports in the British media, Arsenal view Tzolis as one of the solutions for the left wing, while the club's pursuit of other attacking reinforcements is being conducted separately. This is an important distinction because his potential arrival would not necessarily mean the end of Arsenal's activity in the market. A team defending the Premier League title and once again targeting the latter stages of the Champions League need squad depth, particularly during seasons containing a large number of club and international fixtures. Tzolis's age and experience in several European leagues fit the profile of a player who still has room for development but already has sufficient senior minutes behind him not to be treated merely as a project for the future.
Figures from Belgium explain the high price
The most convincing argument in favour of Arsenal's interest is Tzolis's output at Club Brugge. The Belgian club's official website states that during the 2025/26 season he played 36 domestic league matches, starting 34 of them, and scored 17 goals while registering 23 assists. This means that he was directly involved in 40 goals in the league competition alone, while playing more than 3,000 minutes. Several transfer and statistical sources list totals of 22 goals and 29 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions. Although methodologies for recording assists sometimes differ, all available data point to the same conclusion: Tzolis has completed a season in which he was one of the most productive wingers in European club football.
His output was not a sudden flash limited to a few months. When extending his contract in July 2025, Club Brugge announced that Tzolis had played 56 matches during his first season for the club, producing 21 goals and 16 assists. Over two seasons in Belgium, he has therefore established a level of consistency that significantly changes the assessment of his potential compared with the period he spent in England as a teenager. On his official profile, the club describe him as an important attacking force, capable both of finishing moves and creating chances for teammates. It is precisely that combination of scoring and creativity that is particularly valuable to Arsenal, because Arteta's team demand far more from their wingers than simply maintaining width near the touchline.
Tzolis is primarily a left winger and his right foot is stronger, enabling him to move inside and attack spaces for a shot or a final pass. His statistics in Belgium suggest that he is not merely a player who depends on transitions and open space, but an attacker who can consistently produce an end product over the course of a long season. By signing him, Arsenal would acquire a different profile from Trossard: younger, more explosive and more naturally focused on playing from the left. At the same time, the transition from the Belgian league to the Premier League would bring considerably greater demands in terms of decision-making speed, pressing intensity and duels, so an adaptation period would be realistic even with his impressive figures.
Return to the Premier League after a difficult period at Norwich
A possible transfer to Arsenal would represent a return to English football for Tzolis five years after he joined Norwich City. In August 2021, the Premier League announced that Norwich had signed the then 19-year-old Greek international from PAOK on a five-year contract. During the previous season for the Thessaloniki club, he had scored 16 goals and recorded ten assists in all competitions, which led to him being regarded as one of the most exciting young attackers of his generation. However, his first spell in England did not develop as expected: the official Premier League profile records 14 appearances without a goal or an assist during the 2021/22 league season, in which Norwich were relegated from the top flight.
That beginning to his career in England is an important part of the story today, but it does not necessarily provide a reliable measure of the player Tzolis has become. He arrived at Norwich as a very young footballer, joining a team battling relegation and changing their technical direction during the season. Limited playing time was followed by loan spells at Twente and Fortuna Düsseldorf, and it was his period in Germany that became the turning point. In their player biography, Club Brugge state that he produced 24 goals and ten assists in 37 matches for Fortuna during the 2023/24 season. That performance restored his confidence and market value and led to his transfer to Belgium in the summer of 2024.
A return to the Premier League would therefore be a test of his complete evolution. Compared with the player who arrived at Norwich, he now has experience of failure, loan spells, rebuilding his career, European matches and two productive seasons at a club that regularly operate under pressure to win trophies. Arsenal would not be buying teenage potential, but a 24-year-old international entering a period in which attackers are expected to deliver consistent performances at the highest level. Nevertheless, the fact that his first encounter with the Premier League was difficult will remain relevant when assessing the risk, particularly with a transfer fee of approximately 40 million euros.
Club Brugge can negotiate without urgency
Club Brugge signed Tzolis following his best season in Germany and then further protected their investment with a contract running until 2029. Such a strategy allows the Belgian club to demand a price from interested buyers that reflects not only his performances to date but also his future value. For Arsenal, this is a classic situation in which an agreement with the player can accelerate negotiations but cannot replace an agreement with the club holding his registration rights. Personal terms generally become relevant only when the selling club accepts the transfer structure or allows negotiations to enter their final stage.
A fee of approximately 40 million euros would be many times greater than the amount for which Tzolis arrived in Bruges, demonstrating how much his value has increased in only two seasons. For the Belgian club, a sale would represent significant revenue, but also a serious sporting loss that would require them to find a new leading source of attacking production. Club Brugge can therefore be expected to insist on a large guaranteed portion of the fee and achievable bonuses, rather than a package whose final value would depend on difficult conditions. It has not currently been officially confirmed whether the clubs have already agreed on the basic amount or are only discussing the payment model.
Arsenal, on the other hand, must assess how transferable Tzolis's production is to England's most demanding competition and what role he would have within the existing hierarchy. A high transfer fee generally implies an expectation of regular playing time, but competition for the wide positions remains strong in a team challenging for the biggest trophies. His ability to cover several attacking roles could increase the number of opportunities available to him, but the primary purpose of the transfer would be to strengthen the left side following Trossard's departure. In that sense, the negotiations are not only a matter of price, but also Arsenal's assessment of how quickly Tzolis can become a reliable member of the starting line-up or the most important rotation group.
What still needs to be resolved before an official announcement
Even if the personal terms have genuinely been fully agreed, several mandatory steps still separate Tzolis from an official presentation in London. Arsenal and Club Brugge must sign a transfer agreement, after which the player would need to undergo medical examinations and complete the contractual documentation. Registration with the relevant domestic football authorities and announcements by both clubs would then follow. Until those steps are completed, the transfer could change or collapse due to differences over the fee, the payment schedule, the medical results or new offers from other clubs.

The official websites of Arsenal and Club Brugge had not announced an agreement over his transfer by 16 July. The most accurate wording is therefore that Arsenal have made progress and moved closer to the player, but have not yet completed negotiations with the Belgian club. The only confirmed developments are that Trossard's departure has opened a place in the attacking rotation and that Tzolis, based on his results, represents a logical, albeit financially demanding, target.
The coming days will show whether Arsenal can convert an agreement in principle with the player into a signed transfer. Should the clubs find common ground at approximately 40 million euros, Tzolis would receive a second opportunity in the Premier League under considerably different circumstances from those he encountered at Norwich. He would join the reigning champions of England with a clear expectation that he would immediately contribute to the pursuit of trophies. Should the negotiations stall, his contract until 2029 allows Club Brugge to retain him without being forced into a quick sale, while Arsenal would have to consider other options for the left side of the attack.
