Neuer announces the end of a great career: "I will very likely leave after the season"
Manuel Neuer has entered preparations for the 2026/27 season with his clearest indication yet that one of the most influential goalkeeping careers in modern football is approaching its end. The 40-year-old Bayern captain said during the training camp in Rottach-Egern, in the Lake Tegernsee area of Bavaria, that everything currently strongly suggests he will stop playing when his contract with the German champions expires on 30 June 2027. However, he has not yet formally announced his final decision, leaving a small possibility that circumstances may change during the season.
His message was not intended to mark the beginning of a months-long farewell tour. Neuer stressed that he does not want to view every match through the prism of it being his final appearance at a particular stadium, nor allow thoughts about the end of his career to push sporting objectives into the background. According to him, he is entering the new season because he still believes he can help the team, not because he wants to collect symbolic farewells. It is precisely this distinction that shows why his statement, although very direct, is still not the same as an official retirement announcement.
Departure was already very close this summer
Neuer admitted that he had seriously considered ending his career before extending his contract. Speaking to journalists, he estimated that in approximately 85 percent of possible scenarios he would have stopped playing after the 2025/26 season. The remaining 15 percent, as he explained, consisted of his satisfaction with the daily work, his relationship with the team and coaching staff, and his conviction that Bayern still have a squad capable of competing for the biggest trophies. That combination of sporting challenge and positive atmosphere ultimately convinced him to sign another one-year contract.
He cited similar reasons in May, when Bayern officially confirmed the extension of their cooperation until the summer of 2027. Neuer told the club's website at the time that he still felt ready, that he enjoyed coming to training at Säbener Straße, and that he saw the potential to win every competition in the team and coaching staff led by Vincent Kompany. He added that he had taken his time over the decision because he needed to assess his own health, performance level and long-term benefit to the club. His latest statement therefore does not represent a sudden change of direction, but a public acknowledgement that the new contract was probably intended from the beginning as the final chapter.
Support from family and friends also played an important role. Neuer said that he makes the decision to continue his career primarily for himself and because he feels he can still be useful to the team, but that the support of those closest to him is also important. After two decades of professional football, numerous injuries, comebacks and seasons under almost constant pressure, such an assessment is no longer limited solely to sporting form. It also concerns the readiness to cope with the daily rhythm of training, travel, recovery and the responsibility that comes with the captaincy at one of Europe's biggest clubs.
No farewell tour and no final announcement
Although he said that "everything strongly suggests" the end will come after the season, Neuer carefully avoided an irreversible formulation. His intention is to play the season competitively, without the ceremonial tone that could accompany every away appearance. This means that he will not say farewell in advance to every stadium where he might play for the last time, nor will individual matches be presented as separate conclusions to his career. Such an approach corresponds with his long-standing public image as a player focused on results, preparation and control of details.
Bayern have also not announced any special farewell plan at this stage. In May, the club presented the contract extension as a sporting decision and part of a clearly defined goalkeeping structure for the 2026/27 season. Neuer remains captain and the primary reference point of the goalkeeping group, Sven Ulreich retains the role of experienced backup, while Jonas Urbig continues his development as a project for the future. The management said at the time that each of the three goalkeepers had a defined role and that Neuer and Ulreich would help Urbig prepare for the period after their generation.
Such a model allows Bayern to avoid making the transition abruptly. Instead of immediately searching for a completely new solution after Neuer's departure, the club is already developing a younger goalkeeper within the squad who trains every day with one of the most experienced players in European football. Sporting director Max Eberl described Urbig's path in May as part of a long-term plan, while chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasised that Neuer had pushed the boundaries of the goalkeeping position over the years. For Bayern, the final season of their captain is therefore simultaneously an attempt to win trophies and preparation for a change that will affect one of the most stable positions at the club.
The final major goal could be Madrid
Neuer does not hide the fact that his ideal ending would include another major international trophy. Bayern concluded the 2025/26 season by winning the domestic double, the Bundesliga and the German Cup, their first such achievement since 2020. In the Champions League, they reached the semi-finals, where Paris Saint-Germain eliminated them 6-5 on aggregate after two highly attacking matches. That result showed that the team had come close to a European final, but also how small the difference is between a successful season and achieving the greatest objective.
The 2026/27 Champions League final will be played on 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, UEFA has confirmed. Reaching that match would give Neuer the opportunity to end his career with a third European title, following Bayern's triumphs in 2013 and 2020. For now, such a scenario is only a sporting ambition, not a prediction or expectation, because Bayern must first navigate a demanding league phase and a multi-round knockout stage. Nevertheless, the fact that the conclusion of the season coincides with the possible end of his career gives the European competition additional symbolic weight.
Domestic trophies also remain important. In the spring of 2026, Bayern won the 35th German championship and the 21st German Cup in the club's history, confirming their return to complete dominance at national level. With 13 Bundesliga titles, Neuer is tied at the top of the competition's all-time winners' list, according to the league's official website. One more title would give him the record outright and further complete an era in which he has been one of Bayern's defining symbols.
A career that changed expectations of goalkeepers
Neuer joined Bayern from Schalke in the summer of 2011, after already establishing himself in the Bundesliga and the German national team. Since then, he has become a central figure in one of the most successful eras in the history of the Munich club. He took over the captain's armband in 2017 and won two trebles with Bayern, combining the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League in the 2012/13 and 2019/20 seasons. When announcing the contract extension in May, the club stated that he was approaching 600 competitive appearances for Bayern.
His influence, however, cannot be measured solely through trophies and appearances. For years, Neuer played significantly farther from his goal line than had previously been customary for goalkeepers, took on the role of an additional defender during build-up play and used his speed to intercept balls behind a high defensive line. Such a style was not entirely new, but he made it the standard at the highest level against which modern goalkeepers began to be assessed. Candidates for the biggest clubs are now routinely expected to possess quality with the ball at their feet, composure under pressure and the ability to participate in organising attacks, and Neuer was one of the most important players in that transformation.
The Bundesliga's official website also lists a series of records confirming his longevity. By mid-May 2026, he had made 544 appearances in the German championship, while conceding fewer goals than the number of matches he had played. He is also the only goalkeeper to have twice won the treble of the domestic league, cup and Champions League. He has been named the world's best goalkeeper five times by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, and he became a world champion with the German national team in 2014.
Urbig is preparing for a legacy that goes beyond the number on the shirt
The biggest question for Bayern after Neuer's departure will not only be who will play in goal, but also how the team will replace his role in organising play and in the dressing room. Jonas Urbig has already been identified as an important part of the future, and the club is developing him alongside Neuer and Ulreich to make the transition as stable as possible. In practice, that may mean more appearances for the younger goalkeeper, but Bayern have not yet officially announced the precise distribution of playing time for the 2026/27 season. Neuer will therefore enter the new season as captain and a key authority, while Urbig will gradually prepare for a greater burden.
Such a transition requires more than technical work. Neuer's reading of space, communication with the defence and experience in the highest-pressure matches cannot easily be transferred overnight. This is precisely why Bayern emphasise the daily joint work of the goalkeeping group, rather than only the hierarchy on matchday. For Urbig's generation, the opportunity to learn directly from a player who has defined the position is a rare advantage, but it also creates enormous expectations.
Neuer has also made it clear that he does not intend to turn his final season into a personal project. His emphasis remains on the goalkeepers pushing one another and on what benefits the team. That is also important for Kompany's coaching staff, who must balance results in the present with preparing the club for the period after the captain. Every decision regarding playing time will therefore be interpreted both as a sporting choice and as a signal about the pace at which responsibility is being transferred.
A season in which every phase will carry additional weight
Bayern enter the season as defending domestic double winners, with high expectations in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League. For Neuer, every competition will have clear sporting value, but the public will inevitably also follow any signs that might confirm his final retirement decision. He himself is trying to reduce that pressure with the message that he does not want to mark his final appearances in advance. In doing so, he leaves himself room to focus on form and results and to make the official decision when he judges the moment to be appropriate.
The outcome of the season could influence the tone of his farewell, but it does not necessarily have to change his decision. Winning the Champions League would represent an almost cinematic ending, while a domestic league title or cup would also confirm that he departed as a member of a team at the top. On the other hand, injuries, changes in the hierarchy or unexpected sporting developments could accelerate or delay the final announcement. That is precisely why Neuer has remained cautious in his wording: the probability of departure is high, but his professional career is still continuing.
Until the summer of 2027, Bayern will seek to make use of his experience while simultaneously completing the transfer of responsibility to the next generation. Neuer will attempt to add another major trophy to a collection that already includes a World Cup, two Champions League titles and a record number of Bundesliga championships. His words from Bavaria have clearly marked the beginning of the final chapter, but the last page has not yet been written. The results, his health and his personal assessment during the season will determine whether the possibility he has announced becomes a final farewell in June 2027.
