Eintracht Frankfurt - FC Augsburg: guide to the second Bundesliga matchday in Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Augsburg meet at Deutsche Bank Park in the second round of the 2026/27 Bundesliga, in a match that represents the home side's first league appearance in front of their own supporters in the new season. The current schedules of Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Augsburg and Deutsche Bank Park state that the match is scheduled for Sunday, September 6 at 17:30 local time in Frankfurt. An earlier schedule listed the weekend of September 4 to 6, but the exact date and time have now been confirmed for Sunday.
The match comes only one week after the start of the new Bundesliga season. Eintracht first travel to 1. FC Union Berlin, while Augsburg play at home against FC Schalke 04. Therefore, as of August 23, it is still not possible to speak of an actual league table for the 2026/27 season: all 18 clubs currently have zero league matches played. The first round will provide a much clearer picture immediately before the match in Frankfurt.
The starting point is therefore last season. Eintracht Frankfurt finished the 2025/26 Bundesliga in eighth place with 44 points, while FC Augsburg were ninth with 43. The difference of just one point shows how close the teams were over 34 rounds. Frankfurt scored 61 goals and conceded 65, while Augsburg finished with a 45:61 record.
This gives this early-season match clear significance. Eintracht want to immediately establish a different direction under their new coach, while Augsburg are trying to confirm that last season's ninth place was not the team's ceiling. Tickets for this match are in demand among supporters, especially because it is Eintracht's first home league appearance of the season.
Adi Hütter is once again in charge of Eintracht
One of the biggest changes in Frankfurt took place on the bench. Adi Hütter returned to the club and has once again been in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt since the beginning of July. The Austrian coach already worked in Frankfurt from 2018 to 2021, and he has now begun a new spell with a team that underwent a series of personnel changes during the summer.
His first competitive match of the new season produced a result that is difficult to overlook. On August 21, Eintracht defeated SC St. Tönis 11:0 in the first round of the German cup. Jonathan Burkardt scored three goals, Can Uzun two, while Robin Koch, Ayoube Amaimouni, Elias Baum, Younes Ebnoutalib, Mario Götze and Farès Chaïbi were also among the scorers.
The result was particularly interesting because of what had preceded it. Just six days earlier, Frankfurt lost 7:0 away to Brentford FC in their final pre-season match. Before that defeat, the pre-season results had looked very good: wins of 7:1 against FC Gießen, 3:0 against Trabzonspor, 1:0 away to Waldhof Mannheim, 2:0 against Hull City and 5:1 against FSV Frankfurt.
- FC Gießen - Eintracht Frankfurt 1:7
- Eintracht Frankfurt - Trabzonspor 3:0
- Waldhof Mannheim - Eintracht Frankfurt 0:1
- Eintracht Frankfurt - Hull City 2:0
- FSV Frankfurt - Eintracht Frankfurt 1:5
- Brentford FC - Eintracht Frankfurt 7:0
The 11:0 victory against St. Tönis was therefore important as a response to the heavy defeat in London, but the level of the opposition requires caution when drawing conclusions. The real tests begin in the Bundesliga.
Burkardt and Uzun immediately in the spotlight
Jonathan Burkardt opened the competitive season with a hat-trick. Can Uzun was involved in five goals in the same match through a combination of goals and assists, meaning Frankfurt already have two attacking players in good form before the start of the Bundesliga.
Against St. Tönis, Hütter started with Kauã Santos in goal, Robin Koch and Otávio in central defence, and Elias Baum and Keito Kosugi in the full-back positions. Raphael Onyedika and Mario Götze played centrally, Ayoube Amaimouni and Can Uzun were positioned more offensively, while Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib formed the attacking pair.
That selection provides a good indication of Hütter's approach. Frankfurt can attack with two players high up the pitch, while Uzun and the other attacking midfielders move into the space between the opposition midfield and defensive lines. Against Augsburg, it will be particularly interesting to see how high the home side can push their wide players without opening space for the visitors' counter-attacks.
Ritsu Doan and Hugo Larsson missed the cup match because of muscular problems. That was their status on August 21, not a prediction for September 6. There is enough time before the match for the situation to change, so the final list of absentees should only be assessed immediately before the game.
Augsburg progressed in the cup with a scoreline that looks easier than the match itself
FC Augsburg enter the new season with Manuel Baum on the bench. The club finished last season's Bundesliga in ninth place, immediately behind Eintracht, while their results fluctuated during pre-season.
Augsburg defeated Schwaben-Auswahl 5:0, drew 1:1 with 1. FC Saarbrücken, lost 5:2 to AFC Bournemouth, beat SC Schwaz 15:0 and US Sassuolo 3:2, while their final test against Leeds United ended in a 4:0 defeat.
Their first competitive away match was considerably more difficult than the final 2:0 scoreline suggests. Energie Cottbus kept Augsburg under pressure for long periods in the cup on August 22. After a goalless first half, Anton Kade scored early in the second half, and Kristijan Jakić sealed the match in stoppage time.
Baum started with Finn Dahmen in goal, with Noahkai Banks, Chrislain Matsima and Keven Schlotterbeck in front of him. Marius Wolf and Robin Fellhauer provided width, Fabian Rieder, Han-Noah Massengo and Hennes Behrens occupied the central areas, while Anton Kade and Michael Gregoritsch were among the most advanced players.
This creates an interesting tactical battle. If Augsburg again use three players in the last line and very active players close to the touchlines, Frankfurt will have to decide whether to press them high or protect the space behind their own wide players. On the other hand, Augsburg can hardly afford prolonged periods in Frankfurt like the first half in Cottbus, when their opponent created quality situations and Dahmen had to intervene.
Augsburg players worth watching
Anton Kade enters the season with several concrete attacking moments behind him. He scored in the 3:2 victory over Sassuolo and then netted the opening goal in the cup win away to Energie Cottbus. Kristijan Jakić, a former Eintracht Frankfurt player, also opened his competitive season with a goal in Cottbus.
Michael Gregoritsch represents a familiar option at the top of the attack, while Alexis Claude-Maurice and Mert Kömür give Baum's team additional possibilities between the lines. The current squad also includes Fabian Rieder, Robin Fellhauer, Han-Noah Massengo, Marius Wolf, Chrislain Matsima and goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.
Augsburg have enough different player profiles to change the way they attack during the match. Their reaction after the opening round against Schalke will show which line-up Baum is prepared to use for the demanding away match in Frankfurt.
Head-to-head meetings suggest a tougher match than the home side's reputation might imply
Eintracht have not lost any of their last five Bundesliga meetings with Augsburg. However, only two of those matches ended in Frankfurt victories, while three were draws. Particularly notable is the fact that the teams scored only five goals combined in their last four meetings.
- 25.04.2026: FC Augsburg - Eintracht Frankfurt 1:1
- 13.12.2025: Eintracht Frankfurt - FC Augsburg 1:0
- 20.04.2025: FC Augsburg - Eintracht Frankfurt 0:0
- 07.12.2024: Eintracht Frankfurt - FC Augsburg 2:2
- 19.04.2024: Eintracht Frankfurt - FC Augsburg 3:1
The most recent meeting was played in April in Augsburg. Anton Kade gave the home side the lead, while Ritsu Doan equalised in the second half. Several months earlier, in December 2025, Frankfurt won 1:0 at home thanks precisely to a goal from Doan.
That run suggests that home advantage gives Frankfurt an edge, but not a guarantee of a straightforward match. Augsburg have managed in several recent meetings to slow the tempo and limit the number of clear chances. The first goal will therefore be especially important for Eintracht: an early lead for the home side would force Augsburg into a more open approach and create more space for Burkardt, Uzun and the other attacking players.
Deutsche Bank Park enters the season with a record capacity
The match against Augsburg will be Eintracht's first home Bundesliga appearance following the latest increase in the capacity of Deutsche Bank Park. Since August 2026, the stadium has been able to accommodate 60,100 spectators, including 20,000 standing places. This is a further increase after the capacity had previously risen gradually from 51,500 to 59,500.
The match against Augsburg will therefore be the first opportunity in the new league season for Frankfurt to fill the expanded stadium. The large standing section and compact design of the stands allow the noise of the supporters to be transmitted very clearly onto the pitch, especially when the home side impose pressure early.
Deutsche Bank Park is located at Mörfelder Landstraße 362, 60528 Frankfurt am Main, south of the narrower city centre. The stadium is well connected to the main railway station and is located in the Frankfurter Stadtwald area.
Ticket sales for this match are ongoing. Visitors planning a trip should take into account heavy traffic around the stadium and arrive well before kick-off.
How to get to the stadium
For most visitors, public transport is more practical than travelling by car. The stadium has a railway station as well as tram and bus connections, while parking spaces in the immediate vicinity are limited.
- S-Bahn lines S7, S8 and S9 run from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof towards the "Stadion" station. The journey takes approximately 6 minutes, followed by a walk of around 10 to 15 minutes.
- Tram line 21 runs towards the stadium, while additional services on line 20 are also used on major event days. From the tram stop to the entrance, allow approximately 10 to 15 minutes on foot.
- Bus connections 61 and 80 use the "Stadionbad" and "Osttribüne" stops, from which the stadium is approximately a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
- Parking areas in the immediate stadium area have limited capacity, and advance reservation of parking access is required for several zones. Visitors are advised to use public transport.
- Tickets for events at Deutsche Bank Park generally include an RMV KombiTicket for local public transport, but the conditions for the specific purchased ticket should be checked before travelling.
Parking arrangements are also important for visiting supporters. Away-supporter buses are generally directed towards P9, while the Gleisdreieck area is intended for home supporters. Frankfurt also has a low-emission zone, so drivers entering the covered area should check the rules relating to the green environmental sticker.
When do the entrances open
For the Eintracht Frankfurt - FC Augsburg match, entry is currently listed as beginning at 15:30, two hours before the 17:30 kick-off. This leaves enough time for security checks and reaching the relevant section without rushing.
Given the capacity of 60,100 and the fact that this is Frankfurt's first home league match of the season, arriving in the final few dozen minutes before kick-off carries a greater risk of waiting at approaches and security checks. It is worth securing tickets in good time and planning to arrive earlier, especially for visitors unfamiliar with Frankfurt.
What to expect on the pitch
The biggest question for Eintracht is how much the 11:0 victory has truly eliminated the problems exposed by the 7:0 defeat in Brentford. Hütter's team have enough attacking quality to create a large number of chances, but against stronger pressing it remains important to see how they build out with the ball and protect space after losing possession.
For Augsburg, the situation is almost the opposite. The 2:0 result in Cottbus secured progression, but the performance showed that Baum's team can have problems when the opposition play bravely and attack space quickly after winning the ball. In Frankfurt, the pressure will be even more pronounced.
Three matchups could have a particularly significant influence on the match:
- Jonathan Burkardt against Augsburg's central defenders, especially with his movement between the centre-backs.
- Can Uzun between the midfield and defensive lines, where Augsburg must prevent him from receiving the ball facing goal.
- The wide areas, where Marius Wolf and Augsburg's other wide-positioned players will try to exploit the space Frankfurt leave when attacking with a large number of players.
An additional dimension comes from the fact that both teams will play the first Bundesliga round before this match. Eintracht's match away to Union Berlin and Augsburg's home meeting with Schalke could change the starting line-ups, the status of injured players and the tactical priorities.
For that reason, August 23 is too early to predict the line-ups for September 6 precisely. What is already clear is that Frankfurt enter the season with Hütter, highly attacking options and a new record capacity at their home stadium, while Augsburg arrive as a team that finished last season only one point behind the home side and have lost only once in the last four head-to-head meetings.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly when Deutsche Bank Park hosts the first home league match of the season, and the most important points for supporters travelling to Frankfurt are to keep in mind the 17:30 kick-off, the 15:30 opening of the entrances and the very heavy traffic around the stadium.
