HSV said goodbye to Luka Vušković with a message in Croatian and a video of his best moments

Hamburger SV said goodbye to Luka Vušković with a message in Croatian and a video of his best moments, bringing to an end one of the club season’s most notable loan spells. Alongside a post on the social network X, the Hamburg club wrote: Thank you for everything, LV 44, adding emojis of a heart formed with fingers and the Croatian flag. The message was published after a season in which the young Croatian defender, wearing the HSV shirt, earned the status of one of the team’s most recognizable players, even though he had arrived at the club only on a one-year loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The farewell video shows the moves that marked his spell in Hamburg: powerful duels, aerial play, composure in defence, danger from set pieces and goals with which he showed that he is not only a classic centre-back but a player who can change the course of matches even in the opponent’s penalty area. HSV’s decision to publish the message in Croatian further underlined the relationship that developed between the club, the fans and a player who, in a short period, became an important part of the team. In modern football, loans often remain passing episodes, but Vušković’s stay at the Volksparkstadion took on a different tone.

According to HSV’s official announcement, Vušković arrived at the club at the end of August 2025 as an 18-year-old central defender on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2025/26 season. The club emphasized at the time that he was one of the most interesting young Croatian footballers, while sporting director Stefan Kuntz said that HSV had worked for a long time on bringing him in. Director of football Claus Costa described him as a modern centre-back with physical strength, heading ability, toughness in duels, courage on the ball and a threat from set pieces. It was precisely these characteristics that, during the season, became the foundation of his status in the team.

From loaned talent to a player who will be remembered

Vušković’s arrival in Hamburg had a strong sporting and emotional context from the beginning. Ahead of the season, HSV relied on reinforcements who could immediately raise competitiveness, and the young Croatian defender joined a club that had returned to the Bundesliga and once again had to prove itself at the highest German level. According to Tottenham’s official announcement, the loan to HSV was agreed for the entire 2025/26 season, after Vušković joined the London club from Hajduk in July. Tottenham also stated that the young defender had already played for Spurs in pre-season and scored and assisted in a match against Reading.

In Hamburg, he did not remain merely a development project of a major English club, but quickly became a player with a concrete role. According to official Bundesliga data, Vušković made 27 league appearances in the 2025/26 season, scored six goals, won 316 duels and 153 aerial duels. For a centre-back of his age, such an impact is particularly significant because it shows that he stood out not only through potential but also through continuity in a league in which defenders are required to have reaction speed, physical stability, tactical discipline and the ability to play under pressure.

The six Bundesliga goals further explain why his farewell caused such a strong response. Defenders who regularly threaten from set pieces have great value, and Vušković showed at HSV that he can be dangerous even in situations that go beyond defensive duties. During the season, Tottenham particularly highlighted his spectacular scorpion-kick goal in HSV’s victory against Werder Bremen, stating that with that move he gave the team the lead in a dramatic match at the Volksparkstadion. Such moments create fan memory and often remain more important than the statistics themselves.

On 18 May 2026, HSV announced that it was thanking six loan players: Fábio Vieira, Luka Vušković, Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Albert Grønbæk, Philip Otele and Damion Downs. The club stated that together they made 116 competitive appearances for HSV during the season and that, according to the situation at the time, they would return to their parent clubs on 1 July. In that announcement, Vušković was singled out as part of a group of players who helped the team, but the farewell video in Croatian shows that his individual mark was especially recognized.

The number 44 and the Vušković family’s connection with Hamburg

Vušković’s number 44 at HSV had additional symbolism because it had previously been worn at the same club by his older brother Mario Vušković. Even when presenting Luka, HSV emphasized that family connection, and the club stated that many familiar faces welcomed him at the Volksparkstadion. For a young player arriving in a demanding league, such a context can be important, especially at a club with a great tradition and strong expectations from supporters.

Hamburg is a football environment in which players are asked for more than simply doing their job properly. HSV is one of the most recognizable German clubs, with a large fan base and pressure that does not disappear even after years spent away from the top. In such surroundings, Vušković had to show quickly that he could play senior football at a high level. In doing so, he managed to retain the composure and confidence that had followed him since his time at Hajduk, where he entered the first team at a very young age.

His profile is especially interesting because of the combination of height, physical strength and technical assurance. The Bundesliga lists him as a defender 193 centimetres tall, which explains his dominance in aerial duels, but his impact is not limited only to aerial play. At HSV, he often took part in building attacks, took responsibility in passing and entered duels far from his own penalty area. This is the type of centre-back that modern football increasingly demands: a player who can defend, build play and bring an advantage from set pieces.

The farewell message Thank you for everything, LV 44 is therefore not just a formality after the expiry of a loan. It sums up a season in which the young Croatian international became part of the story of HSV’s return and stabilization in the Bundesliga. The number 44 connected family history, fan emotions and sporting impact into one recognizable image. That is precisely why the club did not opt for a neutral administrative announcement, but for a personal tone and the language of the country the player comes from.

Tottenham get a player with serious Bundesliga experience

Back in 2023, Tottenham announced that they had agreed Luka Vušković’s arrival with Hajduk, on a contract until 2030. The English club emphasized at the time that Vušković had made his debut for Hajduk’s first team as a 16-year-old, become the youngest player in Croatian top-flight football and the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Split club. Those facts explain why Tottenham secured his signature early and why a loan to the Bundesliga was an important step in his planned development.

The season at HSV now gives Tottenham a much more concrete picture. Vušković is not returning from loan as a player with a few symbolic appearances, but as a defender who completed a full competitive year in one of Europe’s strongest leagues. According to official Bundesliga data, he played 27 league matches, scored six goals and was among the standout young players of the season. That is a significantly firmer basis for assessing his readiness than a loan in a weaker competitive environment would have provided.

For Tottenham, the next step will be to assess where Vušković can continue his development most quickly. The Premier League brings a different kind of pressure, a greater speed of play and even stronger competition in the squad, but the Bundesliga has given him experience that is difficult to replace through training. He played against forwards of different profiles, in high-intensity matches and in a team that could not rely on constant dominance of possession. That means he had to defend large spaces, solve crisis situations and make decisions under pressure.

For HSV, his departure is a sporting loss, but also confirmation that the club can be a quality development environment for loan players from Europe’s biggest leagues. If a young footballer from Tottenham’s system gets minutes in Hamburg, becomes a regular, scores six goals and leaves with a strong farewell from the fans, that can help the club in future negotiations for similar loans. Vušković’s example shows that HSV can offer loan players more than a short-term stay: it can offer them a stage on which their status truly changes.

An important development for the Croatian national team as well

Vušković’s progress is also important in the context of the Croatian national team. The Croatian Football Federation lists him in its official profile as a member of the senior national team, with his first appearance on 9 June 2025, and according to the same source he has so far made four appearances and scored one goal for the senior national team. In its announcement of the loan to HSV, Tottenham also stated that Vušković had already made his debut for Croatia in a qualifying match against Czechia. For a player born in 2007, that is an exceptionally early inclusion at senior international level.

Croatia is gradually building a new generation in the defensive line, and a defender with Bundesliga experience and a contract with Tottenham naturally attracts attention. Vušković’s profile fits the needs of a modern national team: he is tall, strong in the air, dangerous from set pieces and assured enough on the ball to take part in building attacks. If his development continues without interruption, he can become an important part of the long-term plans of Croatia’s coaching staff.

At the same time, it is important to maintain a realistic measure. Vušković is still very young, and the path from great talent to regular player at a club from the top of European football is rarely linear. Ahead of him are competition, adaptation to new demands and the fight for minutes. But the season at HSV showed that he copes well with pressure, that he can play in a demanding environment and that his qualities are not only a projection of the future but already a visible senior-level impact.

The farewell from Hamburg therefore has a broader meaning than the end of one loan. For HSV, it is a parting with a player who marked the season and left an impression of maturity. For Tottenham, it is the return of a defender who gained serious competitive confirmation in one year. For Croatian football, it is another proof that Vušković’s development should be followed as one of the most important stories of the new generation.

A farewell that confirms how quickly his status has grown

HSV’s video and message in Croatian conclude a story that began as a loan and ended as a relationship with clear emotional value. In one season, Vušković went from a player arriving for development to a centre-back whose departure is specially marked. That does not happen by chance, but because of performances, goals, attitude toward the club and the impression he left on the fans.

According to the available official data, his return to Tottenham is planned after the end of the loan, and HSV stated that the loaned players are currently expected to return to their parent clubs on 1 July. Until then, what remains is the impression of a season in which Luka Vušković took a big step in Hamburg toward the highest European level. The farewell sentence Thank you for everything, LV 44 therefore sounds short, but carries much more than the usual club courtesy.

For the young Croatian defender, a new phase now begins, with greater expectations and greater attention. Hamburg gave him space, the Bundesliga as a test and fans who accepted him. In return, he left goals, duels, impressive moves and a season that will be remembered at HSV as the year in which the number 44 once again had special meaning.
