Bergvall's summer of uncertainty: Tottenham holds a contract until 2031, Chelsea are monitoring the situation during the World Cup
Lucas Bergvall is once again at the center of transfer speculation in London. According to unofficial media reports, the young Swedish midfielder has let Tottenham know that he would prefer to change surroundings during the summer transfer window, although for now there is no official confirmation that a formal transfer request has been submitted to the club. That distinction is not insignificant: in modern football, interest, scouting and dissatisfaction with playing time often precede negotiations, but they do not by themselves mean that a transfer is close. Tottenham, according to the club's own announcement, secured Bergvall's signature on a new contract in April 2025 that runs until 2031, so the London club has a very strong position in negotiating terms. That is precisely why a possible offer for one of the most talented young midfielders in the Premier League is being viewed as a test of sporting strategy, not just as another market rumor.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea have intensified their monitoring of Bergvall during the 2026 World Cup, where the 20-year-old midfielder is playing for Sweden. The same source states that Chelsea have once again opened interest in a player who had previously been on their radar, while the platform Si Phillips Talks Chelsea reported that scouts from the London club are monitoring several players at the tournament, including a name that was already a topic within the club a few months ago. In Bergvall's case, the fact that he is a Tottenham player adds extra sensitivity, which would make any direct approach from Chelsea a sporting and symbolic issue within London football. For now, there is no official confirmation that Chelsea have submitted an offer, nor that Tottenham have opened negotiations.
Tottenham are not under pressure, but market pressure is growing
Tottenham's greatest advantage in this case is the contract. On April 29, 2025, the club announced that Bergvall had signed a new long-term contract until 2031, only about ten months after formally joining the first team from Djurgården. In the same announcement, Tottenham recalled that the agreement for his arrival had been reached in February 2024 and that the Swede arrived at the club on July 1 of the same year. Such a contractual framework means that Tottenham do not have to respond to short-term market pressures, especially not in the case of a player the club sees as part of its long-term development. In practice, this makes negotiations more difficult for a buyer because Spurs can demand a high transfer fee or simply refuse to talk.
Media reports from February and April this year had already indicated that Tottenham do not want to sell Bergvall. CaughtOffside, referring to earlier information from The Athletic, wrote that Chelsea and Aston Villa had explored his availability during the winter transfer window, but the response from Tottenham was negative. The same outlet later reported that Arsenal were also mentioned alongside Chelsea and that Bergvall is considered an almost untouchable player at the club. Such information should be read with caution because it has not been confirmed by official statements, but it explains well why an increasingly prominent transfer story is forming around Bergvall. Talent, a long contract and interest from rivals usually create a combination in which the price rises quickly.
For Tottenham, the issue is even more complex because of the context of the 2025/26 season. According to an ESPN report, the club secured its place in the Premier League only on the final day of the season with a 1:0 win against Everton, avoiding relegation and sending West Ham to the Championship. NBC Sports states in the final table that Tottenham finished 17th with 41 points, while Chelsea were tenth with 52 points. That piece of information does not mean that Tottenham would have to sell their best young players, but it explains why a serious review of the squad is expected. After a season in which survival was decided in the final round, every player with market value becomes part of the wider discussion about rebuilding the team.
Why Chelsea are monitoring Bergvall
In recent years, Chelsea have systematically invested in young players, especially footballers who can develop in multiple roles and retain value on the market. Bergvall fits that profile almost ideally. He is a midfielder who can play in the central area, who has the technique to play under pressure and who has already gained experience in the Premier League, but still has enough room for development. For a club looking for long-term solutions in the middle of the pitch, such a player has special value, especially if it is assessed that he is not completely satisfied with his position or with the team's sporting direction at Tottenham.
On the other hand, a possible move from Tottenham to Chelsea would carry significant risk for all sides. By selling to a direct London rival, Tottenham would send a message that they are giving up a player from their own long-term core, which would be difficult to explain to fans after a season marked by a fight for survival. Chelsea, meanwhile, would have to pay a premium for a player with a contract until 2031 and at the same time convince Bergvall that Stamford Bridge offers him a clearer development path. If there is no official transfer request and if Tottenham remain of the view that a sale is out of the question, Chelsea's interest may remain only part of a broader scouting file. However, the very fact that his name is being monitored during the World Cup shows that the market is carefully recording every one of his appearances.
CaughtOffside stated in April that talks, if Tottenham were to agree to negotiate at all, could begin around a very high transfer fee. Such assessments are not official and do not represent a confirmed price, but they reflect the logic of the market: a young international, a contract until 2031, Premier League experience and interest from clubs with great buying power make up a combination that rarely ends in a cheap transfer. Tottenham can wait in the meantime, because time is currently working for the club. Every good match for Sweden further raises Bergvall's profile, but at the same time also the price that interested clubs would have to pay.
The World Cup has changed the tone of the story
Bergvall's appearance for Sweden at the 2026 World Cup has further increased the visibility of his situation. FIFA lists Bergvall among the midfielders in the Sweden squad led by Graham Potter on its official roster, and Sweden have been placed in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. Ahead of the tournament, Tottenham announced that Bergvall had been included in the Sweden squad, while another Spurs player, Dejan Kulusevski, according to the same club announcement, missed the squad because of injury. For the young midfielder, this meant an important opportunity: an international tournament is often a place where a player's status changes faster than during the club season.
Sweden opened the competition with a convincing 5:1 victory against Tunisia. FIFA's report states that Yasin Ayari, Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Mattias Svanberg scored for Sweden, while match reports note that Bergvall came off the bench and took part in the closing stage of the encounter. Global Sports Archive and ESPN state in the match record that Bergvall assisted the final Swedish goal, which Ayari scored in stoppage time. Such a contribution may not be enough on its own to change Tottenham's stance, but it is visible enough to increase the interest of clubs already monitoring him. For scouting departments, especially during a major tournament, the details are often what matter: reaction under pressure, intensity without the ball, decision-making in the closing stages and readiness to come off the bench.
However, the tournament did not continue ideally for Sweden. According to reports from The Guardian and ESPN, the Netherlands beat Sweden 5:1 in Houston on June 20, 2026, which complicated Sweden's situation in the group. Such a result does not diminish Bergvall's individual potential, but it shows that scouts will view his performance in a broader context, including the team's reaction after a heavy defeat. For a young midfielder, precisely such matches are important because they reveal how much he can remain calm when the team loses control of the rhythm. In transfer assessments, reputation is built not only on good moments but also on the way a player responds to unfavorable circumstances.
From Djurgården to the Premier League in less than two years
Bergvall's rise has been rapid, but not accidental. Tottenham stated in the official announcement about the new contract that the player had arrived from Sweden's Djurgården after the transfer was agreed at the beginning of 2024. The club pointed out that in his debut campaign he made a large number of appearances in all competitions and that he scored his first goal for Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semifinal against Liverpool in January 2025. Such details explain why the club sees him as more than a project for the future. Bergvall has already been given high-intensity matches, felt the pressure of English football and shown that he can contribute in a competitive environment.
Still, young players at big clubs often find themselves between two plans. On the one hand, the club wants to develop them gradually and protect them from excessive strain. On the other hand, the player himself and his entourage may seek clearer playing time, especially if international status has already been achieved. If the reports that Bergvall is considering a change of surroundings are accurate, the reason does not have to be only dissatisfaction with the club. It may be an assessment that at this stage of his career he needs a more stable sporting path, a defined role and less turbulence around the team. In that sense, Tottenham will have to show not only that they can keep him through a contract, but also that they can offer him a convincing development plan.
For Chelsea, Bergvall would be an investment in a rare player profile: young, already tested in English football, active at international level and versatile enough for different playing systems. But that does not mean Chelsea would automatically offer him a better sporting situation. The London club also have strong competition in midfield and their own history of frequent squad changes. If Bergvall were looking for calmer development, the size of Chelsea's project alone would not be enough. Negotiations, if they happen, would therefore have to include not only a transfer fee but also a convincing sporting argument.
A difficult decision only if an offer arrives that is hard to refuse
Tottenham are currently in a position of control. The official contract runs until 2031, there is no confirmed offer, and publicly available information suggests that the club had previously rejected the idea of a sale. At the same time, the football market rarely remains static. If Chelsea or another club conclude that Bergvall is available, they may test Tottenham's resolve with an offer large enough to open an internal discussion. That would be the most difficult point for Spurs: keep a player who might want a different path or accept money that could accelerate the rebuilding of the squad after a turbulent season.
For Bergvall, the most important thing is that his career does not turn into a transfer saga that overshadows his development on the pitch. The World Cup offers him a global stage, but also additional pressure because every one of his appearances now carries a double meaning: sporting for Sweden and market-related for the clubs monitoring him. Tottenham can insist on the contract, Chelsea can continue scouting, and the media can amplify the story, but the decision will ultimately depend on three elements: the player's real desire, Tottenham's willingness to negotiate at all and the level of the offer that would arrive in London. Until then, the most precise thing to say is that Bergvall's future remains an open topic, but not a deal that is close to completion.
