Bellucci in Stuttgart stopped Davidovich Fokina and opened the grass-court part of the season with a three-set victory

Mattia Bellucci earned passage into the second round of the ATP Boss Open tournament in Stuttgart after defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6:2, 6:7(5), 6:1 on Monday, June 8, 2026, on the grass of Tennisclub Weissenhof E.V. The result confirmed in the tournament schedule and on match-tracking services shows the double nature of the duel: the Italian tennis player controlled most of the encounter with his serve and a more aggressive return, but he had to survive the reaction of the seventh seed in the second set. Davidovich Fokina managed to force a deciding section after the tie-break, but Bellucci immediately raised his level of play again and won the third set convincingly. Thus the Spanish tennis player ended the Stuttgart tournament already in his first appearance, while Bellucci achieved a valuable victory at the beginning of the part of the season played on a grass surface. According to official ATP Tour information, the Stuttgart tournament is held from June 8 to 14, 2026, as an ATP 250 series competition.

Early breaks directed the match toward Bellucci

The start of the encounter immediately showed why the serve and the first shot after the serve on grass are often a decisive part of tactics. Davidovich Fokina opened the match with a won service game, but Bellucci quickly took the initiative and, according to the report of the Spanish newspaper AS, went to 5:1 with two consecutive breaks. Such a development of the first set allowed the Italian to play with more freedom and to push Davidovich Fokina into shorter exchanges in which the Spaniard struggled to find rhythm. Although the seventh seed reduced the deficit with one more secure service game, Bellucci kept the advantage and closed the first set 6:2. In the context of a grass surface, that opening was especially important because the early loss of serve made every attempt by Davidovich Fokina to gradually enter the match more difficult. Bellucci also used the situations in which he could attack the opponent's second serve, and he maintained the advantage calmly enough not to allow a comeback already in the first section.

The second set brought a much more balanced relationship of forces. According to the same AS report, in the first service games of the second set Davidovich Fokina did not allow Bellucci to open the set again with early pressure, and then in the middle of the section he found a better balance between defense and attack. The Spaniard reached a break for 5:3 and served for the set, but Bellucci immediately returned to the match, taking the encounter toward a tie-break. In the decisive game of the set, Davidovich Fokina, after an exchange of mini-breaks, nevertheless found enough precision to win the tie-break 7:5 and force a third set. That part of the match confirmed that Bellucci's initial dominance was not enough for a calm finish, because Davidovich Fokina managed to raise the intensity and briefly reverse the emotional flow of the encounter. Still, that comeback did not carry over into the deciding section.

Third set without uncertainty

After the lost tie-break, Bellucci entered the third set more decisively and immediately pressed his opponent's serve again. According to the description of the course of the match in AS, Davidovich Fokina lost serve early, and Bellucci confirmed the break to move to 3:0. Another service break soon followed, after which the Italian had control over the finish and a 5:0 advantage. Davidovich Fokina managed to avoid a completely lost set without a won game, but he did not find a way to seriously threaten a turnaround. Although near the end he had chances to recover one break, Bellucci neutralized them and then completed the match 6:1. The final section was the clearest indicator of the difference in stability in the moments after the match had become open again.

The statistical data published by Flashscore further explain why Bellucci managed to retain overall control. The Italian had 13 aces, five more than Davidovich Fokina, and converted five of ten break points, while the Spanish tennis player converted only one of four opportunities to take serve. Bellucci won 100 of a total of 177 points, that is 56 percent of all points played, which is a significant advantage in a match that nevertheless went to three sets. According to the same source, the Italian won 69 percent of points on his serve and as many as 43 percent of points on return. Davidovich Fokina finished with 77 points won, and the most costly part of the statistics was the weaker performance in his own service games: he won 57 percent of points on serve and lost serve five times. Such a ratio is especially difficult on grass, where even one break often decides a set, and in this duel Bellucci did more than enough damage in the first and third sets.

A victory above the ranking list and an important step forward on grass

Bellucci arrived in Stuttgart as a player who, according to the official ATP ranking available on the day of checking, is in 78th place in the singles standings. Davidovich Fokina, according to the same ranking, was the 22nd player in the world and the seventh seed in the Stuttgart draw. For that reason, the Italian's victory carries additional weight, not only because of his placement in the next round but also because of the way he responded after losing the second set. In the encounter against a higher-ranked and seeded opponent, Bellucci did not remain trapped in the missed opportunity after the second set went away in the tie-break, but opened the third as if it were the beginning of a new match. Such a reaction is important at ATP level, where the difference between victory and defeat often comes down to several service games after an emotionally demanding set. For Davidovich Fokina, the defeat means the interruption of the Stuttgart episode already in the first round and a weak start to the grass-court section of the season.

This victory also continues Bellucci's favorable record against Davidovich Fokina in 2026. According to TennisTemple data, the two of them met before Stuttgart in February in Acapulco, where Bellucci won 6:3, 6:3 on a hard court. Stuttgart brought different conditions, a faster and lower surface and a different rhythm of exchanges, but the final outcome again went to the Italian player's side. Although far-reaching conclusions cannot be drawn from one head-to-head record, the victory on grass shows that Bellucci has weapons that transfer well to fast surfaces. His serve, willingness to take the ball earlier and efficiency on break points were the key elements of this match. Davidovich Fokina, on the other hand, was left without continuity after it looked in the second set as though he had found a way to extend and perhaps turn the encounter around.

Stuttgart as the first major test after Roland Garros

The Boss Open in Stuttgart traditionally has a special place in the calendar because it comes immediately after the Paris Grand Slam tournament and introduces the part of the season on grass. According to the official ATP Tour announcement, the 2026 edition is played from June 8 to 14, and the singles final is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, not before 2 p.m. The tournament is played at Tennisclub Weissenhof E.V., and the ATP lists it as a 250 series competition with a total prize fund of 768,220 euros. The singles tournament winner receives 250 points and 116,855 euros, the finalist 165 points and 68,170 euros, while reaching the second round brings 25 points and 13,480 euros. Since it is played on grass, Stuttgart is also important as preparation for later tournaments on the same surface, including Wimbledon, although each player enters that part of the season with a different load after clay.

In the tournament profile, the ATP Tour recalls that the Boss Open is part of the extended grass-court series and that the Stuttgart tournament switched from clay to grass in 2015. That change increased its role in the transition between Roland Garros and the most important grass-court part of the season. The grass in Stuttgart often rewards players who can finish points quickly, serve well and be decisive on the first shot after the serve, which was clearly seen in Bellucci's victory. In such conditions, Davidovich Fokina, otherwise a player known for fighting spirit, movement and the ability to play longer exchanges, did not manage often enough to impose the pattern that would suit him. Bellucci reduced the number of situations in which the Spaniard could build the point and forced him to solve too much under pressure. Precisely that tactical picture was decisive in the sets that the Italian won by a large margin.

The wider draw and the meaning of a seed's early exit

The official ATP Tour draw for Stuttgart shows that Davidovich Fokina was one of the seeded players who were supposed to bring stability to the lower part of the tournament bracket. His defeat already in the first round opens space for players who are not among the main seeds, and Bellucci now enters the next stage with a victory that can give him confidence in the specific conditions of a grass surface. Although the tournament has strong names in the upper and lower parts of the draw, the early elimination of the seventh seed changes the expected rhythm of that part of the competition. At ATP 250 series tournaments, such outcomes can significantly change the path to the final stages, because the differences in players' rankings are often smaller than they appear from seeding positions. Bellucci now has the opportunity to confirm that the victory over a higher-ranked opponent is not just an isolated result, but the beginning of a more concrete tournament performance.

Other first-round results also attracted attention in the same part of the program. According to the AS report, Martin Landaluce defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 5:7, 6:3, 7:6 after a comeback and secured a duel with the second seed Taylor Fritz. The ATP Tour reminded in the tournament preview that Fritz is the defending champion, after defeating Alexander Zverev 6:3, 7:6(0) in the 2025 final. Such context further emphasizes how sensitive the start of the week in Stuttgart is for players who, after clay, must quickly adapt movement, serving patterns and return shots to grass. Bellucci has so far found a winning formula in that transition, while Davidovich Fokina was left without the opportunity to build a feel for the surface through the tournament. His second set showed that he can find solutions, but the first and third sets were too one-sided for the defeat to be reduced only to a few bad points.

Statistics reveal the difference in efficiency, not only in serve power

At first glance, Bellucci's 13 aces suggest that the serve was the most important element of the victory, but Flashscore data point to a broader picture. The Italian, along with 70 percent of points won after the first serve, also stood especially well on the second serve, where he won 68 percent of points. That deprived Davidovich Fokina of the usual possibility of creating series of break points through constant pressure on the opponent's second serve. Bellucci also won 44 percent of points on the Spaniard's first serve and 41 percent of points on his second serve, which ultimately opened enough chances for five breaks. The difference in winners also favors the winner, 32 to 25, while Bellucci had fewer unforced errors, 25 to 29. In a match on grass, that is a combination that hardly leaves room for a long-lasting comeback.

Davidovich Fokina offered the greatest resistance in the second set, but he did not find the stability that would allow him to transfer that momentum into the third section. His eight aces and only one double fault do not look like a poor serving performance on paper, but the problem was in the number of points he lost once the exchange opened up. Bellucci very often reached an attacking position already in the early phase of the point, and when he had break points he was much more concrete. Five converted chances out of ten clearly enough explain why the score of the first and third sets was so convincing. Davidovich Fokina ultimately won only nine of 27 games, while Bellucci won 18, which shows that the Italian, despite the lost tie-break, was more stable through most of the duel.

Bellucci continues the tournament with clear reserves of confidence

For Bellucci, the victory in Stuttgart is important also because of the moment in the season. Grass brings a short period in which players have little time to adapt, and an early victory against a seed can change the impression of the entire tournament. Considering that Davidovich Fokina, according to the ATP ranking, was significantly higher ranked, Bellucci's success is not only passage into the next round but also a result that confirms he can be dangerous when his serve and return work in the same direction. For the continuation of the tournament, it will be important whether he can repeat the concentration from the first and third sets, but also reduce the oscillations that allowed his opponent to come back in the second. In Stuttgart, the rhythm of the competition will quickly accelerate, and every next opponent will have enough material for analysis of this match. But Bellucci completed the first task successfully: he withstood the favorite's comeback, found an answer in the deciding set and opened the grass-court week with a victory that has both competitive and psychological value.
