Arsenal signs Christos Tzolis for around £34 million in record transfer from Club Brugge
Arsenal officially confirmed the arrival of Greece international Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge on 23 July 2026, further strengthening the English champions' attacking line ahead of the new season. The London club did not disclose the financial details of the deal, but Sky Sports reports that the transfer fee amounts to approximately £34 million, or around €40 million. According to the same source, this is the largest sale in the history of the Belgian Pro League, giving the transfer additional significance beyond the sporting context. The 24-year-old winger has signed a five-year contract, running until the summer of 2031, and will wear the number 17 shirt at Arsenal. The club announced that Tzolis has already joined his teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre in north London, while the final registration of the transfer remains subject to the usual regulatory processes.
Tzolis' arrival follows directly after Leandro Trossard's departure for Beşiktaş. Arsenal had previously confirmed that the Belgium international left the club after 174 appearances, 36 goals and 34 assists in all competitions, while Sky Sports estimated the value of that transfer at £17 million, including potential add-ons. Tzolis therefore arrives in London not merely as a new signing, but also as a player expected to take over some of the minutes, goals and creative contribution previously provided by Trossard. Although their profiles do not match in every detail, both can operate from the left, move inside and play closer to the central striker. For Club Brugge, the deal represents an exceptionally large financial return on a player signed from Fortuna Düsseldorf in July 2024. The Belgian club announced at the time that Tzolis had arrived after a season in which he scored 24 goals and registered 10 assists in 37 matches in Germany's second division.
Tzolis' development in Bruges was rapid and measurable. Arsenal state that over two seasons with the Belgian club, he made 108 appearances, scored 43 goals and added 45 assists. In the 2025/26 season, he finished with 22 goals and 29 assists in all competitions, while Club Brugge's league data show 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 league appearances. In July 2025, the club extended Tzolis' contract until 2029 following his highly successful first season in Belgium, strengthening its negotiating position ahead of potential interest from wealthier leagues. At the time of the extension, the club's official announcement listed 21 goals and 16 assists in his first 56 appearances, already demonstrating that he was one of the team's most productive attackers. One year later, Club Brugge managed to convert his sporting performance into a record sale, while Arsenal paid a premium for a player entering the prime years of his career who also has Champions League experience. Why Tzolis fits into Arsenal's attack

Berta particularly highlighted his finishing with both feet, technical quality, ability to operate in tight spaces and consistent supply of goals and assists over the past three seasons. Such a profile suits a team that frequently attacks against a low defensive block and must create overloads in confined areas rather than relying exclusively on open space. Tzolis is not a traditional winger who remains close to the touchline throughout the match. His greatest threat comes when he receives the ball on the left, moves towards the centre and approaches the penalty area, from where he can shoot, combine with teammates or attack the space behind the last defensive line.
In its analysis of the transfer, Sky Sports cited an assessment by Hayk Milkon, the former Club Brugge assistant coach, according to whom Tzolis is most dangerous when he starts in a wide position and then finds the right moment to enter the central channel. Milkon also emphasised his work rate, distance covered, number of sprints and ability to maintain a consistent level of performance while playing matches every three or four days. This is important for Arsenal, who, as English champions and Champions League participants, require a broad rotation without a major drop in intensity. According to the same analysis, Tzolis was rarely unavailable during his time in Bruges, and his longest injury absence covered only two matches. Reliability and availability are particularly valuable in a season in which clubs at the highest level may play more than 50 competitive fixtures.
The numbers from Belgium will not, however, automatically transfer to the Premier League. The English championship brings greater intensity, less time to make decisions and opponents with deeper squads, and Tzolis will have to fight for a role in a team that already has established attackers. His advantage is that English football is not unfamiliar to him, although his first experience was considerably more difficult than expected. The German spell proved to be the turning point: in the 2023/24 season, he became one of the most dangerous players in the 2. Bundesliga, finishing the campaign with 24 goals and 10 assists in 37 matches, according to figures published by Club Brugge when he arrived. Fortuna activated their purchase option, and the Belgian club soon brought him to Bruges. There, Tzolis received a stable role, the coaching staff's confidence and a team structure that made maximum use of his aggression in the final third of the pitch.
His journey is therefore not a straightforward story of a talent who immediately succeeded in a major league. It is the story of a player who left familiar surroundings at a very young age, encountered problems with adaptation and playing time, and then rebuilt his career through several different footballing systems. Such a background may also be relevant for Arsenal, because Tzolis now arrives as a more mature player with experience of pressure, disappointment and proving himself again. In Bruges, he was no longer a development project but a key contributor, a player expected to decide league and European matches. Arsenal are paying for this newer version of Tzolis, not the 19-year-old who was trying to establish himself at Norwich in 2021.
A replacement for Trossard, but not necessarily an identical role
Trossard's departure opened up space on the left side and in the rotation behind the striker, but Tzolis should not be viewed solely as a direct copy of the Belgium international. During three and a half years at Arsenal, Trossard provided tactical flexibility, experience and the ability to make an impact from the bench, while Tzolis arrives with a stronger habit of assuming attacking responsibility through a high number of touches, shots and final passes. Tzolis told Arsenal that he worked individually during the summer break to be ready for a possible transfer and then completed part of pre-season with Club Brugge. This should make it easier for him to join Arsenal's pre-season programme and reduce the time needed to reach competitive rhythm.
What the transfer means for Arsenal and the Greece international
For Arsenal, this is a transfer that simultaneously addresses a short-term need and opens up a long-term option. Following Trossard's departure, the club had to restore depth on the left side, but instead of choosing a veteran or a temporary solution, they opted for a player with rising value and a proven output in European competitions.
