Qualifier Benjamin Bonzi knocks out Ugo Humbert and reaches the Libéma Open quarterfinals
Benjamin Bonzi continued a highly successful week on grass in 's-Hertogenbosch and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Libéma Open tournament. The French tennis player, who entered the main draw through qualifying, defeated fifth seed Ugo Humbert 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round on June 11, 2026. According to the official ATP Tour results, the match was played on Court 1, lasted one hour, 55 minutes and 58 seconds, and the chair umpire was Arnaud Gabas.
The victory carries additional weight because Bonzi entered the match as a qualifier against a higher-ranked and seeded opponent. According to the ATP PIF rankings available on June 12, 2026, Humbert was the world No. 32, while Bonzi occupied 95th place. The ranking gap and the status of fifth seed gave Humbert the role of favorite, but Bonzi once again took the initiative in the deciding set and finished the job for one of the more notable surprises in the men's section of the tournament.
Bonzi started better, Humbert responded in the second set
The first set went to Bonzi by a score of 6-4, which allowed the qualifier to enter the continuation of the match more calmly. Humbert found an answer in the second section and leveled at 6-3, so the winner was decided by a third set. In the final part of the duel, Bonzi was again firmer in the key moments and closed the match 6-3, thereby preventing Humbert from confirming his seeded role and securing the expected place among the final eight.
The score itself shows the rhythm of a match in which neither player maintained complete control across all three sets. Bonzi made better use of the opening part of the match, Humbert reacted in the middle of the duel, and then the qualifier managed to restore in the third set the advantage he had held at the beginning. Such a course is especially important on grass, where one weaker service game or a brief drop in concentration often decides an entire set. According to the official ATP record, Bonzi ultimately advanced with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 scoreline, which takes him into the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 series tournament.
Four victories in the tournament week
Bonzi's passage to the quarterfinals did not come after a short route through the draw. According to the official ATP Tour results, he opened qualifying on June 6 with a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory against Marc Polmans. The next day, in the second round of qualifying, he defeated Bernard Tomic after a comeback, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-5, thereby securing a place in the main tournament.
In the first round of the main draw, Bonzi defeated Dutch wildcard Mees Rottgering 6-4, 6-4 on June 8. That result had already confirmed that he had carried the competitive rhythm from qualifying into the main part of the tournament, and the victory over Humbert further increased the value of his entire performance. He therefore reached the quarterfinals with four victories on the same surface and under the same conditions, which on grass is often a significant advantage for a player who adapts quickly to the surface, bounce and shorter rallies.
For Bonzi, this result is valuable in terms of ranking points as well. According to the official ATP tournament preview, reaching the quarterfinals of the Libéma Open in singles brings 50 points, while the second round carries 25 points. Since Bonzi came into the main tournament from qualifying, his performance in 's-Hertogenbosch also brings an important boost in confidence, not only in the rankings. Qualifiers on grass often have to play several very different matches in a short period, and Bonzi went through exactly such a path in the Netherlands.
Humbert stopped after a secure start against Ymer
Ugo Humbert entered the tournament as the fifth seed and justified that status in the first round of the main draw. According to the ATP's official result, on June 8 he defeated qualifier Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-3. That duel lasted a little more than an hour and gave the impression of a controlled entrance into the tournament, especially because Humbert can use his left-handed serve, early shots and ability to accelerate points on grass.
The defeat in the second round is therefore a significant step backward for him in a week in which he had an opportunity to open the grass-court part of the season with a deeper result. The Libéma Open comes in the period between Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, when many players are looking for rhythm on grass and testing their serve, movement and transition toward the net. According to the available official tournament data, Humbert ended his appearance after two matches in the main draw, while Bonzi took advantage of the opportunity and extended his stay in Rosmalen.
It is important to point out that the defeat does not change the fact that Humbert entered the match with a clear ranking advantage and seeded status. That is exactly why Bonzi's victory resonates as a sports-relevant upset, and not merely as one player's passage into the next round. In ATP 250 tournaments, such results often change the dynamics of a section of the draw, especially when a qualifier eliminates a seed before the quarterfinals.
Next opponent: Alex de Minaur
According to the official ATP draw, Bonzi awaits Alex de Minaur, the tournament's second seed, in the quarterfinals. The Australian defeated American qualifier Martin Damm 7-6(8), 7-5 in the round of 16. That match, according to the ATP match record, was played on June 10 and lasted one hour, 51 minutes and three seconds, which shows that De Minaur also had to pass a demanding test before entering the quarterfinals.
The duel between Bonzi and De Minaur brings a different challenge from the match against Humbert. De Minaur is one of the fastest players on the ATP Tour, known for his court coverage, defensive stability and ability to extend rallies even on surfaces that usually reward quicker finishing of points. After the victory over Humbert, Bonzi will enter that match with competitive momentum, but also with the awareness that against the second seed he will have to repeat the high level of concentration from the third set.
The ATP draw shows that, in the same section of the tournament, alongside Bonzi and De Minaur, other seeds or experienced players also secured quarterfinal positions. In the upper part of the draw, top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime got past Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, while Kamil Majchrzak defeated James McCabe 6-0, 6-3. In the other part of the draw, Adrian Mannarino eliminated Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3, and Zhizhen Zhang got past Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4.
The tournament in Rosmalen is an important start to the grass-court part of the season
The Libéma Open is an ATP 250 series tournament played on grass in 's-Hertogenbosch, at the Autotron Rosmalen complex. According to the official ATP Tour preview, the 2026 edition is being held from June 8 to 14, while qualifying is scheduled for June 6 and 7. The ATP also states that this is the 35th edition of the tournament, founded in 1990, and that the tournament director is Marcel Hunze.
The official tournament preview states that the total prize fund for the ATP section amounts to 723,535 euros. The singles winner receives 250 points and 110,055 euros, the finalist 165 points and 64,195 euros, and the semifinalist 100 points and 37,735 euros. The quarterfinal, which Bonzi reached with his victory over Humbert, according to the same distribution brings 50 points and 21,865 euros. Such a distribution further explains the importance of second-round matches, because reaching the final eight already brings a concrete reward and ranking impact.
The tournament in Rosmalen traditionally has a special place in the calendar because it is played very early in the grass-court season. Players coming from the Paris clay have to adapt quickly to a lower bounce, shorter rallies and the greater importance of the first serve. For that reason, results in 's-Hertogenbosch often serve as an early check of form ahead of the continuation of the grass-court swing and Wimbledon, although conclusions must be drawn carefully because grass conditions are extremely specific.
An upset that opens up the draw
Bonzi's victory over Humbert changes the balance in the lower part of the draw because the fifth seed has been eliminated from the competition. According to the official ATP draw, that section now leads toward the Bonzi - De Minaur quarterfinal, while Zhizhen Zhang and Adrian Mannarino meet in the neighboring quarterfinal. This has opened the possibility that the qualifier from France, if he continues his run, could reach the semifinal against an opponent who is also not among the two highest-ranked seeds in that section of the tournament draw.
For Bonzi, it is crucial that he has already played different types of matches in 's-Hertogenbosch. Against Polmans he came through in two sets, against Tomic he had to make up for a lost first set, against Rottgering he controlled two sets, and against Humbert he celebrated after losing the second set. Such a run is not only a statistical fact, but also an indicator of adaptation throughout the tournament. On grass, where points are often short and sets can break open in a few minutes, that ability to return quickly to a match can be decisive.
Humbert, meanwhile, will have to look for a continuation of his form at the next grass-court tournaments after his exit. The season on this surface is short and leaves little room for long adjustments. According to the available ATP schedule, the Libéma Open ends on June 14, and immediately after it come new grass-court tournaments ahead of Wimbledon. Bonzi has already done more than expected in the Netherlands, but the quarterfinal against De Minaur will be the most demanding test of his week so far.
