Olympic wrestling qualifications for Los Angeles 2028 begin in Las Vegas

Las Vegas will be the first major destination on the Olympic wrestling qualification path for the Los Angeles 2028 Games in September 2027. United World Wrestling and USA Wrestling announced that the 2027 Senior World Championships will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center, an arena on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, from September 11 to 19, 2027. According to UWW's announcement, that competition will have double importance: it will be a world showcase of the best male and female wrestlers, but also the first tournament at which direct Olympic quotas for LA 2028 will be distributed.

The decision was announced as part of the Pan-American Championships held in Coralville, Iowa, from May 7 to 10, 2026, UWW states. The World Championships in Las Vegas will mark the return of the senior world showcase to the United States after 12 years, as the USA last hosted that competition in 2015. For spectators who will follow the competition on site, Las Vegas will be a sports center with direct significance for the Olympic cycle, and accommodation offers in Las Vegas may also be useful during the championship period.

The World Championships carry the first 72 Olympic quotas

According to the rules of the qualification process published by United World Wrestling, the first 72 Olympic wrestling quotas will be distributed at the 2027 World Championships. The quotas will not be won by individuals for themselves personally, but for their national Olympic committees, which is customary in Olympic qualification systems in a number of sports. Medalists in the 18 Olympic weight categories, that is, the winners of gold, silver and two bronze medals in each category, will bring their national Olympic committees places for the Games in Los Angeles.

Such a schedule means that the World Championships in Las Vegas will be much more than a fight for the title of world champion. For national teams, it will be the first major test of Olympic strategy, because success in September 2027 will enable earlier planning for appearances at the Games. UWW announced that in Los Angeles 2028, 16 male or female wrestlers will compete in each Olympic category. The overall qualification system is therefore divided into several clearly separated paths, so that Olympic places can be filled through the world championship, the rankings, continental qualifications and the final world qualification tournament.

Four paths to appearing at the Games

United World Wrestling announced a redesigned qualification model for the 2028 Olympic Games in February 2026. According to that model, Olympic places in wrestling will be awarded through four channels: the 2027 World Championships, the UWW rankings, continental Olympic qualifications and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament. The first phase will be precisely the competition in Las Vegas, where medalists in Olympic categories will bring a total of 72 quotas.

The second phase will be connected with the UWW rankings, which will include results from key competitions before the Games. UWW stated that the 2027 and 2028 continental championships, three Ranking Series tournaments in 2027, one Ranking Series tournament in 2028 and the 2027 World Championships will be counted in that ranking. According to the published system, the three best-ranked male or female wrestlers in each Olympic category who have not previously qualified will bring additional quotas to their national Olympic committees. Another 54 places will thus be awarded through the rankings.

The third phase will include continental Olympic qualifications for Europe, Asia, Pan-America and the joint region of Africa and Oceania. According to UWW, the finalists of those tournaments will win quotas for their national Olympic committees, two in each Olympic category at each continental qualification competition. A total of 144 places will be distributed through the continental qualifications. The final phase will be the World Olympic Qualification Tournament, where the winners in 18 Olympic categories will win the last quotas.

The calendar begins as early as February 2027

Although the first direct quotas will be awarded in Las Vegas, the qualification cycle will begin earlier. According to the calendar published by UWW on May 1, 2026, the first event of the Olympic qualification cycle will be a Ranking Series tournament from February 15 to 21, 2027. That competition will not directly distribute Olympic quotas, but it will be important because of points for the UWW rankings and later positioning in the qualification system.

After the first Ranking Series tournament, the 2027 senior continental championships will follow. The Asian Championships are scheduled from March 30 to April 4, the European Championships from April 5 to 11, and the African Championships from April 12 to 18. The Oceania Championships should be held from April 23 to 25, while the Pan-American Championships are planned from April 28 to May 2. UWW also announced a second Ranking Series tournament from May 31 to June 6 and a third from July 19 to 25, before the peak of 2027 in Las Vegas.

The World Championships in Las Vegas, scheduled from September 11 to 19, 2027, will be the last major competition in 2027 that carries points for the qualification ranking. Its importance will therefore be twofold: the medalists will win direct quotas, while other results will affect the athletes' position in the continuation of the Olympic cycle. For national teams that do not manage to reach a quota in Las Vegas, the points and standings after that competition could become decisive in the continued fight for Los Angeles.

The year of decision will be 2028

The qualification cycle will continue in January 2028 with the only Ranking Series tournament that year, scheduled from January 17 to 23, UWW announced. After that, the 2028 continental championships will follow, which will also carry ranking points. The Oceania Championships are planned from February 18 to 20, the Pan-American Championships from February 24 to 27, the European Championships from February 28 to March 5, the Asian Championships from March 6 to 12, and the African Championships from March 14 to 19.

According to UWW's calendar, after the end of the 2028 African Championships, Olympic quotas will be awarded based on the rankings. Only then will the series of continental Olympic qualifications follow. The African-Oceanian qualifications are scheduled from March 24 to 26, 2028, the Pan-American qualifications from March 31 to April 2, the European qualifications from April 7 to 9, and the Asian qualifications from April 14 to 16. The last opportunity will be the World Olympic Qualification Tournament from May 18 to 21, 2028.

Such an order should make it possible first to conclude the quotas based on ranking, and then for the continental and world qualification tournaments to fill the remaining places. UWW also stated a restriction for the final world qualification tournament: only countries that have not previously won a quota in a specific part of the system will be able to participate, and states will be able to send a limited number of representatives in all styles to the final tournament. This turns the final phase into a competition for the remaining national Olympic committees, rather than a repeat of earlier qualification opportunities for countries that have already qualified.

Las Vegas gets a competition with major sporting and organizational weight

The Thomas & Mack Center, according to information from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is a multipurpose arena with a capacity of about 18,500 seats. In its announcement, UWW stated that it is a historic arena on the UNLV campus, while USA Wrestling emphasized that Las Vegas will provide a strong experience for athletes and spectators ahead of the 2028 Games. USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said, according to UWW, that the American federation is thrilled by the return of the World Championships to American soil for the first time since 2015.

Hosting the event in Las Vegas is also important because of its geographical and symbolic position in relation to Los Angeles, which will host the Olympic Games the following year. The competition will be held in the state of Nevada, but in the broader American sporting context it will be part of the preparation for the Games in California. For fans, federations and media, this means that already in 2027 part of the attention of Olympic wrestling will move to the western part of the United States. Given the nine-day duration of the competition, visitors planning their arrival can also follow accommodation near the Thomas & Mack Center in good time.

What the new system means for national teams

The new qualification system emphasizes continuous performance over a longer period. National teams can no longer view only one final tournament as the key moment, but must plan the entire cycle from February 2027 to May 2028. The World Championships in Las Vegas will be the biggest individual opportunity at the beginning of that process because they immediately bring 72 quotas, but the rankings and continental competitions open additional opportunities for those who do not reach a medal.

UWW also announced changes to the seeding system. According to the published rules, Ranking Series tournaments, world championships and the Olympic Games will have eight seeds, while continental championships, continental qualifications and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament will have four seeds. For the 2028 Olympic Games, seeding will be determined based on results from Ranking Series tournaments, continental championships and the 2027 World Championships, as well as competitions from 2028. UWW also stated an important difference: at the Olympic Games, the seeding belongs to the country, while at other competitions it belongs to the athlete himself or herself.

That change can affect the way national federations assemble teams. If a country wins seeded status, it keeps it for the Games even if another athlete from that country ultimately competes. In other competitions, according to UWW, a change of athlete also means the loss of seeding. Such rules increase the importance of national selection decisions and may further emphasize internal competition in countries with multiple top wrestlers in the same category.

Wrestling at the Olympic Games will be held from July 24 to 30, 2028

According to UWW's calendar, the Olympic wrestling competition in Los Angeles 2028 will be held from July 24 to 30. By then, through all qualification phases, 16 places in each of the 18 Olympic categories will be filled. Wrestling will continue to take place through the Olympic styles of freestyle wrestling for men and women and Greco-Roman wrestling for men, with division into weight categories.

For athletes and national federations, the announcement of hosting in Las Vegas provides a clear first point on the Olympic path. For organizers in the United States, it is an opportunity to present wrestling to a large audience one year before the Games in Los Angeles and connect the world championship with the Olympic narrative. For the competition itself, the most important thing remains what will happen on the mat: every medal in an Olympic category in September 2027 will also mean the first concrete step toward appearing at the 2028 Games.
