Excelsior Maassluis broke IJsselmeervogels with a late goal and gained an advantage in the battle for the Tweede Divisie

Excelsior Maassluis recorded a valuable victory in the first match of the final round of the promotion-relegation play-off connected with the Dutch Tweede Divisie, defeating IJsselmeervogels 2:1 at Sportpark Dijkpolder in Maassluis. According to the Sofascore match report, the match was played on 10 June 2026 at 18:00 UTC, and the home side secured the win with Kevin Ringeling's goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. That outcome gave the home team a minimal but psychologically important advantage in the two-legged tie that decides status for the next season. IJsselmeervogels held for a long time a result that would have allowed them a more favourable entry into the final 90 minutes ahead of the return leg, but the late goal completely changed the tone of the first match. In a competition in which every mistake is costly, and the difference between staying up and moving to a lower tier often comes down to one detail, Maassluis made use of the closing stages and now enters the return leg with a one-goal advantage.

Early goal, visitors' response and decision in stoppage time

According to the Sofascore match record, Excelsior Maassluis took the lead in the 27th minute through a goal by Achraf Madi, which moved the first phase of the match in the home side's favour. The advantage before the break was not large, but it was important enough to allow the home team a more controlled entry into the second half. IJsselmeervogels, according to the same source, reached the equaliser in the 62nd minute through Azzedine Dkidak, bringing the score back into balance and opening up a closing phase in which both teams had reason for caution. A draw would have been an acceptable outcome for the visitors, especially because the return leg is played on their ground, but the final minutes did not unfold according to that scenario. Kevin Ringeling scored in the 90+5th minute for the final 2:1, and that goal could carry great weight in the overall outcome of the final.

ESPN also listed the final 2:1 for Excelsior Maassluis in its match summary, with confirmation that it was a match in the Dutch promotion-relegation play-off for the Tweede Divisie played on 10 June 2026. The result itself does not bring a final resolution, because the final is played over two matches, but it gives the home side a clear calculation ahead of the return leg. Excelsior Maassluis cannot rely solely on protecting the advantage, because a one-goal difference in this kind of format is very fragile. Still, the late goal changes the psychological pressure: IJsselmeervogels now have to chase a result, while Maassluis has the possibility to adjust its approach and react to the course of the return leg. In such two-legged ties, especially at a level where the teams know each other well, the value of the first goal in the return leg will be exceptionally high.

A match with few shots, but with maximum stakes

The statistical data cited by Soccerway show that the match was neither an open goal fest nor a match with a large number of attempts. According to that platform, Excelsior Maassluis had 55 percent possession of the ball, while IJsselmeervogels were at 45 percent. The total number of shots was modest: according to those data, the home side had five shots, two of them on target, while the visitors had two finishes, with one shot on target. Such a ratio describes well a match in which space was limited, and every precise move carried increased weight. In play-off circumstances, it is not unusual for the rhythm of the encounter to be interrupted by caution, because the teams are not fighting only for victory on one evening, but for position in the aggregate score over two matches.

The venue was also part of the broader picture. Soccerway and FotMob list Sportpark Dijkpolder as the stadium for the match, and it is the home ground of Excelsior Maassluis in the city of Maassluis. The home ground did not bring a convincing advantage in possession or in the number of chances, but in the closing stages it nevertheless became an important factor. The pressure of the home finish, support from the stands and the need not to go into the return leg without result capital created the setting in which Ringeling's goal gained additional value. In play-offs, it is often precisely such moments that are remembered: shots that change not only the score on the scoreboard, but also the way both dressing rooms think about the second match.

The play-off as the last station of the season

According to the KNVB promotion-relegation regulations for the national men's leagues in the 2025/26 season, the final phase between the Tweede Divisie and the Derde Divisie is organised in such a way that it decides a place in the Tweede Divisie for the 2026/27 season. The Dutch association's document states that the winner of the final secures participation in the Tweede Divisie, while the defeated teams from the play-off continue their participation in the Derde Divisie. This makes the two-legged tie between Excelsior Maassluis and IJsselmeervogels not merely a final addition to the season, but a match with direct competitive consequences. In such a context, the 2:1 result is not a final verdict, but it is important capital. The home side has taken the first step, while the visitors now have to find a way to overturn the overall result in the return leg.

The play-off system also gives additional weight to the previous rounds. According to Global Sports Archive's overview, IJsselmeervogels reached the final after being better than Sparta Nijkerk in the quarter-final with an aggregate score of 5:1, and then eliminating ADO '20 in the semi-final by an aggregate 8:0. The 7:0 victory in the first semi-final match stood out in particular, showing the attacking efficiency of the visiting team ahead of the final. Excelsior Maassluis had a different path: first it advanced against VVSB with an aggregate score of 4:1, and then against FC Rijnvogels it had to reach the final through a more dramatic outcome. After 3:3 on aggregate, Maassluis, according to the same source, advanced with better penalty taking, 5:4. That path to the final already showed that the team is used to matches in which the outcome is decided by small details.

The lower part of the table shows why the two-legged tie is so important

The final table of the regular part of the 2025/26 Tweede Divisie season, according to ESPN and Global Sports Archive, shows how small the differences were in the lower part of the standings. IJsselmeervogels finished in 16th place with 31 points, while Excelsior Maassluis were 17th with the same number of points. ACV finished in 18th place with 30 points, confirming that the battle for survival in the closing stage of the season was extremely tight. In such a distribution of points, one victory, one unused penalty or one late goal could have meant a completely different path after the end of the championship. That is why the first final match of the play-off also has a broader significance than the result itself: it is a continuation of a season in which the lower part of the table was separated by minimal margins.

The data from the regular part of the season also explain why a one-sided match was not expected in Maassluis. Both teams entered the closing stage with the same number of points, and the previous head-to-head meetings during the season did not offer a simple conclusion about a clear favourite. IJsselmeervogels won convincingly 4:0 at the same stadium in November 2025, as confirmed by the official report of the club from Spakenburg, while the league match in April 2026 ended without goals. The first final match of the play-off thus produced a third different scenario: not a convincing away victory, not a closed draw, but a narrow home triumph decided in stoppage time. Such diversity of outcomes further announces an uncertain return leg.

What the result means ahead of the return leg

The 2:1 advantage puts Excelsior Maassluis in a better, but not a safe, position. In a two-legged tie in which league status is at stake, a one-goal difference does not allow a passive approach. If Maassluis concede an early goal in the return leg, the aggregate score will again be level, and the momentum could shift to IJsselmeervogels' side. If, however, the home side from the first match scores the first goal in the return leg, the pressure on the club from Spakenburg will be significantly greater. That is precisely why tactical balance will be crucial: Maassluis must protect the advantage, but also retain enough threat going forward so that the match does not turn into a prolonged defence of its own penalty area.

For IJsselmeervogels, the situation is clear, but demanding. The team that showed in the previous rounds that it can create and convert a large number of chances must now prove that it can come back even after an unpleasant late blow. Dkidak's goal in the 62nd minute showed that the visiting side can find a way through the Maassluis defence, but the ending of the first match also revealed vulnerability in moments when it seemed that the result had been stabilised. The return leg will therefore also be a test of mental strength. The club that better controls emotions, transitions between phases of play and set pieces could have the decisive advantage.

Maassluis won the first act, but the decision remains open

According to the schedule cited by Global Sports Archive and other results-tracking platforms, the return leg between IJsselmeervogels and Excelsior Maassluis is scheduled for 13 June 2026. In that match it will be decided who, after the play-off final, will secure a place in the Tweede Divisie for the 2026/27 season. Excelsior Maassluis take a minimal advantage and an important feeling that they finished the first match in their own way into the return leg. IJsselmeervogels, on the other hand, have enough reason to believe that the two-legged tie is not lost, especially because of earlier results in the play-off and the fact that they will play the last match in front of their own crowd. The first encounter in Maassluis therefore did not close the story, but it clearly set the terms: Excelsior have the result, IJsselmeervogels must respond.
