Bayer Leverkusen ties Abdoulaye Faye down until 2031 and sends him on a new loan to Celta
Bayer 04 Leverkusen has extended the contract of Senegalese defender Abdoulaye Faye until 30 June 2031, while the 21-year-old will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Celta Vigo. The German club announced on 3 August 2026 that the agreement does not include a purchase option, thereby retaining complete control over the player’s long-term future. Faye will play in LaLiga for the first time in Spain, while also getting the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Europa League. Celta enter the new season after finishing sixth in the Spanish championship, while Leverkusen expect their young centre-back to continue his development at the highest level through another year of regular playing time. The loan therefore represents a continuation of a clearly defined plan: after gaining experience in Sweden and France, Faye will now adapt to a third major European football environment.
The contract extension shows how strongly Leverkusen believe in the young centre-back
The decision to extend the contract one year before the new loan is an important indication of Faye’s status in Leverkusen’s long-term plans. His previous contract was valid until the summer of 2030, and the German Bundesliga club has now tied him down until the end of June 2031. Such a move gives the club greater contractual security, while allowing the player to complete the season in Vigo without immediate pressure concerning his next transfer or the expiry of his agreement. Since Celta do not have a purchase option, Faye is expected to return to Leverkusen after the end of the season, where his progress and the possibility of integrating him into the first team will be assessed again. In practice, this is a development model frequently used by major clubs when they want to provide a young player with strong competition and continuity while retaining control over his sporting development.
Bayer 04 director of football Kim Falkenberg emphasised that Faye has great potential and that he demonstrated it both during the previous season in France and in the first weeks of the current preparations with Leverkusen. According to Falkenberg, the purpose of the loan to Spain is to give the defender additional playing time at a high level, including in international matches. Falkenberg said that the club expects the next step in the player’s development, confirming that the decision is based not only on the current competition in defence but also on an assessment of his long-term potential. Leverkusen expressed a similar view when Faye arrived in 2025, when club officials highlighted his quality in building attacks, passing and initiating play from the back line. The new contract extension shows that this initial assessment has not changed after his year in French football.
The season at Lorient gave him valuable minutes in Ligue 1
Faye spent the 2025/26 season on loan at FC Lorient, who had previously returned to the top tier of French football. According to data published by the EFE agency and reported by Cadena SER, the Senegalese defender played 17 matches in Ligue 1 and accumulated 1,446 minutes, in addition to two appearances in the French Cup. Such playing time is particularly important for a young centre-back because the position requires experience in decision-making, organising the defensive line and reacting under pressure. At Lorient, he established himself as a regular member of the team, which Leverkusen also cited as one of the reasons they believe he is ready for a more demanding next step. Instead of returning to a reserve role in Germany, an environment was selected in which he should have a realistic opportunity to continue playing week after week.
The French experience was also his first full season in one of Europe’s five strongest leagues. Ligue 1 brought him matches against technically strong attackers, teams that often play at a high tempo and a variety of tactical approaches. It is therefore particularly important for Leverkusen that Faye did not merely train in a demanding environment, but was exposed to genuine competitive situations throughout the season. His next challenge in LaLiga will be different: the Spanish championship traditionally places great emphasis on ball control, technical precision and positional discipline. The combination of French physical intensity and Spanish tactical and technical demands could give him a broader profile before his planned return to the Bundesliga.
From the Diambars academy to a Bundesliga club in only a few years
Faye was born on 22 September 2004 in Kaolack, Senegal, and received his football education at the Diambars FC academy, which is known for developing young Senegalese players. In August 2023, he moved to Sweden and joined BK Häcken, but did not immediately receive substantial playing time during the first phase of his European career. To gain experience, he was sent on loan to second-division club Örgryte IS during 2024, for whom he made 23 competitive appearances according to his official Bayer profile. That season allowed him to adapt to European football, establish a regular match rhythm and assume responsibility in a senior team. After returning to Häcken at the beginning of 2025, he became a more important part of the defence and attracted Leverkusen’s attention.
In the first part of 2025, he played six league matches and six cup matches for Häcken, scored two goals and accumulated a total of 985 minutes. Bayer 04 signed him on 27 June 2025 and gave him a contract until 2030, assessing him as an investment with long-term prospects. Only one month later, he was sent to Lorient, demonstrating that the German club had not signed him to fill an immediate gap in the squad, but as a player whose development needed to be carefully managed over several seasons. His current move to Celta is his second consecutive loan since becoming a Leverkusen player. The difference is that he arrives in Vigo with the experience of a full top-flight season and a clearer expectation that he will prove himself at a club with European commitments.
Celta offer LaLiga, Europe and a team with growing ambitions
Celta finished the 2025/26 season in sixth place in LaLiga with 54 points, securing a place in the Europa League for the second consecutive year. Qualification was confirmed with a 1-0 victory against Sevilla in the final round, as the Vigo-based team continued its period of stabilisation under coach Claudio Giráldez. For Faye, this means that he will not play only in the domestic league and cup, but will also be exposed to a European schedule during the autumn. UEFA has scheduled eight rounds in the league phase of the Europa League for the 2026/27 season from September 2026 to January 2027, providing participating clubs with a congested fixture list and a need for greater squad depth. Precisely such circumstances could increase the number of opportunities available to the young defender, although he will have to earn a place in the starting line-up while competing with more experienced players.
The Galician club already played in the Europa League during the 2025/26 season and reached the quarter-finals, meaning the international stage will not be a new experience for most of the team. At the same time, sixth place in the league demonstrated that European participation did not come at the expense of domestic stability. Celta will therefore enter the new season with the ambition of remaining in the upper half of LaLiga and being competitive in Europe again. Faye arrives as a player expected to increase the depth of the defence, particularly in the position of left-sided centre-back. His height of 1.91 metres, left foot and ability to participate in building attacks correspond to the profile Leverkusen highlighted when they first signed him.
The loan without a purchase option clearly defines the relationship between the two clubs
The absence of a purchase option is one of the most important elements of the agreement. Celta receive a young defender for the entire season, but do not have a pre-agreed right to retain him after June 2027. Leverkusen are thereby sending a message that they do not regard Faye as a player they wish to dispose of permanently, but as a talent who still needs to gain experience before a final decision is made about his role in the Bundesliga. For Celta, such an arrangement reduces long-term certainty, but allows them to obtain a reinforcement for a season containing a large number of matches without making a full transfer investment. The sporting success of the loan will therefore be measured primarily through playing time, adaptation and the level of his performances rather than through negotiations over a permanent transfer.
For the player himself, the situation is equally clear. A good season in Vigo could open the path to a greater role at Leverkusen, while a lack of continuity could postpone that step. At the age of 21, Faye is at a stage when regular playing time is particularly important, but he must simultaneously demonstrate that he can meet the demands of a club competing on several fronts. LaLiga will test his defending of space, his play against technically accomplished opponents and his composure when carrying the ball out from the back. European matches will additionally expose him to different styles, travel and shorter preparation periods between fixtures.
A world champion with Leverkusen experience will also be waiting for him in Vigo
In Celta’s dressing room, Faye will meet Borja Iglesias, a striker who won the World Cup with Spain in July 2026. FIFA confirmed that Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final in New York and New Jersey on 19 July, with Iglesias being a member of the championship-winning team. After the title victory, Celta described him as the first active player from the club to become a world champion with Spain. Iglesias’s connection with Leverkusen is also interesting for Faye: the Spanish striker spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Bayer. He was part of the team that won the Bundesliga without defeat and the DFB-Pokal, thereby completing a historic domestic double.
Iglesias can therefore pass on direct experience of life and work at Leverkusen to the young defender, although their roles and stages of their careers are significantly different. Within Celta’s squad, Faye will also work with players who are already accustomed to the demands of LaLiga and European matches. Such an environment could facilitate his adaptation away from the pitch, but will simultaneously raise the standards in training and in the competition for a place in the team. Communication will also be important for the young centre-back, particularly in the defensive line, where coordination with the goalkeeper and his teammates often determines the reliability of the entire system. Leverkusen will be able to monitor his development in a league that provides a consistently high level of technical and tactical challenge.
The new season should show how close Faye is to Leverkusen’s first team
By extending the contract until 2031, Bayer 04 have secured sufficient time to assess Faye’s development without rushing. The loan at Lorient confirmed that he is capable of accumulating substantial playing time in one of Europe’s strongest leagues, while the season at Celta will show whether he can transfer that level into a different footballing context while also handling European commitments. The key indicators will not only be the number of appearances, but also the consistency of his performances, his ability to adapt to different defensive partners and his progress in possession. Leverkusen have already publicly stated that they see him as a player for the future, and the new contract further strengthens that assessment. Celta, meanwhile, receive a talented left-footed centre-back in a season in which squad depth will be essential.
Faye’s rapid rise therefore continues, having taken him from Senegal through Swedish and French football to LaLiga in only three years. Each of those stages had a clear developmental purpose: Örgryte gave him his first regular senior minutes in Europe, Häcken the opportunity to prove himself in Sweden’s top division, Lorient experience in Ligue 1, while Celta should combine the demands of an elite domestic league and international competition. His return to Leverkusen is planned for the summer of 2027, when four years will remain on his contract. Until then, the season in Vigo will provide the clearest answer to whether he is ready to move from the status of a promising defender to that of a serious candidate for a role in the German club’s defence.
