GOAT League final at Klinček interrupted after incident: Martinjak hit an opposing player, his team disqualified
The finale of the GOAT League futsal competition in Zagreb ended with the interruption of the final match and the disqualification of one of the teams after a physical incident on the pitch of the Klinček Sports Center. According to available media reports, at the center of the events was Marko Martinjak, the well-known Croatian bare-knuckle boxer, who headbutted an opposing player during the tense closing stages. The match was then stopped, and the organizers, citing a violation of the competition rules, decided to exclude Martinjak's team from the finale and to register the final by an official decision.
The incident took place on May 31, 2026, at Zagreb's Klinček, a sports venue in Kušlanova Street that in recent seasons has become one of the more recognizable locations for Zagreb's recreational and semi-professional futsal. According to reports by Index and 24sata, the clash occurred after a verbal argument on the pitch, after which Martinjak approached a player from the opposing team and headbutted him. Index reported that it was Tomislav Mrkonjić, a former footballer who during his career played for several clubs, including Zwolle, RNK Split, Rudeš and Croatia from Zmijavci.
According to the same reports, after the blow the opposing player fell to the ground, and some media outlets also reported that his eyebrow arcade was split. This information has not been officially confirmed in the available sources by a medical institution or the police, so it should be treated as a claim from media sources and from the circle of the injured player's team. There is no available official information about possible police action, a misdemeanor report or disciplinary measures outside the framework of the competition itself. What has been confirmed from the organizers' announcement is that the match was stopped and that a decision on disqualification was made.
The organizers cited the rulebook and fair play
GOAT League and SC Klinček issued a statement after the incident on social media, which was reported by Croatian media. That statement said that, due to a violation of the rules, one of the finalist teams had been disqualified from the competition and that the final had been registered by an official decision of the organizers. The organizers also said that they distance themselves from every form of inappropriate behavior, insults, threats and actions that undermine the integrity of the competition, the sporting spirit and fair play.
In the same statement, according to the text reported by Slobodna Dalmacija, GOAT League and SC Klinček stated that during the season they had tried to build a competition based on respect for opponents, referees, organizers and spectators. They also emphasized that they would continue to implement these principles in the future and said that no one is above the rules of the competition, regardless of the result or stage of the tournament. Such wording indicates that the decision on disqualification was made as a disciplinary and organizational measure, regardless of the importance of the match and the status of the participants.
For GOAT League, which in recent months has profiled itself as a competition with strong media and social resonance, the incident happened at a particularly sensitive moment. Competition finales usually attract the most spectators, the most followers on social networks and the greatest public interest. In such a context, the organizers' decision to immediately stop the match and register the final through an official procedure sends a message that the boundary of acceptable behavior does not move even in the most important matches.
What was seen in the broadcast and what was later removed
According to the 24sata report, the incident could be seen in the broadcast on the GOAT League YouTube channel, and the recording was later removed from the competition's official channel. Index also reported that the unpleasant scenes could be followed in the live broadcast and that the video of the incident was subsequently deleted according to available claims. The fact that the event took place in front of cameras further accelerated the spread of information because clips and descriptions of the incident very quickly ended up on portals and social networks.
Media descriptions of the event state that the clash was preceded by a short verbal exchange. Index reported that after headbutting the opposing player, Martinjak additionally hit him with the ball while he was lying on the pitch. That circumstance further intensified public reactions because it was a situation outside sporting competition and after the player was already on the ground. The available official statements by the organizers do not set out the details of every move on the pitch, but instead emphasize the violation of the rulebook and the undermining of the competition's principles.
In cases like this, footage of the event often plays a key role in public perception of the incident, but in itself it does not replace the official decisions of the organizers or any actions by the competent authorities if they occur. At present, the decision of the competition organizers is publicly known, while information about possible further steps has not been officially announced. It is therefore important to distinguish confirmed elements, such as the interruption of the match and the disqualification, from claims coming from media reports or unofficial circles.
Martinjak spoke out and said he had made a mistake
According to Index, Marko Martinjak spoke out after the incident under one post on Facebook and presented his version of events. In that post, he claimed that the opposing player had provoked his players during the match and that at one point the opposing players rushed toward one player from his team. Martinjak stated that the player then got in his face, insulted him and mentioned his mother, after which, as he himself wrote, he reacted "hot-headedly".
Although he tried to explain the circumstances that preceded the incident, Martinjak admitted in the same post that he should not have hit the opposing player. According to Index, he wrote that it was his mistake that he did it and that he later apologized to Mrkonjić. He also stated that the other player apologized to him as well because of the insults and provocations, and added that the opposing player was fine. For now, these claims are available as Martinjak's personal version of events, and not as an independent official report by the organizers or the competent authorities.
His apology does not change the fact that the organizer had already made a disciplinary decision within the framework of the competition. In sporting terms, the consequence of the incident was immediate and very concrete: the team for which Martinjak played as a representative was left without the possibility of completing the final, and the finale was concluded by an administrative decision. For a competition based on a combination of sporting results, an entertainment format and public visibility, such an outcome represents a serious blow to the season finale.
GOAT League developed into a visible Zagreb futsal competition
GOAT League is a futsal competition played at Klinček in Zagreb, and it became known to the public for the participation of former and active footballers, athletes and public figures. According to Index's description, it is a format inspired by the King's League, a competition launched in Spain by former footballer Gerard Piqué. Such a concept combines elements of futsal, entertainment, social networks and live broadcasts, with which the competition seeks to distinguish itself from classic recreational leagues.
In March 2026, Sportske novosti described GOAT League as an increasingly visible Zagreb football event that brings together 12 teams, has broadcasts on YouTube and attracts great public interest at Klinček. The same article mentions well-known names who were present or participated in the program, among them Niko Kranjčar, Milan Badelj, Josip Pivarić, Jerko Leko and Luis Ibanez, while other media reports also mention Mario Mandžukić and other former and current footballers. It is precisely this mixture of sporting competition and public recognizability that contributed to the league's popularity, but it also increased the organizers' responsibility in cases of inappropriate behavior.
Klinček, according to data published on the sports center's official website, operates at Ulica Dragojla Kušlana 52 in Zagreb. It is a location that has been known among recreational footballers for years, and GOAT League gave it additional visibility through regular matches, posts on social networks and broadcasts. For that reason, the incident from the final did not remain limited to the circle of participants, but became a wider sports story.
Marko Martinjak's profile further increased public interest
Additional public attention was caused by the fact that Marko Martinjak, one of the best-known Croatian bare-knuckle boxers, took part in the incident. According to Gol.hr, in October 2025 Martinjak knocked out Dan Podmore in Leeds and won the bridgerweight title belt, thereby becoming a two-time world champion in the BKB organization because he had previously also held the belt in the super cruiserweight category. Index states that he has competed in BKB since 2016 and that he is among the more recognizable names on the international bare-knuckle scene.
Precisely because of his combat-sports career, the physical incident in a futsal match acquired additional weight. Athletes who practice combat disciplines professionally or semi-professionally are often viewed by the public through stricter criteria when it comes to controlling reactions outside the fighting arena. This does not mean that other participants are freed from responsibility for verbal provocations or unsporting behavior, if there were any, but a physical attack on the pitch cannot be viewed as a normal part of sporting competition.
Martinjak's sporting biography had already previously been the subject of media attention, not only because of his results but also because of his open statements about difficult periods in his life. In earlier articles, Index recalled his professional boxing career before his move to bare-knuckle boxing, as well as the fact that he had publicly spoken about addiction, a criminal past and a prison sentence. In this case, however, what is decisive for the sports public is his behavior during the specific match and the organizers' decision to sanction such behavior.
The incident opened the question of the limits of an entertaining sports format
GOAT League is part of a broader trend of sports formats that rely on short matches, social networks, live broadcasts, well-known participants and constant interaction with the audience. Such projects can attract a new audience and give additional energy to recreational sport, but at the same time they carry the risk that competitive tension, the crowd and visibility on the internet turn into pressure that participants find harder to control. When the line between sport, entertainment and personal rivalry becomes blurred, organizers must have clear rules and the readiness to enforce them.
The decision by GOAT League and SC Klinček to distance themselves from inappropriate behavior and emphasize that no one is above the rules therefore has significance beyond one final match. It is also a message to participants in future seasons that the attractiveness of the format must not be more important than player safety, respect for the opponent and the audience's trust. For a competition that wants to grow, especially with live broadcasts and publicly recognizable participants, consistent application of the rulebook becomes a prerequisite for credibility.
For now, there is no officially published information on whether the incident will have consequences outside the competition itself. It is known that the match was stopped, that Martinjak's team was disqualified and that the final was concluded by a decision of the organizers. Further developments will depend on possible official reports, internal league decisions and the way in which GOAT League will further regulate communication, disciplinary rules and safety protocols in its upcoming appearances and seasons.
