Jong Sparta preserved its place in the Tweede Divisie with a comeback against Groningen U21

Jong Sparta Rotterdam secured survival in the Dutch Tweede Divisie after defeating Groningen U21 3:2 on 10 June 2026 at Sportpark Nieuw Terbregge in Rotterdam in the second leg of the promotion-relegation play-off final. After a 1:1 draw in the first match in Groningen, the Rotterdam side advanced with a 4:3 aggregate score and thereby retained the right to compete in the Tweede Divisie in the 2026/27 season. According to Sofascore data, Groningen U21 had a 2:0 lead already after 31 minutes and led 2:1 at half-time. Jong Sparta, however, first equalised after the break and then, in the 75th minute, scored the winning goal that decided the play-off.

The match carried clear importance in terms of the result because it was not only about progress to the next stage, but about a place in the competitive hierarchy for the following season. Groningen U21 reached the final as the overall champion of the Dutch O21 Divisie, while Jong Sparta entered the play-off as the lowest-placed reserve team from the Tweede Divisie which, under KNVB rules, had to defend its status against the champion of the U21 competition. Official information from FC Groningen before the tie emphasised that the teams were playing for a place in the Tweede Divisie, a level the club described as an important step for the development of young players because it allows them regular matches against more experienced opponents. For Jong Sparta, the outcome meant confirmation of survival, while for Groningen U21 it marked the end of a very successful season in which the team nevertheless remained without promotion.

Groningen's early blow and the home side's response before the break

Groningen U21 opened the return leg better and quickly took control of the scoreline. According to Sofascore, Yénio Holder scored in the 13th minute for 0:1, which at that moment gave the visiting team the lead also on aggregate over the two matches. In the 31st minute Levi Roeland made it 0:2 after an assist from Mark Hoekstra, so it seemed that the team from Groningen would take a major step toward promotion. That goal was particularly important because it came during a period in which the home team had to look for a response, while every next mistake could have pushed Jong Sparta even further away from staying in the league.

Jong Sparta nevertheless brought the match back into uncertainty before the break. Viggo Guit reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute, according to Sofascore after an assist from Luc Nieuwenhuijs, thereby ending a period in which Groningen U21 had looked closer to controlling the contest. That goal did not only reduce the deficit to 1:2 in the return leg, but gave the home side a more realistic starting point for the second half. Since the first match had ended 1:1, Groningen still had the aggregate advantage at the break, but the home team needed only one goal to get back into the tie. In the context of the two-legged contest, this changed the psychology of the match because the pressure gradually began to shift onto the visiting team as well.

Vianello restored balance, Guit completed the comeback

The second half brought a quick response from Jong Sparta. Giannino Vianello scored in the 49th minute for 2:2, with Sofascore naming Alvaro Henry as the assistant. With that goal, the tie returned to complete parity because the aggregate score was level again. For the home team, this meant they no longer had only to chase the result, but could look for a goal that would give them the lead. Groningen U21, on the other hand, after its early lead, again had to find a way to stop the opponent's momentum.

The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute, when Viggo Guit scored his second goal of the match to make it 3:2. According to Sofascore data, Guit had also been the scorer of Jong Sparta's first goal in the closing stages of the first half, so the return leg ended with him as one of the key individuals of the tie. That goal gave the home side a 4:3 aggregate lead and set a result that Groningen U21 was no longer able to change. Although the original schedule described it as a play-off final, the match had the dynamics of a classic elimination finale: Groningen gained an early lead, Jong Sparta came back step by step, and the final third of the match decided who would play in the higher tier next season.

The first match left everything open

The two-legged tie began on 6 June at Sportpark Corpus den Hoorn in Groningen, where Groningen U21 and Jong Sparta played out a 1:1 draw. According to Sparta Rotterdam's official report after that match, Jong Sparta had the initiative in certain phases of the first encounter, but the home side also created dangers and had a goal disallowed for offside in the closing stages. Sparta then announced that the scorer for Jong Sparta had been Luc Nieuwenhuijs, while the final outcome meant that the decision would be made in Rotterdam. The result from the first match left enough room for both scenarios: Groningen could seek an away victory for a historic step forward by its O21 team, while Jong Sparta, on its own ground, had the opportunity to defend its league status.

The official previews from both clubs before the two-legged tie clearly showed how important the duel was. Sparta Rotterdam stated that Jong Sparta had finished the season in tenth place in the Tweede Divisie and that, for that reason, it was entering the promotion-relegation play-off against the champion of the O21 Divisie. FC Groningen, ahead of the first match, pointed out that its Onder-21 team was playing for a place in the Tweede Divisie after winning the overall title in its age category. In such a framework, the 1:1 in Groningen did not give a major advantage to either side, but home field in the return leg, according to the rules of the play-off system, went to the team from the Tweede Divisie.

Why the two-legged tie was part of a special system for young teams

This duel was part of a special promotion-relegation structure for so-called beloftenteams, meaning reserve or development teams of professional clubs, and teams from O21 Divisie 1. According to the KNVB document on promotion and relegation for the 2025/26 season, if the lowest-placed reserve team from the Tweede Divisie finished between 10th and 16th place, and if there was an overall champion in O21 Divisie 1 with a guarantee declaration submitted on time, a series of decisive home-and-away matches would follow. In the same document, the KNVB states that the second-division beloftenteam has home advantage in the second match and that the winner of the two-legged tie competes in the Tweede Divisie in the 2026/27 season, while the loser continues in O21 Divisie 1.

Such a system differs from the usual play-offs of senior first teams because it is linked to the rules on development squads of professional clubs in the Dutch football pyramid. The goal is to align sporting results, the development of young players, and the restrictions that apply to the number of development teams at certain levels of competition. In the rules for the 2025/26 season, the KNVB states that two development teams participate in the Tweede Divisie, which explains why Jong Sparta's status was not assessed only through the final table, but also through a special relationship with the champion of the O21 level. In practice, this meant that Jong Sparta's tenth place was enough to enter the risk of a play-off, but not for a direct loss of status.

Groningen U21 reached the final as overall champion

FC Groningen U21 reached this two-legged tie after winning the overall title in the under-21 competition. According to FC Groningen's official announcement, the team of coach Melchior Schoenmakers defeated De Graafschap U21 3:1 in the decisive match for the overall title, in front of more than a thousand spectators at Corpus den Hoorn. The club then stated that the scorers were Sven Bouland and Levi Roeland, with Roeland scoring two goals. This gave Groningen U21 the right to take part in the play-off against Jong Sparta and the opportunity to qualify for the Tweede Divisie.

For FC Groningen's development programme, such a season had clear value regardless of the final failure in the play-off. Ahead of the two-legged tie, the club emphasised that a place in the Tweede Divisie would reduce the gap between academy football and the first team, because young players would play every week against physically and tactically more demanding opponents. This is also the reason why such duels are important beyond the result itself. Groningen showed that its U21 team can compete with a development side that already plays in a senior competition, but in the return leg it paid the price for the period in which it failed to hold on to a two-goal advantage.

Jong Sparta defended its status after a difficult end to the league season

Jong Sparta entered the play-off after a turbulent end to the league season. According to the HollandseVelden table for the 2025/26 Tweede Divisie, the team was tenth after 34 rounds with 45 points, a record of 12 wins, nine draws and 13 defeats, and a goal difference of 71:73. Sparta Rotterdam's official announcement after the final league round stated that Jong Sparta, with a 4:1 defeat away at Katwijk, ended in the zone leading to the play-off for survival. That is exactly why the two-legged tie with Groningen U21 carried additional weight: it was not the finale of a successful season, but an opportunity to improve the impression after the final decline in the league.

Coach Jeff Stans, whom Sparta lists as the coach of Jong Sparta in its club announcements, had a team that showed attacking efficiency during the season, but also defensive vulnerability. The number of goals scored and conceded in the league table suggests a team capable of creating chances, but also a side that often entered open matches. The return leg against Groningen U21 fit that pattern: Jong Sparta conceded two early goals, but then, through individual quality and persistence, reached three goals and a comeback. In such circumstances, the 3:2 result was not an exception, but a continuation of a season marked by major fluctuations.

What the result means for the 2026/27 season

According to KNVB rules for this type of play-off, the winner of the two-legged tie must compete in the Tweede Divisie in the 2026/27 season, and the loser in O21 Divisie 1. This means that Jong Sparta, with a 4:3 aggregate victory, preserved its place in the competition, while Groningen U21 remains outside the Tweede Divisie despite winning the overall title in its age category. From a sporting perspective, this is a very important outcome for Jong Sparta because continued participation in the Tweede Divisie gives young players matches against senior-developed opponents. For Groningen U21, the result is disappointing because the team was on the verge of promotion after an excellent start to the return leg, but also an indicator that the development side can compete on the edge of the higher tier.

In the Dutch system, such duels have broader significance than a single match. They serve as a test of the real readiness of young teams for the intensity of senior competition, but also as a protective mechanism for sides already playing in the Tweede Divisie. Jong Sparta in Rotterdam used precisely that advantage of league experience and the home return leg. Groningen U21 showed quality through its early lead and overall season, but in the closing stages of the two-legged tie the efficiency of the home team and the double contribution of Viggo Guit proved decisive. After the final whistle, the final score of 3:2 meant that the status quo in the Tweede Divisie was maintained, while Groningen's generation will be left with a season with a title, but without the final step toward a higher competition.
