Lech Poznań - Bayer 04 Leverkusen: a new European test on Bułgarska Street
Lech Poznań and Bayer 04 Leverkusen meet on Thursday, 15 October 2026, at 18:45 local time, at Enea Stadion in Poznań. The second matchday of the 2026/2027 Europa League league phase follows two very different starts to their European campaigns. Lech lost 4-0 away to Crystal Palace, while Bayer defeated NK Celje 2-0 at home. The hosts are therefore looking for their first points, while the visitors want to build on their successful start.
Both teams won their domestic league matches on 10 October: Lech beat Śląsk Wrocław 4-1, while Bayer defeated Mainz 4-3. Their attacking performances are promising, but both defences leave opportunities for opponents. It is worth securing tickets in advance, especially when planning a trip to Poznań.
Why the points in Poznań matter
In the Europa League league phase, 36 clubs compete in a single league table. After eight matches, the top eight advance directly to the round of 16, clubs finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, and the remaining teams are eliminated. Bayer have three points and a goal difference of +2, while Lech have no points and a goal difference of -4. For the home side, therefore, both the number of goals scored and the number conceded matter.
Lech host Sunderland on 22 October, while Bayer travel to OFI Crete. The second matchday will not determine qualification, but two consecutive victories or defeats can significantly change the standings. Lech also want to avoid going into their next home match without any points.
Lech Poznań: responding after the defeat in London
Niels Frederiksen's team followed defeats against Górnik Zabrze and Crystal Palace with victories over Radomiak Radom, 5-1, and Śląsk Wrocław, 4-1. Nine goals in two domestic league wins indicate a recovery in attacking form, but mistakes when playing out from the back and defending set pieces proved costly for Lech in London.
Lech's most recent competitive matches:
- 6 September - Lech Poznań 1:0 Raków Częstochowa, domestic league.
- 12 September - Górnik Zabrze 2:1 Lech Poznań, domestic league.
- 17 September - Crystal Palace 4:0 Lech Poznań, Europa League.
- 20 September - Lech Poznań 5:1 Radomiak Radom, domestic league.
- 10 October - Śląsk Wrocław 1:4 Lech Poznań, domestic league.
In Wrocław, Patrik Wålemark came on in the second half and scored twice, despite having been ill in the preceding days. Filip Jagiełło and Pablo Rodríguez added one goal each, while Rodríguez also scored twice against Radomiak. Wålemark's runs create space for striker Mikael Ishak as well.
Ishak had chances against Crystal Palace but failed to convert them. This time, his ability to hold up the ball will be as important as his finishing. Lech want to attack through Rodríguez and Jagiełło, but without leaving their centre-backs exposed to Bayer's rapid counterattacks. The question is whether they can reproduce their domestic league efficiency on the European stage.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Schick scores, García sets the tempo
Bayer defeated NK Celje 2-0. The opening goal came from a Svit Seslar own goal following a delivery by Aleix García, while Facundo Medina scored the second with a volley after a García corner. Carles Martínez's team controlled possession and kept a clean sheet. Lech also conceded a goal following a corner in London.
In the Bundesliga, Bayer followed a 3-2 defeat to SV Elversberg with a 4-0 victory over Union Berlin, a 2-2 draw with Augsburg and a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig. On 10 October, they won 4-3 in Mainz thanks to goals from Robert Andrich, Patrik Schick, Jarell Quansah and Moussa Diaby. Their lead was reduced twice, showing Lech that Bayer can both create chances and allow opponents to create them.
With his goal against Mainz, Schick scored in each of the first five Bundesliga rounds, equalling the club record for such a start. García directs play and takes set pieces, Diaby poses a threat on counterattacks, while Afonso Moreira and Ibrahim Maza can accelerate attacking moves. In Mainz, Quansah, Edmond Tapsoba, Medina and Miguel Gutiérrez played in front of goalkeeper Mark Flekken, but the lineup for Poznań has not yet been confirmed.
Suspensions, injuries and possible rotation
Lech will be without Radosław Murawski, who was sent off after receiving a second yellow card against Crystal Palace. His suspension applies to the next European match. João Moutinho is also unavailable: on 6 October, Lech announced that he would undergo foot surgery and face several months of recovery. Ali Gholizadeh is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that the club confirmed back in May. Antoni Kozubal and Gustav Berggren have recovered, but their availability must be confirmed before the match.
On 8 October, Bayer confirmed that Christian Kofane would be sidelined for several weeks with a left thigh injury. Martínez made six changes against Celje compared with the previous league lineup. Rotation is therefore also possible in Poznań, especially as there are only five days between the matches against Mainz and Lech.
Where the match could be decided
Lech can cause problems if they escape pressure quickly enough and find their wingers. Wålemark's runs, Rodríguez's late arrivals and Ishak's movement can open a route into Bayer's penalty area. However, when Lech's wide players push forward, space opens up behind them. This is precisely where Diaby and Moreira can punish a loss of possession. Maintaining a good defensive shape after attacking is therefore more important than pressing constantly without sufficient cover.
The second key factor is set pieces. Bayer scored from a corner against Celje, while Lech conceded in that manner in London. Good positioning when defending free kicks and corners will reduce the home side's vulnerability. On the other hand, Bayer conceded three goals against Mainz, so Lech have reason to attack even when they cannot rely on long periods of possession. The advantage will belong to the team that controls the space around second balls more effectively, not necessarily the one that keeps the ball for longer.
Head-to-head meetings and European experience
Available records do not confirm any previous competitive meetings between Lech and Bayer. Current form therefore provides a more useful comparison. Lech comfortably overcame FC Thun in Europa League qualifying: after winning 7-0 at home, they drew 2-2 in Switzerland. Bayer have already demonstrated in the league phase that they can control a match against Celje, but Poznań represents their first European away fixture of the season.
Three days later, Lech host Korona Kielce, while Bayer face Freiburg. The congested schedule could influence the selection of the starting lineups. For Lech, this is their first home match of the league phase, following their opening fixture in London.
Enea Stadion: large stands and distinctive support
Enea Stadion is located at Bułgarska 17 in the western part of Poznań. The stadium has 42,837 seats in covered stands. It was renovated by 2010 and hosted matches during the 2012 European Championship. Given its size, it is worth checking the designated section and entrance in advance.
Lech supporters are known for jumping together with their backs turned to the pitch and their arms resting on the shoulders of neighbouring fans. This tradition became internationally famous following European matches against Manchester City in 2010 and spread under the name "The Poznań". Visiting supporters can expect a loud atmosphere, while neutral spectators will witness a distinctive tradition of the home stands. Tickets and transport should be planned together, well before matchday.
Getting to Poznań and practical information
Poznań is located in western Poland, on the railway route between Berlin and Warsaw. From Poznań Główny railway station, the journey can be continued by tram. For previous Lech matches, the city increased tram services and restricted car traffic; the measures for 15 October should be checked separately.
What to check before arriving:
- Address - Enea Stadion, ul. Bułgarska 17, 60-320 Poznań.
- Trams - additional departures on lines 1, 6, 13 and 15 were announced for previous matches; be sure to check the current timetable.
- Parking - the city previously recommended parking areas on Grunwaldzka, Kolorowa and Smoluchowskiego streets, while warning that the number of spaces was limited.
- Entry - check the section, permitted items and access arrangements. The exact opening time of the stadium gates for this match has not yet been confirmed in the available announcements.
- Return journey - expect congestion after the match and possible temporary traffic changes around Bułgarska and Grunwaldzka streets.
At previous matches, tickets allowed holders to travel on ZTM Poznań public transport without an additional charge during a specified period. It has not been confirmed whether this will also apply on 15 October. Travellers should allow for transfers and security checks.
For a short visit to the city, Stary Rynek, with its Renaissance town hall, and Ostrów Tumski, with its cathedral, are worth exploring. Above all, however, enough time should be allowed to reach the correct stadium section and to travel back after the match.
