Bamberg extended the BBL semifinal series with a win against ALBA Berlin

Bamberg Baskets stayed in contention for a place in the final of the German Basketball Bundesliga after defeating ALBA Berlin 81:73 in the third game of the playoff semifinal. The game was played on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Brose Arena in Bamberg, and according to the official competition schedule, it was the third matchup of the semifinal series in the 2025/26 season. With the victory in front of their home crowd, Bamberg reduced the deficit in the series to 1:2 and prevented the Berlin team from securing a place in the final on its first away attempt. ALBA still has the advantage and another opportunity to advance, but the third game changed the dynamics of the series because Bamberg, for the first time in this semifinal, managed to impose its rhythm long enough to withstand the visitors' late pressure.

According to sport.de's report, Bamberg either won the quarters or stayed very close in all key periods of the game: the first quarter ended 17:16, the second 22:14, the third went to ALBA Berlin 26:24, and the last went to the hosts 18:17. That distribution of scores shows that the decisive difference was not created in the closing stages, but above all in the second quarter, when the home team took advantage of Berlin's weaker offensive period and built a lead that it later defended. ALBA tried to reduce the deficit in the third and fourth quarters, but did not manage to fully come back. According to the same source, Bamberg raised its biggest lead to 17 points, while the home side spent the longest time in front.

The second quarter opened the path toward the hosts' victory

The game started cautiously, with lead changes and several offensive mistakes on both sides. The hosts had a minimal advantage after the first ten minutes, but the key shift happened in the second quarter, which Bamberg won 22:14. The dpa report, carried by WELT, states that ALBA did not find its usual shooting rhythm in that phase, especially from outside positions, while Bamberg made better use of open situations and the energy from the stands. The home team's lead became double-digit for the first time midway through the second period, and the halftime score was 39:30 for Bamberg.

After the break, Bamberg continued to control the game and, according to the dpa report, moved ahead to 58:41, reaching the biggest lead of the evening. ALBA Berlin then stepped up its defense and tried to speed up the rhythm, but its offensive production was not stable enough for a complete turnaround. The visitors came down to a five-point deficit in the final quarter, but Bamberg responded at moments when it seemed the game could reopen. An important moment in the closing stages was Zachary Ensminger's three-pointer in the final two minutes, after which the home team pulled away again and prevented ALBA from entering a dramatic one-possession finish.

Cobe Williams led Bamberg, Demonia added a double-double

According to sport.de's box score, Cobe Williams was the game's top scorer with 20 points. Williams also had five assists and six steals, which further explains his importance in Bamberg's victory. Ibi Watson added 18 points, including four made three-pointers from six attempts, giving the hosts width in offense at moments when Berlin was trying to close off drives. Demarcus Demonia finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds, so his contribution was especially important in the battle to control the paint and on the defensive glass.

Bamberg did not have a clear advantage in all statistical categories, but it was more efficient in the parts of the game that decided the result. According to the box score, the hosts made 30 of 62 field-goal attempts, while ALBA Berlin stayed at 23 makes from 56 attempts. Bamberg made 13 of 17 free throws, and from the field it had enough players in rhythm not to depend exclusively on one scorer. The difference in turnovers was also important: according to the same source, ALBA had 17, while Bamberg stayed at 11, which gave the hosts more offensive opportunities and easier points in transition phases of play.

For the visitors, Justin Bean and Norris Agbakoko, according to the box score, each scored 14 points. Agbakoko also had eight rebounds, while Bean added five rebounds and two assists. Moses Wood scored 10 points, and Jack Kayil finished with eight points and seven assists, but had a difficult shooting day from beyond the three-point line. Berlin's problem was not only the number of misses, but also that several important possessions in the closing stages ended without a quality shot or after a turnover. In a series in which ALBA has depth and more rotation options, such a night proved enough for Bamberg to extend the semifinal.

ALBA missed its first chance to reach the final, but still leads the series

ALBA Berlin arrived in Bamberg with a 2:0 lead after winning the first two semifinal games at Max-Schmeling-Halle. According to sport.de data, the first game ended 105:86 for the Berlin team on May 30, 2026, while the second meeting on June 1 ended 85:71. That gave ALBA three potential chances to finish the series, but it did not use the first one. For Bamberg, the third game was a matchup with no margin for error, because another defeat would have meant the end of the season and Berlin's passage to the final.

The official easyCredit BBL website states that the playoffs are played in a best-of-five format, which means that the team that first reaches three wins advances to the next round. The same source explains that the series is played according to a 2-2-1 schedule: the better-placed team from the regular season opens with two home games, then the lower-placed team hosts two games, and a possible fifth game is played again at the better-placed team's venue. In that structure, ALBA used the initial home-court advantage, while Bamberg has now responded in its own arena. The series therefore continues in Bamberg, and the pressure is once again shared: ALBA still has the lead, but Bamberg has shown that it can control the rhythm in front of its fans.

According to the league's official team data, ALBA Berlin finished the regular season as the second-placed team, while Bamberg was third. Both teams entered the semifinal with ambitions of reaching the final series, and their positions in the standings show that it was a matchup of evenly matched opponents, despite Berlin convincingly winning the first two meetings. Additional context is provided by the fact that these teams already met in an important final this season: according to Bamberg Baskets' official announcement, Bamberg defeated ALBA Berlin 74:72 in February in the BBL Cup final and won the seventh cup in the club's history. The BBL semifinal series is therefore not only a battle for the league final, but also a continuation of a competitive rivalry that has marked the closing stretch of the German season.

Bamberg's defense slowed down Berlin's offense

One of the most important elements of Bamberg's victory was the hosts' ability to knock Berlin out of its offensive rhythm. According to sport.de reports, ALBA had significantly better ball movement and more efficient offenses in the first two games of the series, but at Brose Arena it did not manage often enough to get open shots in runs. According to the box score, the Berlin team made seven three-pointers from 29 attempts, a percentage of 24.14 percent. Bamberg did not take a large number of threes at an elite level, but made eight from 23 attempts and thus maintained balance in outside shooting.

The home defense particularly profited from activity in the passing lanes. Williams' six steals speak to Bamberg's aggressiveness on the first line of defense, and according to the box score the home side had 12 steals in total. Such pressure did not always produce easy points, but it often interrupted the continuity of the visitors' possessions. ALBA, meanwhile, had an advantage in total rebounds, 35 to 26 according to sport.de data, but that advantage was not enough to make up for weaker shooting and a higher number of turnovers. In this way, Bamberg won a game in which it did not dominate every category, but better connected defense, transition and shot selection.

Discipline at moments when Berlin was getting closer also carried additional significance. After ALBA reduced the margin to five points in the closing stages, the hosts did not panic and did not enter a series of rushed possessions. Instead, Bamberg extended possessions, looked for better positions and used key shots. The sport.de report highlights that Anton Gavel's players looked composed enough in the second half to keep Berlin at a distance, even though not everything functioned as well offensively for the hosts as it had in the second quarter. It was precisely that control of the margin that made the difference between extending the series and ending the season.

Brose Arena again hosts the fourth game

According to the official easyCredit BBL schedule, the fourth game of the semifinal series will be played on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 18:30, again in Bamberg. For ALBA Berlin, it will be the second opportunity to secure a place in the final, while Bamberg must win again to force a decisive fifth game. If it happens, the league's official schedule states that it is planned for Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Berlin. Such a schedule results from the advantage ALBA earned through its better placement in the regular season.

According to the WELT and dpa report, the third game was played in front of 5700 spectators at Brose Arena. The BBL's official data on Bamberg Baskets states that Brose Arena has a capacity of 5700 seats, which means that the atmosphere was an important part of the game's context. The home support was especially noticeable during periods when Bamberg increased its lead and when Berlin tried to reduce the deficit in the closing stages. The fourth game will therefore again have a strong psychological element: Berlin must find a better offensive rhythm away from home, while Bamberg must confirm that the third meeting was not only a one-off reaction on the edge of elimination.

In the other semifinal, according to sport.de and dpa reports, FC Bayern Munich ended the series 3:0 with a 77:57 victory at Telekom Baskets Bonn and has already secured a place in the final. That means the winner of the ALBA Berlin - Bamberg Baskets matchup knows who awaits it in the final series of the German championship. Bayern thereby gained additional time to prepare, while Berlin and Bamberg must continue to expend energy in the semifinal. For ALBA, the fourth game is therefore a chance to avoid an additional trip and a fifth game, while Bamberg is playing for a complete return of the series to Berlin.

The series remains open despite Berlin's advantage

The 81:73 result does not change the fact that ALBA Berlin still controls the series because it needs only one more win to reach the final. Still, the manner in which Bamberg got the victory shows that the hosts managed to adjust after two defeats in Berlin. A better start to the second quarter, greater aggressiveness on defense and a more efficient closing stretch allowed Bamberg to stop Berlin's run for the first time in the semifinal. For Anton Gavel's team, the most important thing is that the victory came in a high-pressure game, in which any major crisis would have meant the end of the season.

ALBA must find an answer on two levels in the fourth game. The first is shooting, because a similar three-point performance and a similar number of turnovers can hardly be enough for an away playoff win. The second is rhythm, because Berlin must prevent Bamberg from again entering a long stretch in which the home players control the tempo and involve the crowd in the game. Bamberg, on the other hand, must repeat its defensive energy and maintain composure in the closing stages, especially if ALBA again tries to mount a late comeback. The semifinal series now enters the fourth game with clear stakes: Berlin still has the advantage and the next first chance to reach the final, while Bamberg has an opportunity to tie it at 2:2 and completely reopen the battle for a place in the BBL final.
