Junior Brumado's serious injury complicates Dinamo's plan: pre-contract remains in place, decision after recovery
The arrival of Brazilian striker Junior Brumado at Zagreb's Dinamo, which according to media reports had already been agreed for January 2027, suddenly became uncertain after a serious knee injury. FC Midtjylland announced on 16 July 2026 that the 27-year-old centre-forward had been injured in training and would not be available to the team for the rest of the year. That timeframe directly overlaps with the period in which Brumado is expected to complete his contract with the Danish club and move to Zagreb as a free agent. In its brief official statement, Midtjylland did not specify the exact diagnosis, the affected structure of the knee or the expected date of his return to full training, so it is currently impossible to reliably assess whether the Brazilian will be ready for competitive football at the beginning of 2027. The injury therefore does not automatically mean that the agreement will be terminated, but it forces Dinamo to conduct a significantly more complex sporting, medical and contractual assessment than the one that existed when the pre-contract was signed.
The injury came at the most sensitive moment
According to information from the Danish outlet Campo, Brumado injured his knee during training on Tuesday, 14 July, and Midtjylland coach Mike Tullberg said the very next day that the situation did not look good, while noting that the medical diagnosis had to be awaited. The club subsequently confirmed that it was a serious injury that would prevent the striker from playing for the remainder of 2026. This is a particularly unfavourable moment for a player whose contract with Midtjylland expires on 31 December 2026 and who was seeking the next step in his career after a very good season. Brumado was supposed to use the summer and autumn months to maintain his form, preserve his competitive rhythm and prepare for a change of club, but instead he now faces a lengthy treatment and rehabilitation process. Since Midtjylland has not yet published details of the injury, it has not been officially confirmed whether surgery will be required or how much time after the end of the calendar year he will need to return to full-contact training.
For Dinamo, the key distinction is between the administrative possibility of registering the player and his actual ability to help the team immediately. Even if Brumado formally joins the Zagreb club in January 2027, a break lasting several months may mean that he will need an additional period to regain strength, mobility, his feel for the game and resistance to full competitive exertion. With serious knee injuries, the return date is not determined only by the calendar, but also by rehabilitation results, functional tests and the player's response to a gradual increase in workload. Therefore, the mere fact that he might complete the basic part of his recovery by winter would not necessarily mean that he is ready for matches. According to the available information, Dinamo will therefore base its decision on a detailed medical examination and an assessment of his condition ahead of the planned arrival.
The pre-contract has been signed, but the details are not public
Sportske novosti reported on 9 July 2026 that Brumado had signed a pre-contract with Dinamo under which he was expected to arrive without a transfer fee after his contract with Midtjylland expired. The same source stated that a four-year contract was planned, with an option to extend it for another season, and that the annual salary would not exceed 750,000 euros. By 16 July, neither Dinamo nor Midtjylland had presented the transfer as a completed deal through their official channels, so the publicly available information about the contractual terms is based on media reports. Without access to the signed document, it is impossible to determine whether the pre-contract contains special provisions relating to a medical examination, a long-term injury or the possibility of changing the agreed terms. Such clauses could be decisive if it turns out that Brumado will remain out of action even after the beginning of 2027.
After the news of the injury, the possibility emerged that Dinamo might withdraw from the transfer, but according to new information from Sportske novosti, the Zagreb club has not taken such a step for now. Sporting director Dario Dabac is expected to support the player during his recovery, while the key checkpoint is planned for December, when Brumado is expected to come to Zagreb for a medical examination. Only after the examination and an assessment of the course of rehabilitation should it become clearer whether the original plan can be implemented, whether its timing needs to be adjusted or whether the entire deal will have to be reconsidered. Such an approach gives Dinamo room not to make a decision based on the first information about the injury, but at the same time it does not eliminate the risk that an important squad decision will be postponed until the very end of the year. For a club that plans its team several transfer windows in advance, this means that it must simultaneously monitor other options for the centre-forward position.
The season that brought Brumado back into the spotlight
The injury interrupted a period in which Brumado had rebuilt his status as an important Midtjylland player. According to data published by Sportske novosti, he made 43 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, scored 16 goals and added two assists. The Danish club's official profile lists 16 goals during his most recent spell with the team and a total of 135 appearances and 29 goals for Midtjylland. He stood out in particular on 15 February 2026, when he scored a first-half hat-trick in a 4:1 league victory over OB. Performances like these put him back on the market as a physically powerful striker who can play with his back to goal, attack space inside the penalty area and give the team a pronounced presence in the final third.
Brumado was known to Dinamo's supporters even before the information about the pre-contract emerged. In the Europa League league-phase match on 29 January 2026, he started for Midtjylland against Dinamo and played until the 79th minute, while the Danish side won 2:0 in Herning. That match was part of his most successful season after returning from loan spells, during which he also featured in high-intensity European fixtures. Back in the summer of 2025, he attracted attention with a spectacular bicycle-kick goal against Hibernian near the end of extra time, which secured Midtjylland's progress in European qualifying. In a later interview, the club described that moment as one of the turning points in his return to the first team. Brumado said at the time that he had changed his attitude towards training, started arriving at the gym earlier and took physical preparation more seriously, which made his 2025/26 season even more important in the context of the next stage of his career.
A career marked by rises, loan spells and previous injuries
Junior Brumado was born on 15 May 1999 in Brazil, is 190 centimetres tall and joined Midtjylland from Bahia in January 2019. In 2022, the Danish club officially extended his contract until the end of 2026, describing him at the time as a striker with great potential who had made visible progress after an initial adaptation period. His path in Denmark, however, was not linear. According to the official club profile, he played on loan at Silkeborg, Germany's Hansa Rostock and Brazil's Coritiba, and began to establish himself more seriously in Midtjylland's first team again during 2025. Precisely because of earlier periods without continuity, the most recent season represented important confirmation that he could play and score regularly at the level of the Danish league and European competitions.
His medical history further explains why Dinamo will assess the new injury cautiously. In May 2022, Midtjylland announced that Brumado had sustained a knee injury after a match against Brøndby, and another lengthy absence followed later that same year. In a subsequent club interview, the Brazilian spoke openly about the injuries, problems and disappointments that slowed the development of his career, but also about the change in his professional habits. The new injury does not necessarily have any direct connection with his previous problems, and the club has not published medical details that would allow such a conclusion. Nevertheless, the fact that he has already gone through lengthy rehabilitation periods will be important to the doctors assessing his readiness, the risk of recurring problems and the plan for returning to the level required by Dinamo's demands.
What the injury means for Dinamo's strategy
According to the original plan, Brumado was supposed to represent a long-term option at the top of the attack, while his arrival without a transfer fee would have reduced the initial cost of the transfer. Such deals, however, are not without financial risk because the club assumes obligations relating to salary, bonuses, rehabilitation and a multi-year contract, while the player's value depends on his ability to play regularly. The injury therefore changes the calculation even if the basic agreement can formally remain in place. Dinamo must now assess whether it will receive a striker ready for the spring part of 2027, a player who will need several additional months of gradual introduction or a footballer whose return is still difficult to predict. Each of these scenarios has different consequences for squad planning, the distribution of minutes and the possible signing of another centre-forward.
It is also important that the decision is not based solely on a current image of the knee. The medical examination in December should cover rehabilitation progress, joint stability, muscle strength, movement symmetry and the ability to withstand football-specific workloads, but a final assessment often also requires monitoring the response to full training. If the findings are favourable, Dinamo could retain the agreement and gradually introduce Brumado into the team. If the recovery is slower than expected, changes to the timing of his arrival, the contractual terms or the sporting plan are possible, although none of this has currently been officially confirmed. The most unfavourable scenario would be withdrawal from the transfer, but according to information published on 16 July, Dinamo has not made such a decision for now. At least at this stage, the club has decided to wait for a more reliable medical picture instead of declaring the deal completed or collapsed.
The coming months will determine the outcome of the agreement
For Brumado, a period now begins in which his sporting future will depend primarily on the quality and speed of his recovery. Before the injury, he was in a strong negotiating position: his contract was expiring, he had a 16-goal season behind him, and according to reports he had already agreed to continue his career with Dinamo. The serious knee injury changed the circumstances within a few days, but it did not erase the performances he had produced or the interest he had previously generated. Dinamo will receive increasingly reliable information about his condition over the coming months, and the December examination should provide the most important basis for the final decision. Until then, the most cautious formulation remains valid: according to the available information, the pre-contract exists, the Zagreb club has not withdrawn, but the completion of his arrival in January 2027 can no longer be regarded as a routine and certain conclusion to an already agreed deal.
