Fucsovics eliminates Hurkacz with a comeback on grass in ’s-Hertogenbosch

Marton Fucsovics secured passage to the second round of the ATP Libéma Open tournament in ’s-Hertogenbosch after defeating Hubert Hurkacz 3:6, 7:6(5), 7:6(4) on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The first-round match, or round of 32, was played on grass in the Dutch town of Rosmalen, at a tournament that in the tennis calendar comes at the beginning of the short but very important season on that surface. According to Sofascore data, the match was played on Court 2 and recorded as part of the ATP competition in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Fucsovics lost the first set, then endured two extremely tight sets without losing another set on serve and eventually won both tie-breaks. In doing so, he knocked out of the tournament a player who, because of his height, serve and previous results on grass, is often considered a dangerous opponent in such conditions.

The Hungarian player’s victory was valuable not only because of his progress to the next round, but also because of the way it was achieved. Hurkacz opened the match better, took the first set 6:3 and looked like a player controlling the rhythm with his serve and aggressive first shot after the serve. Fucsovics, however, gradually reduced the number of errors, managed to stay in points when the Pole looked for quick solutions and, in the decisive moments of the second and third sets, showed greater stability. According to Flashscore statistics, Hurkacz had more winners, but also significantly more unforced errors, which opened up space for Fucsovics to redirect the match toward a more physically and mentally demanding contest. In a duel in which one or two points could have changed the entire outcome, the Hungarian played the closing stages more coolly and thus earned one of the more notable victories of the opening part of the tournament.

Two tie-breaks decided the match with no room for a drop in concentration

The first set went Hurkacz’s way, as he used his early advantage in service games and pulled away on the scoreboard early enough that Fucsovics was unable to find a way back. In that phase, the Pole had a clearer plan, relying on a powerful first serve and trying to shorten the exchanges. Such a pattern is especially effective on grass, where the low bounce of the ball and shorter contact with the surface reward players who can quickly seize the initiative. Fucsovics, however, stayed close enough in the rhythm of the match that the loss of the first set did not turn into complete control by his opponent. After losing it 3:6, the key change was that he increasingly managed to neutralize Hurkacz’s first attack and force him to play an extra shot.

The second set was the turning point of the match. Fucsovics did not get an early break, but from game to game he held his serve with increasing confidence and waited for an opportunity in the closing stage. He won the second-set tie-break 7:5, bringing the match back to square one and at the same time changing the psychological balance on court. Hurkacz still had the weapon with which he could decide any game, but he could no longer count on one good run of service points being enough for a smooth passage. Fucsovics continued to play with discipline in the third set, without major fluctuations, and the decision again came in a tie-break. In the final mini-stretch he was more precise and more aggressive at the right moment, won the tie-break 7:4 and confirmed the comeback after more than two hours of play, according to Flashscore’s statistical record.

It is especially telling that, according to the same statistical source, Fucsovics finished without converting a break point, while Hurkacz converted one of four. That data shows how unusual the match was: the player who had fewer direct breakthroughs on the opponent’s serve ultimately prevailed because he played the tightest parts of the contest better. Flashscore also states that Fucsovics won 81 percent of points after his first serve and 73 percent of points after his second serve, while Hurkacz stood at 79 percent after his first serve and 60 percent after his second serve. The difference on the second serve was particularly important because it allowed the Hungarian to survive pressure in long games and prevent Hurkacz from constantly attacking his weaker opening shot. In a match with two tie-breaks, such details carry almost the same weight as a break.

Libéma Open as the first major test after Roland-Garros

The Libéma Open in ’s-Hertogenbosch traditionally has a special place in the tennis calendar because it comes immediately after the clay season and Roland-Garros, during a period when players must quickly adjust to grass. According to the official ATP Tour guide, the 2026 edition is being held from June 8 to 14, it is an ATP 250 category tournament, and the competition is played on the grass courts of Autotron Rosmalen. The ATP states that the tournament was founded in 1990 and that the 2026 edition is the 35th edition of the men’s competition overall. The same place notes that the main names at this year’s tournament include Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alex de Minaur, Daniil Medvedev, Tallon Griekspoor and defending champion Gabriel Diallo. In such a draw, every first-round victory has additional value because a player may already encounter a seed or an opponent with a strong reputation on fast surfaces in the next match.

The official tournament website states that the wider event programme takes place from June 6 to 14, 2026, at Autotron ’s-Hertogenbosch. Qualifying and the accompanying programme began before the main draw, while the men’s main tournament in the ATP calendar is set from June 8. For spectators following the final stages of the tournament or planning to attend other matches, it is useful to follow the official daily schedule because on grass the programme often changes due to weather conditions. The tournament’s official information for June 11 also listed the duel between Felix Auger-Aliassime, the top seed, and Marton Fucsovics, confirming that the Hungarian faces a significantly more demanding test after his victory over Hurkacz. For visitors staying in the city during tournament week, accommodation near Autotron and ’s-Hertogenbosch may also be practical, especially because of early daytime slots and possible changes to the programme.

For Fucsovics, progress is especially valuable because it comes on a surface on which experience often proves as important as current ranking. The grass season is short, and players do not have many tournaments to adapt before Wimbledon. In such conditions, a victory over an opponent like Hurkacz can bring both points and confidence, as well as additional confirmation that a style based on solid baseline play, physical readiness and calm decisions in closing stages can cope with highly serve-oriented players. Earlier in his career, Fucsovics showed that he can be troublesome at major tournaments, and the ATP biographical profile recalls that in 2021 he reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals after a victory over Andrey Rublev. That fact gives broader context to his result in the Netherlands: this is not merely a sudden flash, but a player who has enough experience on grass for such closing stages.

Hurkacz misses an opportunity in a match he had under control

For Hurkacz, the defeat is painful precisely because for much of the match he had clear arguments for victory. He handled the first set efficiently, and Flashscore statistics show that he produced more direct points overall than Fucsovics. At the same time, however, he accumulated more errors, which is often decisive in a long match on grass. When a player who relies on serve fails to maintain a sufficiently high percentage of safe solutions in rallies, the opponent gets the chance to survive the pressure and extend the set to a tie-break. Fucsovics did exactly that: he did not necessarily dominate constantly, but he returned the ball into the court often enough, maintained neutral positions and forced Hurkacz to repeat the attack.

Hurkacz’s ATP profile states that the Pole reached his career-best ranking, world No. 6, on August 5, 2024, which explains why his early defeats still attract attention. Hurkacz is a player with experience of big matches, previous titles and a reputation as one of the more dangerous servers on the ATP Tour. On grass, such a profile is especially valuable because a quality first serve can reduce the number of long exchanges and hide periods of weaker play from the baseline. Against Fucsovics, however, that was not enough. After winning the first set, he failed to find a second scoreboard escape, and two tie-breaks went to the opponent who looked more stable in both moments.

The first-round defeat also means that Hurkacz remains without the chance for a deeper run at one of the opening tournaments of the grass season. That does not necessarily have to carry long-term consequences, but it shortens his competitive rhythm before the continuation of the June schedule. For players who rely on serve and quick play, matches on grass also serve as an adjustment to movement, bounce and shot selection in transition toward the net. Hurkacz will therefore have to analyze the closing stages of sets most from this duel, because it was precisely there that he missed the chance to turn the initial advantage from the first set into an overall victory. In competitive terms, the result shows how thin the line is on this surface when it comes down to two or three decisions under pressure.

What the victory means for the rest of the tournament

With the victory, Fucsovics secured a place in the second round, where according to the official tournament schedule he will face Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian player arrived in ’s-Hertogenbosch as the top seed, so the Hungarian player will immediately have to raise his level of play after an exhausting comeback. This is also the typical dynamic of ATP 250 tournaments in the weeks before Wimbledon: the draw is shorter than at Masters events, but the concentration of quality players can very quickly lead to high-intensity matches. In his next appearance, Fucsovics will have to maintain high effectiveness on his second serve, reduce the number of situations in which he defends break points and try to create pressure on the opponent’s serve earlier. Against the top seed, it is difficult to expect that he will again be able to rely solely on tie-breaks.

For the tournament, such a result is a good reminder of the unpredictability of the opening week of the grass season. Players arrive with different degrees of adaptation after clay, and differences in ranking or seeded status do not always reflect readiness for the specific conditions on grass. Against Hurkacz, Fucsovics showed that patience and a strong mental structure can pay off even when the statistics at first glance do not give the full picture of the winner. Hurkacz had more attacking points, Fucsovics had better control of errors and a more efficient second serve, and the decisive points went to the player who chose risk better in the closing stages. In a sporting sense, it is precisely such matches that give value to the first rounds of tournaments: not only reputation decides, but the ability to adapt in real time.

The Libéma Open continues until Sunday, June 14, 2026, when, according to the ATP guide, the singles final is scheduled. The defending champion from 2025 is Gabriel Diallo, who according to the ATP defeated Zizou Bergs 7:5, 7:6(8) in last year’s final and won his first ATP Tour title. In this year’s edition, attention will be focused not only on the seeds, but also on the players who already in the opening rounds show that they have quickly adapted to the surface. With his victory over Hurkacz, Fucsovics has entered exactly that group. The next match will show whether he can turn the first-round result into a deeper run or whether the comeback against the Pole will remain one of the early but important stories of the Dutch tournament.
