Zhang in 's-Hertogenbosch stopped Griekspoor and silenced the home crowd

Zhang Zhizhen secured a place in the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament Libéma Open in 's-Hertogenbosch after defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4 in the second round. According to the tournament's official announcement, the Chinese tennis player ended the run of the home representative and 2023 champion in a match in which Griekspoor had strong support from the stands but failed to impose his rhythm on the grass court. The encounter was played in the round-of-16 stage of the ATP part of the tournament, and the final score was also confirmed in the official ATP Tour draw. With his victory over the sixth seed, Zhang produced one of the more notable results of the tournament so far, especially because he entered the draw with protected ranking status. For Griekspoor, the defeat meant the end of his attempt to make another deep run at a tournament that holds a special place in his career.

The first-set tiebreak changed the direction of the match

The first set proved crucial to the overall course of the duel. Griekspoor, according to the organizers' report, had opportunities in the opening stretch, but he did not turn them into an advantage that would have led him toward control of the match. On fast grass, where every missed point on serve and return is especially costly, Zhang remained calm long enough to take the set into a tiebreak. There, the Chinese player was more precise in the closing stages and won the additional game 7-5, thereby taking control of the scoreline and the psychological pressure. Such an outcome carried additional weight because Griekspoor, in front of his home crowd, needed to use the energy of the stands, but after losing the set he had to seek a comeback against an opponent who was reading the conditions on court increasingly well.

In the second set, Zhang continued to play patiently and aggressively enough to maintain the advantage gained in the first part of the match. The official tournament announcement states that Griekspoor struggled with the return on fast grass, which Zhang was able to turn into more comfortable service games and shorter exchanges. The Chinese tennis player did not need a dramatic finish as in the first set, but completed the job with a 6-4 scoreline. In the context of the grass-court season, such a victory has special value, because on a surface that rewards the first strike and decisiveness, players rarely get much room to correct mistakes. Zhang used precisely that narrow margin, while Griekspoor was left regretting the first set, in which he had the chance to steer the match in a different direction.

Griekspoor was left without another deep run at a tournament he has already won

The defeat was especially painful for Griekspoor because it happened at the tournament where he won the title in 2023, as confirmed by the official history of the Libéma Open. Before the encounter with Zhang, the Dutchman had already come through a demanding home duel against Botic van de Zandschulp, which, according to the organizers' announcement, was played over two days and ended with Griekspoor's 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4 victory. In that match, Griekspoor served for the win in the second set, but Van de Zandschulp forced a tiebreak and a third set before rain interrupted the encounter. After the continuation on Wednesday, there were no more breaks, and Griekspoor held on to his earlier advantage and advanced. Precisely for that reason, it was expected that in the second round, encouraged by a difficult victory and the support of the crowd, he would have momentum for another result on familiar ground.

However, the match against Zhang brought a different dynamic. According to the tournament report after the victory over Van de Zandschulp, Griekspoor and Zhang often train together during the year, but their duel in 's-Hertogenbosch was marked as their first head-to-head meeting in a competitive setting. This further emphasized the uncertainty before the match, because knowing an opponent's game from practice does not necessarily help when playing in front of a crowd, for points, and in the conditions of a grass-court tournament. Zhang maintained his concentration better in those circumstances at the decisive moments. Griekspoor, on the other hand, was left without the chance to repeat or come close to the success of 2023, when he went all the way in front of the home crowd.

Zhang's victory gains additional weight because of the comeback context

Zhang's result in Rosmalen is important also because of the broader context of his season. ATP ranking data state that Zhang is currently far from his career-best position, while the official ATP Tour biography records that he reached No. 31 in July 2024. ATP also states that Zhang was the first Chinese tennis player to enter the top 100 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings, and then the top 50, which places his career in an important framework for Chinese men's tennis. The official Libéma Open announcement recalled that before his injury problems he had been ranked as the No. 31 player in the world. His appearance with a protected ranking in 's-Hertogenbosch is therefore not just an administrative label in the draw, but also an indicator of the period from which the player is trying to return toward his previous level.

Such circumstances add extra value to a victory over a seed and former tournament champion. Zhang did not merely reach the quarterfinals, but showed that even on grass he can be dangerous against players who know the conditions in Rosmalen well. For a player returning after problems with continuity, wins in matches decided by small margins are often as important as the points they bring. They confirm that physical readiness, confidence and feel for the closing stages can function again under pressure. In this case, the atmosphere also created additional pressure, because Zhang was playing against the home favorite in an environment that was naturally inclined toward Griekspoor.

Mannarino, a former tournament champion, awaits him in the quarterfinals

Zhang will play in the quarterfinals against Adrian Mannarino after the French left-handed tennis player defeated fourth seed Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3. According to the organizers' announcement of June 12, Mannarino won the French duel, which lasted almost two hours and forty minutes, and secured a meeting with Zhang. That pairing has additional tactical intrigue because Mannarino traditionally uses a flat shot, changes of rhythm and the low bounce of the ball on grass to pull his opponent out of a comfortable position. Against that type of opponent, Zhang will have to repeat the stability on serve and the calmness from the first-set tiebreak against Griekspoor. The quarterfinal duel will also show whether the victory over the home seed can be the start of a bigger result or only a single step forward in a comeback season.

Mannarino comes to 's-Hertogenbosch with his own tournament history. The official list of Libéma Open champions names him as the 2019 title winner, which means that in the next round Zhang will again play against a tennis player who knows how to win on the grass in Rosmalen. In the same part of the draw, other players who can significantly affect the outcome of the tournament have already advanced. The organizers reported that top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, after a first-round bye, defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, while Kamil Majchrzak awaits him in the quarterfinals. In the other part of the draw, Benjamin Bonzi, a qualifier and winner over Ugo Humbert, plays against second seed Alex de Minaur, confirming that the tournament has already produced several results in its early phase that changed the expected order.

Libéma Open as the beginning of the European grass-court stretch

The Libéma Open is played at the Autotron in Rosmalen, in the 's-Hertogenbosch area, and official ATP Tour data state that the 2026 ATP edition of the tournament is held from June 8 to 14. In the tournament information, the organizers state that qualifying was held on June 6 and 7, that the event is played on grass, and that the total prize fund for the ATP and WTA sections amounts to 965,000 euros. The same source also cites an expected attendance of 62,000 spectators, which explains why the home appearances of Dutch tennis players have a special atmosphere. The tournament has a combined character, because a WTA 250 tournament is held alongside the ATP 250 event. Such a format gives it broader significance in the week that marks the transition from the clay season toward preparations for Wimbledon.

The tournament's history also emphasizes its specific position in the calendar. According to the official history of the Libéma Open, the first grass-court edition in Rosmalen was held in 1989 as a test event, and already in 1990 the tournament was part of the newly established ATP Tour. The organizers state that until 2014 the tournament was placed in the week before Wimbledon, while since 2015 it has been held in the week after Roland Garros and retains its role as a preparatory competition for the grass-court part of the season. Over the years it has carried different names, including Heineken Trophy, Ordina Open, UNICEF Open, Topshelf Open and RICOH Open, and since 2018 it has borne the name Libéma Open. Among the champions, according to the official list, were Richard Krajicek, Lleyton Hewitt, David Ferrer, Adrian Mannarino, Tallon Griekspoor, Alex de Minaur and Gabriel Diallo.

A result that changes the mood in the draw

Zhang's victory over Griekspoor should not be viewed only as an upset against a home player, but also as a result that changes the tone of the lower half of the draw. Griekspoor, as the sixth seed and a former champion, was one of the players expected to use home court and familiarity with the conditions as an advantage. His exit opens space for a player who entered the tournament with a protected ranking but has proven quality from the period when he was near the top of world tennis. By reaching the quarterfinals, Zhang earned the chance to confirm that the result against Griekspoor was not merely the product of one good tiebreak. The next test against Mannarino will be different in the tempo and geometry of play, but the second-round victory showed that Zhang has enough stability in Rosmalen for an equal battle with experienced grass-court players.

For Griekspoor, there remains the impression of a missed opportunity at a tournament where he has already built a special relationship with the crowd. According to the available official information, the key difference was Zhang's efficiency in the closing stages of the first set and his ability not to allow a comeback in the second set. In such matches on grass, the difference between advancing and exiting often comes down to a few points, and this time the tiebreak and one set in which Griekspoor did not find enough answers on return proved decisive. Zhang therefore left the duel not only with a successful result, but also with confirmation that he can withstand the pressure of a home atmosphere. The Libéma Open thus gained a quarterfinal encounter in which comeback ambition meets the experience of a former tournament champion.
