Landaluce fights back in Stuttgart to set up a clash with defending champion Taylor Fritz
Martin Landaluce opened his campaign at the ATP BOSS Open tournament in Stuttgart with a victory that, on the very first day of the main draw, confirmed how demanding and unpredictable the transition to grass courts can be. The twenty-year-old Spaniard defeated French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert after three sets, and according to the official ATP Tour match record the score was 5:7, 6:3, 6:4. The match was played on Monday, 8 June 2026, on the centre court of the Tennisclub Weissenhof tournament complex in Stuttgart and lasted just under two hours and nineteen minutes. After losing the first set, Landaluce gradually took control of the rallies, stabilised his serve and took advantage of the Frenchman's drop in efficiency as the match continued. In doing so, he secured a place in the second round, the round of 16, where according to the draw he will face the second seed and defending champion Taylor Fritz.
The tournament's official announcement described the encounter as a dramatic three-set challenge for the young Spanish player, especially noting that Herbert, a qualifier and an experienced specialist in faster conditions, started the match with better play and took the first set 7:5. The BOSS Open organiser stated that Landaluce managed to get back into the match and complete the victory 5:7, 6:3, 6:4, which matches the ATP's official presentation of the result. Such an outcome is also important for the continuation of the tournament: Landaluce not only passed the first round but immediately earned the opportunity to test himself against one of the strongest players in the draw. Fritz, as one of the four highest-seeded players, received a bye in the first round, so he enters the match with Landaluce without having played a previous match in Stuttgart this year.
Herbert started better, Landaluce found the answer
The first set went to Herbert, who arrived in Stuttgart through qualifying and therefore already had a competitive rhythm on grass. The Frenchman has for years been known for a game that translates well to faster surfaces: he relies on his serve, early movement into the court, shortening points and variety that is particularly valuable on grass. According to the organiser's report, it was Herbert who caused Landaluce serious problems in the first part of the match, and he closed the opening set 7:5. For the young Spaniard, that meant he had to recover from a score deficit in his Stuttgart debut while at the same time finding a way to neutralise an opponent who feels natural on courts of this kind. In that context, the victory is more important than merely passing the first-round test, because it shows an ability to adapt after an uncomfortable start.
In the second set, Landaluce managed to change the dynamic of the match. Instead of relying too heavily on short points, he began to enter more stable rallies more often and apply pressure to Herbert's second serve. He won the second set 6:3, bringing the match back into balance and forcing the Frenchman into a third section. In the deciding set, the younger player's greater firmness in key moments proved decisive, and the official score of 6:4 shows that Landaluce completed the comeback without a tie-break. The ATP match record also states that the match lasted 2:18:57, further confirming that this was not a short and routine passage, but a duel in which he had to withstand changes of rhythm physically and mentally.
Stuttgart's grass-court test at the start of the summer part of the season
The BOSS Open in Stuttgart is one of the first ATP tournaments after the end of the clay-court season and therefore has a special role in the tennis calendar every year. The ATP Tour states that the 2026 tournament is being held from 8 to 14 June at Tennisclub Weissenhof, on grass and in the ATP 250 category. For many players, it is the first serious competitive test on grass before the bigger tournaments that follow during June and at the beginning of July. Grass requires a different return position, faster decisions in rallies and greater precision on serve, so results in the first week often depend on who adapts more quickly to the new conditions. Landaluce's victory therefore gains additional value, because it was achieved against a player whose style naturally suits that surface.
According to the ATP's preview material, this year's edition of the BOSS Open is led by Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Bublik, Jiri Lehečka, Frances Tiafoe and other players from the upper part of the ATP rankings, while Alexander Zverev was among the announced home favourites. The ATP also announced that the tournament's total prize money is 768,220 euros, while the singles champion earns 250 points and 116,855 euros. A player who loses in the first round remains without ATP points, while advancing to the round of 16 brings 25 points and 13,480 euros. For Landaluce, this is a concrete sporting and ranking gain, but also an opportunity for a further step forward if he manages to extend the run against Fritz. In a 250-category tournament, every victory can have a major impact on the positioning of players trying to consolidate their status in the main ATP company.
A meeting with Taylor Fritz follows
The biggest reward for Landaluce's first-round comeback is a match against Taylor Fritz. According to the official ATP Tour draw, Fritz is the second seed and enters the second round directly after a first-round bye. The tournament organiser announced that the Landaluce and Fritz match is scheduled for Wednesday, 10 June 2026, leaving the young Spaniard a short window for recovery and preparation. Fritz comes to Stuttgart as the defending champion, after, according to the ATP, defeating Alexander Zverev 6:3, 7:6(0) in the 2025 final. The American player therefore has a clear reference point at this tournament: he has already proved that his serving game and baseline pressure can be extremely effective on the Weissenhof grass.
For Landaluce, that match will be a completely different test from the match against Herbert. Herbert is dangerous because of his experience, variety and ability to disrupt rhythm, while Fritz brings a stronger and more direct model of tennis with a lot of pressure already after the first shot. The Spaniard will have to start the match better than he did in the first round, because against a seed of that profile an early score gap can be much harder to recover from. Still, the victory over Herbert can give him an important competitive foothold, especially because he has already passed one demanding test and had the chance to feel the speed of the court. If he manages to maintain stability from the baseline and at the same time reduce the number of weaker service games, the duel with Fritz could become a relevant test of his current level on grass.
Herbert's experience underlines the value of the victory
Although he entered Stuttgart as a qualifier, Pierre-Hugues Herbert was not an ordinary first-round opponent. The BOSS Open organiser recalled that Herbert is a five-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, which says enough about his quality at the net, his feel for fast conditions and his experience in high-intensity matches. His singles ranking before the match was far lower than Landaluce's, but on grass such information does not always reflect the real danger a player represents. Herbert had already played competitive matches in Stuttgart through qualifying, and according to the tournament results he defeated Mert Alkaya in the final qualifying round. Entering the main draw and taking the first set against Landaluce confirm that the Frenchman had enough rhythm to seriously threaten the favourite by ranking.
For Landaluce, that is precisely why it was important that he did not lose patience after the first set. In grass-court matches, comebacks are often built on a small number of opportunities, because service games can pass very quickly and one weaker game can change an entire section. After 5:7, the Spaniard managed to increase pressure on return, win the second set 6:3 and maintain better concentration in the third until the end. Such a scenario is especially valuable for a player who is still in the phase of building result continuity on the ATP Tour. The victory in Stuttgart is not the biggest of his career, but it is a useful confirmation that on grass, too, he can compete with players who have more experience in fast and shortened points.
The first day also brought a seeded player's exit
Landaluce's progress was not the only important news of the first day of the main tournament. According to the official BOSS Open announcement, seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was eliminated already in the first round after a defeat to Mattia Bellucci. The Italian won 6:2, 6:7(5), 6:1, and the organiser stated that Davidovich Fokina, after a poor start, managed to take the second set in a tie-break but did not maintain his rhythm in the deciding part of the match. That result further confirms that the opening days on grass can be uncomfortable even for players with better rankings, especially if the opponent adapts more quickly to the lower bounce and shorter rallies. In the same report, the tournament also stated that the match between Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Roman Safiullin was not completed because of rain, with Safiullin leading 5:7, 7:6(4), 4:1.
This sequence of events gives broader context to Landaluce's success. On a day when seeded players and favourites had to find their rhythm immediately, the young Spaniard survived a difficult start to the match and remained in the lower part of the draw, where the highest possible test in that section now awaits him. According to the ATP draw, the winner of the Landaluce - Fritz match continues toward the quarter-finals in a part of the tournament where the outcome is only beginning to take shape. Considering that Stuttgart is a compact tournament with 28 players in the singles draw, every first-round result quickly changes the picture of possible pairings. Landaluce has completed his first task, and the next match will show whether he can turn the comeback against Herbert into a bigger result at one of the opening grass-court tournaments of the season.
